Bar Mash is a place that fully embraces the holidays. It would be very hard to be a grinch when you see the entire placed bathed in Christmas lights with festive music playing and people laughing and having a great time. We had to order drinks off their holiday menu, and they did not disappoint! My wife tried the Heat Miser with Hangar 1 Vodka, pineapple, ginger beer, and habanero tincture. The drink resembles his flaming hair with a little red-light lighting up the ice. You can choose your heat level as well from mild, medium to hot, my wife chose the medium and it had a nice kick. I tried the other side with the White Christmas with Hangar 1 Vodka, Cointreau, rosemary simple, lemon, and white cranberry juice. It glittered like new fallen snow with a little white light to add to the glow. The cranberry provided a great festive flavor. For our appetizer we ordered off the happy hour menu and got the chips and queso for only $5, but we added chorizo for just $2 more. The queso was very flavorful with the right amount of spicy chorizo throughout. My wife ordered the steak sandwich off the Factory Classics menu. It came with shaved beef, onion, arugula, green tomato aioli, on a cheddar rosemary hoagie roll and a side of chips. The steak was nice and tender and that hoagie roll was spectacular. Finally, I order the Reindeer Chilli, which of course was not reindeer and chili was misspelled to add the "chill" factor. Why this is not a regular item I don't know. It was beef prime rib, kidney beans, cheddar, scallions, and sour cream. It literally had hunks of prime rib, and the flavor was warm and inviting enough to melt any grinches heart. This might be my favorite bar in Charleston. It's dark. It's moody. The service is great, the prices are great and the food is great bar. The bartenders are always knowledgeable about their amazing bourbon and liquor selections. They also often have special menu items for certain themes and seasons. The staff are all kind and efficient including their bouncer on nights they monitor occupation levels. Inside is cozy and comfortable without being too dark. They share it with a few different businesses but we had no problem finding a spot. 2nd, Such a Vibe!!! The restaurant is attached to the bigger Mercantile but like a smaller, cooler spot. Both were kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. 3rd, The FOOD! These burgers were amazing. So good! And the fries......so many fries! All served hot and delicious. You can absolutely tell nothing sat in the kitchen but came directly to table. Also, while chatting with another customer, the bartender overheard us mention Euchre. Guess what?? 4 stars for the cool jazz band that was playing outside and the helpful staff on the inside... The place is spacious, clean and outside, plenty of outdoor seating. My running club hosts weekly bridge run/walks that start and end at Bar Mash, and we love this venue. Many of us stick around for food and drinks afterwards, as they have outdoor seating. Plus, the service, food, and drinks have always been wonderful. Mash has craft cocktails for refined palates, but we usually stick with beer, wine, and food. During the winter months, Tuesday is ramen night, and in the summer months, Tuesday brings taco specials. My husband and I went to Trivia night (Thursdays 7-9pm) and had a great time! The game host was pretty funny. The questions were clever and he played fun, upbeat music the whole time. As far as $16 burgers go in Charleston, this one does not rank in my top 5 (go to Felix for a burger instead). They have really cool drinks here and the overall vibe is casual, rustic, and fun. We have been visiting bar Mash for trivia on Thursday nights regularly for the last few months. There are usually not a lot of teams, so it is not hard to place in the top 3 and get some cash. I usually go for the bottle beer specials which are $3 a piece and although they rotate, they are usually a great small brewery which is a chance to try something new. For food, you cannot go wrong with the Nachos, they are really delicious and come with Chorizo. The one Kosher member of our group wishes they had other meat options, but he gets contented with other food in the menu. The Brussels sprouts are also highly recommended and the portion is large enough to share with a group. Worth a visit! read more

Say it's raining and you want to stay in, but you really need to get out of the house, you compromise with this perfect bar that's full of Christmas lights hanging from the ceiling, bar games tucked throughout the tables, one Tv to appease whoever needs sports in their life, and a baller cocktail list. Mercantile and Mash are like siblings where Mercantile is well kept and an early riser serving foods and pastries while Mash is the late nighter that lives on whiskey, live music and games. I prefer brother Mash's lifestyle, at least on the weekends. I like the Mash is off the beaten path and usually not too busy that you can have a conversation with your friends and sip on a cocktail. There are times when the noise level will crank up a notch especially when a wedding party from upstairs arrives or the band playing uses drums. I recommend trying one of the specialty cocktails as they are a more reasonable price point for a unique drink. Some of the specialties I have had were a frozen irish coffee, a bourbon drink with grapefruit, and grasshopper. For a fancy whiskey bar, this place also serves up jello shots usually made with whiskey. They can be a hit or miss but for the price point, I can't complain. My favorite part about this place is the new shuffleboard table in the center of the bar. In college, I was an avid fan of shuffleboard at a local bar but that was on a beer soaked broken down college table. This thing is magnificent. There's bocce ball in the back if that is your style as well as a few arcade games near the entrance. After the Mercantile section closed, we moved over to Mash Bar. We grabbed a booth and it took a few minutes to get a waitress. I wasn't bothered though because they were pretty busy. It was a cool atmosphere; it has a bocce ball and another type of game. There was live music. Specifically, it was bluegrass night. I ordered a Mash Burger and it came out very quickly. It was also quite tasty. The French fries were also cooked perfectly. I also really liked the waitress; she was sweet and attentive. We always had full drinks. Mash and I are becoming fast friends. It's a beautiful bourbon bar tucked inside the historic cigar factory saddled up to it's Mercantile counterpart. The feel of an upper-king-hot-spot without the lines, 22 year olds, or terrible parking... in fact they have plenty of parking in the evening cause the lot outside is basically empty. The bourbon and whiskey list is awe-inspiring and Sam makes a stunning Old Fashioned every time. The drink prices range from kind-of-high to money-means-nothing-to-me. If you're not interested in dropping last months electric bill on a few drinks, the bartenders will be happy to recommend the best brown-water options that won't break the bank. Or go for a Coors Banquet which is always on draught. Although they're making classy cocktails, the shuffleboard, indoor bocce, and what seems to be my early 2000's playlist constantly on repeat, everyone's noses are on ground level instead of up in the air where you might expect them. Pro Tip: Take a first date to Mercantile. If it sucks, excuse yourself to the restroom and sneak into Mash for a night cap. They share bathrooms in the connected hallway.
