I have been here a couple of mimes, once very recently. Overall we were satisfied with our visit. To begin with, despite it also being a busy gas station and convenience store, with m wife's mobility issues we didn't have to park far away or have me drop her off. The server was friendly and attentive, so though she forgot to bring a couple of small items we requested, it was easily fixed. This seems to be one of those basic American style restaurants: not with a broad or imaginative selection, nor one that I'll knock your socks off, but rather with basic food offerings of middling quality. For example, my cheeseburger and onion ring were fine, but not such that I would bring them up later when talking to a friend about restaurants in general. My wife ordered the chef salad, and it was generous, but it took up so much room on the oval plate that she risked pushing items onto the table with every bite. Bringing a second plate from the start would have been a good idea, but she fixed it by asking early for a box to bring some home, as she knew she wouldn't be able to finish it anyway. She was pleased that there was no extra charge for the packet of guacamole she requested. Sometimes it seems places up charge for every little thing. Speaking of prices, they seem elevated for what they offer, but when I thought about it, it felt high compared to what we were paying pre-inflation a year or two ago, not compared to other restaurants. So it is dependable enough so I would be willing to go back (if they are like smaller Dysarts branches they must have good pizza) but it will not be a destination restaurant for us. read more

Came north for a concert last night. It was great (too). Couldn't leave without introducing my granddaughter to Dysart's. I mean...that just wouldn't be right. Breakfast was delish. I had the Black Bear Omelet - 3 eggs! Shaved steak, peppers, onions and provolone. Enough to take some home. She had the Traditional McRuth - home made bread, egg, sausage patty. We're definitely glad we trusted Yelp on this one! Everything was amazing. It's a year and a half later and we still talk about this meal. Don't be put off by the fact that this is a truck stop - it's so much more. All of the breads and baked goods are homemade. Get a whole smorgasbord. We didn't drink because we were still on the road, but they do have beer (including local brews) available (maybe a full bar, but I can't remember). We had the hot Thanksgiving sandwich with fries & beans and the blueberry shortcake French toast platter. My partner is usually better about sharing, but her sandwich was so good that she only let me have a couple bites. And, my goodness, those were the best baked beans I have ever had. We even bought some yellow eye beans to try and recreate them at home. My blueberry shortcake French toast was outstanding as well. Real Maine wild blueberries and I'm glad I took the advice of the server to go with this because the bread having blueberries in it as well brought it to the next level. All the "platter" accoutrements were also well-prepared. We also grabbed a whoopie pie (my partner hadn't had one before!) and a blueberry pie to bring home to our families (somehow it did survive). Never had a problem at this location before, even when extremely busy. That said, today, it was not very busy, and yet it seemed that staff was struggling to get parties seated, and the kitchen was struggling to get food out on time. Furthermore, several items we ordered were 86'd and our server was not told until we had already put our orders in. When I received my "Dave's Famous Hash", the hash was dry and overly salty, the hash browns (home fries were 86'd) were oily, and the beans were undercooked and the sauce wasn't thickened properly, so there was very little flavor and the texture was unpleasant. It seems like they had multiple callouts so I feel bad for the wait staff. That said, this particular experience was unacceptable and I hope the issues that caused it are quickly remedied. read more

Looking for a hearty breakfast? Dysart's has you covered. This place shared real estate with a Citgo gas station but don't let that fool you, it's a legit dining experience. The decor is pretty cool too with antique cars, snowmobiles and canoes peppering the dining room. I had Dave's Hash which was by far the best corned beef hash I had this trip, homemade and corned beef forward. The accompanying beans were tasty but not overly sweet and grilled biscuits are the way to go. Others in the party had the McRuth, a breakfast sandwich made of French toast, the breakfast meat of your choice and an egg. Must have been good as it disappeared at record speed. We stopped by Dysart's because I had heard it was a famous trucking stop and I was hungry. They had chicken pot pie ($13) - my favorite! We were served brioche bread with butter and the chicken pot pie came with two sides (we chose broccoli and the deluxe side of vegetable soup for an extra $2 charge). DO NOT BE FOOLED! This is NOT the restaurant in Hermon, ME. Took my daughter here thinking the food would have been close to the one in Hermon. We were sadly mistaken. The food wasn't good at all. I ordered a burger that was very dry. The fries were cold and soggy. My daughter got a hot dog with Mac & Cheese. The Mac & Cheese was ok, but as she put it, it tasted like it was like kraft mac & cheese (boxed). The hot dog was just ok. seemed like a cheap hot dog that you can buy a big package at Walmart. Found this gem on Yelp! Imagine that. When driving up and seeing it's attached to a gas station, I thought, really? But the huge busy parking lot and their very cool enclosed patio in the back started changing my mind. The restaurant was very inviting and packed with people eating delicious looking food. The menu has tons of excellent options too. I had to pick one! Tough choice. Service was quick and friendly. Great coffee. I'm eating low carb so I ordered the Black Bear omelette- shaved beef, veggies & cheese. I took the huge biscuit for my friend. And they let me sub sliced tomato's for my potatoes. Yum! We were told to wait by some young adults who were clearly annoyed with having to be at work. Asked them if the wait was 15 minutes. Said yes then gave us a table in 4 minutes for eight people for the four of us. Gave us all breakfast menus at 12.30pm. Just disengaged and unhappy. Wasn't even busy. Dysarts is always like this which is why I only go when others are set on it. My food was cold and unseasoned. Onion rings were room temperature. Not one was even a little warm. The Black Bear steak and cheese was bland, wasn't cooked with any salt and pepper, hardly had any cheese, and the onions and mushrooms weren't cooked with any salt and pepper. Food has to be seasoned before or while it's cooking. I can get a steak and cheese at a gas station better than what I had today. Why complain to a staff member? So I could wait even longer for more food that the cooks are angry they have to remake? I put s&p on it and ate. Just was really disappointed. Server was friendly but took a while for the food to come out and it wasn't hot. Run food as soon as it's ready. Season your food. This was our first meal after landing in Bangor, and I was really excited, since Dysart's is a popular chain up here. Although I love truck stops and diners and really enjoyed the decor and atmosphere here, I was not impressed with the food. I tried the Turkey Sandwich, Chilli Cheese Fries, and Chicken Pot Pie. The sandwich was better than the pie, but both certainly had something missing and the pie was almost like soup with not enough meat or filling. I had the Dave's favorite. corned beef hash and eggs were dry, toast was burnt and home fries tasted extremely weird. it seems to me that more effort could be made to make the breakfast taste better. My wife had the biscuits and gravy with 2 eggs, same thing with the eggs, dry. The gravy compared to a few years ago was essentially water flavored with small bits of sausage. There doesn't seem to be much effort to make the food edible. We won't be visiting again. When I can make better food than where I choose to spend $33 dollars for breakfast, that certainty in my mind speaks volumes to quality. read more

Solid 3.5 stars. Reminiscent of a Howard Johnsons, this is more than just a truck stop. A staple in Maine know for their milkshakes and breakfast, this local destination is a must stop. Their hash is the reason for this review. It is better than bacon. The coffee is typical diner coffee but their corned beef hash was enough for me to give this place a worthy review. I am not a hash fan normally but the way the menu described it, I couldn't turn it down. A really nice crunch on the outside, not too greasy and nicely diced potatoes and onions. After being seated, as we had to wait a few minutes, for the hostess to come, to seat us, and several servers passed by us, with no communication from them, that someone would be with us, shortly. Ordered a classic breakfast and a pancake breakfast, I asked for my bacon and home fries, crispy, which they were not, not sure if she asked them to be, or never did. Could not eat them. The pancakes were slightly burnt, and we asked for an extra plate, to put some of the pancakes aside, to be take home, but she never brought the plate. If our server was extremely busy, I could see, her forgetting some of our requests. But not impressed, with the service. Will not go out our way, to visit this location. read more

It feels like a nice family business that has just been growing for years and years. It feel slightly franchised now, but it still has a lot of character in the way they decorate and hang things from the ceilings. I have only been twice, but I had a great time. I had to try the "famous" buttery flakey crust of their pot pies and I was not disappointed. My sister could not stop quoting the commercial, "buttery crispy flakes" although I believe the commercial was at the Dysart's on the other side of town. I get that it's Sunday morning, I get that it's busy, I get that there's a lot going on around Bangor maybe bringing in an even bugger crowd than usual, but keeping groups waiting 45 minutes or more, especially when there are more open tables than groups in line, while the folks at the hostess station sit and gab and or look blankly at everyone, and not going around telling everyone why this is? Obnoxious. If the kitchen's backed up, if the servers are understaffed, if there are shortages, whatever... at least tell everyone so we know what the deal is. This is supposed to be the best breakfast place around here. But don't have super high expectations. Food is good but if you are not from around here you probably had better, much better. Coffee is average cheap coffee. Omelettes are good, but nothing special. After all the reviews I read the Blueberry pancakes were a let down... they do not have enough blueberries. This is Maine! They should have more than a dozen tinny berries in each pancake! I had to add blueberry sauce and real maple syrup to get them to an expectable level. The corned beef hash had good flavor but was very dry for my liking, and also came out cold. Was I there on a day the cook was off his game? I don't know, but I had much higher expectations based on the reviews. Waitress was a bit slow but nice, the hostess on the other hand was pretty crabby ... seemed like she was having a bad day. The place had a 15-20 min by 9 am on a Sunday. As we were leaving around 10, the wait time was up to 45 minutes. I hear there's a bagel place that's great for breakfast, I'll give that a try next time I'm in town. read more
