This place is magnificent! Not your typical crispy creme style donut but its such a soft cakey texture. Its so cheap and the fact that you can choose all of your toppings. Last time I came in I was super tired and I never know what I want. The lady at the front was nice but as I ordered the first topping she said " no other toppings?" , when I clearly have stated I wasnt totally sure what I wanted when I was going to build my own. But its no biggie she was nice. She just didnt give me a chance to go down all 3 options so I felt a bit rushed. Fresh, delicious, and fast. We did arrive in the early afternoon, so I'm sure it would be busier in the morning. They are delicious cake donuts with whichever toppings/combos you like (make your own or choose one of the "favorites"). After all I have heard about Duck Donuts, I thought I would finally give them a try. Horrible service and even worse donuts! There are plenty of far better donut joints in the area who'd actually be happy to have the customers. I would highly recommend driving out Monuts or Baker's Dozen. But really, even Krispy Kreme and Dunkin are better (and cheaper) than this place. Friday February 19th I visited the Duck Donuts in Durham, Donuts were amazing & I received great customer service but I'm pretty sure the young lady I think her name was Jallisea she had an attitude and did not put my donuts in the proper box and instead shoved them in a white bag when normally they come in a box. She also threw some donuts at another one of her co workers in a disrespectful manner at the topping station and I could tell the other young lad did not appreciate it but stayed professional. Clealy I'm the manority here because I don't understand the hype of Duck. I'm a fan of the cake style donuts at Dunkin and the yeast at Krispy Kreme equally. Duck is also cake but they only serve vanilla with a variety of icings and toppings. I'm impressed that they are made to order but I just wasn't wowed with the end product. Don't bother! The cashiers don't seem to understand what they are selling and no one there is helpful at all! This place needs a lot of help in the customer service area. Donuts made fresh to order (and a viewing area to see the neat process of the machines making your order) then topped with the most delicious toppings that a) are generous and thick and drool-inspiring and b) actually taste like what they describe. Meh... had my first Duck Donuts today and while the actual donuts were great, three of the six donuts were the incorrect flavors.... two were Coconut Island Bliss (and I can't stand coconut) instead of the Chocolate Caramel Crunch and I'm not sure what the other one was but it wasn't the S'mores one I was drooling for. I had a feeling these wouldn't be my cup of tea. It's not that they taste bad or have bad service. It's just they only have the fake style donut. And they serve them hot... I'm used to the classic style and they are just room temp. I think if you're going to claim to specialize in donuts then you should have a variety. The long maple ones, a cinnamon twist, a classic glazed, donut holes, cake style etc. I got glazed and the glaze had a powdered sugar flavor... not like a traditional donut glaze taste. And it was so hot that almost all the glaze slid to the bottom of the donut box. I'm not a fan of the kitsch interior either. But all that is just me. Decent donuts as long as they're still warm. The coffee tasted fresh. Sadly the donuts get pretty dry and stale a short time after cooling down. Inside the store was moderately clean (except for nasty rags sitting on the food prep surfaces) and the teenagers taking my order were properly masked and nice enough (when they weren't sitting around talking and vaping). A much different vibe from my visit there back around the Holidays. I will say that the manager on duty Gwen (although she was friendly enough), might want be a little more careful when talking about selling pot and adderall to people on the job, but to each their own. Overall, a mediocre experience but nothing like my pervious visits here and a huge downgrade from the location in Greensboro. I'll give them another try the next time I'm back in the area, and I hope management can get things running smoothly here again! read more

Even though they donut have yeast options, I still think these treats are delicious AD(as Duck!) I love being able to customize my donuts, and the fact that they're made to order is icing on the cake...er, donut! I shamelessly adore Krispy Kreme, but the fact that you have to wait for the pesky hot sign to be flashing to receive a warm donut isn't ideal. Duck Donuts provides the best situation because the friendly employee out front shouts out how many donuts you ordered, so the workers in the back can cover them with your toppings of choice. My one issue with this particular location is the donuts were not as hot as I prefer, but that may be due to my obsession with getting the most Insta-worthy picture, so ignore me (but follow me on insta @gradschoolfoodie). I also am a huge jelly donut lover, and the closest I can get to a jelly was a raspberry glaze. The options are extensive, though, so along with the various menu options, you can create the donut of your dreams (with the cake base donut and available options). I have been to the original Duck Donjrs, and I appreciate that we have a location in Durham that's less crowded. Overall, I'm impressed, but I still wish they had yeast and jelly options. read more

The donuts are ok but service was dismal. Pre-ordered online so all I'd have to do is pick it up at the counter. I showed up on time, went to the pick-up counter as instructed (no one in front of me), and proceded to stand there for 15mins while an employee continuously walked past me doing their damnedest to not look me in the eye, smile, or even let me know someone would be with me soon. The only reason I got my order was because another employee finally showed up and asked if someone was helping me. They custom make them hot off the fryer but I guess the cashier didn't listen. I had the cinnamon donut (that was supposed to have a salted caramel drizzle) and it was pretty mediocre. My husband and I were both very disappointed as the donuts were so hot that all the icing ran off the donuts and was on the bottom of the box. I have pasted my google review here: Occurrence - March 21, 2019. About 6:50 pm. Larger older guy taking the order was boarderline hostile, and was very rude the entire time. Younger guy in the moaned, groaned, and loudly complained while making my order to the extent that I felt the need to leave a car to my car. I spent about 5 minutes at my car because being inside with them was so uncomfortable. Just left about an hour ago and the doughnuts are ok. That isn't were my issue lies. My issue lies with the staff. I had been shopping around the area and noticed the doughnut shop and decided to try it. Everything was fine until the (supposed) manager began to take my order. He had a serious attitude, scoffed, and made faces as I ordered. Then, when I stated I wanted a dozen, he called out "a dozen"and the guy in back moaned, groaned and began to loudly and audibly and verbally complain about having to make the order; I could hear it all from the front. Both guys were completely rude. At this point, I was essentially ready to cancel my order. As I waited for my order went to grab something from my car, when I tried to re-enter the door was locked, which is when I realized that I had shown up about 10-15 before closing (which is still NO EXCUSE for such poor customer service). When the managed open the door, I told him "thank you" ... TWICE, both times I was ignored and met with a look of indignation. The woman on staff was the only person that treated me with any kind of respect or kindness. To say the least, my first impression was a bad one, hostile even. The manager/guy taking the order needs to be replaced, his customer service was down right aggressive, condescending, and rude. Will never go there again.
