Really enjoy Dukes. I used to have to drive to Walterboro to get my Dukes fix but now its right in front of my house! How cool is that? They are known for their buffet and I will say you cant miss with what they serve, of course the mac and cheese is amazing!!!!! they have a drive thru to make it convenient. the only drawback I see is the parking lot fills up fast plus if its raining hard the parking lot floods but swimming here for BBQ is worth it! read more

Finally, a BBQ place that gets it. Since opening, Dukes has gotten only better. Buffett style Including real honest to goodness BBQ HASH.! I grew up going to Dukes out in Orangeburg when we would visit family there. Long before the business expanded to the multiple locations today. This place is a no frills, buffet style, serve yourself kind of place. The best food out there is the kind that starts in local hands, doesn't change a lot over the years and keeps it simple. What Duke's lacks in quality, it makes up for in volume. The buffet is a good option for hungry people who are not looking for high quality. Fried chicken, okra, hush puppies, french fries, etc. Only BBQ the night we went was pulled pork that was standard quality and flavor. The whole place needs a good cleaning and an update. When we saw this place we thought out taste buds would be completely satisfied and quickly become extremely disappointed. Worst first visit and will be my last visit ever! I brought my 4 year old boy to eat bc the sign said voted best buffet. Gross!!! There were flies mating on the buffet counter. Flies everywhere in the restaurant. Everything looked old. We came on an afternoon after his camp. The bathroom was dirty. The employees were standing around talking about their rate of pay & benefits, eating the food off the buffet. After that, I left. I had called to address this with the manager or owner, no one was available. Kept on for a month & no return call. Finally got a hold of them today and the owner rushed me off the phone and told me he had to go bc he was busy. WOW!!! Just NASTY slop! Any place that has employees pick off the buffet and eat it is disgusting!!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! I would be cautious of the other locations too. I just read a previous 1 star review stating that they lock the customers in at 8:40pm when the sign says they close at 9pm! Do if there's a fire people can get hurt or die!!! My first time in the restaurant was very shocking. I didn't really expect an all you can eat buffet to be this good. Although I didn't get much of everything, their pulled pork and their mild sauce on it was amazing. It was some of the best I have had. The selection for an all you can eat buffet wasn't tremendous, but for the size of the place it was perfect. Everyone was extremely nice, including other customers. The BBQ buffet is somewhat of a staple in the carolinas and Dukes does it best. Dukes is more than a restaraunt, it is an institution, a gathering place, a community forum, and a damn good place to eat. The buffet is always well stocked with what you might expect, BBQ of course, rice and hash, all the vegetables, fried chicken, bbq chicken, and a whole host of other southern fried delicacies. The best part is the inclusion of dessert in the buffet, and I can only attest to the banana pudding, its all I have tried, and its amazing. I would have to say though that Dukes BBQ is good, not great, hence the 4 stars. The dining room is not huge and there are onkly a few tables but they are community tables. On any given day you may find yourself in the company of construction workers, police officers, business men, and everything in between. The food tasted old and like it had been sitting out for a while. The Mac and cheese was watery and the corn fritters were cold and bland. Fried chicken greasy, salty and not tasty. Banana pudding however was out of sight. I felt I probably could've done better at Golden Corral and Golden Corral is cheap crap. Priced reasonably but I don't get the hype. Best barbecue in Charleston. This is not saying as much as it might have been just ten years ago(I'm looking at you, "Mr. B's"), but Dukes has good pulled pork with a variety of trimmings at an affordable price. The pork is usually succulent, the hash is always the right consistency, and the South Carolina yellow mustard sauce is a strong point. The stewed tomatoes are sweet, but not too sweet; quite tasty although they are begging for some okra to accompany them. The banana pudding is rich and sweet; you can actually feel your cholesterol rising as you eat it-which is exactly the kind of sensation good banana pudding should instill. Loaves of Sunbeam white bread on the table give the place an authentic, hands-on, make-your-own-sandwhich feel. Can't beat the location. Drive-thru is super convenient. The dining room is always full of good ole' boys, which I guess is a good thing in a similar way that a Chinese restaurant full of Chinese people is a good thing. Great rice & hash. BBQ pork was moist & tasty but lacked a smokey flavor. Good selection of veggies. Cole slaw was tasty. Meat loaf was availiable. I didn't try it, however, the fried chicken was over the top. I sampled the the potato salad which had sweet pickle & pimento in it. It was different but decent. Much more on this buffett but I always get the rice/hash, pork bbq, fried chicken and slaw. I usually have no room for the other choices & deserts. $13.00 is a deal considering all you can eat & drink. I wish they had real lemon for tea. Greasy, salty fries & burnt hush puppies. Clumpy , greasy mac and cheese.I think that stuff on the rice was supposed to be hash, but tasted like refried beans. We ordered 3 plates and only got 2 1/2. The chicken was like they cooked it the day they opened and just keep reheating it in the microwave each day, hoping someone will buy it. I have been to this place twice, both times the Mac and cheese has been completely improperly prepared, in my opinion inedible... Way too eggy and the cheese was burned on top. There's little to no cheese within the pasta. It's like scrambled eggs and salty pasta. An abomination to true southern Mac and cheese!!! The pulled pork was dry, and had no flavor. The dessert trays were a huge blob of turned, soggy ingredients. Not edible. Veggies were ok but I think they are canned and not seasoned. Fried chicken was fabulous. The plates need to be bigger and more sturdy instead of small, flimsy un recyclable styrofoam. Beverages are offered in styrofoam as well. The sauces should be on the table, not in large vats on the buffet! They do not offer enough meat variety of place BBQ sauce in large quantity on the buffet. No red or yellow or rice or smoked sausage, no smoked or BBQ chicken! No beef or ribs! This place has a lot of customers, with the buffet beginning a few inches from the register is cumbersome, so going for seconds on the small buffet feels like your waiting or cutting the line.
