I am a die hard Peking Gourmet fan (located in Bailey's crossroads) but Duck Chang's is an excellent second choice because of its convenient location and you don't have to wait hours or need an rsvp a week beforehand. I also appreciate that they have half ducks on the menu because then you can also order something to enjoy without dying of overeating. Their duck is pretty solid here and they have the nice crispness to their skin. The meat was tender and not oily at all. They serve green onions with the duck which seems kind of old because they were really crunchy but whatever it was just onions. We also ordered their general tso's chicken which you can't go wrong with. Perfect amount of breading and meat and the sauce was yum. The service is always great here and the lady serving us was so sweet. I also like the huge wall mirror because it makes the restaurant seem less stuffy because of its small size. I wish the lights were a little brighter but all stuff I can overlook for some good duck. read more

This family owned restaurant has been open since 1975. The service here is really good. The owners always come around to make sure everything is okay. The Peking duck here is just as good as the duck at Peking Gourmet and it is slightly less expensive. The only bad comment I have is that the decor is outdated, but I guess it kind of adds to the hole in the wall charm. read more

Yummy! The Peking duck is excellent. We ordered half a duck (about 16 dollars) and duck fried rice total bill was $30 with two sodas. The peking duck was crispy, juicy, and all around very good. The duck fried riced smelled so good and it was good as left overs. I wish they put some salt in it but other wise it was really good also. I would definitely come back. The service was really good. they were really attentive, nice, smile, and always saying "enjoy your meal". Its a nice family restaurant and i'm all for supporting family restaurant. read more

This is an excellent and friendly family-owned restaurant. Their Peking-style duck is awesome and is the reason I came here. You can get the duck in the traditional Beijing form (they cut it in front of you too!) or there are other preparations too. I had the duck three ways (the traditional way, a duck bone soup, and duck with bean sprouts) all of which were delicious. I am looking forward to trying some of their other dishes the next time as well. The staff at Duck Chang's is so friendly and came up to chat and check up on several times. Where do I begin? I've lived in the area for over 20 years and last week was my FIRST time to try Duck Chang's. Since Covid, my boyfriend and I had been trying to support all local businesses by doing take out. Duck Chang's came to mind and I am soooooo thankful we ordered! First - order was clear and easy. Second - typically fried food tends to become soggy if not eaten fresh out of the kitchen... their careful packaging of the ducks skin in a separate box to portion ratio along with its price compared to Peking Gourmet is literally incomparable. Their Peking Duck is well worth the money. Super generous portion. It's good try it order it enjoy it :) Also we ordered green chili pepper pork. So simple, taste like comfort home cooked meal, and so tasty. The pepper and pork ratio was just perfect ( Mama Chang is heavy on the pepper and little on the pork ). I can't remember worse Chinese food. The chicken was low quality dark meat. The sauces were bad. We ordered two different chicken entrees and they tasted nearly the same. The fried Cheetons were cold and drippy despite us picking up and eating the food within 10 minutes of our quoted pickup time. I didn't pay attention to the order. Despite ordering two entrees that come standard with an order of white rice at every other Chinese restaurant in the world, we received ours with one order of poor tasting brown rice. I gave feedback and 24 hours later didn't get a response. I don't know how a 4.5 start restaurant can be this disappointing. read more

It's incredibly magnificent that my family and I have been going here ever since I was a baby. From the service to the food, everything here is amazing. My family always go here for the Peking Duck, Chicken with Chili Peppers (my personal favorite), Combination Fried Rice, and Beef Chow Fun (dry version). There has never been a time where the food was ever bad; we always left with full stomachs and empty plates. The duck is probably the best we've ever had, and is one of the reasons we always go back. The service is great here, reasonable and reliable. The owner, Pete, is always nice to us and is an excellent conversationalist. Most of the time we go here with our family (party of around 12), and although the restaurant is a bit on the small side, they still are able to seat us. Despite the fact that the restaurant is dated, it really fits the ambiance leaving a comfortable mood. From someone who has practically been going here for 16-17 years, I HIGHLY recommend Duck Chang's Restaurant. Two stars, barely. Great/friendly service dragged it up from the one star the food rates. Unpleasant -- ghastly -- chicken with sesame/peanut sauce. Drenched in nasty sauce, pieces of unpleasant texture chicken. I left plenty on plate and declined taking it to go, most unusual for me. Sizzling tofu with vegetables in pepper with black pepper was tolerable but was so salty I wouldn't have guessed it supposedly had any pepper. Three people at table ordered Peking duck -- their orders came out separately, already carved -- not carved at table as Peking Gourmet Inn does it nicely. I stole a piece of skin from my wife's plate -- fatty, unpleasant. So many other choices for this cuisine, no reason to eat here. read more

When it comes to finding delicious and authentic Chinese food, this place NEVER disappoints. I've been ordering from here ever since I can remember and it's the best Chinese I've ever had hands down. I would definitely recommend the Peking duck, general Tso's chicken, spare ribs, lo mein, and dumplings. Every carryout also comes with complementary pancakes and spring onions which pair perfectly with some duck and plum sauce. Everything has the perfect amount of spice and flavor and is cooked to perfection. The prices are fair and the service is quick and run by such a loving family (Peter is awesome), making this the number one place in town to get a nice Chinese meal. read more

Came here on a Tuesday night after working out and we were hungry. We ordered the duck of course and for our appetizers we had soup: egg drop, seafood and a spicy soup with pork, cabbage, mushrooms etc. that was really good. The duck was cut up and brought to our table and we all attacked it like vultures. I can't remember the last time I had duck, but all the memories came flooding back. I think the last time was a Peking Gourmet (PG). I think the duck here is pretty good. We also ordered a side of bok choy to go with our meal and it was a nice balance. I think this is a great place for the value as I know (PG) can be quite high in terms of cost. So, I'll definitely be back. read more

I was happy to try Duck Chang's after grabbing one of their takeout menus while running an errand at Super Pets a while back. There are several different duck preparations as befits the name. There's a big picture of Duck, the man, on the wall. They have a website: http://www.duckchangs.com/ . In 1975, they became the first restaurant in the US to serve Peking Duck, apparently. Sadly, the patriarch died about four years ago, but his son greeted us and took care of us and was a great host. We were kind of bummed that they have shark fin soup on the menu ($19.00), but I guess that shows you how traditional this place is. We didn't actually feel like duck. We had a delicious appetizer of pan fried dumplings which came with a really great sauce. This was actually appetizing...it reminded us of the excellent pierogies we'd had on New year's, it wasn't heavy and just made us hungrier for our entrees. We decided on these dumplings (they also have Cha dumplings, which have an asterisk indicating hot and spicy) over several other interesting appetizers, including Chinese pork roast, flaming plate for 2, and fried duck livers. I got beef with chili peppers, which also has tons of stir fried onion. I like tons of stir fried onion. It says HOT (all caps) in the description on the menu, and it means it. You would be insane to order it and ask them to kick up the heat on it...it is plenty hot the way it comes out. I like HOT. I got serious head sweats and then felt some endorphins respond to my body saying "mouth on fire," but I loved the half I ate there and later the half I took home (with excellent, lightly fried rice). My girlfriend got the tastier, less incendiary but still nice and spicy crispy yum yum pork. The name says it all. Crispy, sweet, savory, spicy...and outrageously yum yum. Don't feel like yum yum? You could always try it bang bang. or sha cha or shi jil...or even Mongolian style. This is a serious menu, and I can't wait to try some other dishes. Huge props on the basis of just one visit, but I get the feeling Peter Chang makes sure his place is consistent and reliably excellent. read more

If you want cheaper and more convenient peking duck that pretty much tastes just as good as PGI, then this is the place. I read in the other reviews people whining about how the duck is not carved right in front of you but rather served right on a platter for you instead. So what? At least it's still good. Duck Chang's only has spring onions and doesn't have cucumbers, but it's still good. I also felt like you got more duck than PGI for a much cheaper price (whole duck that is). As for the other entrees we ordered, they were actually enjoyable. I'm tired of Chinese food and having the same things taste the same. But here, the flavor is on point. We ordered bang bang scallops and filet fish in hot/spicy sauce. I actually was a big fan of the filet fish in hot/spicy sauce. It definitely had a kick and the fish filet itself didn't disappoint. The service was quite fast and very friendly. As for the interior, people are right, maybe Duck Chang's does need to remodel a bit. Seems a little cramped but I still didn't mind. I'd return here. Now don't take those words lightly, because I don't like returning to any Chinese restaurants. read more

Duck! Duck! Duck! My parent's use to bring the family here back in the 80's. For a family of four, we would always order wonton soup, fried rice and TWO Peking ducks. That's how exceptional the duck was and still is. Eating the duck last night brought back good memories. The duck meat was so tender and the skin was so crispy. Add the hoisin sauce, wrapper, and spring onions, you now have Peking duck perfection. There was not one table that did not order the duck. Besides the quality of the duck, Duck Chang's give you the most meat and skin out of any duck place I have been to. If you ask, they will even give you all the remaining duck bones as take out to make duck soup at home. They do not cut the duck at your table, but they do it in the dining area. If you want to see the duck cut, ask for a table near the cutting station. If you still have issues with not having the duck cut at your table, then you should get some mental help. It's just a duck being cut up! The service was great as usual. Peter (Duck Chang Jr.) and his mom take the time to talk and get to know their patrons. It's a family atmosphere. The decor is dated. They have been there since 1975. It's a typical authentic Chinese restaurant. If you want better decor, less quality and more expensive food, go somewhere else. To me Duck Chang's is a historical landmark to Annandale. I wouldn't change a thing. Would you change the decor to George Washington's house? read more

The positives of this restaurant include that they actually do understand who do free, and they also are nice people. Do not order the docket. It is dry, chewy, and not worth it. When the owner came by to ask me what I thought of my meal, in a quiet voice told him exactly what I thought. His response was in Essence"What do you expect, you ordered Sichuan duck." Having had duck other places, I personally couldn't imagine why anybody would want dry Shuey flavorless duck. He did acknowledge that they don't sell a lot of it. I understand why. He asked me if there was anything else I would like to order, but it didn't seem like he was offering to replace it. He was basically looking to sell me something else. No discount offered on the bill, and I told him I wouldn't be back. $27 with tip, for one meal, and it was thoroughly dissatisfying. From the happiness of other people, I can assume that most of the restaurant is good food. The reason that he only got two stars is because of the attitude around food. If something doesn't sell twice, the. maybe it shouldn't be on the menu at all. read more

My Chinese restaurant of choice when I am in the DC area. Unfortunately I can only comment on one item on the menu as it is so amazingly good, I have never ordered anything else. Peking Duck. That's it. Peking Duck. There is no need to get a menu or question your selection. It is delicious and will not disappoint. The decor, not good. The place is barely above a hole in the wall. The wait staff is attentive enough, nothing to write home about, but ok. However, all of the aforementioned is forgiven because of... (I will give you one guess here). Amazing Peking duck and excellent service! We found Duck Chang's through the October 2020 article in the Washington Post and can only say that we wish we had known about this restaurant sooner! First of all and important for current times, the restaurant has excellent COVID precautions and a great set up, which helped us to feel very comfortable picking up our take out. We ordered a Peking duck (soooooooo good!), green beans (delicious!), vegetable tempura, and dumplings -- everything was outstanding. We drove all the way from Arlington to Duck Chang's and it was well worth it -- even when we got home with our food, the Peking duck skin was nice and crispy, and the vegetable tempura light and crunchy and so tasty. Best Peking Duck in Northern Virginia. Don't even try to mention PGI to me - talk to the hand. This place has been doing Peking Duck since before it was cool. PGI may carve the duck at your table, but it tastes worse than Duck Chang's and costs way more. "Wah wah but they don't carve it at your table" - seriously some of you Yelpers crack me up sometimes. Highly recommend the Volcano alcoholic beverage for two, as well as the sample platter. If you like hot wings that are actually hot, you will love Duck Chang's - I was actually struggling to finish them because of the heat, and that almost never happens to me! Dessert: their banana dessert where they caramelize the bananas or something in a fire at your table and then drop them into ice water - can't remember the name of it but it ROCKS!!!! read more

They don't deliver, even though the Yelp profile says they do. I was about to pass them over but then decided last minute to just order take out (I live less than 10 min away). Ordered General Tso's chicken and Mongolian beef, and I can say with full confidence that we will become regulars, my wife couldn't say more compliments about the flavor balance, and I just couldn't say anything, my mouth was full until my plate was clean. Decided to try this duck place after a friend of mine told me where it was. Upon entering the establishment you are warmly greeted by an elderly asian lady. The place has seen better days and is in need of a major renovation. As the name states their specialty is peking duck. We ordered a whole duck for $33 comes with the hoisin sauce, scallions and pancakes. Much to may dismay the duck wasn't carved out in front of us but instead was already served in a plate all sliced up. This takes away from the experience of eating the duck. A no no. The duck meat was dry but the skin was still crispy. My guess is its been precooked since morning and had been left in the warmer too long. The other dish came out very late and we were already full from the duck when the other dishes were served. No timing whatsoever.So we had to take it to go. A quick run to the bathroom gave me a preview of what the back side is like. Its kept intentionally dark to kept prying eyes from noticing the depraved condition its in. read more

Heard good things about this place since I'm tired of the attitude of Peking Gourmet Inn (didn't allow tank tops for men?? who do they think they are, some five-star restaurant?) and their long lineups. Warning: the menu is SO Chinese-American, like some take-out joint, nothing at all representative of the goodness of Annandale. Clientele was almost all Caucasian and seemed run-down or grungy almost like I was in central VA or Hampton Roads, rather than Fairfax County. The restaurant was too dark for the genre, in a way that seemed more useful to hide cosmetic flaws (decor is straight out of the 1970s which normally I don't mind but it was bugging me with the poor lighting) rather than to create an ambiance. Peking Duck - Skin is cripsy and meat is .. okay. The sauce definitely falls flat compared to Peking Gourmet Inn. Leaves so much to be desired! Stir fried ho fun with pork - boring, just boring. Felt like food court food. It tastes exactly like it sounds like, but reminds me of something a child would eat, or that you'd find at a house party that's trying to cater to guests who aren't Asian. We also were recommended some stir fry beef dish that the server told us was "her favorite" but it also tasted very food court-ish. I appreciate the friendly server trying to help us but she was definitely struggling when we asked for a menu item that wasn't Americanized - and she really had to think. Not her fault, it's the restaurant's. Overall the duck wasn't horrible but I'm never coming back here. Looks like Peking Gourmet Inn still wins for now - sorry Duck Chang's. read more

Excellent food and service! They were super friendly and helpful. My wife is gluten intolerant, and so we can't eat at most Chinese restaurants, unless she wants to get only plain steamed dishes. Their menu is labeled "GF" for the items that are gluten free, and they are able to make other dishes gluten free if you are only gluten intolerant and not celiac. (They were knowledgeable about the differences) We had the Szechuan Duck, Szechuan Eggplant, and Fried Rice. Delicious! We look forward to going back! read more
