I was pleasantly surprised by the Peking duck and pork soup dumplings. I ordered the half Peking duck. It was sliced the perfect thickness for me. Not too thin that you feel like you need more and not too thick that it's too heavy. The meat was cooked well and tender with a crispy skin. They gave a good amount of wrappers and provided 2 types of sauce to go with the Peking duck wraps. I was sad they don't have crab and soup dumplings but the pork ones were good too. While pork is not as flavorful, each soup dumpling had a generous amount of soup along with a thin skin which is hard to make. It was paired with a light vinegar. The lychee martini hit the spot and wasn't too sweet or syrupy. The hot tea was soothing and came in a pretty glass pot. Appetizers: we got the pork and chicken soup dumplings. Both were delicious but I would say there was slightly more flavor in the chicken itself. Entree: I the duck friend rice which seemed to be something of a staple here and was decent. I love stumbling upon a great random find! We were visiting Bayou Bend Gardens and got hungry, so we turned to Yelp and found this spot nearby with great reviews and it did not disappoint. I've only eaten from here once and it was a delivery order but my family thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered. The hot oil wontons and pork truffle soup dumplings were my favorites. Some of the best dumplings I've had! The sauce for the hot oil wontons was soo good, it was rich and spicy with that hint of sechuan kick. The soup dumplings I thought came out perfectly, especially for a delivery order, with a good amount of soup and great flavor. My next favorites were the beef stir fried rice noodles and the green beans, big portion sizes too that lasted for a few meals. My dining experience at Duck N Bao was pretty mediocre overall. Considering how many amazing Asian restaurants there are in Houston and Bellaire, I would not return to Duck N Bao knowing what I know now. First, we had to wait over 40 minutes for a table - granted it was Lunar New Year, so maybe wait times for a weekday evening were a little longer than usual. Once we were seated, it took our server another 10 minutes to come take our drink order. The ambiance was nice. Trendy Asian decor, what you might expect to see at any number of Chinese food chains. The restaurant was kept very clean. Our server was friendly, especially considering how busy it was, but it did rub me the wrong way when he asked me if I knew how to eat my entree and I said, "Yes, I do!" But, he then proceeded to instruct me step-by -step on how to eat my food despite my answer. I am sure he was just being nice, but then why ask? He also made a comment about how much I was eating, which I didn't love. I ordered the cucumber salad as a starter and the Peking duck as my main dish. The cucumber salad was nothing special - definitely didn't make my top three in Houston (I order cucumber salad literally anytime it is on the menu). Similarly, the Peking duck was just okay. It was a little dry and not super flavorful. I did love the plum sauce it was served with and the pancakes were very good. The serving size was very generous, so I was able to share with my table mates and take a bunch to go! Duck N Bao does not hold a candle to Wingkee when it comes to duck. The service was great. Our server was very attentive and got our orders right. The restaurant itself is really nice. Much nicer than I expected since it's in a strip mall. The Beef Lo Mein was really tasty. The beef itself was really tender (not chewy like a lot of others I've tried). The General Tso chicken was also tasty and both the Lo Mein and General Tso's portions were big. The only issues we had were that the they brought out the Lo Mein fairly quickly and had to wait about 10 minutes+ for other dishes to come out. The General Tso chicken came with a small bowl of rice (basically one cup of rice) which confused me since the portion of chicken would require more rice. The other was the price of the $9 sakes. The menu stated it was $9 but they charged $10. We didn't notice this until after we had paid and didn't bring it to their attention. Overall the food/service/atmosphere was great. Like the name suggests, the duck here is the thing to go for! I'm usually skeptical because most places have more fat than meat but this place magically melted the fat, kept the skin super crispy and there was so much meat! They do the thin pancake crepes here rather than bao bun so you definitely don't get as full. The noodles and wontons were very flavorful and the right amount of spice Would've skipped on the xiao long baos - they were just okay. Nothing special but held lots of soup! We got the brussel sprouts and green beans for balance. The sauce on the sprouts are good but it gets so salty towards the bottom. The green beans needed more of salt and to be a little less cooked. Service here was good too! Our server was training someone else but she checked on us and was very attentive, getting more water, offering clean plates, etc. More than the bare minimum for sure. We had eaten Peking duck in Washington DC once before and it was a memorable experience. We were seated in a cozy booth by the window as we perused the menu. We ordered a full Peking duck which came with the sliced duck meat, thin pancakes, scallions, cucumbers, and sauces to make make wraps. Additionally, it can with a duck noodle soup for the appetizer. We also tried the wagyu Bao buns (not pictured because they were so good we ate them immediately) and some shrimp lo mein! Everything arrived quickly! It all tasted juicy and flavorful! We came for Lunar New Year dinner, and since they do not take reservations, there was a wait as expected. While they initially told our party of 7 it was a 40 minute wait, we were in after only about half an hour (and it was well worth the wait!). This is my second time here, and the food and service are both very high quality. We were seated at a corner round table separated by a wall, almost creating an illusion of a private room. The interior design is lovely with tasteful wall decor and furnishings. For the food: The soup in the soup dumplings was delicious, although these are certainly a challenge to handle and maneuver! Eggplant in garlic sauce is always one of my favorite dishes, and they make it very well. The rice noodles with beef were a hit with our family too. The duck came with small round, flat pancakes to wrap everything in, and was just enough for the seven of us. The soup was nicely done, and just right on the seasonings, with some added veggies and glass noodles. The pork belly in the buns are an amazing combo and a must try! All in all - go try Duck N Bao! Houston has some hidden gems for dining, and Duck N Bao simply adds to the hype. I've seen these guys a few times on social media and have bookmarked it on Yelp to try when I finally made my rounds in H-town. Well, my assessment is that this spot is worth the visit. This is what I ordered to taste test -- * Crab Meat and Pork Soup Dumplings ($12.95) * half Peking Duck which includes 6 pancakes, duck hoisin sauce, cucumber slices and scallion slices ($32.00) The soup dumplings were amazing. I read that the soup dumplings are handmade in house and I could tell because of its intricacies -- every bite was perfect. And, the ginger dipping sauce sealed the deal for me. Moving over to the Peking Duck, it was surprisingly very well seasoned. I'm from the Bay Area in California so I know what type of potential that particular traditional Chinese dish has. The chefs at Duck N Bao are certainly creating a name for the restaurant and I love it. Supporting small businesses is my motive but it gets even better when the product or service is worth bragging about. My server Carolina was sweet but ran around the restaurant with a sense of urgency as it was busy, and I appreciate that type of hustle. All in all, the experience was worth satisfying my curiosity. Tucked into the corner of an unassuming strip mall is a small, sleek restaurant that puts you right in the mood for some yummy Chinese food. The lighting is low and the decor is black and gold. It's a nice spot. Sometimes, the evenings and weekends get a bit busy. Once or twice, we did have to wait a bit to get a table, one of those times we left and found a different spot to eat because of it. But on a Tuesday night, we were one of 4 tables, which made it perfect for us to just walk in without issue. The service is always nice and swift when you do get a table. We have enjoyed many of the dishes here, but of course the star is the Peking duck. We split a 1/2 duck with an appetizer of Dan Dan noodles. Both were very yummy. The skin on this duck was so crispy, light, and flavorful - it was perfect. The sugar dusted on top made it even better.
