He had come across my photos on Instagram and we ended up talking about my hair and the what 'ifs' hair styles, keep in mind this was my first time ever going to a professional I always used a box hair dye. It's very hard to find a quality stylist that truly knows how to do a quality curly cut. Because of covid and moving back to LA I hadn't cut my hair since July 2019! Due to plenty of other positive reviews from fellow curly gals I decided to give Dustin a try and I'm so glad I did! DUSTIN KILLED IT I'm a male and I've been growing out my hair now for about a year and a half! It stopped growing as much my hair gets very puffy and thick so I got to do a lot of Maintenance. I purposefully waited a week to write this review to give my hair a chance to do its own thing and give a well calibrated review, not just first impressions. I found Dustin here on Yelp in a desperate search minutes after a disastrous attempt at a DIY home haircut following a YouTube tutorial. He actually answered the phone, which blew me away. I was expecting to leave a message and not hear back for a couple of days as has been my experience with other stylists. He calmed me down and reassured me he could help, offered suggestions and set expectations for my appointment. I had a feeling from that moment that I was going to be in great hands. Of course, when I left Dustin's chair I felt fabulous! I let him know I was looking for volume while still keeping most of my length and he got to work. I didn't even need to show him a picture of what I wanted, yet he gave the the cut I had ALWAYS asked for from other stylists but never quite got. When he was done, my hair looked and felt amazing. But the real test was going to be in the days that followed. I typically wash my hair twice a week, with wash day being the one day when my hair actually looks decent. My hair STILL looked great on day 2 and 3 after my visit. But this was with the products he used on me and I thought, "surely it'll look different with my own products." Following his recommendations on using some of the products I already own, I washed and styled and I have never felt as good about my hair as I do now!!! It has so much body and bounce and the curls don't flatten out even a couple of days at washing. Even my husband, who usually prefers my hair blow-dried straight keeps telling me how cute it looks. I have finally found the one person I can trust with my hair. Our conversation was lively and entertaining, I felt quite at ease in his chair. He is totally worth the hour long drive. Dustin is a very nice guy, super enthusiastic & outgoing. However if you have TEXTURED curls, he is may not be the stylist for you. I have lots of different curl patterns in my hair and it is very thick. Once my curls are washed and no product, the frizz & multi textures get outta control. Dustin started off with a dry cut, which is what I expected for a curly cut. However once he washed it and started cutting again on fresh hair the difficulty started as my frizz and multi textures were apparent. I think the technique used which is the Ouidad method works well for curls up to 3b style. I have a mixture of 3b-4b, and this method did not work. I stopped him when he was almost finished after about 2 hours in the salon as it was clear the growing frizz and difficulty with my curl pattern was leading to a less than ideal cut. Long story short if you have textured curls 3c or higher, maybe try someone else. If your curl pattern is 3b or lower, Dustin could be perfect for you. read more
