My son in law selected Due because he thought I would want an Italian meal because I am Italian. That's risky because we tend to be more critical of our own native cuisine than others...think: "That's not how my Nana made it." But on we went on a weekday evening. My dish was Ravioli, and atop said Ravioli was...what, greens of some kind? Hey I didn't order no stinkin' salad. But wow the greens were delicious and nicely complimented the Ravioli. Commodity meats and cheeses on the charcuterie board...sliced THICK! Do you want me to use a knife and fork to eat the pepperoni steak on this board?!? Pepperoni, mortadela, and cappicola should be sliced thin so that you can pick small bites. You also need to slice thin so the fats can reach room temperature quickly to develop their full flavor. Cheese was much of the same...huge CHUNKS on the board. It's obvious that this is a time saver in the kitchen. It would take too much effort to prepare the board properly for charcuterie. Bread and oil for the table were complete junk. Bread was just doughy and tasteless, and dipping plate of oil was definitely not EVOO but some rancid junk. We should have just paid and left at this point, but we didn't, and I hate myself for not following my gut. Filet mignon......eh? Drenched in some awful sauce and served with pickled onions on top. Toss in some frozen corn and carrots to finish....wannabe cuisine. Be better. Burger with caesar salad. What a joke. How do you screw up a burger? By being a wannabe poser that's how! Burger had salad greens on top and was smothered in mediocre aioli. Strange char as well. Caeser salad had dusting of crouton crumbs instead of croutons. This is a "try hard" move. I visited this little spot on East Gay Street twice and was delighted both times. The first time was during a Monday happy hour. It was so busy, they squeezed my barstool into the server's station at the bar, but they took care of me despite the cramped conditions. You see, Monday nights feature half-price wine-by-the-bottle AND live jazz music. The locals and many of the city's visitors have figured out it's a great place to be. After sipping on a glass of Sauvignon Blanc for a few minutes, I ordered the baked brie cheese appetizer. It came out in a fig and cherry port wine sauce, puff pastry and sprinkled with crushed pistachios. Delicious! The following Saturday, I popped in about the same time of day. Like most places, Due Amici limits happy hour specials to weekdays, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty to choose from. For my dinner during my second visit, I chose a Conti Pinot Grigio (from Italy, of course), then followed it up with a lamp chop appetizer. Rare. Very rare. And delicious. You do NOT want to overcook a nice cut of lamb, and these were that. No game taste apparent at all, meaning they were indeed from young lambs. They came out positioned on a pile of red cabbage and fig slaw that had a bit of tang but not too much, and a pesto calabrese. My server also brought a nice section of warm baguette with seasoned olive oil for dipping. Service was less consistent, though it's not fair to compare the two visits. Monday was crazy, and everyone was rocking and rolling. Maybe they took a little longer to get to me than I might have liked, but the place was packed and the delays were understandable. When the bartender did get to me (between making drinks for all the servers in addition to taking care of his own guests at his bar), I had his full attention and he made some excellent recommendations. On my Saturday visit, it was early and the place was very quiet. The bartender was attentive, welcoming me promptly, bringing water and menus, and making suggestions. He promptly brought my wine, then my solid food when it was ready, but then he and other servers engaged in personal conversations that probably should have taken place farther from the paying customers. They weren't gross or vulgar, but they were talking about things that not everyone would care to hear. All in all, I recommend Due Amici, which means "two friends." I pretty much guarantee you'll enjoy the food, and you won't leave a stranger. read more

My friend and I happened upon Due Amici tonight while walking around looking for a good restaurant and I was impressed. We did not have a reservation as it seemed that the restaurant is mostly reservation based but they were able to take us. We decided to split everything that we ordered which was a great idea as we got to try so much more! For our appetizers, we got the Brussel sprouts and the caprese salad. The Brussel sprouts have Dijon aioli, candied walnuts and Gorgonzolas. The candied walnuts were AMAZING! The caprese salad was very good but one of my tomatoes was not very good. For our main entree, we split the Margherita Pizza that had the most delicious garlic oil. I would definitely get this pizza again as it was superb. I got the gnocchi and added chicken, as well as trying someone else's pizza at my table. The sauce for the gnocchi was exceptional, but the gnocchi itself was a bit overdone and tough. The chicken was good, but the main flavor with it was the char on it, which is good, just didn't blend with the rest of the dish. The pizza was also good, but especially for the toppings I was surprised it wasn't more flavorful. I was with a large group so that could have been a factor. The wine list was very good, but I also got an espresso martini that I was not impressed with. Just disappointed with the entire experience. Food was nothing memorable, just very bland, and the place was a little run down. Hubby and I I had dinner reservations set but were able to get out and downtown early so we popped in for happy hour. When we got our apps, calamari and grilled lamb chops, the food plate presentation was beautiful. But the food itself was very bland. Crumbled sausage, a hint of fennel and delicious spicy marinara sauce. However, today I tried something new! I went for the salmon with mushroom risotto and an arugula side salad. This dish was one of the prettiest plates I've ever gotten to eat. The flavors of the salad were my favorite part. Goat cheese, grapefruit, arugula with a delish dressing! So good! Their happy hour is pretty solid here, as well. It ends at 6:30 so be sure to get your orders in prior to that. The hostess mentioned it right away as we asked to see the menu before we made the decision to eat here. House wines were $5 and all appetizers and pizzas were half price. The atmosphere is comfortable and during the latter part of our visit we were treated to an excellent jazz trio. As to the food and drink.....The bartender, Devin, couldn't have been more accommodating. He guided my girlfriend thru the wine options, all of which were quality selections which included a Cabernet and then a Pinot Noir. We snacked on a their bruschetta, a deconstructed version featuring a tasty crostini, mozzarella and a tomato/basil/garlic/balsamic combo. We followed with a sausage pizza, an incredibly priced happy hour option. On a previous visit we had ordered the pesto/chicken pizza. We both agreed that each was the city's best in their respective categories - high praise indeed. (My GF has it up there with another city's best in category, the truffle mushroom pizza from Figlio's). While heading downtown isn't the most convenient, Due Amici makes our list for regular visits. Four stars for two small plates we shared. Flip side: the other two apps, they were nothing to write home about. The calamari and Brussels sprouts were both duds. The calamari didn't have much flavor, and the lite tasteless corn breading didn't give it umph, either. While I am a true believer that calamari needs to hold its own, and the dip(s) that is paired with should merely enhance, not be the star of the show, the lemon aioli drizzled left me still waiting for that ta da! moment, and wasn't pronounced, rather bland. The Brussels sprouts small plate also didn't have the best flavor profile. Close to having a burnt taste, it didn't keep us craving more. The chopped walnuts tasted candied-esque? Mix that with the dijon sauce, and it was kind of a jumble of mismatched flavors, imo. The Mushroom Pizza and Beet Salad were, without hesitation, the superstars of the meal. These two apps are the sole reason for star #4. The Beet Salad is quite possibly in my top three favorites, running strong. The hazelnut vinaigrette was incredible, being so light and subtle flavorful. Paired perfectly with the fresh arugula. The candied grapes were a cute veer from the normal boring dried cranberries humdrum. And the dish came with five or six good-sized plops of fresh goat cheese - the crème de la crème. I definitely know I'll be back for this pearl of a dish. Thursdays, during Happy Hour (5-7p), all pizzas are half-priced. We shared the Mushroom, added sausage to it for an extra $2. And man did they load on the fennel sausage! Very impressive. Also lots of shrooms, and plenty of ricotta dollops. Great flavorful crust. That was a darn good bargain. It was nice sitting at the bar, with the sunlight shinning in. The bar does not have purse hooks, which made it awkward to hold our purses on our lap - down-grade. Also, the bartender was polite, but very minimal interaction. I still have some left on my Dine Originals gift card, so I'll definitely be back. However, this time, I know what's worth getting again, and what to pass on. Maybe next time, an entree is in order. read more
