This is a true gem, a one of a kind old fashioned diner in the middle of downtown Durango. Reminiscent of a 50s diner, they feature great breakfasts and lunches, from homemade cinnamon rolls to burgers and fries. I had the special, huevo rancheros with chorizo and black beans, it was spectacular. I highly recommend the Xmas sauce, a mix of red and green sauce, bursting with flavor. This is exactly a diner. The waitresses are on top of it 100%. You've got everything you need along with the local kind of friendless which I appreciate deeply. Coming from a small town I hate being treated like a tourist and love feeling like I'm home. Which these lovely ladies did easily. My only complaints are that I asked for extra crispy bacon and hash browns and clearly they were not. The middle was raw on the hash browns of mine and my boyfriend. And we had to come back again because of closures due to staffing and literally neither of us ordered it again. And you will have to put up with the resident flies who will be on your head and on your food. It's an experience. And joy where I would choose to go again. Had breakfast here on my way out of town. Place was crowded, but my party of four managed to get a table way at the back, next to the payphone. Menu is mostly traditional diner fare/Southwestern American grub. I was tempted by a breakfast burrito, but made the right choice ordering "The Cure." This breakfast special features eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns on a huge plate, topped with American cheese and covered in green chile sauce. Made for tasty eats and was very filling. (I chose rye toast on the side.) Prices are okay for the greasy spoon food quality. Don't come in expecting a fancy experience and you'll do fine. read more

I love places like this! Sat at the counter and watched them shave fresh potatoes for every home fries order, which they cooked until crisp! Everything looked good. I got the Huevos Racheros. The green chili was excellent. I'd get something else next time as this was just a sloppy breakfast :) thrown on top of a soft flour tortilla, but I get it. Been going to the Diner for 40ish years, but had not been since new ownership. What I can tell you is the atmosphere and great food are still awesome. Server, Carly, was friendly, efficient and had some excellent travel advice for us. Smoked pork shoulder, new on the menu, is a fun substitute for bacon or ham. We were visiting Durango historic downtown today. After walking in this charming town we decided to get lunch. They have a visitor ambassador who can give you information about the different activities we were asking about food. The first place she suggested was actually closed so we decided to find something on our own. The Durango Diner looked like a local hangout so decided to try it. Now it's not a fancy place you walk in and there are people eating at a long counter and it is long and narrow. We were greeted by a smiling waitress. Our drinks came quickly and once we decided what we were ordering the order was delivered quickly. My husband ordered a item called The Cure and I ordered a BLT and hash browns. There are different varieties of The Cure he got the classic. When our waitress brought it to the table it covered the entire plate. And believe it or not something as simple as a BLT can be missed up but I have to say this one was really great the tomatoes were fresh and the bacon wasjust right. My husband usually cleans his plate but there was so much food we had to get a to go box. I highly recommend this place. They have been around for over 50 years. Was lucky to score the table at the entrance. Service was quick and very friendly. Coffee was delicious and constantly topped off. Had a blueberry pancake which was huge and perfect. Others had the breakfast sandwich and mini huevos rancheros (which really wasn't mini at all). Everything was hot, fresh and delicious. Would definitely stop in again whenever in the area. Wait staff was great and made awesome suggestions. Fiancée couldn't decide between the corned beef hash and an omelette. Waitress advised any ingredients in the diner could be combined to make whatever she wanted. Corn beef hash filled omelette was made custom. I ordered The Cure. We both received huge plates of food. A classic "diner" like the ones you would see on sitcoms, people reading newspaper at the counter, staff know their regulars... The cook worked tirelessly and efficiently, handling many plates at a time. WHO MAKES HASHBROWNS BY SHREDDING FRESH POTATOES IN THE GRILL?? They do!! Yum! They made my daughter's Mickey pancake that totally made her day! (They care about how perfect their food is so much that they threw away the first masterpiece and redid it to their liking) We gobbled up our food and enjoyed this little gem very much!! Absolutely loved it. Portions are huge. Waitstaff is great. My wife is deadly allergic to gluten. One bite puts her in the hospital. She ordered the Steak and Eggs, with mushrooms. The waitstaff wasn't sure if there could be flour on the mushrooms, so rather than waiting to see what we wanted to do, they took the initiative and made sure it wasn't served to her, to protect her health. It was a massive bed of hash browns, topped with cheese and bacon, plus two eggs, and all of it smothered in mouthwatering green chili sauce. Don't miss the chili sauce! You won't find better food. Been going there for years. Service and food are top notch. However, visited today for lunch and extremely disappointed in the portions. They used to have an "open faced" Wild Turkey sandwich. 2 slices of bread covered with delicious sliced Turkey, loaded with fries and then covered with their world famous green chili sauce/gravy. To die for. Still is. Now 1 pc of bread, and less fries. Green Chili sauce/gravy barely covering the single slice of bread. I understand inflation...however raise the price if needed, but don't cut the portions when that's what people expect. Very disappointed. Food is still fantastic. read more

I was finally in Durango in the morning to grab breakfast. The Durango Diner had come highly recommended to me for their green chili biscuits and gravy. I'm so glad I tried it, the order comes with 2 eggs and there is a portion of green chili on one side and country gravy on the other. The hash browns are grated on site and the veggies are locally sourced. My husband had the ham and eggs with hash browns. Our breakfasts were great and we will return! The portions are hearty and I can guarantee you will not leave hungry! This is an authentic old time diner experience, where they are slinging good hash! I went on a Saturday and they said the wait was 20 minutes but it was much much longer, then we were seated at a bar which was kinda weird for eating breakfast but ended up being fun anyways. The food took another 40 minutes after we ordered because they were so slammed. All of the servers were really nice and kept checking up on us. My favorite thing is that my coffee cup was NEVER empty, they were prompt with refills which was awesome. The food was good, no complaints at all but it was just standard diner food (not mindblowingly good). I gave 3 stars because I don't think this place is anything special, especially with the crazy long wait and the hectic environment with servers having to practically run around to get things done. But if you go I guarantee you'll find something you like and the food is by no means bad. Still a good meal!! read more

My family and I absolutely adore this diner. For starters the service is great and friendly. Our 2 yr old daughter turned off the kitchen lights ‍ and they were very nice about it and saved us from a humiliating situation. Despite being busy our server was kind and attentive. The food, where do I even begin. The huevos rancheros was great, the corned beef hash and eggs was fantastic, and the chocolate chip pancakes (shaped like a bunny and with whipped cream) caused me to lose an semblance of self control as I stuffed my face with half my daughters pancake while she was in the restroom washing her hands. Good prices and huge portions of great food along with friendly service make this diner a MUST stop at if you're in Durango! read more

The reason why I gave this place 4 stars was because nothing but the food was outstanding. The seating is terrible. There is one long bar and stools lined up under it so everyone is sitting right next to each other. However, the food was AMAZING! The best BLTs are made here! The fries are not McDonald's paper fries; And yes, the only reason why I have ever been to McDonald's is so I can compare my reviews with literal junk. Anyway, the fries were just... OH MY GOSH sooo good! They were homemade and just right. The service was "okayish." When I come back to Durango, I will definitely ask to come back here. :) read more

Well, I love a good diner and had high hopes for the Durango Diner. Let's start with the good things....good coffee and good green chili! This is an old style diner with mostly counter seating and everything is cooked on a flat top, the vibe is cool and old school. What was most noticeable was the difference between how a local was treated VS a new comer. I sat at the counter and was passed by multiple wait staff behind the counter and no one even acknowledged me. Finally a young woman came on shift and I got a hello and some water and coffee. Ask me if I've had a coffee refill... NOPE! Too busy with the locals and chit chat to take care of other paying customers. I had to ask...grrrr. Now for the food...I ordered the Dave and Jerry breakfast. This breakfast comes with two eggs however you want them, mine were over medium and made perfectly, hashbrowns, and everything is covered with green chili and country gravy with a choice of toast. This sounded so good, however, the country gravy was very bland, a little sweet (what? It should be savory!), and the hashbrowns undercooked. I had to season a lot with salt/pepper and tobasco. The toast was smoking hot from the toaster and buttery, so that was a plus. Anyway, I'm leaving dissatisfied, still hungry and disappointed. I love a good diner, but this one is not up to par.
