They're also fantastic to their long term employees and it shows. And finally, the owner Harry is about the nicest person you could ever encounter. Every city worth its salt has one old-fashioned, yet state-of-the-art hardware store. Adler's it is for "greater Providence." Ask them what kind of screw you need for some tiny job, they'll spend the time with you to figure it out and sell you the right one, even if it's only 14 cents. It has 1 star because of the location (the closest Home Depot is in a horrible area) and the fact that it I was able to get an affordable copy of my keys here. This place was very rude. I am not sure if it was an issue of race, the age they thought I was or poor training on management's part but what I thought was "politeness" was fake. First, I asked where I could get my keys copied and the guy acted like he was annoyed by my question. He humphed and pointed me in the direction where I should get them copied. The guy that took my keys was okay. I felt like I had to work for good customer service. I just wish he didn't pretend to act occupied after giving me my keys. He followed me to the register and fiddled with a few items down the same aisle towards the register. I mean, that is what cameras are for..........right?! IF YOU GUYS ARE WORRIED ABOUT THIEF PLEASE INVEST IN THEM! I will assume there aren't any because of this guy's actions! Also those people called...police, USE THEM! The cashier was rude. She was very nice to the older lady in front of me. She also took her sweet time to bag up her item (yes ONE item). When I got up there not so much. I complimented her on her outdated "Adler's" hoody. It was the most positive thing I could witness. She threw my receipt and seemed just downright irritated by my presence... and didn't say have a nice day. My wife and I are in the process of building a custom home and figured we would stop at Adler's to take a look at their great selection of door and kitchen cabinet hardware. This place has a great selection, but when I asked if they carried a specific brand and style of handle the manager "Mark" was well incredibly rude and seemingly lobbed an insult toward me instead of listening to my question and advising. Hey Mark, you carry Kwikset, is it junk? Do you only sell high end brands? If that is the case that is great, but know that you could learn a lot from the folks at Wayfair, Build.com, and even HD. They offer CUSTOMER SERVICE, not judgmental pissy attitudes and they offer competitive prices. That was the last time i will walk in your store, I will make my purchase online. read more

This store is what I imagine the seven circles of hell to be. Perhaps it's because I've only been there during the week and this was my first weekend stop. Perhaps it's because I'm all too familiar with the convenience, glorious organization and multiple options at Home Depot. Perhaps it's because I prefer to be treated with dignity, but never in my life have I been so completely appalled by a store as I just was at Adler's. The staff - rude and aloof - are completely useless. When I asked for assistance, I was glared at, snarfed at, and then turned on so the old lady could scream into their phone system and ask for help. When the strange and unfriendly man behind the key counter "assisted" me, I was shuffled around, snapped at, and made to feel completely unappreciated, even though he messed up my order. It was gross. I won't ever, ever be back - and that makes me sad, because I love supporting the local businesses in my community. There aren't many small, family-owned hardware stores in Providence anymore, and I would like to do my part to contribute. By why should I spend 50% more on an item here and leave feeling humiliated or furious when I can go elsewhere and leave feeling satisfied and happy? I ain't no masochist, kids. I despise this store. For some reason I've been back a few times because everyone always raves about. In my handful of visits though I've found the store confusing and claustrophobic. Worse, the staff is rude, aloof, unhelpful, and seemingly annoyed when there are customers around. Talk about rude, the staff is far from welcoming or helpful. I hate to write bad reviews but I also hate people who judge a book by it's cover. Yes I am younger but I am in the middle of a home renovation and have a 10k budget for interior design. I walked in looking for wallpaper and left with a frown. When I walked in the store it was empty, despite that I didn't get a "hello how are you" or "something I can help you find?". Just a cold blank stare then a women ignoring me. The best part of it was when a older women with sun-glasses and bleach blonde hair walked in with a Gucci bag everybody who worked their surrounded her. Conveniently located in the city. I'm always down to support a small business. The prices for some of the common household things are a little high, but worth it to support them. Didn't find what I needed (Black Gold's website listed then as a stockist but I found them to be complete sold out of that soil) but was happy to peruse and find other things I needed for home. read more

I work at a local museum in Pawtucket and I live Providence. Adler's is a fine family hardware store. Whenever I have needed to replace glass, make duplicate keys, replace a plumbing fixture, find a nut or a drill bit, or (and this is mostly what I purchase) look for advice about painting, buy paint, sandpaper, brushes, or need to find another source for something they do not carry, Adler's has been 100% helpful. Adler's is a resource, and everyone I have interacted with has been unfailingly helpful and friendly. For certain things they may be more expensive, but if you are buying large quantities of paint, for example, you can establish a business relationship that will keep them competitive. Adler's is also generous to the community. They have donated consultation time and materials to be auctioned off at fundraisers, and they have given advice and paint every time I have approached them. This is the reason why people buy local, instead of at the Big Box stores. So I would take issue with the people who find Adler's "unhelpful" or "rude," having many intersections with them in the past ten years, every one of which was helpful and friendly. Customers are entitled to their opinions, but let's be honest: they are not really 'right' all of the time. If you arrive with an attitude, maybe you'll miss the essence of the place. If you go to Adler's looking for help, in my experience, Adler's has always been there, as well as for my wife and everyone else I've sent to Wickenden Street. P.S. Though you have to wait a bit at the service counter, the staff are very helpful and clearly know what they're talking about as they've been in business forever. I'm willing to pay a little more for their advice. Anything you need for home chores. Great location on the corner of Wickenden so you don't have to get on any of the highways for the mega-stores. Honestly, they only lose a point because it's a labyrinth in there, but I'm sure I'll grow to know it well. read more

I've been shopping at Adler's for over 10 years and would absolutely recommend this store to anyone. Having read other reviews on Yelp, I've seen a bunch of comments about the staff being rude... I've never experienced that myself. I grew up in Vermont where the local hardware store was not just a place to buy paint, but it was a place to meet product experts and learn from other craftsmen. I can tell you that Adler's is the only place in RI where I've had that same experience. The staff is super knowledgeable, and more importantly, they USE the products that they sell so they can tell you how the products work in the real world. It's not that I am anti-Lowes, or anti-Home Depot, but let me tell you... stores like that carry only vendors that can deliver HUGE quantities of product at super cheap prices. Hence, the quality of the products in those stores is nothing like what you get at a store like Adler's. Try finding a high-end varnish or tung oil at a big box store. Try finding precision wood working tools, or high-end bits. They just aren't there. If you want the best, you have to go to a smaller store that can carry what they want, not what they are mandated to carry. Adler's is a small-business that's run by people who are great at what they do. I wish I lived closer so I could go there over big-box more often. I grew up on Providence so I had been to Adler's several times though there was a Benny's closer to where I grew up so not all that many times. Over Thanksgiving break, I was back in RI to visit my mom who needed some glass cut and had heard that Adler's was the place to come. It is a distinctive building with a nearby parking lot but I was most impressed with with the helpfulness of the staff as well has how neat and well organized they have their inventory. It is really nice to have a hardware store within walking distance. Their selection is small, but they have most everything you would need for small-scale home improvement. Prices are high - I assume they markup everything given its 'urban' location. I don't go to Adler's when I have a long list, but it is fine when you just need one thing. The major problem I have with Adlers is their hours - since they are family run they are open 'traditional' business hours (only open until 6 during the week) and are closed on Sundays. Dear Adler, Thank you for carrying C2 paint and helping me find the perfect shade of gray. After exhausting my search at Benjamin Moore, I came here and found the color I was searching for! It helps that C2 paint sample strips are a 100% match to the actual paint in the can which saved this DIY home renovator moolah! I did not have to keep buying paint samples!!! I also really appreciate the fact that you carry Waterlox! When it sold out in the store, you called me back to save me a can when a new shipment came in the next week. I love that you carry all these hard to find specialty items (the big box stores don't carry) and your staff is so knowledgeable (compared to the people especially the teens working at the big box stores). read more

Even though they have a much smaller space than the big box hardware stores, they always have what I need. Also, they are really good at cutting keys. When my partner and I moved to Fox Point we were at Adler's just about every other day! Very attentive staff. Sometimes you may have to wait a little while if you're getting paint but that's only because they take their time in working with each client to make sure they get the paint they want so who can complain about that really? Also located on Wickenden street along with many of my other favorite stores is this hardware shop where I get most of my stuff. It's always difficult to find parking right next to the business you are looking for but if you don't mind walking a few blocks you'll be able to find ample parking. I came here to get keys made and they were quick, efficient and affordable. Best thing is that all the keys worked! They also have a great selection of paints and other things you expect to find in a hardware store. If it's something small and generic don't go all the way down to the Home Depot when you can be here at Adler's. read more

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Adlers! It is the coolest hardware store I have been to in RI (we had pretty great ones in Washington DC and environs, though). Adlers has HUGE paint sample boards as opposed to 2"x 2" sample sheets. Had it not been for that, my bedroom would still remain unpainted with multi-shaded patches covering the surface. Their C2 paint is fabulous, covers very well, and comes in every nuance of every color in the rainbow - and then some more!) Their hardware is beyond good. Adler's has hardware extraordinaire - forget Home Depot and Lowes if you want drawer and door hardware that is above and beyond what you will find in the big box stores -- and viva la difference! I had been eyeballing a beautiful door handle created by a San Francisco artist whose company is called Soko. The handle is part of the artist's "Manhandles Collection." Marc Adler, the owner, allowed me to buy one handle (for my foyer closet) from the sample display board (and not at a discount, but at the retail rate). To this day I have not told my husband (nor will I tell you) the price of that handle. :-) But I loved it and I still love it and it was worth every dime. The help is friendly, there is free parking, it's fun to go to the East Side anyway, so I'm always willing to take the trip "all the way to Providence" from Warwick, and I give this place five stars. Woohoo! Adler's is as good as it gets! You won't find better in Rhode Island. PS - Adler's also has designers who will help you choose paint colors AND wonderful designer wallpaper and other decorative items. Highly recommended!! read more

This store is fantastic. If you are looking for advice on paint colours and decorating, then this is the place to visit. I get the feeling these folks really know what they are talking about. I heard one of them mention most of the staff have been there for 10 plus years! impressive.
