Had a Ruben and fries, good service and good food for being on the road. Can't ask for more!

One member in my family got a Beet salad and said it was the best thing she's had. I got a Waterfront burger which was also pretty good. The lake view was the best part of our dinner, though.

My wife and I had dinner at The Waterfront this evening with our daughter and her family. We…read morearrived around 4:30 PM basically because my wife and I are old farts and like to eat early. The meal began with appetizers, the spinach artichoke dip and the corn bread brûlée, both of which were excellent. Before the appetizers came out our waiter took our entree orders. My wife, who is a light eater, ordered the baked cheese shrimp scampi as her entree. I don't frequently go to a restaurant which has osso buco as an offering, so I jumped on that. The osso buco is $42 dollars and I was surprised to learn that it doesn't include a side salad or soup, especially when there are other entrees for $28 which do include those choices. My son in law ordered the peach chicken and requested his side be the bang bang Brussels sprouts. He was told at 4:50 PM there weren't enough Brussels sprouts left for him to have some. Given the time of day, this was surprising. Even if maybe they were popular at lunch, this was poor planning on the chef's part. When we dine out, which is often, we expect to be able to finish our appetizers before the main dishes show up, but that didn't happen at The Waterfront. I won't speak for my daughter's family, but I will comment on my wife's and my meals. The baked cheese shrimp scampi had way too much cheese. Now those are words I thought I would never speak, but in this case it applies. The shrimp were on the smaller size, I guess that's why they call them shrimp, and the cheese was overload. As I might have given you the impression above, I love osso buco and was sitting there salivating at the thought of enjoying some. The osso buco I was served was disappointing. Portions of it fell off the bone and other portions didn't. The taste was good, but when you're expecting meat to essentially melt in your mouth, and parts of it were chewy and dry, it certainly doesn't meet expectations. Then, while we were still eating, and I had food remaining on my plate that I intended to finish eating, here comes the waiter to close the check out. What's with that? Over all, The Waterfront is not a restaurant we would choose to revisit.

Last Friday was a date night for me and Gayle, as we opted to try for kick ass meal out here at the Hi-Lo Club just outside Lakefield. The restaurant and bar was about a 30 minute drive from the family cabin on the East Shore of Spirit Lake (Orleans) and with a lot less traffic that any fine dining choice almost as far on West Lake Okoboji. Our only regret was that we opted not to go downstairs to the Speakeasy after dinner, where live music was in full swing. The only irritation (if that) was a fairly loud bride and friends dinner a couple tables over. But I quibble as Gayle and I thoroughly enjoyed our romantic evening together within our cozy booth. Here's what we ordered: - Bombay Sapphire Martini (Up/Olives) and then a Malbec (Gayle). - Mocktail (Cranberry Pom Spritz) and then a Sauvignon Blanc (Eric) - Filet Beef Tenderloin with Asparagus and Caesar Salad (Gayle) - Canadian Walleye with Caesar Salad and Wild Rice Pilaf. - Coffee (Eric) and a shared piece of Champagne Cake (See Picture). Our Caesar Salads and Gayle's steak were outstanding. My Walley was excellent, but I wanted more of what Gayle was enjoying. The cake was of course icing on our evening. Total tab? About $160 with tax and tip. Special kudos to our great (and very busy) waitress and the Prohibition-era atmosphere. We only visit the Iowa Great Lakes once in the Summer, so look for us to be back here next year.
