The décor is borderline divey, pretty much what you'd expect from a Southern BBQ shop. The standards are all there and all good: hushpuppies, baked beans, pulled pork. I came here for breakfast with high hopes. I had been here many times before for breakfast, and never been disappointed. However, this time was different. I got the #1 breakfast meal. 2 eggs scrambled, bacon, hash browns and toast. I'm not sure exactly how they measured the 2 eggs, because they were powdered eggs. They were grainy. The hash browns were over cooked. The bread was stale before it was toasted. The bacon tasted like it was microwave bacon. And washed it all down with orange juice, even that was from frozen concentrate. Needless to say, the pancakes my girlfriend got seemed to be home made, however, she stated they seemed a little old. Good thing the bbq was good or this place really wouldn't have been worth it. My husband got the 1/2 smoked chicken and loved it. Flavorful, tender and moist. I got the fried grouper salad and it was good, but fairly run of the mill. It was a large salad with a lot of toppings. The dressing was good but extremely sweet. The best part of the salad was the grouper, but it was kind of a small portion. Sides: side salad was decent with lots of veggies, hushpuppies and fries were nothing special. Important tip first: outdoor seating is dog friendly :) My husband and I stopped in for breakfast- we made it to the restaurant at five to 11, and ordered our omelettes just under the wire. When they say they stop serving breakfast at 11, they mean it. The service was great- very friendly and REALLY fast. Our food came out almost immediately, and it was cooked to our preference (choose your own omelette- no opportunity for the cooks to just throw a pre-cooked meal into the microwave). Coffee left a little to be desired, but since they were nice about us ordering breakfast when we did, I don't really feel as though I can be too picky about something like that- besides, a little cream and sugar and brighten up just about any cup of coffee. My family has been coming to the Outer Banks for about 20 years, and I can't recall a time where we didn't swing into the Duck Deli. Most recently, I had the BBQ Sampler (Ribs, Wings, and Pulled Pork) and an additional order of 5 wings. It comes with two sides, I ordered the onion rings and potato salad, but can't really speak to how they were because I was stuffed. The wings are great....fall off the bone, with some hotness to them. It is the kind of hotness that sneaks up on you after you eat the wing. I like the dry rub on the ribs, and the vinegar taste of the pulled pork. Service was great....offered plenty of refills, checked on us 4 or 5 times, joked around with the family, and kept the three kids happy. We ate outside, so flies were a bit of an issue, but the waitress took our plates as we emptied them and sat them away from us to lure them away. Let me just start with I'm a local and love supporting small local businesses. With that being said I decided to try duck deli on a very busy Saturday afternoon. They told me 10 to 15 mins and knowing how Saturday duck traffic is I gave it 20 mins. When I got there my food was hot and ready for me to pick up. The prices are expensive but you're also on the beach so I can't really complain about the money. The food was also not worth the price I paid. After vacationing several times in Corolla, we were delighted to "discover" this overlooked gem we've driven by so many times. Based on other reviews, we called in our order on our first night of vacation to keep things easy -- we've resisted getting the outrageously overpriced pizza on the same strip on Route 12 and SO GLAD that we've held out. This place was a real downer! I got the chicken salad and it was tasteless and just dry. I asked to have them replaced with simple onion rings and they never came. My wife got a blt that looked like it was made on food lion thin sliced bread. The kind that you pick up and hold and the bacon wants to poke through. The kids shared the 5 piece chicken tenders with fries meal. We opted for the outside picnic table seating. Food was decent priced. We vacation in the Outer Banks several times a year and every visit, we make multiple trips to Duck Deli. Currently, we've been here for two days and have already eaten two meals at Duck Deli. My absolute favorite is the pulled chicken sandwich with a side of hushpuppies. The pulled chicken is authentic NC style BBQ and the huspuppies are borderline addictive. If you get a BBQ sandwich, don't be put off by getting the "small" option. Even at my hungriest, I find that is PLENTY of sandwich to satisfy my hunger. The small sandwich comes on a hamburger bun and the large comes on a Kaiser roll - which I find to be a little too much. The parking lot is tricky. It's basically a small dirt lot right off of Duck Road and it's usually pretty packed during peak dining hours. If you're staying in a nearby house or condo, it's easy to walk to bike. Hey, that way you can work off all those extra hushpuppies, right? The patio area is cute, but I don't recommend eating out there. Too many flies! The last time we ate on the patio, I felt like I spent most of the meal swatting flies off of my food. All in all, the food is very tasty, the service is lightening fast and the staff is friendly and personable. It is definitely worth checking out. read more
