When J-Pot first opened, it quickly became one of our favorite restaurants in San Antonio. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and genuinely felt like the staff wanted you there. Even on busy weekends, managers were constantly checking on guests, the self-serve bars were fully stocked, and the servers were knowledgeable about the menu and enthusiastic about the experience. It felt like they were trying to showcase Japanese barbecue and hot pot--not just serve a meal. Fast forward to today's visit... what happened? From the moment we walked in, the hostess acted like our arrival was an inconvenience, despite greeting customers being the job description. Our server was pleasant enough, but completely lacked enthusiasm for the product. At one point, when discussing an item, the response was essentially, "If you don't like it, you don't have to eat it." Fair enough--but that's light-years away from the hospitality we experienced just a few months ago. The self-serve stations have apparently changed, and several items now have to be ordered through the server. That's perfectly fine, but it would've been nice if someone had explained that at the beginning of the meal instead of us discovering it near the end. Then there were the bathrooms... I'm not a restaurant owner, but if you're open during Saturday lunch in the middle of a shopping center and business appears slower than it once was, you'd think keeping the restrooms clean would be a manageable priority. Soap dispensers were hanging off the wall, paper towels were stacked all over the bathroom, trash covered the floors, and--ironically--I found the napkins I couldn't get at my table... in the restroom. The employees clearing tables looked less like restaurant staff and more like high school students serving detention or trying to earn extra credit. The whole place feels like it lost its identity. What was once a polished, family-friendly restaurant with pride in the experience now gives off a "Come on, man... it's not that big of a deal if things are a little gross. We're trying our hardest." vibe. J-Pot used to have standards. Somewhere along the way, those standards seem to have been replaced by cost-cutting and indifference. The food is still good(ish, but that for a different time), but the experience that made this place special has largely disappeared--and that's the most disappointing part. Will JPot bounce back? Or will Jpot succumb to the lackadaisical labor mentality of the modern day employee (I blame communism) and commit seppuku??? The world awaits.... read more

First and foremost, I just want to admit that I am embarrassed that I even brought friends to this restaurant for the first time after the experience that we had tonight. I rarely give a one star let alone less than three star reviews to any restaurants unless it's an absolute catastrophe and low and behold, if I could give less than one star I would do so. I don't even know where to begin so I'll try to start from the beginning we get sat down. We get our drinks and normally they would turn on the grill to preheat it so that it's ready to cook the food that did not happen. We ordered our first round of meats to be cooked. It took roughly 10 minutes for those to come out and our server nonchalantly decided to just remark with oh they haven't brought your food yet. Let me go look into that. See what they're doing in the back. This was the start of excuse. After excuse from our server we will call him T the entire evening. After that, additional 10 minutes we had to ask for a girl to get turned on to which it never properly got heated so our food did not cook initially when we asked about the vegetables that come to the table with every single Korean barbecue or Japanese barbecue place you ever go to the response was not. I'm sorry I forgot it was. I don't know why they're changing the menu, but it's not on there anymore to which t proceeded to just hand us his iPad and let us select what we wanted instead of going over the options with us We then had to ask for scissors, which is also customary at this type of restaurant to cut your Cooks food. His response to that was oh let me go. Check with the dishwashers are done, washing them another excuse with no apology for his mistake once those came brought by another person, we were able to finally be in eating our food. We also had to ask for the spray oil to prevent the grills from sticking when we asked if the temperature on the grill could be turned up because it wasn't heating properly. He had no response for us. It took another lady to come up and offer us a different type of grill, which ultimately was a better choice because we were able to cook our When we asked about other options on the menu, he suggested a pork dish that he called, savory and sweet once the meat came, we noticed a very strong spicy smell to the meat and a deep red color which always indicates spice. He then proclaimed that he has never tried it here, and unless the chefs were doing something crazy in the back because they like to play with recipes, he wasn't sure if it was actually spicy or not not only is that just poor service but it's ultimately a dangerous proposition because if somebody happened to have a sensitivity to spicy food that could've been extremely bad outcome All of the food tonight was extremely bland. Everything tasted the same from the filet mignon to the scallops to the steaks and everything in between except for that spicy pork everything tasted exactly the same bland and quite frankly rather disgusting. When it came time for the Bill both parties notice that there was an up charge on drinks that we were not told about and additional beverages were ordered and charged before on our bill that we decided it was not even worth arguing about I personally have been to this restaurant three different times, and if you look at my previous reviews, I even gave them a five star rating that is not the case anymore. The quality has diminished. The food itself has gotten worse. The service was appalling and I will never come back to this restaurant again if you're looking for a good Japanese barbecue place look elsewhere than Jpot if anything they should change their name to F pot because that's the grade that they deserve a big fat F. Avoid it all cost do yourself a favor save yourself the money and go eat elsewhere. There are other restaurants like Chili's P Terry's and even Costco in the same parking lot that you'll get better food from if you need to feed your family. It's quite sad because this was a gym in the area and now it is a piece of crap spray painted gold Never again j pot never again The only the only positives would be the ambience as it is a fun environment. I absolutely love this place. We had a wonderful experience from start to finish. Our waiter Joey was very on top of everything. We always had drinks, appetizers and meats. I don't eat pork so they did miso broth with water for me to accommodate that, I appreciate that very much. The quality of meats seemed high and everything we got was delicious! Now if I knew what I was doing it probably would have tasted more to my liking. You pick all your soup preferences from the broth to the noodles. Then you pick what you want inside of it. Next you pick all the meats you'd like to cook some costing in additional fees. They were out of some of the choices. They have a side bar for all the veggies and sauces as well as a dessert bar. Great food, they were unfortunately out of the things we initially tried to order but otherwise had backup options. My husband got the bbq but wasn't a fan of the miso fish. I had the jpot with brisket and was thrilled. Kids under 7 eat free for a limited time so kiddo just kind of picked off us. Our server Nichole was very sweet and helpful with explaining everything. Great staff that is trying to make this a great place, but the food isn't that good, the veggie line is lacking, and it's dirty. If I was 19, I may take a girl here on a date. The middle of the table is an open-flame BBQ grill with steel mesh to keep food from falling through, yet some do make it through, so there is always an aroma of burning food in the air. The menus are hard to read, and there isn't much guidance on what best practices are. So, if you like cooking and know your direction, this may be your place. If the kitchen isn't your thing, it's like being a bachelor on a Thursday night, concocting a dish from leftover groceries. The price was reasonable, and because we didn't stay long, they charged only a portion of the fee without us asking. So, my recommendation: Go here if you have time to kill, like cooking, and are savvy about whipping up your dishes from available meat, spices, and raw veggies. I've been to JPot twice now, and overall, it's okay. The food is decent, but nothing that really stands out or gives me a reason to rave about it. On the positive side, the prices are better than KPot, so if you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, that's definitely a plus. My biggest issue--and the reason for my lower rating--is the gnat/fruit fly problem. During both visits, there were a noticeable number of gnats flying around our table and food at the buffet bar. I hoped it was just a one-time issue after my first visit, but seeing the same problem on my second trip was disappointing. This place was a fun experience. The price was approximately $34/person. We felt it was a little expensive but we are not big eaters. You have 90 minutes to eat, which is quite generous and the time starts when food comes. The waitresses/waiters work very hard and are constantly running. The salad bar was really good and well stocked with different items. They honored a card from a local weight loss doctor that requests they let the person order kids portion, which will be one of the reasons we will return because that was a savings due to the little amount eaten. This was especially disappointing given that multiple prior reviews mention frequent item shortages at this location. I chose to stay and give the restaurant a chance after expressing my dissatisfaction, but unfortunately the experience only declined from there. I left feeling lethargic (due to poor food quality- veggies with black spots, meat not marinated etc.), uncomfortable, and frustrated that I had paid such a high price for such poor quality and service. The guests I brought with me also commented that the meat we grilled lacked any seasoning or marinade and required additional salt to be palatable. Overall, the experience was embarrassing. I have visited several Jpot and kpot experiences, and this was by far the worst experience. Checked out this new hot pot/ bbq spot and was very impressed! Compared to the other local similar places the meat quality was much better! Hopefully, this stays the same. It was a rainy day so I went hard on the hot pot, while my husband was focused on the bbq. They have a pretty standard sauce and appetizer bar. Everything was pretty clean too. We went mid day so there wasn't as many servers so the service was a little slower, but not complainable. I order beef brisket, beef belly, and ribeye for my soup, which was amazing. I had to get multiple rounds. They do slack a bit on the vegetable portions. From the bbq, the garlic beef ribeye cubes were my favorite. My husband ordered more to grill me ample portions. While I enjoyed the hot pot, barbecue, and the mini "buffet" I'm giving it 4 stars. This might sound crazy but there was a lot of meat provided for the BBQ; it was almost too much. I wish there were bigger servings of meat for the hot pot and vegetables, mushrooms, and noodles for both. I was also disappointed in the short ribs because there wasn't much seasoning. I really wanted to love J Pot Hot Pot & BBQ, but based on my experience (and my cousin's as well), it fell short compared to other Korean BBQ and hot pot spots in San Antonio. The BBQ selection is limited, and the flavors weren't as bold or well-seasoned as what you'd expect from a Korean BBQ experience. While there is a decent variety of vegetables, some didn't seem as fresh when I visited, which was disappointing. The wait staff wasn't very attentive and didn't seem very knowledgeable, which affected the overall experience. My cousin had a similar visit and shared the same feedback--food lacking flavor and fewer choices compared to other places. That said, I'm still hopeful they improve and step up their game because competition in this space is strong, and I genuinely want to see them succeed. On a positive note, the location is very convenient--especially if you're on the far northwest side near Costco in the Dove Creek Shopping Center. We finally got around to trying it. It was mixed for us. It was actually going to be a three till the end of the meal when we got a pleasant surprise. Let's start of course with the negatives for us. It's an interesting concept that is not the norm in our country. At times having to cook your own proteins and veggies was a little frustrating. Yes we knew that coming in, but until you experience it, you never know. They could also have been a little more helpful with cooking tips and sauces. We pretty much were experimenting. The seafood is definitely not very good for the grilling like we ordered. Makes more sense for the hot pot. The calamari grilled was extremely chewy, and the shrimp were very easy to overcook. Also not as flavorful as the beef. It was also quite pricey. You figure doing the cooking would be make it a little more affordable. I get it, it's all you can eat, but only for an hour or so, and you would be surprised how much you get tired of grilling your own meat. You don't eat as much you would think. The chicken was also kind of mediocre. Not as flavorful and not as spicy as the waiter told us it would be. Ok let's start with the positives. Our waiter was very attentive with refills, and with clearing our table. Never had to flag him down. If you get the grill, stick to beef! We had the filet mignon(limited to one per diner), yakinuki ribeye, garlic miso skirt, kalbi short ribs, and the only pork we had the pork belly. The table favorite was the garlic miso skirt. So juicy, tasty and easiest of all to cook! All the beef was great. The reason it got bumped to a 4 was our waiter reminded us of the filet mignon. It was delicious and they bring it to you with compound butter on top. He didn't have to remind us, I know how expensive it is, and made the sting of the bill not so bad. They have sooo many sauces and they are all amazing! The chili sauce was by far the table favorite! They had tortillas, which we didn't get, but gave us a little chuckle. The most surprising was the wings(already cooked) were excellent! Go figure! They have a smaller than expected vegetable cart, but it was all fresh. There are not very many choices for sides, but they were good. They had ice cream cup singles and some bars and fruit for dessert. I think we will be back to try the hotpot. I think it lends itself more to a variety of the meats and a little safer flavor wise! read more

We went to Jpot and had an amazing experience. We were trying to eat Korean BBQ, but we did not want to drive 40 minutes, so we decided to give this place a try. From the moment you walk in the greeters are so friendly, the decor is cute with Japanese cherry blossoms, and there wasn't music blasting which was nice since we had our 14 month old with us. Gigi was our server and made us feel right at home. She brought our food out quickly, did grill changes before we asked, and was overall so attentive. The meat quality was amazing for the price. Way better than other places I have been to. They also have a ton of options. My only request is that they add ponzu sauce and huy fong chili garlic sauce. These are such a staple for me at Korean BBQ places. For the time being we will just bring our own next time. My family of 4 got ravenous after running some errands/shopping. We wanted something Teppanyaki-ish and landed on Japanese bbq. J pot is a Japanese bbq and hot pot place with options to do one or the other, or both for an additional $5. We opted for bbq. You pay a flat fee for all you can eat, based on your age. Kids 11 and older pay the adult fee of ~$35. If you're 7-10, it's like ~$16. If you're 4-6, ~$12. 3 and under are free. Not a bad price for adults if you eat all the protein lol. There's a "bar" where you can get a mix of hot and cold things. Hot items included chicken wings, fried rice, dumplings, veggie spring rolls and shrimp tempura. Cold was edamame (unsalted), cantaloupe, individual mousse-like dessert cups & an assortment of sauces. You can make your own sauce/dips. I like the J soy sauce myself. Our server was fairly attentive. She wasn't overbearing but checked in from time to time to ask us how things tasted. The meats came out at a decent pace. We tried seafood (garlic shrimp), poultry (spicy chicken), beef (bulgogi, bone-in short ribs, rib eye cubes), pork belly, broccoli, corn with cheese, green lettuce and potatoes. Everything tasted good. We didn't grill the lettuce, rather, we used them to make lettuce wraps with the bulgogi). I don't recommend the potatoes. They take too long to cook and never get really "done." Short ribs were my fav, bulgogi was husband and eldest's fav, and youngest loved the pork belly. Don't expect cocktails. You get a selection of sake, beer, soda, lemonades (which you can add flavored popping boba) or water. If you like sweet, I recommend the lychee sake. Parking is plenty. Interior is thoughtfully decorated - though some of the lights on our fake cherry blossom tree were dead lol. We did have to carefully dance around the oil laying on the floor, less we wanted to slip and fall. (Each table has a bottle of oil to grease their metal grates). read more
