Great local hardware store that manages to have it all! If you've ever been lost in Home Depot or Lowe's frantically trying to flag down an employee to get help - Durfee's is the spot to go to. The friendly staff are helpful and can point you in the right direction for what you need. There's an information desk to the left when you walk in and you can usually ask questions there, if there's no one there the cashiers can help. They do so many different things that I didn't know about - they rent power tools and it's super affordable (I rented a sander for 4 hrs for $10), they repair screen doors, they have garden supplies...the list goes on. I'm super happy with the repair they did on my screen door so I'm including a picture. read more

Had to pick up some SS wood screws recently-- and I was pleased with the direction to the second floor. Unfortunately, my companion was a 75-year-old neighbor, and he did struggle to walk the stairs. Yikes they are steep! The containers attached to the back wall ,of wood screws, was easily accessible, but sadly previous customers had made a mess of /fun ... mixing up the different sizes and styles. This is an 'old school' neighborhood hardware school. They have a little bit of a lot of things! As soon as you walk to the entrance you notice the old door. The till counter also looks like it has been there for years. The aisles are narrow and chock full of just about everything you could want. The staff are very friendly. There is a small parking area to the side of the building, but it's also right in Rolf Square, so easy to walk to if you live in the area. Amazing time capsule of a business that brings you back in time upon stepping in. True to small Local hardware stores, you can always ask for help when looking for certain items. Durfee has 2 floors in a huge building in Rolfe Square. The building at times feels a bit of a maze with tall aisles and rooms that seemingly appear out of nowhere. The inventory and amount of items seems endless, and packed into a small store is basically everything you need to run your house. Prices are fair, maybe a tiny bit higher than big box stores but you're truly paying for convenience and service here. It's well worth it! read more

Nice neighborhood hardware store on Rolf Square. They have nice helpful people that actually greet you when they see you. The store is two stories and it has a large selection of hardware supplies, do-it-yourself goodies and many other accessories used for home projects. How can you not give this place 5 stars?! This old-time hardware store is becoming a rare breed in this era of big-box home improvement stores. But, it offers something Homey Dopey often falls short on - service! Add a whole lot of tradition, too. The wood floors are traffic-worn and creaky, but that just adds to the aura of this place. I stopped by recently to buy a paintbrush, and instinctively, poked my head in the key department, hoping to see Mr. Durfee in his signature bow tie, even though it's been some years since I've seen him. Apparently, he has passed on, as someone else was working in there, but it was always cool to see him making keys well into his 80s (he may have even been pushing 90, I'm not sure). On the first floor, they have pretty well-stocked plumbing, electrical, garden and paint departments. Go up the stairs to the second floor, and you will find extensive hardware and tool departments. I purchased a heavy-duty Porter-Cable circular saw from them nearly 20 years ago, and that saw has served me very well. I pretty much know my way around a hardware store, but if you do need help, there are plenty of employees around to assist; they're always polite, too! read more

Another local business I'm excited to support. Their selection is good and their prices are fair. Since the pandemic started, the box stores have been so unpleasant with unrepentant anti maskers. Feels good to go in to a smaller, community run business. They talk the pandemic seriously and their customers seem to as well. The staff is insanely helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. The selection is that of a massive hardware store but at very reasonable prices and the store itself easy to navigate. I go here whenever I can and always feel slightly guilty when I go somewhere else (although sometimes it's a necessity--like if I need a part much later than they are open) because they deserve all the business they can get. They are the antithesis of the big box hardware stores in every possible way. They're personable, helpful, friendly, polite, and always have someone available to help you. They'll ask you the right questions about your project. They won't oversell you, and they still sell things like screws by the screw, so you don't have to buy more than you need. For Small Business Saturday, I submit this review about the best place to get keys cut, expert advice on your home projects and repairs, and that warm fuzzy feeling of a good old fashioned hardware store. My husband and I bought a television where the screws didn't fit properly into the base. We went to the best place in my old neighborhood to get the problem fixed: Durfee's Hardware. Durfee's has the feel of a simpler time, a throwback to when people took the time to ensure good service. The employees of Durfees exemplify integrity and pride in their work. I remember as a kid going to get keys made by Mr. Durfee himself with his trademark bow tie. He has since passed on, but the charm of his hardware store lives on. For our television woes, a nice young man on the second floor straightened out our problem skillfully and with a smile. He took the time to chat about the holidays and wished us a happy Thanksgiving. Home Depot and the like are fine, but they don't have the helpful staff with such experience and wisdom of a family owned hardware store like Durfee's. read more

There is a reason Durfees' is still around and that is because of the Durfiee family and their relationship to the community and their customers. No matter what I need, Durfees' has it or will get it. Their staff is from many different professions and offer expert advice and help for all my projects. They have most of the products and lines that the big box stores offer and at similar pricing. Its almost a throwback to when a grandfather went in, then his father and now the sons and grandsons. What can I say? I go to Durfee Hardware for everything. I always check there first because they probably can figure out what I need and they have it and they show me how to use it. They are the opposite of a big box store. They have a wonderful paint section, key making, plumbing supplies, seeds and gardening supplies in the spring and summer, as well as grills, leaf bags in the fall, shovels, snowblowers, and salt in the winter and a large and well stocked house keeping section. They are invariably friendly and knowledgeable about both their products and whatever home project you are attempting. This is the best hardware store I've ever been to. Everyone who works there is super helpful and knowledgeable. On several occasions I've gotten 20+ minutes of help from staff. On one in particular I was only buying an $.85 piece of pipe and had 3 clerks helping me for 25 minutes. Prices are definitely competitive with Home Depot too. read more
