They have completed several projects for me and they have always done a wonderful job.

Dutch barn is a crazy company, Child and Angie are both the worst poeple to deal with. I paid this company fully because they had a good start. But midway they made sure they got paid fully and stopped showing up at the project site, no call, no show, they refuse to pickup call. Lawyer are not helping because. Its a waste of time, they already have 26 litigations.. my project was half way ehen they stopped showing up. Please poeple. I wish I could give negative stars because this company is nothing but lip service and liars. They make sure they get all their money but leave you for over a month with zero work being done. You can try calling but they either don't pick up or say they'll look into it and never call you back. I was told the job would take 2 weeks and it's been over a month and nothing has been completed. They couldn't even get the permit done without my help. Something they should know how to do. I've been told SO many times the crew is coming and no one shows up. Run!! We signed a contract with Dutch Barn a year ago and gave them a significant deposit. 7 months later we cancelled the contract because they were unable to obtain a building permit from the Village of Lake Forest. They signed an agreement to return $15,000 of our deposit but have refused to do it! Big mistake going with Dutch Barn. Don't do it!!!! read more

They are horrible. I am getting an in-ground pool installed and have paid the required 60% up to this point. 8 weeks in all I have is a big hole in my yard. First, they blamed the rain. Then they blamed the supplies not being in. I was told they would start back working today. The workers showed up and left within 10 mins. When asked why they left they stated they went to the wrong house. They can't even tell me when they will be here. The project manager is impossible to get in contact with and is only heard from when he wants to collect your checks. I wish I would have read the other reviews prior to hiring them. They are very accurate as I am going through the exact same thing. I will be contacting the BBB and filing a complaint. This is ridiculous! read more

So I reached out to this company for an estimate on re-doing my patio with pavers. Getting someone to come out was no problem. The problem came with follow thru. After almost a week had passed since I was told I would get the estimate I still hadn't heard anything. I checked my email, checked my spam folder just in case, certainty didn't get a call or a text - nothing. So I followed up with a call. I got voice mail. I left a message with my name, number, the date their representative had come out, my property address. I asked if someone could call back with an estimate. We're now an additional week out and still no call/text/email. Needless to day I've been left very disappointed by this company and could not recommend them. Edit: in their reply to my review the business has effectively called me a liar. The truth is their designer came out on 6.19 NOT 6.26. I was at work, in court on 6.26 so I could not possibly have met with their designer that day. I did meet with her on 6.19, a court holiday and the only day I've been off and home during the day in the last few weeks. Sorry. And I was never told there would be a 2 week wait for an estimate....hmmmm. read more

From the moment my project broke ground in May 2024, it has been a disaster. We hired Dutch Barn to install a pool, patio and deck. Nothing is fully complete yet. The deck isn't even started. They dug the hole for the pool in May 2024 and it sat basically untouched for months after that. I can rarely get responses to questions. When I do get a response, it goes something like "we'll have someone on site next week" or "we're sorry for the delays". Those responses are only good enough to get someone to show up for one day and then we don't see anyone for weeks at a time. We are now going on 13 months for a project that was quoted at 3 months. There is no excuse that can be made to justify this project taking this long. During the months of the year that weather would allow them to work, Dutch Barn has averaged 1 day on site per week. The only explanation I can think of is that they don't have enough labor to complete the jobs they take on. On top of the unreasonable delays and complete lack of any accountability, I am now getting calls from the village to tell me that the last permit we're waiting on has actually been approved for over 6 weeks and they're just waiting on payment from Dutch Barn. I've been told repeatedly that the village is holding up the issuance of the permit. Operating a business in this manner should be illegal. They are taking advantage of customers that pay large deposits prior to work being completed. This company has stolen time from my family that we could have been enjoying our backyard. I see from other reviews that I am not the only one. This has been the most frustrating experience I have ever had. read more

Please think twice. We are currently contracted with DB on a larger project that includes a pool, landscaping, and outdoor kitchen and firepit. This has been one of the most frustrating projects that we ever been involved in - and given the value of the financial commitment (+$150k), you would expect much better service and follow through on promises. Emails and texts go unanswered, promised timelines come and go, but you better believe they want to get paid right on time. They structure their contracts so that they get 90% of payment before 50% of the work is complete, so you basically have zero leverage and are left to beg and plead for progress to continue. They will come up with every excuse in the book - supplier delays, rain, crews calling off sick, etc., it's ridiculous and BS. Their crews are hardworking migrants who would work evening and weekends if needed. We had sprinklers installed by a different company and they stuck to their schedule working in mud through rain. The only positives are their design specialists Kellie and Angie, and their laborers. The project manager (James) and finance guy (Sean) only seem to respond to every 5th chaser. When we asked to speak to the owner (several times), we are ignored. I don't think the owner really cares to be honest. My guess is they will respond to this review by blaming us for making some minor design changes, which we have, but they were minor and would not have kept this project open since July 1, which is when they started with the pool. the kitchen was started in mid-August, the line to the firepit was done in August. No start yet on seeding the lawn. Here are some pictures so that you can judge for yourself. If I can, I will update this review every week to show you how little progress is made. If you want to come visit the project yourself, message me and I'll gladly to give you the address so you can judge for yourself. There is still time for Dutch Barns to complete this project and influence this review in a positive way. When they actually finish a phase, it does look good, but it's like pulling teeth to get them to come out and work. They have come out to clean the pool 5 times which we appreciate but we just want this thing done already so we can enjoy our back patio. We made the mistake of hiring Dutch Barn for our pool and spill-in spa after their designer promised us it shouldn't take more than four to six weeks to finish. They dug us up in September of 2023 and secured 50% of their money and ghosted us after that. My husband called them countless times and they never answer or return his calls. Only way he can talk to someone is for him to take time out of his busy schedule and go to their business and demand someone to talk to because they all hide because no one wants to explain their work ethics especially the owner Courtney. My husband was promised they will come out in March to continue project and didn't show up until end of May and that's with him constantly leaving them messages. When they finally showed up, they only did the few things that will get them to their 95% payment per contract. Shawn calls and demands payment for work that hasn't been completed and has the nerve to say we signed a generic contract and the new one they're using now states otherwise. Most absurd thing I've ever heard. They secured 95% payment and had 40% of the work complete. The crew comes out once or twice a week and stand around more than they work. Some weeks they don't show up at all. When they finally did the liner, it was very poorly installed. It is bulging in all corners and the amount of folds are horrible. They told us that issue would resolve when the pool water heater is on and will stretch to fit. Which was a lie. That didn't fix the issue. We've asked them to install the automatic pool cover to protect the liner from accidentally rupturing and they kept telling my husband it's ordered and will be here in four weeks. Their four weeks became a constant excuse. The four weeks became months and months with no cover. Our neighbor had the same pool installed by a different pool builder in the area in less than a month which was very frustrating to see. Our permit ended up expiring after a year and there was still no urgency to finish the job. We ended up hiring a different company to finish the job and had to pay thousands of dollars more than anticipated because of their lack of care. We have our fingers crossed that the liner doesn't rupture from the ice buildup in the pool over the winter and we will not know if the spa is actually working properly until next summer. Unfortunately it was after my husband signed the contract is when I saw bad reviews went up and saw that they had ongoing lawsuits against them. I can honestly say that Dutch Barn is the most unprofessional, dishonest nightmare company that we've ever dealt with. The stress level they caused us was unbelievable. I'm very shocked they're still in business with the way they treat people. Unfortunately we learned the hard way. Choose wisely and pick a reputable company if you're considering a pool build. We're definitely considering suing them for the poor build and the thousands lost. read more

While the quality of work was great, the customer service needs some serious improvements. For what was supposed to be a three week job turned into over three months. There was never any communication regarding delays nor any empathy for the inconvenience. As of recent we have gotten a number of letters in the mail from vendors they used to supply material for the work. We have paid our job in full yet these vendors are threatening to put a lien on our home because Dutch barn has failed to pay them! It is just unacceptable behavior to display as a professional company. Again, I'll give them the credit of good work, but I would not recommend to friends and family due to the stress and headaches that come along with it. read more

I really want to give DB a top review but can't yet just yet in good conscience. I like their people individually. Their designer is very talented. Their staff are polite and professional when you talk to them. I appreciate the company's vision to elevate pool and backyard projects. My complaint is the lack of communication and time to completion. It needs to be improved. If someone asked me if I'd recommend them, I'd hesitate. I can't vouch for the process and not entirely confident the pool will be in perfect working order as at the moment it isn't. We started this project early June this year with a completion date of Oct 1. We are now at the end of Nov and are not done yet. We have been given no certainly when the final touches will be made - we're waiting for a pool cover, fire bowls, to reconfigure the pools plumbing because the water falls and spillover to not operate the way they should, and some final touches on paving. I hope all works out well as some of the other reviews seem to have had issues with project completion. I feel it is important to let people know what a big pool project entails and some of the issues you may run into. If it all works out, I will still caution people to brace themselves for a long haul project despite of promises of a quick and easy process. I wish I had talked to more previous customers to understand how the process will work. It seems like it shouldn't take long but it does. My biggest complaint is the lack of transparency about what's going on. Apparently the pool covers are on back order but that has never been officially communicated to us. Despite several emails asking about status the question has always been evaded. I have no evidence that is a true statement about the back order. It would shed light on why it's taking so long though. When I have full completion, I'm happy to give an update. I would love nothing more than to give a stellar review here as I'd like to see DB succeed in their business. I wouldn't necessarily steer people away from their work as when they complete work it looks beautiful. They just need some improvement in meeting customers expectations and providing updates for their projects. read more

I got a pool installed. They drove over our septic mound causing "stuff" to come out. They wont repair it. Also - now they will not respond! During the install they just showed up when they wanted. We had no communication throughout the project. The pool turned out nice. The smell that we now have to deal with every day is not nice, as are all of the repair costs. We had Dutch Barn put in our pool. Let me start by telling you it is not an easy or stress free process. Your backyard will look like a bomb went off during the entire installation. But Dutch Barn did a great job of helping us keeping our wits about us. It wasn't easy, but by the time it was done, we ended up with a backyard that resembles a resort. If you go with them, after reading this review, your the idiot. At quote, 4-6 weeks installation. After observing some major issues with Kellie and their project team we went to cancel. Several lies about costs, forced us not to cancel. Afterwards, told us 8-12 weeks for completion. We are now in week 13. Had to spend another $2K because Kellie is incompetent and has no clue about local codes. We are long time customers, so this is not your one angry customer out of the blue. From start to finish, my patio paver job took 3 months to complete. Initially, heavy rains/weather were to blame but then I realized they just kept pushing me back for as long as I would tolerate it. Not once did they contact ME for an installation date. I had to contact them. It was only when I demanded an installation date and threaten to take my business elsewhere, did I get their attention and a true installation date. They screwed up the paver type/colors ( I caught the error and stopped them from installing the wrong ones), and they left a huge 5 inch muddy trench around the patio, even though I was initially promised all grass would be fixed after they were done. To top it off, they sent me an invoice saying I owed more money yet I had already paid in full. No attention to detail, poor communication, disorganized employees. I will never use them again and I will discourage friends and family, as well. read more

I just moved to Orland Park, and was going to use this company for my front yard. Price was reasonable, the phone staff was polite and I really did not want anything that difficult, just some flowers, and a clean up of the rocks in the front yard and mulch to be placed instead. I was eager to have the work done and was willing to sign a contract and get started. That's when I ran into a problem, by the name of Tina, a "designer" at Dutch Barn. I had expressed, very politely, over the course of several emails, which flowers I was looking to use as we re-landscaped our front yard. Tina made a few suggestions about using other flowers in areas I didn't want, and when I very politely told her that I would prefer the flowers I had originally asked for, she suddenly turned rude and harsh. This is the exact email, verbatim, that she sent as a response after I had told her I'd like to stick with my flower choices: "Have you seen our website? Annabelles where? Too large for under trees. Lilacs are shrubs (4-5' high) Not trees Scarlet is dark red If you to want to create your own design then we probably aren't the right landscape company for you." ------ Had I seen the website? Yes. Of course. That's how I contacted them. And guess what the website says, verbatim: "Envision the residential landscaping ideas that our licensed landscape architect and design team can create for your home." So when they use the word, "CREATE", I guess that doesn't include the paying customer's personal preferences. Apparently this statement means: "We will tell you what to do you with your landscaping, and if you don't like the idea of not picking your plants or the location of where we will put them, then tough, go somewhere else." What a joke. I'm about to sign on to pay a couple thousand dollars and because I want to pick the flowers that will sit in front of MY home, I get a snotty email like that? My advice to you, if you're like every other person out there and want to have some say of what your landscaping looks like - Go somewhere else. I'd gladly pay a little more to not have to deal with someone like Tina. read more

Wish I could give them zero stars. First, you need to know that some reviews on here are employees. Kevin? He's in charge of their pool cleaning division. He "opened" my pool in April and we found it was stained from their neglect and he tried one thing to remedy it and never came back. It's almost JULY now. We had to handle it and pay for it ourselves even though this is part of what we paid for when we put in the pool. They refused to clean it before it was closed last year. Who installs a pool and puts it away dirty? Dutch Barn does. Let's talk about the pool. We had to oversee the entire process. Zero communication unless it was initiated by us. They wanted to start work without a permit.. that was a HUGE red flag to us. We had to keep a punch list, and update the team weekly. Almost a year later we STILL have things not complete. But we paid every dime even though things weren't complete and that was a GIANT mistake on my part. The owner, Courtney, well he refused to speak to us after he made the sale. When issues arose he was unavailable or on vacation... LOTS of vacations. His employees told us "he pays us to deal with customer problems". Wow that's reassuring when you're spending 100k+ and there's an issue. My latest issue is my bushes we paid through the nose for that are dead or dying. In the spring they were "waiting for their stock" to replace them... now there's plenty on their lot. Now it's "in the fall, if needed". What? We have a contract and a warranty and none of that seems to matter. I've kept quiet for almost a year hoping they would make things right but I'm over it. I should have known when not a single neighbor who used them for their pool would give them a recommendation. read more

I had a beautiful paver patio and planter wall built 3 years ago and was very pleased with Tina and her crew. I contacted them a few weeks ago to do some touch up work where they sent a designer named Sue. She was a brash woman that repeatedly said "I don't know'' when asked about areas that needed attention, including a separation at the corner of the wall. They did not offer a second visit from a non-designer to address the area that was more than a minor repair, but estimated the work to be $800.00. I contacted the owner who came out with a lack of concern to the separation of the wall stating "I'd just leave it alone". He offered to do the minor work for $100.00, sometime in next few months. I then contacted Tepa Landscaping in Lockport, il. who did ALL the work needed for $150.00 within a weeks time. It looks GREAT ! Seems things have changed at Dutch Barn, and not for the better. Tina has left them, too. Beware of contractors that don't wish to earn repeat business. read more

Ok the owners name is Al and he is a nice guy but this is his hobby he is a very very rich man who is worth around 100 million dollars ! Yes thats correct he had a article in the Chicago Tribune about him and his huge real-estate deals .The issue with Al is he has no supervision of his workers and the quality shows. I had a $40,000 complete landscape job done a few years ago and my paver drive way is sinking and needs to be replaced we also told him no large tree and the tree has grown higher then are house .Al is a nice guy but this is just his hobby . read more
