Duckie's is a tradition for any visit to Cayucos. Situated right by the pier it is easy to stop at before or after visiting the beach. Their clam chowder (Boston) is one of the best. ( I am not a Manhattan chowder fan but I hear it is good also.) Love their fish and chips but the portions are huge so I order the kid portion which is basically two pieces of fish rather than 3. Their onion rings are also good. When I have strayed from these favorites for the salads or the fish tacos I have been very disappointed so I stay with the tried and true. It is order and they bring it to your table. Friendly staff. It can get really crowded so you might be hard pressed to find table or bar stool/counter seating but it will be worth the wait. They have a sister restaurant , Merseas,, on the pier at Avila Beach. The menu is a bit varied as they have bowls with rice and fish and veggies which I love and wish Duckie's had. Maybe someday. This was one of my best nights visiting here in Cayucos, CA. I tried to locate Duckies the night before using Google but couldn't find it while driving, so I ended up going to my other favorite place down the street called The Sea Shanty. This morning as we were on our morning walk we found Duckies by the pier. So tonight I went ahead and ordered Fish Tacos, Fish Bowl and you have the option of grilled or Blackened Sauteed (I definitely suggest Blackened) and side of shrimp. Sine I had my dogs we ordered for pickup. The Fish tacos were out of this world, I can't even describe this fabulous taste, my god we were in heaven! Most other places I've eaten fish tacos are always blah, but I kept reading the good reviews so had to try them out. The Fish bowl, well as my suggestion says, try Blackened but make sure you squeeze the lemon and tartar for each bite, it was excellent! The shrimp was okay, and I prefer the cocktail sauce here at Duckies then the Shanty just because it had less of a kick. Customer service was great, remember I was just there for a pickup. Hands down best fish and chips and Clam Chowder around. Lightly breaded to perfection. Not to mention they have damn good fried shrimp, chicken strips and French fries! During our Central Coast weekend to celebrate Dear Hubby's birthday, we started the festivities with a light meal here at Duckie's. Thanks to Yelpers for highlighting the fast casual restaurant. Free parking was at hand close by, with a bonus view of the pier. Upon entering, I noticed the decor, which includes a large mural on one wall. Tile work lines a walkway separating two halves of the dining area, bringing in color and texture. All in all, a pleasant atmosphere to set off the food. Earnest young people are on hand to take orders, and bring the food out to the guests. Though I was in a chowder house, I had a mad craving for a cheeseburger. We ended up ordering a bowl of New England clam chowder, a cheeseburger, and a side of garlic fries with parmesan. We took our number and found a high top table. When the food arrived, it was a hit. The chowder was the right amount of creamy thickness, with a good amount of clams, and enough potatoes for toothsome support of the clams. The half pound burger was actually two quarter pound patties, sandwiched around the typical burger toppings, like red onion and tomato. I was glad that I went after my burger craving; it was delish. The "side" of fries was a shocker. A huge portion of them arrived in a bowl. Could easily be a side dish for four people! Quite a value. I wish they were warmer, though. That took away from being a true hit. Also, I found the amount of parmesan excessive, drowning out the potatoes' flavor. The restaurant had a young staff, possibly teens in their first jobs. The shyness in dealing with customers showed. Charming innocence. Give Duckie's a try when near the pier in Cayucos! Your wallet and your tastebuds will thank you. read more

We went here because a local magazine recommended the chowder and my husband and I love New England clam chowder. It was OK. The clams were pretty small and few and far between. Doctored up with hot sauce and oyster crackers made it a B. I had the Caesar salad with grilled shrimp. I thought it was OK. But my daughter loved the shrimp. My husband had the crab sandwich with Avocado and cheese and thought it was great! I didn't try it. Kids shared chicken fingers and French fries and liked them. Best fish and chips in the area and a pretty location right at the foot of the Cayucos pier. A little pricey, though, but definitely worth the splurge if you want a good dinner in a fun atmosphere. Back on the Coast again going up to Elephant Seal Beach for the winter caving season, stoped into my all time favorite seafood place, Duckie's and believe me it did not disappoint!! Absolutely the best value for the highest quality seafood, my all time favorite is the Grilled Fish Bowl, fresh grilled fish, perfectly cooked vegetables and wonderful rice, the Clam Chowder is outstanding too!! I have eaten here at least 10 times and it's always great, sometimes I come back two days in a row it's that good, don't miss this place!!! read more

Sadly our last visit was nothing to rave about (8/15/20). With online schooling it seems Cayucos is continuing to see huge crowds, but even on normal busy summer weekends we havent had issues with food for the most part. But the food from this visit was so disgusting, it wasn't even worth fighting crowds to have it fixed. My daughter & I ordered a kids fish & chips, clam chower & fish tacos. What we got were completely dried out fish that we couldn't even eat it was so dried and over fried. I got the tacos and asked for the tortillas to be separate because we were taking it home. My taco toppings were soaked in juice?.... water?.... sauce? Probably all three, but the fish was so soaked in this mixture it had become almost mushy, when I tried to lift a piece on the tortilla it would just fall apart. It had no favor because these "watery sauce" was just that... To pay for food, & then wait over 30 minutes for our order & receive this, is beyond ridiculous. No matter how busy you are!!! My parents have a beach house here and have been coming here since I was a child. Duckies had been a family favorite but sadly the past year, they have become less concerned with food output. My parents already don't go here anymore because of this reason and now we will also not be going. There are other restaurants in Cayucos who we can support. read more

We got the clam chowder, the fish and chips, Nancy's House salad, and grilled cheese (for the kiddos). Everything was good. The fish from the fish and chips was thick chunks with minimal fry-it was juicy and delicious. I usually like malt vinegar on my fish and chips, but Duckie's tartar sauce was amazing! Extra pickles and dill spice. Sounds not that good, right? But it was fantastic!! Highly recommend. I could have the fish with tartar all day. Grilled cheese had multiple cheeses on sourdough. Made for an adult's pallet. I'm not a clam chowder fan, but this one was very tasty. Garlic vinaigrette dressing on Nancy's salad was unlike any dressing I've had before. We have eaten at this restaurant before so we thought it was a safe bet for some takeout. To say we were there on an "off night" is an understatement. We ordered the shrimp tacos, fish tacos, and onion rings. OMG! It was horrible. The shrimp and fish in the tacos were rubbery and difficult to chew. I felt like it might be a recipe for food poisoning so I tried to feed it to the dogs-- even they spit it out. After many years of coming to Cayucos and eating here, it's gone downhill. The service is always great, but the clam chowder was BLAND not even hot sauce could fix it, the fish and chips had tough skin all over them (never had that before) , they left a very smelly fish scent in the air and on our hands, and the "chips" were so stale the second they stopped being hot they were hard as rocks. Sadly, unless we hear that this disaster of food changes, we won't be back. This is wildly disappointing considering every time we are in town, we make sure one of our meals is from Duckie's. The food here is great. We had a few different items in the picture and all were fantastic. My go to is usually the special of the day, or the Cesar salad.... Yum! They have a few beers on tap which is so cool, and a great view. It's always a nice time, since there service is excellent. Jerry and Nolan make a great team, so attentive to all the customers, even on a busy night like tonight. Tables get cleaned fast, and food comes out quickly. It's a "Chowder House" so one would think, "This place must have AMAZING chowder"! Right? No. I down-right wasted my oyster crackers throwing them into a bowl of clam-less, bland béchamel with huge pieces of cracked pepper. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT. So on to the good? The establishment itself is clean & it's at a great location-right before the pier. There is parking everywhere & seating outside. The staff is friendly, you order at the counter & are given a number. When your order is ready, staff brings it out. And I do have to say the service was prompt & there was a consistent flow of traffic while we were there. So maybe it was an off batch.
