That banana fritter (chuoi chien) is glorious! Crunchy, not too sweet, and a little nutty from the sesame seeds. I'll be dreaming of that fritter for a long time, I just know it. The green papaya salad was good. The yogurt was cloyingly sweet but the texture was smooth and rich like creme brulee. The coconut jello in the young coconut fruit was fun and not too sweet. They have other prepared foods (banh cuon, xoi, che, vegetarian stir fries, banh mi, and egg rolls). Beware that the egg rolls aren't always fresh. The tray I was given was OLD, oily, and chewy. I refer to this place as the "Vietnamese Snack Shop" because that's kinda the vibe I feel from it. They have a lot of variety of food to choose from and get, but come earlier in the day because that's when everything is fresh. It's even better if you early on a weekday because there's less people in the store to so you can really grab and go the food you want. Sticky Rice: This is a hit most of the time (I'd say about 80% of the time) and a miss some other times because the sticky rice isn't as soft evenly throughout. The sweet one (colored) is always good because it's sweet but not too sweet. There's one with chinese sausage and some type of ham on it I think it's called xoi man, and I always enjoy eating that one too. Banh Gio: This is a minced meat and mushroom mixture surrounded by a rice filling and wrapped in bamboo leaves. The interesting thing about this one compared to others I've had is that they include a quail egg in it. It's really balanced flavor, definitely always picking this one up when I'm there. Banh Cuon: This is THE thing to get here if you come early enough before they run out. I normally get the one with the minced meat and mushroom inside and it is the best banh cuon I've had at an affordable price from a store/restaurant. Banh mi: Pretty basic, not much to say here but get it if you want it. Che: They have such a wide variety, be sure to try it all out because it's all really good. All the ones that I've gotten have a good coconut flavor to it, which I love! There are a lot more stuff in the store other than the ones I've reviewed above, but those are my normal go-tos. The only thing that is a real bummer about this place is that there's no real structure around the sticky rice and che areas (especially the che areas). So if you come on a busy day, it's hard to tell where the line even begins or who can really help you. This is definitely a downside for a timid me with a bunch of Vietnamese aunties hoarding around these areas waiting for their orders because I end up just avoiding it not knowing what to do or where to stand and I end up just getting something else. Had a worst experience at this store. My uncle went here last week to bought a cup of pandan coconut sweet rice. As the serving lady handed him the cup over the top of the counter, they dropped it on the floor. My uncle picked it up and asked if he could get a new once since the one he dropped got dirty. But the serving lady refused because "the whole thing wasn't on the floor, if I took the dirty one back who should I sell it to". What an attitude from a food store staff, they wanted the customer to pay for the dirty food rather than making him a new portion that only worth $3!!! I've been getting all kind of food from here for almost a decade and this year they charged $5 for a smaller cup of che 3 màu and only filled up 75% full, I kindly asked the check out person, she said they supposed to fill up to only 75% and left 25% room for ice but there was no ice in my che, she added if I wanted 100% full and add ice to it, very rude but I guess that's their house rules and that cup only worth $3.50 . This place is not a joke - you must know vietnamese to come here, but they have SO MUCH VIETNAMESE DESSERT. They have everything you can imagine, but primarily their strength is in Che (vietnamese jellies) and Xoi (vietnamese sticky rice). They even have this coconut jelly dessert inside a coconut that I've seen in one other Vietnamese store from the Bay Area and Vietnam itself (it's one of my favorites). They have a whole counter dedicated to each for you to mix and match of what you want. The people who work there pretty much only speak vietnamese - the menu is also in vietnamese, so either know vietnamese or know exactly what you want and what it looks like. A friend and I came in where we did not know vietnamese.. and let's say it was a a game choosing what to eat and not knowing what we were going to get. If you want authentic Vietnamese-style desserts come here. The desserts here are very traditional and similar to the ones you can find off the streets carts in Vietnam. I always stop by and pick up a few things for my parents before I visit them. They love it. They are known for their fresh, sweet and steamed glutinous rice (xoi), sold in a variety of flavors. My favorite is the durian (not everyone's cup of tea, I know) made with fresh durian. If I am craving something savory, I'll get the glutinous rice with mixed meats on top. They also sell a mixture of four xoi flavors if you want to try a bit of everything. They also have a large variety of vietnamese cold/hot desserts which are eaten sort of like a soup (che). They sell every single kind imaginable. I like the corn one (che bap) with coconut sauce on top. Be warned that some of their pudding style che can get really sweet. My parents complained before that it is way too sweet for their taste. Amongst the desserts are several other snacks/to-go style foods in saran wrap, such as springs rolls and savory steamed buns (banh bao). In the refrigerator, they have fresh soy milk (sua dau nanh) and penny wort juice (nuoc rau ma). Everything is cheap and affordable, but they only take CASH!!! The che is some of the freshest and best tasting stuff I've had in Houston / ever. I've had the che dac biet, che truoi, che bap, che thai, and che .. I don't remember because I've eaten so much of it. The xoi here is also bomb. I've had the xoi with the chicken, sausage, and shrimp. Fresh moist and tasty. I've eaten a couple of the other homemade style appetizers here too. This place is badass and the price can't be beat. Whenever I'm in Houston, this is my go to place for Vietnamese desserts and snacks if my mother doesn't make it for me, of course. This place is super clean with many options to choose from. I love how everything is organized from the different types of ches, to xoi, and banh mi stations, you can get your Vietnamese food fix here. The middle is filled with more sweets and snacks and there are different types of authentic drinks you could order. They also have little meals like banh bao, banh bot loc, banh cuon, etc... There are hundreds of options. Everything is delicious and authenic. The only thing I dislike about Duc Phuong is that it is cash only. Most places in Bellaire is which is really unfortunate. Ah this reminds me of the Vietnamese dessert shops back home except better. They have tons of desserts including che, drinks, and carbs for you to pick and choose from. I absolutely love their sticky rice (xoi) especially since there is a variety. I am addicted to their durian one but definitely try their other ones if you're not a durian fan. I also had one of their tofu cup desserts (the pandan one) which was also very good! I have only seen the typical tofu with that brown sweet liquid so I thought it was cool how they serve the tofu here with several flavours including coconut, durian, mung beans, etc. If you're not in the mood for tofu, they also serve che and you can't go wrong with that. Very disappointed - I bought 2 boxes of banh cuon nhan thit at around 10:30am-11am on a Sunday for my mom and my family. The drive from the store to my mom's house was ~30 mins, and the banh cuon was placed inside the car with AC. I went straight to my mom's from the store. My mom immediately placed her box in the fridge and by the time she took it out to have dinner, the banh cuon was spoiled. My box had the same issue. I called the store and was advised that it was because it had meat and that we should use it within the same day, which we did. Even the store was willing to trade for new boxes, we live so far away so wasn't able to make the trade the next day. But that is besides the point. It is quite questionable about the quality with the banh cuon that it was spoiled in the same day, even when it was kept in the refrigerator right after we get home!
