Duval's truly exceeded my expectations! From the moment we arrived, the entire staff, from the host to our server, made us feel welcome and went above and beyond to provide outstanding service. I ordered the lump crab cake with spiced lemon remoulade. It was packed with fresh crab with very little filler. Delicious! We also tried Duval's award winning shrimp signature Po' Boy served on a baguette with napa cabbage, tomato, and chipotle remoulade. It was outstanding! The clam chowder was rich, creamy and one of the best I've had outside of New England. The restaurant is beautiful, the seafood is off the boat fresh, and the people who work there truly make the experience special. Kelly D. reached out via a review platform but when I actually reached out and wrote to her email, she never bothered to reply to my experience at all. Recently, I was invited to a company lunch last week with my law firm and I politely declined because of that lack of care. The rub: Jennifer was kind and full of grace while we had issues with our meal. The food was sub par unfortunately and did not taste great. We picked this restaurant for the great reviews and wanted to celebrate our anniversary but Duval's disappointed. The Calamari was not fresh, it was very chewy and every piece was tough as boots. It was difficult to eat as an appetizer. My girls steak was ordered medium rare, looked like it was more medium when cut into. It certainly needed the demi glaze because it was not seasoned at all, flavorless and a very dry filet. I ordered the lobster Mac and cheese. Half a tail and somehow I swallowed a piece of shell that was mixed into the pasta and got lodged in my throat. All in all, disappointed with the food. I popped in here for a quick lunch and sat at the bar. The bartender was really nice and chatty. The menu is a little expensive so I went the Tuna Poke which was still about $19 and very filling. Mixed with the Ahi was onions, cucumbers, bell peppers. jalapenos, sweet chili sauce, with a side of corn tortilla chips which you could use to scoop up the poke to eat. We had lunch at Duval's Fresh. Local Seafood, and the entire experience was excellent. I ordered the grilled grouper with a wedge salad, which was fresh and perfectly prepared. Another person in our party had the oyster po' boy, and it was just as good. Our server, Chad, truly made the meal special. He recommended a great wine pairing and topped it off with an amazing dessert--bread pudding--which was the perfect way to finish the meal. We did not have a reservation, but they were able to fit us in. We were very lucky we sat outside. It was cold, but they were so accommodating and turned on a couple of heaters. Our server was so attentive, and hundred percent accuracy on our order orders. We had salmon, the grouper he recommended highly the cod and the filet mignon and all of us loved it. Started with a seafood appetizer and ended with three desserts of which nothing was left. Highly recommend the bread pudding which normally I don't go for, but it was amazing. I started heading to a sushi spot, but right next to it I noticed Duval with signs saying "#1" and "Best Seafood," so I decided to give it a try instead. I was STARVING upon arrival so I ended up quickly ordering a cup of clam chowder, and I'm so glad I did because we sat for probably an hour before our mains arrived. Blueberry Mojito (4/5) - This mojito was your typical rum and mint cocktail, except it also included muddled blueberries. Lump Crab Cake (5/5) - This appetizer was my favorite part of my meal. The crab cake was substantial and the remoulade paired well with the lump crab. Seafood Bouillabaisse (2/5) - I was underwhelmed by the seafood bouillabaisse. There was ample seafood included with the entree but broth could have used more flavor. For this review, I had to think of words to describe the experience and meal I had here... the words saturation and excessive come to mind. The lighting was very bright for an evening dinner. I understand the clientele is generally older and needs larger font and brighter lighting, but it was quite bright inside. The Caesar salad was saturated with dressing. I do like dressing but this was a lot, a the lettuce was generally on the whiter side compared to the greener... must've been my luck to get the bottom of the romaine shuck. Oh shucks. My first trip to Sarasota for the opera as well as the local seafood. During my short stay I've eaten at Owen's and Walt's, two places popular with locals but lacking in ambience. I came to Duval's twice, for happy hour and dinner, both were excellent, as was the service. * half sandwich oyster po boy with fries $11 -- the sando was great but the fries were amazing (and I usually don't eat fries except at Mickey D's.) * mushroom stuffed with shrimp and crab $11 -- three different textures melding together in perfect harmony, like the trio from act one of Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro", currently playing at the opera down the street. * bouillabaisse $44 -- a culinary masterpiece and gastronomical delight. The fish filet (snapper?) was perfectly poached and not overcooked, and the shellfish (mussels, shrimp, lobster tail, calamari) were all cooked to perfection.
