This cafe has a great ambiance and good food. I am not giving them a perfect rating for 2 reasons. Reason 1-- The people at the front will not ask you for your preferred name after you make an order. The cook will simply yell--loudly and repeatedly--whatever name appears on your credit card. This is obnoxious for people like me who do not go by our "government name." I have spoken to the manager, in a very friendly way, about this issue several weeks ago and despite his promise to look into it, nothing has changed. Reason 2--I am happy that the cafe pays homage to powerful black and brown women by naming all their rice bowl menu items after these women--including Michelle Obama, Malala Yousafzai and Angela Davis. Each of these women has a blurb listing their accomplishments. I am bothered that seven months after the election, Ayanna Presley's blurb has not been updated and she is still listed as a "councilwoman." It would be trivial for this flourishing for-profit cafe to update its menu board to properly reflect the status of this inspirational Black woman, whose name it uses to sell items, but they have not bothered to do this--even after I brought it up to them. This is either laziness or disrespect---and neither is a good look for a business. If these two problems are fixed, I would be happy to rate this as a 5-star cafe. read more

I want to like this place SO bad. It's right around the corner from my apartment and it's the only decent coffee/lunch spot in the area. It's like a bad relationship though-- I keep going back expecting it to be different and I'm always disappointed to find it's the same old bad stuff. The experience starts off okay when you walk in the door. It's a beautiful space full of bright sunny spots to work and lots of windows...but that's about where it ends. The coffee is fine. Nothing to write home about but I'm also not one to complain too much about coffee. Stay away from the food. It's not fresh. I've tried quite a few things from their menu: the breakfast sandwiches, quesadilla, rice bowls...all bad. Not just meh-- actually bad. I thought I could be saved with the bakery items and got a spinach cheese croissant that I asked to have warmed up and they couldn't even do that. When I got my croissant back it was cold in the middle. How hard is it to throw something in the microwave? They seem to do that pretty well with the rest of their food. I truly don't understand how this place is still in operation with the garbage they're passing off as edibles. I'm pretty high on this place early on. As a Fort Hill resident I'm happy to have another option I can walk to. I've stopped by three times for coffee but haven't tried any food. The staff is great. The vibe is more Brooklyn than Boston but it's a really comfortable room and they had good music playing. I wish this place was open when I was in school as its where I would have gone to get work done. I judge an iced coffee by whether I can drink it black or if I need to add milk. Cute local cafe. I came in this morning and got a sesame bagel with avocado and a matcha green tea mint latte. The bagel was good, but the latte tasted less like a latte and more like a cup of milk. Needless to say I don't dumped it after a few sips. Overall nice cafe though. read more

In between meetings I needed lunch, wi-fi and a tabletop. Dudley Cafe was the perfect solution. Michelle's Bowl (chicken curry dish) was delicious and the staff couldn't be nicer, faster, friendlier. Easy free wi-fi and generous workspace with no guilt even at the height of the lunch hour (not a very busy day here, no fight for space). There was even easy, free street parking. I've gotten into the habit of bringing my own mugs & take out containers with me since I've moved here as sustainability & the environment don't appear to be a concern in Boston. I brought my own coffee mug here & they charged me for a large coffee even though my mug is a bit smaller than their large coffee. Way to be greedy & discourage efforts at lowering your global footprint. No other coffee shop I've been to so far has done this except here. Not to mention I'm saving them money on take out cups. I was curious about the impact of having a place like this open right down the block from Haley House Bakery + Cafe, but both seem to be packed most of the time. So this place is, without a doubt, cute as can be with it's lounge area and sprawling windows-a fine place to grab a cup of Joe however I ordered the curry chicken rice bowl and was sorely disappointed. There was not a spice or single seasoning to be found in the meal. It was just very, very bland which I understand to be a common complaint for this place. I also agree with the writer who noted the racial divide. This is not a location concerned with connecting with folks indigenous to the neighborhood which is rather unfortunate. I stumbled upon your beautiful looking Dudley cafe on April 23rd, 2016 and once in, I was greeted by a man and he asked what could he get for me. After explaining to him that I have been driving for 4 hours from out of town, I was in dire need of the strongest coffee and the one that he suggested was the one I purchased. So I stepped to the "pick up" area that was pretty close to the register to wait for my iced coffee and being that I was the only one waiting, he got started with my order SO I THOUGHT. I'm watching him go back and forth to different counters and during that time, we made eye contact about 3 times (I'm giving him the look like "hey, is the coffee almost done?" So finally he looks at me again and out right ask me "uhmm can I help you with something?" I was in complete shock, my mouth dropped in disbelief and stated "Are you kidding me?" and he responded "No, I'm actually not". I was the only person waiting for something and he so called "forgot" that fast about my iced coffee. With a smirk on his face, he asked if I wanted a pastry but I expressed to him that "all i wanted was my ICED COFFEE". I never ever ever experienced such horrible and disgusting service in my entire life. So of course it took him less than a minute to throw ice in a cup and pour coffee in it. Oi vey. I really wanted to love it here. I've been resisting, for almost ten days, and waited until the hype died down to check it out. Regardless of the vegetarian options, this place is not a vegetarian's dream come true. I ordered a breakfast sandwich (which indicated adding mean on was extra) and I picked up the "cucumber roll" sushi from the little self serve fridge thing -- um, my sandwich had meat in it and I ended up giving it to my coworker, and my sushi was DRY. Went to their Jazz Brunch last Sunday with a good friend and had a nice Sunday summer brunch accompanied by some pretty decent music from an odd looking musical duo. I really liked the bento box style brunch meal with the tasty double cheese quiche, thick french toast and well done healthy strips of bacon along with a generous serving of strawberries. Yummy! Only complaint it took too long to get our meals. This is a gentle complaint because I saw how the chef/cook was humping it to get through all of the customer's orders. It was okay though cause my friend and I shared a sweet sticky bun as we drank our cinnamon flavored coffees. I would definitely do this one again. Way to go Dudley Cafe! read more

Walking in you feel like you are in a cafe in the South End. The space is welcoming.. large picture windows that flood with light and local art all around. We ordered a chai latte and two sandwiches - sweet potato and tandoori. Both of them delicious!!! The chai latte was so good too! On the weekends they have a live jazz band playing. The band is pretty awesome. We were in a rush but it would be easy to spent a lot of time in this place. read more

Food isn't even that good here it's just the only decent looking food joint around in the area. The customer service is even worse as all the girls are young high schoolers with no manners or any idea of how to speak politely to their paying customers. I walked in around 12 on Friday for lunch the place was packed with a line and several different girls working the counter. One specifically making drink orders. At the time when she asked me if I wanted a drink I had not decided if I would get any beverages from them, so she proceeded to them next customer behind me. Once I reached the register to order my food I also added a small lemonade. I paid and waited on the side for my food to be prepared I wasn't in a rush as my lunch break was long enough and my office was directly upstairs. I just kindly reminded the girl that I ordered a small lemonade and her response was beyond unprofessional, she said "so when I asked you earlier if you wanted a drink that's when you should have told me" so then I responded with "that's fine if you don't want to make it you can return my drink". The issue here is that management isn't training their employees correctly and allowing their workers to act or say whatever they please. They have officially lost a customer and it's unfortunate because like I said before I work directly upstairs along with many other departments in a six floor office building. My review will not only reach the audience on Yelp but as well as my entire building of employees. read more

I can only comment on baked goods (very good) and vegetarian items (so so). The sweet potato sandwich is really excellent. But I'm really disappointed and confused by the changes in some of their posted menu items - specifically the Malala rice bowl, which was supposed to be brown rice, egg, kale, mushrooms, soy sauce and sriracha but was changed to white rice with tofu and vegetables and is extremely bland. I was also looking forward to a promised salad with mango, papaya and peanuts that never materialized. I hope they'll come up with some more creative vegetarian options. read more

Stopped by early this morning for some breakfast. The place was not crowded, but I'm guessing that will change quickly as word gets out. Ever since my husband and I moved into Fort Hill I've loved the neighborhood but wished there were more walkable places to get a bite to eat in a comfortable setting. Dudley cafe is a little far but worth the walk. Their breakfast sandwich with ham and cheddar came with a yummy sauce, sautéed spinach and a perfectly cooked egg. Big enough to fill you up, but not too big- and it was delicious. The latte loses points for weak foam but the flavor was excellent- didn't need sugar, which is the measure of a good latte in my opinion. Dudley cafe is a tiny bit pricey, but no more so than any of the Jp coffee shops I've frequented in my years living on the orange line. I also appreciated the friendliness of the staff and the lovely, sunny seating area. Will definitely be back here! read more

Since the onset of gentrification, I mean revitalization of Dudley "square". Dudley Cafe has hit the scene. Though this place gives off a positive vibe, it is nothing more than a Starbucks imitator at best. The staff and the service were slow and unresponsive. My only concern is whether this cafe is for local residents or a new more posh crowd. read more

This was my first time here. I gave it three stars because first of all the store was nice and clean. The homemade pastry look delicious. But TOO expensive for a breakfast sandwich and everything else. I'll stick to my Mario's across the street and Dunkin donuts for my breakfast.
