They were able to take our ideas and present a number of potential models which hovered around our budget. They were so proactive in making sure the project was on schedule and on budget, making regular visits and being extremely accessible if we had any questions or concerns. They were easy to work with, from making sure our pool gained HOA approval, to presenting different add-ons, to working with our landscaper to make sure our backyard projects were symbiotic to one another, it was an immense pleasure which I wish upon any potential pool buyer. I looked at Dream Pools and a couple of other bigger pool companies in town. The prices were pretty comparable for what we were after (a relatively standard pool with a hot tub - nothing massively fancy), and Dream Pools was a hair more expensive - maybe $1,000 or so. However, the other company's main pitch was "we're the biggest pool company in town so that's why you should choose us - how do you know if the other guys will still be in business in 10 years?" First, Walmart is the biggest retailer, but that doesn't mean that it's the best. Second, Toys R Us could have said the same thing 10 years ago, and look where they are now. Third, I don't recall that the other guys offered a 10 year warranty anyway, so what does it matter. Dream Pools, on the other hand gave me a feeling that they'd offer a more personal service, which when you are spending a lot of money on a major project offers quite a bit of peace of mind. In addition, they committed to it being finished in six weeks, which when you have three kids on summer vacation and you don't start until early June, is a big benefit. Throughout the process, Carlos and Sylvia (the company owners) came out 2-3 times each week to check in on things. He offered helpful suggestions, and also worked with us on things that we wanted. His crew was polite, efficient and tidy. Because we wanted to do a few other things as well (new fence, paving around the pool, new sod), I simply went through Carlos to get these done. Any savings that I could have made by finding my own contractors (and these guys were still surprisingly affordable) was offset by not having to deal with them individually to schedule things - Carlos did all that for us. The work was of the highest craftsmanship and quality. The team broke ground on June 7 and I was in the pool on July 17. The pool and the entire garden looks beyond what I could have hoped for. I first met Carlos and his wife Sylvia back in August of 2017 and they both appeared to be nice and polite people. I decided on Dream Pools for several reasons. First, they were the cheapest option. Second, Carlos agreed to my finance terms when no other pool company would. He appeared to be very sincere during the negotiation process and I appreciated that. We signed a very loosely formed contract and got straight to work. Carlos and Jose came out and drew the outline for the pool, and the next day another gentleman began the excavation process. This the beginning of my problems. I started to notice the pool was taking a shape different from the agreed upon design. When I discussed it with Carlos he said the form was correct and what I asked for. I keep meticulous records . The issue was with the raised bond beam on the backside of the pool. The design included a gradual curve but instead I ended up with a straight line. Carlos said "it looked good" but I wasn't going for it. Finally, I asked him what it would take for me to get the additional 2' across an 8' length and he said it would cost me an additional $5k due to material and labor cost. Mind you, Carlos had not overseen the excavation process as he probably should have. There were still several feet to go to complete the dig so this change wouldn't have been monumental and it sure didn't carry the $5k price tag. It was a scare tactic. I felt stuck. Stuck in something I wasn't going to like. I was being nickled and dimed. Carlos came in low on his bid just to make up the difference during the project. This is common practice in the pool industry and Dream Pools did not appear to be different. I was going to end up with Carlos's version of "my pool" that I was paying for. I told him I wasn't happy with what was happening and we lost communication for a couple of weeks. I had a huge hole in my back yard, small children in the house - I had enough. I told him I wanted out of my contract. Carlos did not originally give me my plans and permits - which should remain at the job site at all times (please be aware of this) so I ended up cancelling my deposit until I received them. He also ended up suing me a ridiculous amount for work already completed. We ended up on a settlement. It took a few more weeks for the despair from looking at the hole in my backyard to dissipate. I was already several thousand dollars in the hole - literally. First thing I did was go to county and convert my plans/permits from contractor to owner-builder. It took me three months to complete my pool using the same subcontractors used by the major pool companies in San Diego. Carlos quoted me $68k on a pool I wasn't going to be happy with. I ended up building a contractor quoted $120k pool on a $40k budget. I built the pool that I wanted. Pool companies warranty the pool frame, but good luck finding your pool contractor 20 years from now. The pool industry is a shady one - beware. All of these pools are built to the same standard because the inspection process demands it down to the re-bar. read more
