Wandering around Downtown Crossing last night, I spotted EB Horn and, remembering the two broken necklaces in my purse, decided to pop in. I was directed to the repair person at the back of the store. I handed her my two necklaces, and in a snap, she was at her table, fixing them. She told us to have a look around while we waited (and oh boy, we did: tons of beautiful and eclectic jewelry set up in a very quaint, old-timey way that I just love). About 7 minutes later, she came over, handed me the necklaces, said "no charge" and walked away. Both were perfectly repaired. Seriously, that is just the nicest thing that's ever happened. Kay Jewelers once wanted to charge me $20 for the same repair. Thank you, EB Horn repair lady! read more

For a little shop, this place packs a lot of punch! Some vintage/preowned jewelry, exclusive collections - such as Verragio, and the one thing I really wanted to see in person: a rose gold engagement ring and band!! What a variety. My SO and I looked in at least 15 stores over the span of 2 weeks with no luck. We walked in on a whim, not expecting to see much [again, it's no jumbo jewelry store like Long's or Mayors] and we were thoroughly impressed. The sales guys are nice and not remotely pushy OR snobby. We worked with Doug and John on 2 separate visits. Mark was also very helpful when I brought in some jewelry I wanted to get appraised/looked at... he and another gentleman were very knowledgeable and professional. I just got back from making a purchase of a nice piece of jewelery and I was very pleased. I had been looking for a VERY long time for a diamond eternity band that was thin and low-profile enough to not be annoying to have on my pinky finger. Most that I have seen were too bulky, with too-large stones for it to be delicate for every day use. I don't like to FEEL myself wearing any jewelery, so this was something that was of dear import, to quote Shakespeare. I wandered in not expecting them to really have what I was looking for. Lo and behold, they had a few items that met my requirements. The salesperson Paul was very helpful to me, very patient, and just overall very pleasant. As I stood in the many mirrors trying to decide to go with the ring I had initially wanted, (and one that had larger stones but was also a little bulkier), Paul patiently hung out. Probably 15 minutes of me just trying to decide which one I wanted. I went with the small dainty ring with tiny diamonds. I went with it because I'm super casual, and the one with the larger stones was a little too splashy for my jeans and sneakers look that I prefer. I have a gold ring that my grandma gave me when I was 13, and it means the world to me. When it got bent out of shape, I was devastated and worried about how much it would cost me to get it fixed. My boyfriend and I went here last Saturday to look at engagement rings and Christine was our sales associate. She was awesome!!! We told her our budget, and she was able to accommodate it with a beautiful ring! She was very patient with us, even when we told her our intention was just to look, but she was still happy to work with us. We were looking for something that is limited in vendors who carry them, and did a lot of online shopping before deciding to see what EB Horn had. I was surprised that they were able to find what we were looking for and competitively price it. I would agree with some reviewers that there are some sales associates that rubbed me the wrong way, especially when I called ahead of time, so I feel very lucky that we had someone nice and patient work with us. Should have checked out the reviews before going- like other people have said--Absolute jerks!! Went in there to get an estimate on antique Navajo jewelry only to have the guy laugh in my face and say in a super rude tone, "we don't buy silver." Okkkk that's fine, but he grew even ruder when I asked for a recommendation re: where to go- "arizona??"- um ok. Could do without the snark and outlandish suggestion. The best example I can tell you is that 25 years ago my mother gave me my deceased fathers gold diamond ring. I never took it off as it had such emotional value. My son bought an engagement ring at E.B Horn. The engagement didn't work out. We took the ring back to sell it back to them. They treated us very gernerously on the return. They even apologized that they couldn't do better, but would take care of us if we returned for further business with them. My wife had been browsing for earrings while we were in there, and got a price for them by the owner. He said if we didn't want to pay that much, he could make a comparable set, of slightly less quality for about half the price. Six months later, for Christmas, I called in to order the less expensive earrings. The owner gave me the original earrings at the discounted price! Win for me, win for my wife! We are both millennial engineers shopping for an engagement ring. We don't buy anything without researching the heck out of it first. In this day and age, buying diamond is no longer a mystery. There's a lot of information on the internet that you can educate yourself before you head to the stores. I accept that an experienced jeweler is probably better than us engineers armed with all the facts in the world... sort of like my mom will always cook better than me because she just knows when a chicken is cooked through vs me having to stick a thermometer in to check... I hope the analogy made sense. We live in the neighborhood and EB Horn was our first store to visit. This was our game plan - we knew we were going to get married but we wanted to do the traditional proposal stuff. He wanted me to pick out a ring style, then he buys the diamond, which may or may not be from EBH, and puts it in. Sounds not too complicated right? We expressed interests in looking at ring settings. I started looking at their halo rings and the sales guy started to inquire the diamond that we had in mind. Just be aware, these folks have not heard of the Holloway Cut Advisor tool at all. Perfectly fine if you have 20+ years of experience, but knowing that diamond is a lot of optical science, we felt that it was important that we can run some numbers with HCA. Salesman had zero interest in listening to us. I started to faze out from their conversation and concentrated on looking at the settings. Somehow things heated up and they got a bit loud... Apparently the salesman became pushy, but we only wanted to look at the settings at that moment. Sure, we were thinking of buying the diamond from another source, but we were totally open to options if the price and quality is right, and only if we feel like customers with power. Feeling embarrassed, I didn't want to stay there anymore. Did the salesman have to shut the jewelry box and say "ok then" at our face? Fine with us since we had no desire to return. We never meant to be disrespectful of their expertise, but is it so wrong to want to feel comfortable with our not-so-small purchase using known scientific way? In fact I feel way more comfortable buying diamonds online now than from EB Horn. At the end we found another jeweler in the jewelry building down the street who understood everything we wanted. We are now shopping for a ring setting around the area and every store has been very accommodating and happy to help. By far this was one of the worst jeweler experiences we've had. Starting from the moment my fiancée and I walked in the door, we weren't greeted but rudely barked at inquiring if we had an appointment. We were assisted by an associate whom was scheduled to appraise 2 engagement rings for us. We were told that EB Horn really only appraises natural grown diamonds and because the items we brought in were GIA certified lab grown diamonds, it would be a problem. After a few minutes of debating if the store would be able to appraise them, and our first associate audibly huffing and puffing, we were moved to another associate, Michael. During this unfortunate interaction, Michael could provide us with little information as to why we experienced such a negative response to the diamonds being lab grown. During the brief appraisal process, Michael copied information from the paperwork provided and referenced a binder, never actually looking at the stones. While being walked to the rear of the store for payment, Michael told us that if we were ever in the market for "real" diamonds to keep them in mind, as if the rings we had brought in were anything but. It was a disappointing and extremely disheartening experience to say the least. EB Horn has an exceptionally long way to go with their customer service and I'm SHOCKED to see any remotely positive reviews on their site. read more

Shortly after I became engaged, I went to E.B.'s for some jewelry cleaner for my new ring. I walked in and the first salesperson I saw gave me a dirty look. I should have walked out at that point, but saw another salesperson standing around doing nothing and she sort of smiled at me. So I asked her if I could buy some jewelry cleaner and she said, "do you want us to clean it?" I said no, I just wanted some jewelry cleaner to take home, the kind that comes in a little jar? "Oh" she said, go down there and ask, pointing about 4 feet away from her to two women at a desk, who both looked up at me like, "what?" One of them had a purse with her and the other looked really mean, and I wasnt sure which one was the actual E.B. employee so I asked them both, "May I get some jewelry cleaner, the kind in a little jar?" She yelled out someone else's name, (let's call him "Bob") Bob came around the corner and I asked again for the little jar of cleaner. He smiled, walked away and I wasnt sure if he just didnt feel like getting this, forgot or went to the bathroom. He did find the little jar of jewelry cleaner. YES! At last. He gave me my change and smiled again. When I left, the person who scowled at me when I came in, was still scowling. What a happy, helpful place! read more

I came a while ago to get my upgraded engagement ring appraised and I wound up purchasing a pair of cuff links for hubby's b-day, but this was no GRAND experience. Unfortunately (maybe due to the fact that I look a lot younger than I am or "hopefully not" because I am of a darker persuasion than most of the clientele they see in here) It was AWHILE before anyone helped me. I had to wait to be greeted as every time I looked at an associate they would either look away or look down. Not wanting to just leave I stayed my footing and FINALLY I was waited on. I produced my ring and was immediately asked for paperwork, which I had and it surprised the associate. After being told what my ring was possibly worth they asked if I wished to send it away for an accurate appraisal. I told them "NO" but I would like to purchase some cuff links. I was told that the cuff links were fairly expensive to which I shot back "ohh I'm sorry, does it look like I'm in the wrong place" as I flashed the ring he just "appraised". I asked to work with someone else as this man was aggravating me. Another man at the end of the counter said he would be happy to show me some cuff links. I wound up purchasing a pair that were an original design and were 1 of a kind. Just to stick it to the "original" associate, I paid in full AND in cash then gave the gentleman (who helped me) a NICE tip. The store is small and the pieces are mostly common. I saw the same stuff at Kays and Belden, this place just shines them up a little more. The cuff links I bought were throughly enjoyed by my husband and I wound up having my ring appraised "on site" at another location. I will not be returning here as they made me feel like Julia Roberts from pretty woman when she walks into the clothing boutique. read more

I can't comment on their products as I haven't managed to buy anything there. Perhaps my appearance doesn't measure up to their exacting standards but the fact is I have never been treated with the kind of contempt I received from the staff of this establishment. I was looking for a replacement bracelet wristband for my Wenger watch. I went up to the counter where a klatsch of staff members were having a nice chin-wag among themselves. I was ignored for an interminable period. Finally, as I gave up and made to leave, an icy looking woman approached me from the other side of the shop, looked me up and down and said "Yes?" in a tone suggesting I had a bad smell (which I patently do not.). I told her what I wanted, and she said "Back there", waving in the general direction of the rest of the world, and walked off. I went "back there", where I found another person sitting behind a counter doing nothing but ignoring me as hard as he could. When he couldn't avoid eye contact any longer he winced at me and said "Yeah?" I told him what I wanted and before I could finish my sentence he said "No" in a tone suggesting I must be a complete moron and walked away. What a strange business model! Business must be really really good for a shop to employ staff who actively discourage people from buying anything and piss them off in the process. My money is as green as anyone's and if I treated my retail customers this way I would be sacked. read more

I bought my engagement diamond at blue Nile and wanted to get it appraised. One of the associates came over offering to help. It was GIa certified so I had all the specs in that document. Upon reviewing the diamond, he immediately began questioning the validity of the diamond and the matching documentation. He brought out the magnifying glass, checked for a bit and claimed he could not find the laser inscription either. Then he brought over a collegue who also examined and stated the same. Lastly, he claimed that he would do me a favor and not charge me for an appraisal claiming he wouldn't put his name in such item. So I decided to take it to another jeweler for a second opinion and within seconds, he verified what I had. To make sure, I asked if I could see the inscription, and sure enough, there it was. Obviously, these guys were not happy with the fact that I didn't buy from them and wanted to steer others out of purchasing elsewhere. Even if they could have made a quick few hundred bucks for the Appraisal, they'd rather lie and have you get scared so that you would buy from them, since they are so legit. These guys lost a potential repeat customer for sure and probably some more by having forcing a customer to leave negative feedback. read more
