Duck Donuts are made fresh by order. It's not a big donut but it's so good and fresh that you should probably order half a dozen or a dozen to be satisfied. You can pick the flavors and the wife will create them on the spot. Because of this, the wait time could be 5-10 minutes if there is no one ahead of you. We stopped by this establishment today for a Sunday afternoon crave of doughnuts. We were NOT disappointed. These doughnuts were made to order Fresh & delicious. We ordered a customized dozen. The concept is neat. A vanilla cake doughnut cooked to perfection and a selection of toppings to customize it. It seems simple, but this doughnut is scrumptious. Normally a doughnut fresh out the oil tastes like a mound of fried, oily dough. That is not the case with this doughnut. It is a cake doughnut, but not too heavy. When the toppings are added when they are still hot, it is something to behold. Hands down these are the best doughnuts I've encountered in many years. My favorites thus far are cinnamon sugar and the simple glaze. I have a few more to try out of the dozen, so I am certain I will be adding more favorites to the list. I've been trying to taste more foods from the Alpharetta area that isn't a chain restaurant. Saw this this place on a google search and decided to check them out today. The donuts aren't laid out like in a bakery so I wasn't sure how I would know what to choose. I was advised that they make their donuts fresh and we pick the toppings/drizzle. They have pictures of some options to try but I decided to just get 1 simple donut. I wish I got more but I only needed that one ;)! I got the glaze with graham cracker bits. I'll definitely try blueberry next time as that is my favorite flavor. The donut I believe he said is a vanilla cake - I saw the automatic mixing bowl with the batter but I missed the donut making process. I have been to several Duck Donuts over the past year ever since falling in love with them in the Outer Banks. Needless to say I was super excited when this one opened up somewhat nearby. On Memorial Day we decided to go up there as my husband still had not tried them Fresh and hot. The person who took our order was amazing and patient while we created 12 different donuts. We then dragged my husband over to the place they make the donuts fresh to order. That is when I noticed the warming lamps and no fresh donuts, but rather donuts that had been sitting under warming lamps. In addition, there was a box with a plastic bag inside under a table filled with old donuts - GROSS! Sure enough, they did not make our donuts fresh, our donuts were taken from the trays under the warming lamps. I was a bit upset but still hopeful. Then our box went over to be topped. It was very slow and very inefficient. There were 5 people topping donuts and not a one seemed to know what they were doing. When our order was done, we went outside to eat some while they were fresh. Opened the box, clearly they were not hot. Picked one up, they were not even warm. The toppings were not well done, very inconsistent coverage. The whole point of Duck Donuts is hot made to order donuts. Not topped to order. My husband definitely was unimpressed. Liked the variety of toppings, but didn't quite get the excitement of fresh donuts obviously when they weren't always fresh. I'm hoping this is because they just opened a couple of weeks ago and they are still figuring things out. Wifey had a donut with blueberry coating and powdered sugar...and she liked it pretty well. She also has a chocolate and rainbow sprinkles to try...but she will like it.
