I know because while he was on the phone during a business call I sneakily cut both mine and his brat in half and swapped halves and then proceeded to scarf both halves before he got off the phone. My friend was having a little birthday get together here one night for his big 3-0 bday. I'm not a big beer drinker so I had never even thought about coming here in the first place. With that said, it was nice to go "out of my comfort zone". They're located in a cute area and fairly easily accessible. They have a long list of beers to choose from, which is nice when you don't know what you might like. Unfortunately though, the service isn't good. I'd like to chalk it up to being a part of a big party but even still that's really not a valid reason to be as inattentive and annoyed when helping us. First it took about 20 minutes to get my beer, which was the only one I got because the waitress only came back the second time to deliver the bill. It was like she was trying to avoid us like the plague. I heard the food is pretty good, but I didn't get to order any because like I said she never came over to help us really. This place is boss! To be honest, I liked it better under it's original owner when the name still had actual meaning (those in the know caught that). But I'm still a fan of the brew. One of the few places in NY where you can get great German beer (its an extensive menu--from Bavaria to Thuringia!) at pretty good prices. The furniture is nothing special and the decorations are on the "interesting" side, but the spot is spacious and they make a mean Brezel! Decent German beer garden with a reliably good German tap list (though it doesn't change often, from what I remember). A beer that they usually have that I'd highly recommend is the Aventinus (dark wheat doppelbock)--sure, you can find the beer in some specialty stores, but nothing compares to having it on tap. For something lighter, try the Weihenstephan, which is an excellent wheat beer. On Friday/Saturday nights, forget about getting a seat inside or outside, and the noise is usually pretty deafening, so you'll either be shouting all night or getting very close to your companions (which may not be a bad thing). The scene is great for people in their late 20s to early 30s, so you won't be dealing with too-drunk young 'uns that plagues Manhattan bars. The bar food is also pretty decent if you want something light like a pretzel, but there are definitely better places for German food. read more

Great place to hang out on a Saturday afternoon! The beer selection is really good, but don't expect to go here for an enormous meal. They have traditional Beer Garden fare: a small plate of cheese and pickles, a pretzel and mustard, and two versions of bratwurst. Don't get me wrong, the food is authentic and tasty. Everything pairs well with a nice liter of BIERE. The atmosphere is open and airy. Tucked under a shady tree on the corner of Fulton and S. Oxford, this place was a cool respite from the 90 degree weather. The staff is friendly and prompt. Expectations are a funny thing; if I hadn't heard such good things about Der Schwarze Kölner, I probably would have liked it a lot more. That said--it's fine, really. It's all the things you'd expect from a beer hall: big, a bit on the boomy side, with a predictably large selection of neat German beers--yes, they come in large frothy steins and mugs--as well as in bottles. The service was quick and friendly--one waitress managed to take care of the entire room without a hiccup, which is extremely impressive. But despite all the Bavarian trappings, DSK feels strangely devoid of real character. The food is decent enough, but served on flimsy paper plates, it doesn't necessarily inspire, and somehow the room feels slapped together with a minimum of effort. (I kept thinking it felt more like what I imagine a rest stop on the Autobahn would be like--instead of traditional heavy wood tables and benches, there are modern plastic folding chairs and communal tables reminiscent of an IKEA showroom.) Then again, the point of DSK is no doubt to give the Fort Greene locals a place to go and get a little rowdy with a group of friends, and drink a lot of good beer. To that end it certainly fills a void in the area (need I say any more about how lousy the local bars are?) and if the surroundings aren't exactly first rate, I think it's a safe guess that the great majority of folks won't notice or, frankly, won't care. read more

I've been here twice now, once for my birthday. This a good bar for an event where you need a little more room for groups. Long tables accommodate and there is plenty of standing room. You can get table service which is nice when you land a coveted table on a busy night. Decor is minimal, German flags mostly, and there are lots of windows which let light in. I haven't seen any outdoor seating but I'd be surprised if they don't offer that at some point. Beer: yes, please. It's mostly German beer and in appropriate quantity. I'm partial to the 1L stein as it's efficient and feels good in the hand but there are smaller options. There is a full bar for those that don't want beer. Mood is merry, vibe is very Brooklyn. Being from Germany myself, I always love when someone has the idea of doing something, which reminds my of my 'motherland'. Of course, there are things that could be better, but there are also many things that I can say are just awesome. A neighborhood that once prided itself on a culture of sharing and inter-ethnic harmony is now an environment where its new (read: gentrified) population does not have an iota of emotional intelligence. Stunned, I roll my window down and say "excuse me, I am asking if you're leaving" At this point the staff-woman of @diestammkneipe shouts "calm the fuck down." This exchange-full of disrespect and non-communal spirit-is the type that is now rife in Fort Greene. It's seeped in a non-understanding and blatant disregard for the essence of the community in which such establishments & its staff have colonized. What surprised me most is how infant friendly the place is...at least before dark when we were there. Easily two-thirds of the patrons had a baby or toddler with them, including us. There's even a changing station in the bathroom. To the food...the bratwurst was very good as was the Obazda, a soft, semi-pungent cheese spread. I think most of it had to do with the ambiance...the inside felt more like a cafeteria than a traditional German pub. INEXCUSABLE SERVICE and food is okay at best. We had a big group, but we called ahead early and they said they could seat us and made a reservation, so it's not like we were a surprise. Our first round of drinks were taken in a timely manner but from there it was truly a spectacle of incompetence. We had to flag our server down multiple times to take our food order. When some food finally came out, it was only for half our table. The other half didn't get their food for OVER AN HOUR after we had say. I am not exaggerating. Their food arrived right as we were gonna leave, long after the half of the party had finished their meals (it would've been ice cold if we had waited). Throughout when we flagged our server she just said she didn't know what the kitchen was doing, she didn't try to talk to them and explain to us. Multiple people were given the wrong drink as well. It was a disaster. If you can't handle a group, don't act like you can because you're just wasting your energy, our time, and our money. read more
