Duc Phuong Thach Che offers "chipotle" style Che options but also tons of Vietnamese goodies from sweets to savory items. It's quite hectic here, especially on weekends but it's worth it if you have a craving! Just got 2 Che hue here. Super delicious! Order xoi sau rien and com dep also. Che hue. There's so much stuff in this Che and it's not too sweet. Green jelly, beans, nuts, and so much more. If you're into stuff like Che Thai, Che ba mau, etc, you should definitely try this. Xoi sau rien got it Togo and haven't tried it yet. Com dep, got it Togo as well. The place is set up like a fish market but instead of fish, it's deserts. You tell them what you want and they give it to you, but you pay at the cashier. This is our family's go-to Vietnamese dessert/ snacks place for pretty much the past three years. And no, I'm not just saying this because one of my good friend's family owns the place; it's actually THAT good. It's actually really funny because I used to tag along with my parents to this place all the time but I never knew that it had a connection to a classmate. Then I asked for an extra cup of ice for my tofu but the lady refused, she said that were too many containers!! My mom comes here every Sunday to get their xôi but now they cant give a cup of ice?!! I think I just found my new favorite che (sweet Vietnamese dessert) place!! It was a coincidence that I found this place because I was in this shopping strip for another restaurant. The restaurant wasn't opened yet, so I just wandered around. I'm so glad I found this place, although, my diet isn't so happy about it. Lol. It's a fairly large store for what they're serving. It's an order-and-go type of environment. Freshly made che, banh uot (steamed rice paper), sticky rice, drinks, and other Vietnamese items. Everything is very affordable (which is bad for me because I want to buy more than I should). There are prepackaged food items that make for an easy grab-and-go lunch. They sell vietnamese sandwiches for $3.00. In the center of the store are shelves with prepackaged desserts, sweet breads, and pastries. In the fridge are cold drinks ready to cool you down. The small size for the che is $1.75, and the large is $3.00. The tofu drinks are $3.00. They also make tofu pudding with ginger syrup, which I love! They serve it as, or they make these sweet tofu drinks that I tried for the first time. It can be served warm or cold, and they mix the tofu pudding with different sweet items like durian, taro, green bean, etc. A variation on che, you could say. I tried the durian with tofu pudding for $3.00, and it hit the spot!! I highly recommend!! The durian is sweet, but the tofu pudding isnt. They add a little ginger syrup, and all the flavors meld wonderfully! It warms your tummy. If you don't like durian, then do try the different flavors! I also got the Che Khoai Mon Bot Loc which is this sweet taro ball in a tapioca covering. The sweet soup wasn't too sweet. It was delicious!! Another highly recommended item. The customer service is wonderful as well for this area. The cashier was awesome!! He was sweet, and kept saying please and thank you. The ladies behind the counter are attentive to your orders. Good service is hard to come by around Chinatown. There are a couple of tables inside and maybe two tables outside if you decide to stick around and enjoy your purchases. Ample amount of parking space because it's located in a large shopping strip. I will definitely be back on my cheat day to try the other items. SUMMARY: Great customer service. Highly recommend! Oh My! Oh My! Oh My! If you're having a sweet tooth and love Vietnamese desserts then stop your car! As you're walking into this place it's filled with all kinds of sticky rice that you can choose from. Of course my Favorite is the Durian Sticky Rice. Many people cannot tolerate the smell of this exotic fruit, but as for me it has a very creamy & rich. The Durian Stick Rice has a yellow color to it and it has little chunks of fresh Durian inside of it. The rice is a bit sticky but it brings a sweet touch when you're chewy on it. Next they do have all sorts of Che, which is also another famous Vietnamese desserts. There is plenty of Che that you can choose from. But on another note they do carry Banh Mi which is French bread stuff with meat and veggies. Banh Cuon which is a thin layer of rice paper rolled. The variety of things they have here is amazing. A great place to get a fix on all your cravings. I bought 3 different xoi and 2 different che, as well as other things. All is delicious. My only complaint is that parking sucks, and even though you stand in line there's people who cut and the staff doesn't do a very good job serving who was there first and making sure you got everything you wanted. Therefore I was left there wanting to get other things but the left me just standing there while attending to rude pushy people who just jump in and grab the staff's attention away. This is definitely the place to go when you're in the mood for che or xoi! They have the biggest assortment of che I have ever seen and they all are literally so good! And I'm not saying that to just say it, but because I've literally tried each kind! This was such a hidden and random find! We were wandering around Asiatown (in 90+ degrees heat. Typical tourist.) when we happened upon this little store. The plaza itself seemed a bit more quiet when we were there, but this place was bustling! Definitely a must-go. We only paid $17 for four sticky rice portions ($2 each!), a big plate of pork and mushroom chang fen (large flat rice noodles sold by weight), and a tofu "drink" dessert with pandan. Everything was homemade and simple. Ambience: Looks like a cross between a cafeteria and a market. Going in, head to the left to start ordering various foods (imagine an entire row of multi-colored sticky rice! I had a field day here. TIP: They were also very sweet and willing to put two rice options in one bowl.) Keep ordering, but make sure you grab a tray to carry everything. In the middle of the room is a large table with even more food. TIP: the food in the cafeteria lines are more for bulk ordering. The table in the middle have more meal combinations, which are better if you want to see how a particular food is usually eaten with which garnishes, sauces, etc. Food: Sticky Rice: They had both savory and sweet. We tried a savory one that had Vietnamese corn, which was more grain-like and not sweet and crunchy like yellow sweet corn, and fried shallots. My favorite, though, was the green pandan (Southeast Asian leaf used in cooking and desserts) sticky rice with coconut on top - lightly sweet and slightly chewy. We also had two more sweet ones: a purple red bean one and an orange one (not sure what plant) - both were good, but less sweet and paled in comparison to the pandan. Flatten Rice with Pandan and Coconut Shavings: this was tasty and the flattened rice was something I haven't tried before. It was still very soft, but it loses the chewiness and stickiness of regular rice. Flat Rice Noodles with Pork and Mushrooms Wrapped Inside: with or without fish sauce, this one was delicious! The rice noodles were fresh, not hard at all, and the ground pork and shitake mushrooms meant this savory dish was a great precursor to the sticky rice desserts. Fermented Rice Ball: they took the rice used to make rice wine and made it into a snack. The alcohol taste was very light, but as you bite into it, it was sweet, light, and also sharp. You might have expected the rice ball to be dense with the texture of rice, but, instead, the rice was more like a sponge. As you bite down, the rice wine/water starts gushing out! Definitely worth a try, although I wouldn't try a second. Be careful if you want to bite down on half of one, though. Recommendation: Quick grab to-go whether for a snack, lunch or as an additional side during dinner! If I am ever back in Houston, I would definitely go again. Wished I tried the sticky rice with Chinese sausage (apologies, not sure what the alternative names of this sausage are) and bamboo. And the banh mi. And the other sticky rice. And the tofu dessert. After stuffing my face from a delicious, savory restaurant in Bellaire area, I was needing sweets to ease the grease in my belly. Being a usual Yelp user, I found this place since it was nearby and thought I should give it a go. When I pulled up to the parking lot, I was not surprised by the strip center filled with other Vietnamese/Chinese eateries. As soon as I walked into the store, the aroma was sweet and view was colorful. I immediately dived to the "che" section and couldn't help but notice their che khoai mon bot loc. I immediately raised my hand and asked for assistance. A sweet lady came over to help me scoop up these beauties with a ladle, and poured them into a cup. I was eagerly hoping she would top it off and she did! I also saw che khoai mi banh lot right next to it, so I asked for a cup of that as well. Once again, she didn't fail to top it off! My sister noticed how my eyes glistened with eagerness in wanting to purchase the entire store, so she immediately stopped me from buying any more. I pouted my lips and headed to the counter and shocked by the price for these desserts. So cheap and affordable! I couldn't wait any longer so I went ahead and opened my desserts, dived in with a plastic spoon, and was in heaven. Both desserts had the same coconut milk base which wasn't on the sweet side, but each had different solid concoctions. The jelly and tapioca balls were chewy and blended well with the coconut milk. Yummmyyyy...all the rice desserts here deserve 5 stars. On Sunday's this place is packed with a lot of people but they keep the line moving with one cash register. CASH ONLY of course. You point and they pack what you want behind the counters and you go pay. Lots of other random snacks and bread on the way to the register but you can pass all of that up. Their customer service is so poor and very rude, I chose to put a different selection of ingredients for my dessert which I always pick everytime I have came here. I'm a usual customer. Come here at least once a week or every other week when my pregnancy allowed me. Last week my son wanted the coconut jelly so I went to get it and the lady with the eye problem -not to be disrespectful but that's the only way I can identify her beside saying the Asian lady- said $5/each. I got two small ones. I paid without hesitation since there was no price tag on it. However, yesterday I went again and this time I got a large and a small and the diff "Asian" lady said the price is different for a large and a small. Apparently the small is $4 and the large was $5. The prices are awesome as well, I went a little overboard and got 7 different xoi and banh, and two cups of che and it was all under $20. You really can't beat that. My dad takes me here on the weekends when I am out at the parents house on the west side. I love che! I usually get the che 3 mau. It is so good. Nothing better than bean paste, coconut puree/juice, and tapioca/gelatin. So delish. The place is small and can get pretty packed on the weekend. I can tell their ingredients are fresh. Some che places in town seem to have old refrigerated items. Would probably be a good thing to visit with a knowledgeable person if it's your first time trying che.
