The whole team at SD Pools is amazing! Enrique, Chad, and Josh have been SO great to work with. We did a big backyard remodel and were initially trying to decide if we wanted to go with a landscaping company that would subcontract the pool just to keep it under one roof. I am so incredibly glad we didn't do that and chose to go with SD Pools instead. We initially met with Josh, who walked us through everything (timeline, cost, the process, etc). Once the build started, we worked with our project manager, Enrique, who went above and beyond to make sure things happened in a timely fashion and that we would be happy with the final project. We decided to try and build our dream cocktail pool last year. Got in touch with 6-7 companies in SD. We found that most companies wanted to build something larger than our budget, or not in our style, and the sales people were hit or miss. Not an ideal situation for a large financial commitment like a pool. But then Ken from SD pools came to visit. Ken was awesome, very matter of fact, and he kept their pricing simple and transparent. I think pictures speak louder than words as always. I'm very pleased I used San Diego Pools to do this job. Now my backyard has become the popular summer spots for my friends to get together. I started the project during Covid so there were a few delays here and there, which were expected. Josh, the owner, and his team members kept me in the loop. We had to get over a few hurdles along the way, but the final product speaks for itself. My friends are quite impressed with the design and details of my pool. Also, I love the fact that SD Pools didn't require any payment when the job first stated. I made payments on 3 different stages of the proejct. Updated: Changed rating due to falsehoods in business' reply. I stated facts and was fair; Katie's statement directly contradicts detailed daily logs kept on site. SD Pools built a beautiful pool for us. Unfortunately there were major issues that are detailed here: (1) we had to do thousands of dollars of additional work to be able to use the heater, as SDGE did not approve the installation and required major modifications. SD pools took no responsibility, in spite of the fact that their plumber's work was deemed to be insufficient for installing the required larger gas meter. Well into the project, Josh casually mentioned that we'd need to upgrade the meter and that SDGE would do this at no charge. This was not the case and SD Pools left the project with equipment that could not be used without spending thousands of dollars. Josh's reply to this issue was that SDGE is pickier on some jobs than others. We met on-site (twice, once with a plumber we paid to redo piping installed by SD Pools earlier the same year) with a gentleman that introduced himself as "head of the SDGE gas team", and he specifically said the piping installed by SD Pools did not meet SDGE requirements for the meter size needed to accommodate the pool heater. (2) we needed to over-excavate due to soft soils, which we completely understood would be an additional cost (I'm a retired engineer and have significant construction experience). The sub doing this work told me he was not being paid for a large portion of this work since he had continued digging without authorization. SD Pools billed us for the work they did not pay the sub to do. When I mentioned that I knew the sub was not being paid, this extra charge was removed. If the sub had not come to talk to me, we would have been billed thousands of dollars in cost that SD Pools did not incur. This is not an honest way to do business. (3) Our permit process was lengthy and poorly handled by a third party working as a sub to SD Pools. In order to obtain the permit and begin work, the equipment was shown in a location we had never discussed and which would have been horrible (due to an abandoned easement issue that I resolved in one day by calling the City once I was made aware of it after a months-long delay). Our superintendent, Corey, repeatedly told us not to worry about it and construction proceeded with the equipment installed at our preferred location, not matching the permit. He said that the inspector probably wouldn't care. Since it was important to us that the final installation match the permit, we took it upon ourselves to coordinate permit revisions with the City. (4) communication throughout the project was frustrating. I'd ask for updates, get little information, then workers would show up without notice. Katie sends very friendly email replies that are not really responsive to the issues. I felt bad for her, having to field the multitude of concerns with cheerful responses. (5) we were told early on that we'd be given advance notification when payments were due. We ALWAYS paid promptly. One of the last phases of the project, the shotcrete, was actually cancelled - after being scheduled - by SD Pools because they were waiting for a payment we had not been given any advance notice about. At this point in the job, EVERY payment had been made on time and we had acted in good faith. In return, we experienced numerous delays and very poor communication. Cancelling the shotcrete sub felt punitive and unprofessional, being treated as if we were delinquent in paying and had not been honorable at every turn for several months. In summary, the salesperson (Kenny) was professional and the final product is very nice. It took 14 months from the time we signed the contract until we were able to use the pool heater. Our site supervisor was neither professional nor honest, and the company does not take responsibility for delivering a properly working product; we paid for a pool heater, only to learn upon project completion that it could not be used without incurring significant additional cost. Based on our experience, we would recommend looking elsewhere and carefully checking references. read more

Surprise. Pool was done a month ahead of schedule and the family was swimming on June 1st. UPDATE: Hi Katie, I waited two+ years to post this review to give your company a fair shot. I originally wrote it during the construction process and then saved it as a draft. This project was supposed to be finished in December. It was not. It finally finished in April. Since the pool was completed- with all of the issues in the review... we have reached out multiple times in 2019 and 2020 to get that "final walkthrough and training" for the systems. Crickets. No response. Most recently we contacted Corey in Service directly and whoever has his phone - in response to a very specific question - replied "he is no longer with the company." No offer of help. Not phone call to check-in. Nothing. The grout is cracking and chipping. The spa jets do not all flow at the same rate. The Pentair system is a nightmare. We watch YouTube videos online to try and troubleshoot (videos created by pool companies that are offering help) and it rarely connects when we are away from home. The OPR levels are always reading as not right - and we have a pool guy that comes to the house and tries to help keep our pool clear. Your company cashed our checks and the poor customer experience that went south almost immediately after contracts were signed continues. If this is incorrect, and you have concern for a customer, I expect to hear from someone OTHER than the project manager who was so awful for the construction job, that can actually help us and fix the coping and grout cracks. Someone that can give us the training that we should have received at the end of the project. read more

We hired San Diego Pools for a new residential pool project in our Carlsbad backyard, and we can only say that our experience with this project has deteriorated to the point that it is no longer acceptable. I rarely write a review, but the experience has been so draining and time consuming that I had to share. I have worked with contractors in the past and in backyard and house remodels, so I understand that delays are common and oversight is required by the owner. However, the number of issues, the lack of responsiveness, and the excessive delay (we are on month eleven of a project that per contract is listed as 90 - 120 days). The eleven months doesn't include the time we waited for the City permit and HOA approval - the process took an additional four to five months (which I totally understand is out of their control). We were able to start using the pool at month eight, but we are still waiting for some pending issues to be finalized. We have pending emails that have not been addressed. Issues continue to arise even after we are told the pool can be used including, gas line not being connected, salt filter pump not being connected, most recently we realized that the pool vacuum pump may not be working. The Good: Our sales pitch was excellent: comfortable, informative, and our sales person was competent and friendly. Our project manager was friendly. We were sold! The Bad: Almost everything else has been extremely disappointing. Ongoing poor communication between the project manager and crews leading to inaccurate information relayed and the owner having to project manage the start of almost every phase. Some of the mistakes, if not corrected, would have been very expensive (time and money) to correct No oversight from project manager at the beginning or end of each phase Installation of incorrect material Broken gas pipe that was neglected and required ongoing follow up and owner intervention (has been since repaired) Lengthy delays between the various phases - as I said we are on our 11th month of a project, that according to the contract should have taken 3 - 4 months Subcontracting the work to crews leading to subpar work - coping left with sharp edges, deep overhang in the interior of hot tub area, a thin film of mortar left on flagstone that made flagstone look grayish and dull and stained ledger stone, gas line not connected, salt filter pump not connected, etc Project manager failing to show up as agreed upon and failure to take notes when reviewing job with owners resulting in inaccurate information being relayed to work crews On going promises that things would be take care of, but little to no follow through Face to face interactions are pleasant, but in between we feel like a forgotten number and an afterthought.
