Loved this restaurant! Celebrated my Daughter's 18th Birthday here. We attended the dinner time opening for the restaurant. Service was excellent, Food was excellent and my 27 year old daughter enjoyed the wine selections. I would have given it 5 stars but it was a $15 charge to eat cupcakes that we purchased from a different bakery. A great restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. I've been here several times and have yet to be disappointed. My meal is typically a steak, a salad, and a couple Manhattans. Dessert as well of course. The service has always been solid. They also have an attached grocery-like area where you can get prepared foods, wine, cheese, groceries, and a Winnie the Pooh bear. One of those items may not actually be available. Dusty's Cellar was great! It was your typical classy wine bar environment- dim lighting, close seating (which I was not a fan of), and a bit loud. Outside of basically sitting on top of another person, I didn't mind it all that much. The food was amazing. We had a goat cheese truffle for our appetizer which was fantastic matched with a flowery honey sauce. Key Lime Caesar for a salad- AMAZING, I highly recommend. We both enjoyed stuffed chicken for dinner which was just the right portion size and absolutely filling. For dessert we enjoyed a napoleon and a chocolate mousse. I had a glass of Firestone wine with dinner- the waitress was absolutely wonderful helping me find the perfect wine to go with my dinner. I really want to go back and try the wine flights- I had never seen a wine flight quite like theirs before! Beer flights all the time, but never wine like the way Dusty's does it. Outside of the seating (get a reservation) and the price (which I understand), I really loved it. If you're looking for big portions, then this isn't your place. I had my wedding reception at Dusty's. We decided to get married kind of late and we wanted a small celebration with in-town friends and close family. Everything at Dusty's was superb. Service, the food, and the wine. My family still talks about their steak and all my friends loved the wine ( I believe one of them went back and bought a case of one of the wines they served at my wedding). My first visit to Dusty's Cellar today for lunch. Very nice building and retail area. The restaurant however fell a bit short. The ginger/carrot soup was good. I ordered their lobster roll and was disappointed. First off, the serving size was like a half a roll. Moreover, they must have run out of lobster because there was very little of it on the sandwich. We had a party of 5 on a Sat evening but nothing seemed available on OpenTable so I called. Explained that though we were 5, we had one guy on crutches who needed to put his leg up on a chair. They offered us around table for 6 - Wonderful! We were greeted by a couple hostesses and there were at least 2 bus boys who were very attentive with keeping our water glasses full. We ordered a couple martinis that were decent and a round of appetizers that were tasty. Here comes the first huge disappointment ... we ordered our main course that took FOREVER to show up. Everything was ice cold ... as though it had been sitting on a shelf for half an hour. Our rice accompaniment was hard it was so cold. We told the waitress who robotically took it all back to be reheated. Another 10 minutes goes by ... we got our same dishes back in 2-3 shifts, I suppose as it came out of the microwave. The plates were warm but food was only room temp this time. The last plate served was boiling hot. Oh well, we were pretty hungry so just ate it. Next big disappointment, we were celebrating a big birthday, the waitress was informed on several occasions and all she did for it was hand out a little plate of one brownie bite each. Our bill was $227 -at least a candle would have been nice. Summary: I think this place has a nice ambience and a creative menu but the management needs to train their servers properly. read more

I have eaten at Dusty's maybe 40 times. The service and food have always been excellent. Even when I just hit the store for wine, pastries, etc the manager always makes it a point to say hello. Dustys has two main dining rooms connected by a walkway and the walkway also connects to the Tap Room next door. The decor is in desparate need of updating. It kind of has an 80s feel to it. We had dinner here last Saturday and had an all around dismal experience. We were seated in a fairly empty banquet room with a couple of other diners because a large group had taken over most of the main dining room. We waited about 20 minutes before an obviously harried waitress took our drink order. After another long wait, we finally ordered.... and had another long wait. Then? Bloody chicken arrived. Yuk. The waitress did take it back and have it cooked more, but of course, that entailed another long wait. My husband's dinner was cold, and he was pretty turned off by the whole scenario. Oh. We made a reservation for Easter dinner and our experience was terribly disappointing. When making the reservation, it was never mentioned that they would be serving brunch all day, even into the dinner hour. When we were seated with a brunch menu we were quite surprised. Although not what we were expecting, we made the decision to just be flexible and make the most of it. Our water was filled and then we sat. There were only three tables seated in the restaurant, and yet we waited ten minutes before a waiter came to see if we'd like anything to drink. We inquired about the bar, as there was a steak on the menu which was our best bet for dinner food. He brought over a menu and said, "We have cocktails. I don't know if you can order them though. But you can probably get beer or wine." Then he walked away again. Assuming he was going to inquire about what we could order we waited some more. The point at which we got up and left, we'd been seated for twenty minutes and never ordered a thing. We've had many dinners at Dusty's and never once have ever considered leaving. Let alone on a holiday when reservations are hard to come by. We even had our wedding rehearsal dinner here. We do have the choice where to spend our money, and given the times, we are quite selective about where we do that. We prioritize our local businesses and establishments because we know their value in our community. Dusty's is a great addition to the Lansing Area. On one hand, they have a specialty food & wine store. They sell awesome cheeses, probably one of the best specialty wine selections in the area, amazing desserts by the piece, etc. Any time I need some food for a special occasion, they have come through for me! On the other great hand, they have a gourmet restaurant. I have probably been here 4-5 times for dinner and it has always been good. The food offerings are very creative and the quality is excellent. Not sure what all the hype is about for this place. I've been here on a few occasions, and every time it feels more disappointing. Tonight's service took 2 hours, and I'm not one to complain about slow service, especially for quality food, but this was excessive. When the food came (Korean beef brisket), it was so salty I couldn't finish it (I'm a smoker and heavy coffee drinker, I don't have taste buds). But all I tasted was salt, it literally burned in my mouth. I was that person taking gulps of water between every bite in every prototypical awkward dinner party movie scene. Yikes. This is proof that it's hard to judge restaurants, as everybody has their on and off days. I'm not quite sure if I would call the lunch I had an actual "off" day, since they seemed to defend what was lackluster instead of taking responsibility for it, but I'll go ahead to explain this lunch experience. The menu looked great. I had a hard time deciding between their Monte Cristo sandwich and their "Kobe" Burger. I didn't add the quotations, they did on their menu. And rightfully so, although they were contradictory. I'll get to that later. The server highly recommended the burger and also mentioned that the Monte Cristo was one of their most popular items. Luckily, my friend wanted in, so we ordered both to share and the server took our order. The food came. The most impressive part about this meal happens here - the chef portioned our sandwich and burger half and half, and had created makeshift plates for the each of us. I know this is NOT a difficult feat, but the extra step can be rare coming from a busy kitchen. I almost want to say this takes up the entire two star rating although I know that's a bit harsh... The "Kobe" Burger. Now, before I ordered the burger, I asked the server what "Kobe" in quotations actually meant. Excuse me if I sound like a snooty little shit at this point but she started explaining what Kobe beef actually was and I almost spit my water out. The audacity... just kidding (kind of)! I had to clarify that I was asking what the quotes meant and if it really WAS Kobe (especially since the burger was only priced at $9... first clue). She explained that it was 100% Kobe beef and that it had beautiful marbling (second clue). How in the hell does a ground beef burger show beautiful marbling... need I go on? Anyway, that should have been enough to stop me. The burger came. It was sad. It was served on a soft bun, a step above a Wendy's bun, which went VERY nicely with how low grade the burger patty was. It was sorely disappointing, as it was probably about a 1/4 lb or smaller, and the meat itself was nothing special and hard to distinguish from 84/16 ground chuck. I caught the server about a 1/3 way through and let her know that I was a bit disappointed - she was very apologetic and seemed to empathize with how sad the burger even looked but displayed defensiveness by explaining to me that they had just gotten a new Kobe beef distributer. So this batch must not be good... Oh well! She offered absolutely nothing in response except for the excuses. I was a bit surprised, as I would have expected Dusty's to at least have the courtesy to at least try to fix the issue, but unfortunately their one flighty waitress has represented their establishment as inconsistent and quite possibly, ignorant. The sandwich was ok. Not memorable. Especially since it came out barely warm. The bread became slightly stale due to it being served a few steps too late, which is unfortunate, since the egg dipped, cooked hot bread is one of the shining stars of a Monte Cristo. Obviously, the Kobe Burger experience really put me off. I still do enjoy Dusty's and will probably give their lunch one more shot. But I am still very curious as to what was REALLY in that Kobe patty... read more

Attended a wine tasting recently. For $20 I got to try 12 wines and have appetizers. It was a great opportunity to mingle and meet new people. There was a diverse crowd of all ages. They did a great job of describing the wines and making recommendations. It was such an overall poor experience. I struggled with how to start writing this review. We arrived and were seated by hostess and given one menu to share between the two of us. She nevere said anything to us, a theme that continued all might. 15 minutes or so later, we had ask somone if we could order, if had to ask about specials, we had to ask what was on tapand rhen waited some more for our waiter to show up to order. When he showed up, no greeting no introduction, nothing, i ordered a craft beer and my wife wanted to taste begore ordering hers, 5 plus minutes pass befor drink arrives - silently. We tell waiter to wait awhile my wife takes 30 seconds to taste and order. Time passes. We finally order from a limited menu, both in choice of food and price - 30+ for most entrees cept salad. We ordered cesar salad entrees with chicken. A long long wait andit arrives, looks good, served in a big bowl but not heaped. I explain this because person next to got the ceaser salad with chicken but not the entree size. Small bowl, heaping, quantity wise they looked about the same. Chicken was was so dry, parts of it were like chewing jerky.There were a couple of good things. Water guy was on it all night. We always had water topped off.and water guy went and found our waiter for us after another long wait to order a 2nd drink Lettuce was fresh. Cesar salad dressing was very good. Ok this is a difficult review to write. Dusty's is always packed with customers and offers a fun place to meet with friends for a beer. Additionally, the meals sound delicious on the menu and look wonderful when brought to your table. However, taste is another thing. How do you screw up a steak? Here is some advice.... medium rare is not "ice cold" in the center. Doesn't the head chef have a meat thermometer? The wine list is what I would expect from the local Olive Garden restaurant. My family has gone to Dusty's Cellar for dinner for over 10 years. We love it. No other restaurant in the Okemos/Williamston/Haslett/Holt area is at this caliber, and it probably rivals anything in East Lansing and Lansing as well. The staff is always exceptionally courteous and well organized. In 10 years, we've never had a disaster. The food is always excellent, though of course every chef has an off night. It's very rare that we're not all extremely impressed with our food. The wine and beer selection is great, and they do a good espresso or coffee as well. The goat cheese balls and key lime caesar salad are an especially big hit, and it's hard to force myself to order anything other than the turkey torta rustica, which has been my favorite dish all these years. The chocolate brownies with our check is always a nice treat at the end as well. Some of the reviews below are for Dusty's Tap Room, which is different than the cellar - more casual bar and grill. A friend and I went there for the food bank fundraiser of Restaurant Week. I have always heard great things about Dusty's, but have to say I was disappointed. The special of Restaurant week was a 4 course meal for $24.95. We had the Coconut Battered Shrimp with mango habernero chutney. This appetizer was very good and we both enjoyed it. We then had the Key Lime Caesar Salad. There was no key lime flavor to it and overall it was very bland. I had the Thai Penne Pasta for my entree. This was the best course of the meal and I enjoyed it very much. My friend had the rainbow trout. She did not enjoy it and said she had cooked better in her own home. The desserts were a disappointment for both of us. I had the chocolate mousse with Chantilly cream. It did not have much flavor and tasted of just regular chocolate pudding. My friend had the Napoleon with raspberry sauce. She did not like it at all and did not even finish it. At the beginning of the meal they served 3 dinner rolls for a table of 2 and poured olive oil on a plate. The rolls were flavorless. Other restaurants that I have been served the oil for bread dipping also included balsamic vinaigrette to mix. This did not. They seated us on the enclosed patio which was a nice atmosphere but the seats were uncomfortable. I do love the wine shop! I have always enjoyed my meals at Dusty's. I have lived in the area for 26 years and have never had a bad experience. I try to make a reservation so that I don't have to wait for a table when I am looking for a great dining experience. The wait staff always go above and beyond the norm as servers. I dine out a lot internationally, and have found Dusty's to compare to some of the best restaurants in NYC, San Fran, Paris, and Rome. It's the best you can get in a little town like Okemos. We chose this place to get a fancier meal in the Lansing area. It has a very cool ambiance and environment. We were greeted promptly by the host and even though we were an hour early to our reservation, they sat is right away! We started of with two drinks, I got a local beer, which was fabulous. My date got an old fashioned, and me being a bartender I knew that when it arrived it was going to be pretty bad. In short it tasted like water downed whiskey. We got the cheese fondue for an appetizer, and the bread was stale and I think they should offer a more selection of fruits and veggies to dip and not just bread. My boyfriend and I recently enjoyed an excellent night out at Dusty's Cellar, and I'm looking forward to coming back. I made reservations for a Saturday evening about 24 hours in advance. We arrived about 10 minutes before our reservation and were seated promptly. Our waitress was attentive without being pushy. She checked back to make sure I enjoyed the wine she recommended for me, and carefully timed our meals to arrive at an appropriate interval following the drinks and appetizer we ordered first. The cheese plate was a wonderful accompaniment for my wine (Dusty's has an inimitable selection of Michigan wines) and my boyfriend's Scotch flight. Our salads came next - fresh, interesting and well-dressed. Both of our meals were perfectly portioned and delicious. I had coconut shrimp and he had a chicken dish. Both were served with crisp, in-season vegetables. We had no room for dessert, but our waitress brought us each a one-bite-brownie with the check. I agree with some other reviewers that the casual ambiance is at odds with the fine cuisine and high prices; the acoustics leave much to be desired and the dining area is more warehousey than intimate. It's possible the patio would be better if you're seeking quiet conversation. I'm hoping to try the patio the next time I go -which I hope will be soon, since overall, I had a great experience dining at Dusty's. read more

Despite some critical reviews here, we thought we'd try it as we hadn't been there for years--and were really glad we did. The salads were included in the price of the meal, and I've had similar bleu cheese wedge salads for $7 or $8 other places. That means that the Thai pasta dish with chicken that I ordered was very reasonable at $21. And both the salad and the pasta were delicious. It was so generous a portion, I wasn't able to finish it. My husband had the tournedos of beef, which he ordered extremely rare. He was thrilled to find a chef who really knows rare. He loved the beef and has been talking about going back soon. Our friends enjoyed their dinners very much, too, including the wife who also had the tournedos, but she ordered hers cooked well-done, and it was. When we had no room for dessert, the waitress brought a little plate of chocolate fudge brownies (no charge) that was the perfect ending. Our waitress was excellent. Ok, if you want a fine classy meal in the greater Lansing area this is the place to go. They have a great wine and scotch selection, and great service staff. The only reason I do not give them five stars is because of the food. It is honestly a gamble, considering the price you pay. That being said everything is usually good but with the price I am surprised with how bland some of their dishes can be, though it is really only the main dishes because every other dish I have had there has been amazing. We grew up in the area and had never been to Dusty's, so decided to give it a try. With a price of $25 to $30 an entree, I expect the food should be excellent. We were disappointed. A friend had a steak, which had no flavor. The coconut shrimp were not seasoned, as well as the rest that was on the plate. At 7pm, they were out of creme brulee, so the waitress recommended a chocolate dessert, which I thought was similar to a lava cake, but turned out to be a hard cookie with filling. Very dissapointing for a birthday dessert. Very overpriced for what you get and very under seasoned food, which is a basic skill. Had a good time, otherwise, but won't be returning. read more

Food was incredible. Very upscale though. You don't have to be extremely dressed up, but expect an upscale style of dinning. Your meal will be paced very slow almost by intention (or because the staff is pretty old). The last time I was there for lunch the average age was probably about 57. This place is upscale in a casual environment. They take reservations and I highly recommend making them. We were a walk in and got the last open table in the enclosed patio at 6pm on a Friday. We started the evening with the sample platter and some fondue. The fondue was intoxicating....we just could not stop eating it throughout the meal. One person had the torta and loved it but could not finish it. Warning it is large. I had the penne pasta with the jerk crumbles. It was surprisingly good. We were way too full for dessert. I will have to make sure I save room in my next visit. Maybe I will just do the fondue and then dessert....think about it! The perfect combo of salt, fat and sugar! We were seated right away, however, after waiting for 25 minutes for a waiter we ended up walking out. There were 3 other tables occupied on the enclosed patio where we were, 1 of which already had food and yet we didn't even get a hello, I'll be right with you from anyone.
