Only complaint I would have about this place is you have to wait quite a bit of time for donuts. You understand why the moment you put one in your mouth. You fill out a page for made to order donuts like you do at a made to order taco place. Then you wait and watch as you see them mix the donut batter. Make the donuts. Then they line up the donuts with orders for each batch. You pick the sauce, topping and finishing drizzle for each donut. Most donuts you get at a store are firm. These were so fresh when we got them home. You pick up a donut and it is so tender and fresh that it bends in your hand. None of the toppings have had time to set yet either and it makes for a donut eating experience like no other. We waited maybe 5 minutes to place our order. While on vacation in Corolla, the word on the street was that this place was a must stop. And so we did. There were 9 of us and since we couldn't decide on what flavors, we got all of them. We ordered the duck dozen and the summer assortment (also a dozen). We were in around 2pm on a weekday and it wasn't busy. It's a good thing because the guy behind the counter now had to make 24 donuts as we watched him fry and then glaze/decorate each donut from behind the glass partition. Why the 4 out of 5 stars? While eating warm and fresh donuts is awesome not all toppings can withstand the heat. The powdered sugar instantly got absorbed by the dount grease and the glaze melted off that donut. I've always been a fan of Duck Donuts. We were on vacation in Corolla, and I stopped in as soon as they opened on Sunday morning to grab 18 donuts for my sister's baby shower. We stood in line for about 30 minutes, some of the time in the heat. Once we got inside, we took an order form and started customizing our order. Unlike the rest of my family, I don't like these right out of the fryer, I prefer to wait 4 hours or so until they cool and start forming back up. The first time we had duck donuts was at North Carolina at Corolla about 10 years ago. There was always a long line That wind it outside sometimes and around the corner. Perhaps it was because the donuts are made fresh after you order them. However, they offer no yeast donuts. All donuts are cake. That would be OK, but my only issue is that the donuts are greasy. And unlike other cake like donuts these collapse after a few hours. Also, they are SO SUGARY. They put a TON of icing AND candy on top of every single type. The only exception is the cinnamon sugar, but even then it is saturated with fat & grease. I guess the only positive thing about these donuts is that they are made fresh for you and they are served warm. But other than that, I prefer other donuts. I won't be going back. And, I love donuts. At this point, Duck Donuts has spread all over the States, but the hail from OBX and at some point Corolla was one of the few locations. I'm not 100% a donut person, but duck donuts are vegetarian (not vegan, they make them with eggs) and are made to order so they come out fresh and hot. Pick a coating (like chocolate or strawberry), a topping (like shredded coconut), and finish with a drizzle (like hot fudge or raspberry). You can also be like me and basically have it bare, maybe add some delicious shredded coconut. I've had the coffee before at this location and it did the job. Guess it doesn't make sense to have so many Duck Donuts open during the winter months, so this one gets temporarily closed down. Saw this place a few days ago and knew I had to try it. The place is so cute with duck feet stickers on the floor and merchandise in the corner--I won't lie I really wanted one of their shirts. They even had duck masks for kids. You can order their signature doughnuts or design your own and we decided to design ours. The lady at the register was so sweet and patient as I rattled off our dozen doughnuts and then drinks. The drinks were ready pretty quickly. We got a hot chocolate, a caramel macchiato, an iced latte, and a white chocolate mocha. The hot chocolate was good, nothing special, but that's not what we came for. Although, the rest of my family loved their coffees. The wait for the doughnuts was a little long, but it was the first day they reopened and it was rather crowded. You could watch them make the doughnuts, which I liked and thought was cute. The doughnuts themselves were absolutely scrumptious. They were still warm, soft and had those delicious toppings on them. Freshly made cake donuts! The cake was light, moist and fluffy - not dense as some cake donuts tend to be. The flavor of the cake was just right - not overly sweet or greasy. So why only three starts? My opinion, they fell short with toppings. They offer maple, vanilla, chocolate, peanut butter, lemon and strawberry glaze along with varied topping such as bacon, chocolate sprinkles, nuts and coconut. We tried several varieties over the course of two days. The maple glaze with peanuts was by far my favorite - not overly sweet and nice maple flavoring. I did not care for the peanut butter glaze. Although peanut butter is one of my favorite toppings, this glaze did not have that peanut flavor and was overly sweet. The bacon topping was reminiscent of bacon bits. The coconut was very sweet as well. Overall I think if I would have stuck with a simpler preparation - bare or just powdered or cinnamon sugar I would have been much happier. Donuts are moist and super dense. Seems like something there for everyone. My fave in general is a blueberry, this one is blueberry cake with a blueberry glaze, and super sugary. 3.5 stars. You have to try Duck Donuts at least once if you are visiting OBX. I'll admit, I generally prefer bagels over doughnuts, but I'm glad I tried Duck Donuts during a recent visit. Slightly smaller than a Dunkin Donut, Duck Donuts' cake doughnuts are lighter in texture than the usual cake doughnuts, and are served warm. But they have few topping options and NO filled doughnuts. I am partial to their cinnamon sugar doughnut, and I agree with another reviewer that they taste just like a churro. The chocolate covered doughnuts are very sweet, and honestly, I didn't think the chocolate frosting was of the highest quality. (Think Hershey's.) I hear they are opening a location in Charlotte next to my favorite Italian restaurant, Dolce. I'll probably return, if only for another "churro" doughnut. read more
