Duane Reade East Harlem at this location is only good for a grab and go water or snack. I haven't used their pharmacy or shopped a sale in years. The pharmacy customer service has always been lacking at many of their locations. I actually called their downtown headquarters once to complain. I switched to CVS because my health insurance is accepted there and I haven't looked back! If you need more than a small purchase go elsewhere! read more

This is the worst Duane Reade I have ever been to. The customer service is HORRIBLE. I must dedicate hours on the phone in order to speak with someone about my meds. Most of the time, I will wait on hold for hours and still no one will pick up. Today I decided to stick it out because I wanted to have my meds transferred to another pharmacy, and to find out why a med that was supposed to be delivered last week had not arrived. Of course, no one answered. I thought I would get lucky because there were only 2 customers ahead of me, but after 3 hours on hold, I had to give up. I do not understand why the service is so bad. My meds were forwarded to this location because my old one closed, but after such poor service, I can no longer remain a customer of Duane Reade. They need to do better by their customers. p.s. This pharmacy is a Very disappointing experience. The staff here, especially Stephanie, does everything in their power not to help you. Simple requests turn into unnecessary problems, and there is zero effort to provide decent customer service. I've been to other Duane Reade locations and they are so much better--more helpful, more professional, and actually willing to assist customers. This 3rd Ave location on 106th St is by far the worst. Pathetic is the only word that can describe to level of service at this location. The service has never been good here but you could kind of at least get a prescription filled within a reasonable time. Today my wife's doctor wrote her a script at 10:30. I when you pick it up at 3:30, waited on a twenty minute line only to be told it wasn't ready. This is just not reasonable and it's time to switch. I definitely not the best duane trade but it does the job when you need something. They have deals time to time and sometimes no extremely long lines due to limited staff at the register. I only put one star so I would be able to submit this review, but in essence they deserve a -5 stars! I Was picking up a prescription from the pharmacy unfortunately had to deal with a lady who stated her name was Bree but I believe her real name must be degenerate! Extremely unprofessional, uneducated and completed disrespectful employee who works in the pharmacy. She believes that people picking up their prescriptions should wait until she feels like doing her job which is Attending to customers waiting for their prescription medication! What a poor representative of any business! This Lady has a nasty demeanor with poor work ethics and should be fired! Employees like this will make you lose customers which will lead to another one of your locations being closed! I hope you addressed this issue so no other customers have to deal with such ignorance! Worst pharmacy in the entire country. 4 years and they still can't remember to order my prescription every month and have an excuse every time. How hard is it to keep something in stock that you know one person gets regularly and can't go without experiencing withdrawals. Every month they leave me with chills nasea cold and clammy bc I can't the medication for a day or two. This is dangerously negligent. And now they keep randomly closing the store for hours or days at a time and won't say why or get anyone their meds. Only pharmacy in a low income area leaving us with no choice. The lines are over an hour long regularly. The staff are rude and dumb. They never answer the phone and will always keep you on hold for at least 45 mins. Kept me on hold over an hour today and transferred me 4 times each time asked me the same thing and just transferred without a word. Last time I got transferred to the first person who hung up. Worst pharmacy ever. My doctor ordered a cough syrup for me at 9am this morning. I received a call at 3:56pm stating that the syrup was ready. Then another 3 prescriptions were ordered at 1pm. They said it would take 30 min and then they closed for lunch. It's now 443pm. I've been on hold for 40 min now and the operator said that there are only 2 callers on ahead of me. What is going on? I've lived in this neighborhood for over 15 years now. This Duane Reade is usually always understaffed and the staff who did show up to work are usually unfriendly. To make matters worse, and to make our neighborhood seem worse, they've put almost every item behind locked glass cases and you need to request "employee assistance" for basic items such as shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste, etc. In NO other neighborhood have I seen this foolishness. Not to mention when you press the button for assistance it takes 5 minutes for someone to show up and then they show up as if you bothered them. Its a nuisance. Also being that this is a predominantly Latinx/Black neighborhood it would help if the beauty products reflected that. There are hardly ever enough of the shades of makeup that truly represent the demographic. Furthermore (and then I'm getting back to work), I've dropped off a package as a part of their partnership with FedEx. I was continuously monitoring the tracking to see that it was given to the driver. After 2 days I called and the manager informed me that "oh, it was in the pile of packages received this whole time"..... how did it get there? That's quite careless if you ask me. Better off going to a FedEx location to ensure proper handling of your packages. Other than that, the one thing I can say is that this DR is usually clean and I've never had issues with the pharmacy. Absolutely thee worst Duane Reade I've ever been to in the United States of America! I'm better off going to CVS or a private pharmacy across the street. The door doesn't work, that's a tell tale. If you have your prescription sent to this Duane Reade PREPARE YOURSELF! You will be waiting 30min to get to the cashier, 5min to explain what you're picking up, 10min for an unfriendly cashier to get help with the computer, 30min to get your prescription filled, and 5min to walk around piles of boxes to the exit door that doesn't open. This is the worst duane reade in all of New York City. Avoid at all costs. I have been coming here for over a year now because it's the closest to me and I need to pick up my medicine. The employees who work here are extremely dysfunctional but it's mainly 4 people. There is never anyone to open the deodorant and vitamins and everything that's locked up you will be waiting for years for someone to unlock the products locked shelves. The employees would rather stay in the back room. The line is crazy long and no one ever wants to get on the register. This has been happening for for over a year ever since I started using this duane reade. Some of the employees are actually helpful but because of the few that are not that is the reason why this Duane reade is horrible. Again if you can avoid this Duane reade please do. Boy, I wish I would have read this Yelp page before dropping in to this Duane Reade. Trust me, these one-star reviews are accurate. And if you're thinking, well, I live around the corner and it's more convenient to send my prescription here instead of a better pharmacy, DON'T DO IT. Just go elsewhere. Our story: My fiance had tooth surgery and sent his prescription to this DR. He's in increasing pain because the meds in question are the painkillers he's supposed to take for the surgery and they are taking forever. In our case, my fiance has Aetna insurance. He has pharmacy coverage, but because of a poor process on Aetna's part, the pharmacy has to call Aetna to confirm coverage. Ok, no big deal. It's no one's fault here but Aetna. My fiance did everything he was supposed to, given the situation. And it's not DR's fault that this process isn't easy. We understand that. However, DR's team decided to take his medical insurance card and sit on it FOR 40 STRAIGHT MINUTES. We sat there patiently as they pushed scripts out and cashed out over 20 customers, one after the next. Not one time did they say anything to us, update us on the process, or anything. And it's not like they were overwhelmed with people - the four folks working in the pharmacy were able to process everyone in a reasonable manner. But not us. Finally, my fiance called Aetna. He got through on the first try, no issues, and he asked them to call DR, since no one was helping us. Aetna called DR... AND WE LISTENED TO THE PHONE RING 100X WHILE EVERYONE WALKED AROUND DOING NOTHING. NO ONE PICKED IT UP. At this point, we told them - hey, we got Aetna on the phone! Please pick up so we can settle this! We would like to go! He is in pain! And no one listened. They just looked at us with mouths agape like dim bulbs. So finally, I had to escalate the situation. I went to find a manager and came across a woman who said she was not a manager - there was no manager on duty, apparently - but she would help. She walked back there and finally talked to the pharmacist. It started to get settled, but at this point, we're 45 minutes in - longer than the surgery, mind you - and my fiance is in pain. What was their reason it took so long? The pharmacist said she called Aetna 3 times and they hung up on her. Frankly, I don't believe her because my fiance called and got them on the first try. Also, what was the plan? If they did hang up 3x (which they likely didn't), were you just going to keep the Aetna card, not ever let us know what was happening, and let us rot there until the end of time? You couldn't even manage a status update? Guess not. And for that matter, even if everything she said was true, why couldn't you pick up the phone when we did the work for you? WE LITERALLY HAD AETNA CALL YOU SO YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO. Never once did we get an apology or a "thanks for bearing with us." We got a snobby, unmotivated crew who is in desperate need of customer service training. We will not be going there for any reason from now on. read more

The only reason that I visit the store is its convenient location at the corner of 3rd Avenue and 106th Street, and the fact that it has a Chase ATM. Otherwise I'll walk 7-9 blocks south for competing pharmacy chains where I spend most of my money. The store itself is relatively clean and well lit. However, shelving and product placement are consistently sloppy, and there are more "surprises" with respect to things I though were on sale, than I can tolerate at the register as a result. Management never takes responsibility for its sloppy/lazy, misleading labeling and signage. Also, the lines are long, and it generally takes 10 minutes or longer to check out. Particularly annoying as you tend to waste 10-15 minutes in line only to find out that what you thought was priced X is actually priced Y. Also worth mentioning is that there is a gym located directly upstairs from this drug store, and the sounds of thudding and crashing are fairly continuous. read more

Two times I have been called saying my prescription is ready and both times when I go to pick it up, there's a problem. HOW!? WHY!? I was told it was ready so why isn't it ready? Why do you tell me there's a problem or you don't have that drug in stock? How is that possible? Oh yeah...I called to speak to a manager and was hung up on AND put on hold forever. No thanks. I will be avoiding this place as much as possible. It's a convenient walk but not worth the hassle. I give it two stars so I seem a bit equitable, but really, other than the fact that this Duane Reade has the normal "Duane Reade Goods and Services" it has TERRIBLE customer service, if that makes a difference to you (FYI: I know nothing of the pharmacy). Cashiers are pretty ineffective and not at all customer service-oriented. Barely make eye contact or are friendly, which I normally wouldn't care about, but I literally had to wait for one to finish his texting to get checked out. They are often talking amongst themselves instead of doing their job (or doing it MUCH slower). There are never enough of them behind the registers: they have very little concept of line control. They regularly close at 7:50pm instead of their advertised 8:00pm. I mean, I know these guys don't get paid much, but I would assert that their upward mobility is stifled by their performance on their job. Anyway, I recommend going to Walgreens! read more

Even after the new construction they cant seem to get it together. It seems to be only three people working at a time, and that includes the pharmacy. Having to wait on there lines makes you just walk to the one on madison ave. I ordered pictures over a week ago and got an email saying they were ready. I sent someone to pick them up and the cashier said they werent ready so i called twenty minutes later and lo and behold they were ready on the day promised. So i'm home going through my one year olds newer pictures and every last one of them is blurry or dark and thats not the way my pictures looked on my camera or camera phone. I'm throughly disgusted with this store because there is nothing convenient about it. If you go be prepared to wait on two lines that never seen to move forward, just continue to grow. read more

This is a pretty good Duane Reade. It recently got a bit of a "make-over" and now looks like the nicer/newer Duane Reade stores: better floors, new shelves, etc. It's close to my apartment, so I usually go there for medication and other things I may need now and again (Advil, tampons, shampoo, and so on). The pharmacy has always been good, pretty fast service and the pharmacist is usually really helpful and kind. Sometimes there aren't enough cashiers so buying your stuff can take a while, due to a long (and slow) line, but it's never been so bad as to really annoy me. Overall, I'm usually fairly satisfied with this Duane Reade! read more

Store needs to restore more frequently with fresh merchandise! The only pro is that it's open late, everything's around the neighbor closes at 7pm. They should use that to their advantage. read more

After placing an order for prints on the Walgreens app I get an order summary that prompts me to pick up my photos at 9pm that night. I come to the store the following day at 7pm and they are not ready. I am currently waiting on a large order of photos. 115 prints to be exact. I give this Duane Reade 2 stars because I have seen 2 fights here. You know, not anything like those lame fights you typically see in Duane Reade...."Police usher 2 men from the scene...manager states no one was injured but they will have to reconsider their buy-one-get-one-free policy" or "Post-Easter mark down leaves 4 injured & 1 dead. Investigation continues on Fox 5 news!" Oh, Fox News.....Shame Shame Shame! But really, these were those "excuse me I was first in line" "oh no you didn't!" "wam" "pop" "bang" etc w/the hair-pulling, knocking down displays, & boys getting high in the back better wake up & call the cops Unfortunately the security guard is about 60+ & employees are forced to wait until police back-up arrives (both times) before fighting ends. All in all, crowds expect a big event& DR does not disappoint! Reminds me of growing up in a small town when there isn't a football/basketball game.....everyone to WalMart-it's going down in the parking lot! Not to mention it's pretty trashy & one time I went back to pay for something they forgot to ring up & ended up getting scolded for "not paying"? Pharmacy shorted me at least 20 pills of a 90 pill prescription. I noticed after a week and a half that the bottle was looking a little empty and i havent even taken the pills everyday. The script is for 3 pills a day and i've only been taking them 2x/day. I keep the pills secure bc it is a controlled substance. So i have no idea how they went so fast. I called and they said they double counted and they initialed the bottle. It's more upsetting bc i dont have insurance and paid so much money for it but of course there isnt much that can be done bc they'll either believe youre selling it or abusing it. ridiculous read more

I've never been a fan of this location but it's a must because its the only one around the neighborhood. This is New York so anything is expected. In this particular location, I've seen a rat run freely around, a robbery, and a sleeping security guard. But tonight was the icing on the cake. Working in retail/costumer service myself, I don't do well with rude employees. I simply got in line and waited like everyone else did for 15 minutes to return something I purchased last week. DERRICK was the person I was unfortunately helped by. I stepped to the counter and said 'return" and all of a sudden I was being yelled at.. then he turns and walks away, not to mention in front of a long line of customers waiting behind me. Because of his accent, I didn't understand a word he said, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to pick up on rude behavior. Thankfully JEFF, the on duty manager, came over and helped me politely find the best solution for me, which was to return my items. SIMPLE. maybe a little more time consuming than a regular checkout, but SIMPLE. Thanks Jeff, BOOOO DERRICK. I've been going to this Duane Reade for a year now and it's not as bad as people say. Staff isn't always rude, sometimes you can get someone extremely friendly that's willing to help you. A lot of hygienic products are locked up because the location isn't always a safe one. This store doesn't have a wide variety of makeup and other products. I haven't picked up any prescription yet, but I wouldn't risk it at this location. Besides the pharmacy I'll definitely continue to buy from here. read more

I don't know why I go back to this location to pick up the photos ordered online. Because that is the first option I am given when placing my order online? Now I will definitely walk blocks to avoid the experience from HELL! It never fails. They mess up my pictures. Mine are fine, I just get other people's pics and I have to go back and return them, because that is just who I am. The worst part is the customer service: the older Latin lady who does not greet you, will not speak to you, and will just utter "sign" or another command, without ever including the words "hello, please or thank you" in her vocabulary. You wait for her on a long line, then she orders you to go pick up your pics in the photo center. Even if there is no one behind me, she refuses to make a few steps to pick up my photos. I have to change lines and this big Black lady who, again lacks social skills,refuses for me to pay & barks at me to go back to the end of the first line:Avoid Duane Read on 3rd Ave & 106th St! And then there is this big younger Black guy who does not help but just stands around playing with his ball... It is totally surrealistic! I speak English, French and Spanish fluently - I am a teacher - it should not be that hard for these folks to interact in a professional, courteous way!
