I had jewelry from several estates over the years and needed to understand what jewelry was real and what was costume. I made an appointment via email and they were very helpful in letting me know the status of each piece of jewelry. I was a little afraid that I would be looked down on as I was not sure if any of it had any value. I'm updating this review to respond to the owners response. In absolutely NO WAY was anyone offering assistance. He was incredibly dismissive, did NOT offer any information AT ALL, and again implied that the ring came from a dishonest place. There was no information on where we could go. There was no information on what the ring might be worth. There was no information whatsoever. I stand by my original review, and no owner response will make me feel differently (and based on the other reviews of this place, this is a pretty average feeling of people who come in here) We took our business elsewhere and were treated with respect. Learn how to treat people like humans and not like scum and you'll stop getting bad reviews. Original review: The gentleman who took a look at my mothers engagement ring that we brought in with the purpose of selling was incredibly judgmental and almost implied that she stole the ring because she wasn't comfortable giving a back story. It's one thing to not be interested in buying, it's another to be rude about it. This is such a classic and classy jewelry store. Very old school, with the finest quality items, and a huge selection of wonderful designers without feeling too fancy for common folk. I am especially fond of the estate section, displayed by designer. There is so much back stock, so if you don't see something that is exactly what you are looking for, definitely ask! Quite rude indeed! I walked in looking for an appraisal and was ignored by 6 associates for several awkward minutes before a younger associate made eye contact to ask "Yes?" He called over an older not-so-gentle man who took one long look at me, a glance at my necklace, a longer look at me and (!) laughed, saying it wasn't worth the cost of appraisal. Personally I'd think anyone would need to at least look at the jewelry in question but amazingly he was able to determine it's worth by checking out my sassy asymmetrical haircut. What a pro! He seemed quite uninterested in the origin of the pearls or any proof of their veracity so I am very uninterested in spending money here. If your time is likewise too valuable to spend with rude merchants I'd suggest looking elsewhere - politeness doesn't cost a thing! read more

First off- I have been going to EB Horn for over 10 years. I am a watch collector and frequently bring in high-end watches to get leather straps, etc if I don't like the bracelet or just due to the changing of the seasons and wanting to switch things up. Today, I brought in a 1974 Rolex DateJust which I had just received back from service (serviced BY Rolex RSC Dallas). I showed the watch to the gentleman who repairs watch straps and told him I needed a few more links for the watch but that I could just put it on a leather strap and get the links somewhere else (he suggested Long's). He then took a look at the bracelet through his loupe and sneered at me saying that the bracelet was fake. What? I have been collecting watches for 10+ years. I specialize (and am known to specialize) in high-end watches from the early 1950's through the 1980's (vintage). I have written publish articles, moderated web forums, and been involved in numerous NAWCC trade shows and events. I calmly informed him that Rolex had, in fact, made folded link jubilee bracelets for years. Google "Rolex 6251H" - that's the part number and they are a part of history. This gentlemen chuckled a bit and said "no, a Rolex bracelet should have a screwed in pin and be much heavier...I should know, I used to work for a dealer". How! How did you work for a dealer and not know the very products that the dealership had sold?! The DateJust was produced for nearly 20 YEARS with a folded link Jubilee bracelet. Mine is in perfect condition with every piece of paper from service going back to the 1970s - and you tell ME that the item I'm bringing in which I am certified to appraise for insurance purposes, mind you, is FAKE? Absolutely never again- I would rather buy a leather strap from anyone at 333 Washington St than this place. Stay far, far away if you want to be treated with even a modicum of respect. read more

I went to EB Horn to resize my engagement ring before my wedding. I wanted to take it up a size to wear it on my right hand. They told me that my ring also needed repair, as one of the bezels had a crack. I left it for repairs, and called back a week later to pick it up (right before my wedding). When I called, they told me they didn't have it. Couldn't find it. I have two last names, and I gave them both. It took them a long time to find it and the way they spoke to me about having potentially lost my engagement ring the week before my wedding was pretty poor. In any case, they found it and it was beautiful. On my way to my wedding, one of the stones fell out from near the place that had been repaired. I called and told them, and they offered to repair it at no cost. I mailed it to them before my honeymoon. I wore the damaged ring at my wedding. The woman who coordinated with me on the phone was very helpful and gracious. When I went to pick it up after my honeymoon, the salesman I spoke to was exceedingly rude. I asked him to tell me how they had repaired it, because I wanted to understand how the diamond had fallen out to make sure it didn't happen again. He told me that they repaired it this once, but that if this happened again, I'd need to go somewhere else and that I shouldn't have bought such a poorly made ring in the first place. Mind you, I didn't buy this ring. It was bought and custom made for me as a gift (engagement ring, anyone?) and I had just come back from my honeymoon. Vastly inappropriate thing to say to a new bride. He implied that this was my fault and that I had wanted a new stone, when the ring had broken the day after their repairs and right before my wedding. I left and will not be back because of their tacky and demeaning service. I don't know how they stay open. Of course, the stone has stayed in place for nearly a year, so the craftsmen they work with did their job. The problem is in the front of house at EB Horn. They send most of their work out to craftsmen at another location, and they seem to do well. But it's not worth enduring the yuck yucks at the counter. read more

I was not impressed with the service. Not only was the saleswoman not nice, she wasn't very helpful either. I was buying a bracelet as a gift and had some questions about sizes that she didn't (or maybe couldn't?) really answer. I had to prod her to even show me the different sizes. Prices were obviously way marked up since she offered me 25% off without my even asking. That said, I got 25% off, which was obviously nice. On the plus side, there were definitely plenty of salespeople on hand to help and hopefully at least some of them are better than the one I ended up with. read more

I wanted a new watch band and I wanted it now. I was looking around for watch bands at Macy's (they don't sell them) and the nice lady at the counter there directed me to EB Horn. I didn't even know this place existed even though I am sure I passed it hundreds of times walking around downtown crossing. I walked in, a little sheepish, and asked if they sold watch bands. A nice lady directed me to a guy at the end of the counter who showed me a bunch of nice leather bands in various colors and textures. Prices on the bands, I thought, we a little inflated, but, remember, I wanted the watch band now. So I selected one. The guy put it on my watch and even fixed the date counter on my watch that I hadn't managed to figure out in all my years of wearing it. I was psyched that I had my new watch band. Happiness. Overall, I was pleased with the place. They had efficient and friendly service. Had the prices been a little more reasonable, I'd give them four stars. I am debating bringing some rings here to be resized but want to call and inquire about the price first. read more

For what I needed (watch battery replacement) this was better than good enough. First off there are like eleventy billion people working there and it's TINY. Everyone who wasn't otherwise engaged seemed personable and I got a few smiles as I headed back to the watch man. Even though he had to take the watch apart (it's a Fossil so it has two batteries) I was still out in just over five minutes and for around $10. Not too shabby if you ask me. He was concerned that the face on my watch looked strange but once I assured him that was a 'feature' and not a defect he had a good laugh and I was on my way. I can't speak to much else aside from the fact that this place is well lit and jam packed with stuff. I will certainly come back here when I need more watch work or god forbid something shiny. read more

Still buzzing from the newness of the sparkly thing on my left hand, this review might be a bit biased!! I went here in November with my boyfriend (now fiancé) to go ring browsing for our 4 year anniversary. We had tried 3 other jewelry stores and I was about to give up when I remembered this place in Downtown Crossing. I can understand how the staff might come across as rude but our experience was nothing but pleasant. We walked in, were greeted, and serviced right away. "Norm" spent about a half an hour with us and let me try on whatever I wanted. He also got my ring size and wrote on the back of his business card the different styles and settings that I liked and didn't like. Fast foward to this past weekend. I am now the proud recipient of a GORGEOUS ring. My finacé reported having a great experience making the purchase and also mentioned getting a very good deal. I happened to be in the neighborhood two days ago and popped in to find out how to take care of my ring. The sales associate was extremely friendly and offered to clean it for free since I was there. I will definitely consider getting our wedding bands from this store and will be sure to write an update if and when that occurs. read more

First off, I understand why some people may not love this place. The people who work there are definitely not your touchy-feely, excited-to-see everyone types. But they are fair, reasonable, and good at what they do. My now fiance and I stopped by this place after spending a very stressful half hour at Tiffany searching for engagement ring styles that I like. We were pleasantly surprised to walk in to EB Horn and find that a one carat solitaire would not, in fact, cost $20,000. Although my fiance opted to purchased the diamond for my engagement ring over the internet (highly recommend that, by the way), he brought it here to have it set. Although I wasn't with him for that, he had nothing but nice things to say about the service he received, even though they were not selling him the diamond. A few weeks later I went back to have my ring sized down a little and they not only offered me great advice about how small to get it, but I brought it in at 9:30 am and picked it up the SAME DAY at 5:00. Finally, I got a watch battery replaced in literally 10 seconds for only $10. Can't beat that. I highly recommend EB Horn and will certainly be returning for our wedding bands. read more

Of note - I have a crappy Filene's Basement watch that looks lovely and has stayed ticking for 6+ years with the help of this shop.
