I order a spinach pie to go but when I got home and sat to eat it was meat pie so I went back and thought that's not a big problem and could be a mistake but the lady on the counter started to misbehave and told me I order led the meat pie but she wasn't the one who took my order.... she was so rude and was literally screaming on me..... Spinach and cheese bureks. Authentic Albanian recipe. I had each on two occasions, with a cup of cappuccino both times. They warm the bureks for you. Spinach tastes fresh and not soggy at all - the flakey dough adds to the fresh-out-of-oven flavor, with a touch of somewhat "nutty" aroma. Maybe there was something with pine nuts baking in the oven at the time. I didn't see any pine nuts in the filling, though. Cheese is best while it is hot - try-not-to-burn-your-tongue hot. Both are excellent without being greasy. Traditional cuisines just as the Albanians enjoy (but right here in the NYC). Pumpkin Burek: I think it was at Dukagjini where I had the pumpkin Burek several years ago. It was a seasonal, limited time only flavor. Slightly sweet and tasted like a pumpkin pie without the overwhelming sugar or spice. Just pure goodness. My wishlist: 1) More paper napkins, please. 2) Half portions (1/8 instead of 1/4) would be great for us foodies yearning to taste several flavors. 3) Pumpkin and/or yam bureks (seasonal flavors) if Albanians traditionally make them. Visitors: I agree with some reviewers. Parking is hard to find. I used the public transportation, but Uber or taxi would be a great bet. read more

This is the definitely the best Burek spot in the entire world. The service is great for a small spot like this. The lady at the counter is all smiles. Everyone is busy in there at all times. And at any time of the day when you order Burek and they open the oven you will see 10 pies in their being prepared. Everything is fresh. And the place is clean as well. The Burek is always cooked to perfection. From the doh to the meat everything is just the way it should be. I've been coming here for years and this is honestly the one establishment that has not let me down after 20+ years of coming here. They have been consistent with their Burek and that's what is important. The yogurt is spectacular. I don't even need a drink Bc I take a bite of my Burek then a sip of the yogurt. Besides for the zoo and botanical garden, this is one of the only places I would trek to the Bronx for. It is a hole in the wall, which makes it even more awesome. My mom and I shared the cheese and spinach burek and it was plenty for both. You have to get a cup of ayran as well (cold yogurt drink).... and it will hit the spot. Owner is a sweet lady from Kosovo and there was a boy in the back prepping and stretching the dough in all types of directions, like a BOSS. Real good stuff read more

Having been to Albania and eaten a ton of burek there, I can safely attest to the fact that Dukagjini Burek serves the exact same authentic spinach, cheese, and meat pies that you would expect if you were visiting this beautiful country on the Adriatic. The people who run this establishment exhibit true Albanian hospitality, and this comes off with the quality of the food they serve. The spinach and cheese burek was good. $4.50 gets you a slice that's big enough for two to share. The restaurant has a cozy feel with seating for about a half dozen people. One point of clarification I discovered while talking to the manager and her son, they don't actually use "halal" meat. For them, it means no pork rather than meat that's been ritually prepared according to Islamic law. read more

Amazing byrek!!! I am American but am married to an Albanian, and have been to Albania 3 times, and this is better then any byrek I have had even in Albania, besides my mother in laws :) the byrek with feta cheek(byrek me djathe) is amazing, lots of cheese to go with the thick, homemade filo dough that surrounds it. Excellent taste and quality here. By far one of the best, although in my opinion THE BEST Byrek in the tri state area. Always made fresh, and they use fresh ingredients too. The yoghurt is also fantastic and goes really well with all different pies/slices (meat, cheese or spinach). I highly recommend Dukagjini. I've heard and read of all the accolades for this family-run ethnic food establishment, that I knew I need to make a trek of it for my weekly 'Friday Ethnic Exploration" series (yes, I'm terming it 'delicately' instead of calling it 'Summer Friday Skip-Work Day'). Before heading up north, I knew this is a 'single product' shop (just like all the felafels, meatballs, and and cupcakes in the city), but if you are good at something, might as well stick to your craft, agree? Stepping in, it is a minimalist shop, run by two ladies. Basically, you just choose the filling of your burek and pair it with a yogurt drink if you want to tame some of the butteriness of the flaky crust. I see a lot of native speakers patronizing the shop, so you know this is the 'real stuff'. $4 for a slice sounds like a lot for a slice of pie, if you also put the dollar slice pizza into the comparison spectrum, but in perspective, this is a large slice, almost 1/6 of a medium sized pizza, so you know you won't leave hunger after you finished off the entire wedge. I chose the spinach burek. The lady probably would've heated it up for me, but I asked for it to go. She bagged it with two flimsy take out napkins placed on top of the burek (why? They would just soak up all the oil...hmmm...) and mechanically handed it over to me like she had been repeating this procedure for the umphth time. She knows what she's doing and she knows her stuff is good. No frill. No gimmick. Just keep churning out flaky pies day after day to feed the mass. Is it worth traveling up for? Depends if you are a lover of burek, but this is not something I could afford to consume daily (yes, there's spinach, but sandwiched between buttered carb, so you do the logical reasoning). It is nice to visit at least once, just to show some love. It is also quite cool to check out the surrounding shops and cultural shops. So yes, go if you haven't yet. read more

I'm used to the single-braid, ring burek made in Bosnia, but this layered pie version is excellent as well. I had 2 slices of the spinach pie (made with a little Feta cheese) that I took home and ate with Ajvar. I wish there was a vegan version, but the Spinach burek is a good veggie option. They also do meat or cheese burek - all for $4 per slice or $16 for an entire pie of 4 big slices. The lady at the counter was very nice, and it seems Dukagjini attracts a diverse population from the neighborhood. Burek unites the world!! read more

Although I ate bureks here a couple months ago, I still remember the experience like it happened yesterday. There are three kinds of bureks, they're all very affordable, and they all taste amazing. Also, the service is quick, and there is some seating if you want to eat in, though it's also pretty easy to just grab and go if you need to. Stopped by here after spending a day at the Bronx Zoo. I've tried Burek's at three different places, and Dukagjini sets the standard. I ordered the meat burek with a cup of yogurt. The burek is not greasy, and was delicious. This is a small family owned restaurant. Service is warm, and quick. Been there numerous times, specifically taking the subway from Manhattan to get there. This is not the most easily accessible place (by public transport) but the quality of the burek is outstanding. It is simply the perfect combination of the properly kneaded dough, butter and filling - all three varieties - cheese, meat, spinach. Succulent, tender and flavorful, pleasing to the senses texture. This is apparently a family establishment, they bake the burek in small batches - important for the consistency and quality. Hands down the best burek in the city on a par with the best you can find in Istanbul, probably better. They also make on the premises excellent yoghurt. For $4:00 large slice and $1.50 yoghurt I don't think you can find a better deal around. Highly recommended! read more
