We wanted some takeout to enjoy in our room after a long day at the beach and Duck Deli was nearby with decent reviews. First off, "Deli" is perhaps a tad misleading...sure you can choose from a handful of traditional deli sandwiches but this isn't a place with a stack of cold cuts and ready to prep items lining the wall in cases. And while you can grab a few 6 packs, water, cola, or pre-prepared desserts, it's not stocked full of quirky or convenient deli items. What this is, is a great takeout spot with a solid set of basic options. If you only order one thing, make sure you order at least 4 of the chicken wings. These aren't soggy, greasy, or subpar buffalo wings. These are huge wing portions (thighs included) that are slow-smoked and flavorful. Delicious down to the bone, perfect flavoring without being salty. Really, really good. The burgers are excellent too. I opted for the "Duck Buster Burger" which was maybe a bit bigger than I needed! I did eat it all though, so it is definitely worth the calories. Two big smoky patties with some BBQ sauce and pulled pork as well as an onion ring on top. I could have used some mustard, mayo, or cheese between the patties to kind of glue them together but that's a minor quibble. If I went back, I'd go simpler with a bacon (single patty) cheese burger but I'm glad I tried this one at least once. Grabbed a piece of chocolate cake and I was set. Prices are really reasonable across the board and the service is super friendly--they were having credit card machine issues (as was the rest of the road for an hour or so due to an accident) but worked with me to process it old school so I wouldn't miss out on my meal. They also directed me to a spot steps away for milkshakes as they didn't have any. read more

Been coming to the Outer Banks with our family and friends for quite some time and Duck Deli was always a fan favorite. I just wanted to take some time to write this to show management and the staff our gratitude for their establishment. My brother, friend, and I were heading out tonight and got some take out cheesesteaks from DD. Being from PA and eating at a variety of cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, Duck Deli had some high expectations to live up to. The meat was good, cheese was american (which is fine for me), and the bread was okay. It could be their bread supplier or maybe they didn't toast it the right amount. Anyway, I still really enjoyed it and was satisfied. The cheesesteaks are just a minor part of Duck Deli as many of their other options really exceed expectations. Super cute spot! Ordered the smoked tuna salad on a gluten free roll. Very few gluten free & pescatarian options which is okay and expected at a BBQ place. The wait staff was very knowledgeable about allergies and were able to tell me that the fries are covered in a batter with gluten and offered to put my sub on a gluten free roll. The roll was an extra $1.5 charge and worth it. Instead of fries they have ruffle chips as a side. Gluten free roll isn't on the menu but they have them! Outside dining area is very cute. read more

Stopped to grab a quick bite thinking the word deli would translate to fast, inexpensive, sandwiches. We were wrong. The prices were high and unexpected. The staff was nice and the food was decent. We had some trouble ordering but all the food came out as expected. We skipped the drinks to avoid paying $2.25 for a bottle of water. I know they are located on an island and pricing probably has a lot to do with the cost of getting supplies and rent/land costs, but the prices were high for us. I've never been and always wanted to try it, so I went tonight. Looks are deceiving I assumed that you can dine inside since it's cooler temperature, but not. So we placed our orders with a very nice young guy. I ordered a chef salad and my friend ordered clam chowder and chicken wings. The chef salad was served in a takeout container, with a packet of salad dressing, not what I expected for $17.99. It had 4 rolls, sliced deli meat and fresh sliced carrots, cucumber, black olives. Green peppers and red onion on top of mixed greens. It was hard to cut with the plastic utensils, needless to say I was extremely disappointed. My friend enjoyed the New England Clam Chowder and the Wings (they looked delicious). I think they should offer some inside seating even if just this time of year. For our first lunch in Duck and a Sunday at that, we were not looking for anything big. The possibilities are pretty limited around here. Duck Deli looked OK. It is a modest, homey place and had a reasonable crowd. Ms T asked about the fish of the day for the sandwiches, but when mahi was the response, she switched to a cheeseburger. I ordered a BBQ Sampler platter so we could have leftovers for dinner. She declared the cheeseburger to be good with a good grilled flavor. She would rate it better than the three stars I would give it. It was a pre-made patty and three stars is the max for that, but she was happy with it regardless. My barbecue sampler platter was a mixed success. It included three ribs, three whole wings and some pulled pork. My sides were slaw and baked beans. Wings - Grill (not smoky) flavor, good rub, a little spicy. Well done and moist. I really liked them, 4* Pulled Pork - flavorless except for stale taste, unsalted, unseasoned and dry, 1-1/2 * Ribs - Low on smoke, dry-ish spare ribs. Did not taste fresh, clearly were not smoked that day. 2* Slaw - Some onion, but limp and a day old. Dressing was tangy. Made from bagged slaw mix. 1-1/2 * Baked Beans - Maple flavored, probably Bush's, ok, but very commercial - 2* Hush Puppies - Did not eat, put to my mouth and could taste the excessive onion without biting in. 1* So here is another place where you have to find what they do well. Take the time to drive down to High Cotton for barbecued pork. Don't eat ribs in North Carolina if you have a choice. Try eating here on a day other than Sunday and hope that the slaw is fresher. Great place and not just a deli. We picked up our meals to go back to our rooms. Very friendly service and delicious food. Our kids had cheeseburgers and fries. We had the crab cake platter and the blackened mahi mahi taco plate. Sides were very good. The one thing I wish were an option were corn tortillas instead of flour. Two words - PULLED CHICKEN. It is amazing and I have sexy food dreams about it all year. You absolutely must try it if you're vacationing in OBX. Duck Deli is a staple down here, and we have always stopped in at least once on our annual vacation. Years ago we did try eating in the restaurant, and it was closer to the three star experience several are posting - especially in season, this place is always packed. So, we altered our strategy -- we call ahead an order (either as we are coming into town driving to our rental, or on our way out to take home with us - sometimes both!), pick it up, pick up some buns at Harris Teeter (or plan ahead and bring some high quality ones from home) and voila! Awesome easy first meal while getting the car unpacked at the rental. Following these steps, it's an easy 4-4.5 star experience. We always get a crap load of the pulled chicken and the smoked wings. These are the shining star standouts on the menu and reheat well for an entire week vacation. The pulled meats come per pound - and a pound makes about 3 good sized sandwiches. The chicken is delicious - perfectly smoked and sauced, you don't need to do anything but put it on a yummy bun. The wings are BIG, so if you go in for the dozen you might be surprised! Our recent visit was only a day trip, so we ordered pick up on the way home and then had three lovely days of delicious BBQ to let us feel like we were still on vacation. I should have taken pictures, but I couldn't be bothered. Had to get that pulled chicken in my belly! I have been coming to this establishment for 29 years, and I will continue to frequent this establishment until the end of time. The home fries are good *get them with the onions you wont regret it!* The omelets are large, come with toast and home fries so you will leave full. The staff are so friendly and helpful, it's a quaint indoor area. It seems like the locals like this place a lot, as well. Just a heads up, if you're not a morning person or don't like loud conversations around you in the morning this might not be the place for you.
