This company came out in December of 2019 and replaced our furnace (it's under sized and meant for a closet installation and not the flat of an attic). So far, two parts have failed and have been replaced. It turns out when they installed it, they improperly installed the vent which scorched our roof and could have burned the house down. They have replaced the parts under warranty, but failed to offer a solution to the problem they caused. Before they came out this last time in 2025, we had already had 2 inspections and were able to send pictures of the problems. They charged for the visit, didn't have the parts and then double charged us because they had to come back a second time. It cost almost $500 for a free warranty piece to be replaced and we still have to pay a roofer to fix the roof before the house burns down. Technicians are great, but this company will lie and steal from you and you'll be lucky if your house doesn't burn down. Do not recommend. Use anyone else. read more

I was referred to E L Payne by another HVAC company as my location was outside their service area. We had a leak that developed after running the AC unit this past weekend. Called at 8am and was told a tech could be by later that day. Chris arrived and was well prepared for the task. He had a blanket to lay down on the floor and even had his own set of booties to cover his shoes. Though we have a bigger issue than they were able to handle, Chris was able to quickly determine a few potential root causes for the leak. Couldn't be happier with the service and professionalism from E L Payne. Would recommend them to anyone needing immediate HVAC service. read more

This is a message for the Owner of this company. I see that you have been in business for a long time so I am sure you are a reputable person with reputable work ethics. Having said that I believe there is some shady business going on with some of your employees and you might not be aware of it. Your company just tried to rip me off. Little background: We will call 3 parties involved in this story with Option A, Option B and Option C (where E L Payne Company is Option C). I noticed that my AC was not blowing cold air. We are referred to this guy (Option A). We called him, explained to him what is happening and he says that in his opinion a part needs to be changed. He quotes $800.00 I think it is excessive and look for Option B. Option B actually comes to my place, goes on the rooftop, inspect the HVAC system and says that he can't refill the Puron because there is some sort of blockage. He said it will take him too much time to figure out and suggest we call Option C (E L Payne). We call Option C and they agree to come look at our unit charging us $97 dollars for the first 30 mins. This gentleman comes and knows personally Option B. He does not attempt to add Puron (he does not even try) and he said that 2 pieces need to be replaced. We ask for a quote. He goes into the car, spends about 25 mins and comes back. They are asking a WHOPPING $3304.49! Please note that they did not itemize the cost of this job. Parts plus labor $3304.49. He said 8 hours job, 2 men. I pay $97.00 to this company and tell them I will have to think about it. I feel I am getting ripped off so I call back Option A which agrees to come look at the unit. He attempts to put Puron in and he finds no blockage of any sort, no need to replace anything. Total cost paid $145.00 and My AC is cold and works as it should. I think that there is some sort of collusion between Option B and Option C. Option B comes, is nice and does not ask any $ for the service. He refers me to Option C that quotes me a ridiculous number for work and parts that are not needed. I am attaching pics of what was quoted from E L Payne and what I actually paid. Hiring E.L. Payne to replace the ducts on my 1933 furnaces was a huge and dangerous mistake. My original Payne furnaces had never been a problem, but So Cal Gas refused to turn on the pilot lights until I replaced all the ducts. I called Payne and they sent out a technician who after checking the furnace & ducts and the Gas Co paperwork quoted a price of $6800. They did the job, lit the pilot lights, collected payment and left. I'm an 85 year old woman, and trusted Payne to do the job so I didn't go down to the basement to check, since I wouldn't have known what to look for anyway. So Cal Gas turned off the pilots last April, and came back in October to re-light them. Again they refused, showing me the huge cracks in the ducts that connected to the furnaces which were also 1933 original & which Payne had not replaced. I called Payne, and a new rep said he didn't know why they hadn't replaced those small sections, that he likely would have, but too bad and they would do it for an additional $3800. I'm old and living on social security, and I won't have heat this winter because of Payne's dishonest business practices and poor work ethic. I believe they knowingly did an incomplete job, and according to SoCal Gas put my life and my house in extreme danger. I believe they are also guilty of elder abuse. I intend to file complaints with BBB and the Contractors License Board. read more

I am so glad we found E L Payne to fix our AC!! I had a few other technicians (all found through Yelp) check out our AC program, but Lionel from E L Payne is by far the most professional and honest. As a woman with little knowledge of how AC works, the other companies were giving me outrageous quotes; one of them was extremely sketchy and tried to up-sell me by saying that my AC is too old to fix and that I need to replace the whole system for thousands of dollars. It turned out the problem was a broken capacitor, which cost way, way less to fix. Lionel had more than 10 years of experience, and was the only one who diagnosed where the problem was coming from. He went above and beyond in his service, fixing our AC in a short time and replacing our air filter. My family and I are so grateful to him, and we cannot recommend E L Payne more! read more

I so dislike calling people to work on our home. The quoted prices seem to go up and up. This did NOT happen with E L Payne. It has been 7 years since our HVAC was last checked by Payne. The technician that came out had been here before and was so pleasant. He patiently explained what he was going to do, all while wearing a mask and booties. He measured the temperatures in several areas of the house. He informed us that our dirty AC unit was filthy and then washed it down. He replaces our filter. He checked all the outlets inside our house, adjusting them as needed. Finally, he recorded his visit on a paper on the unit. There was no upselling! All of this and our bill was just over $100. It has taken me way too long to write a review for this wonderful business. Hands down the most responsive and personal customer service and highest quality of work and follow up years after completing a full HVAC overhaul for our home. A friend referred us when our AC system had reached its end of days date. This was 2014/15. The guys who worked in the house were friendly and professional and very kind to our pups who were freaked out bc of the noise. Every service call is followed up/called back almost immediately and when possible, happens day of call. We just moved back in our house after an extensive remodel and of course, everything went wrong/broke the very first week and it was 100+ degrees. I called Payne on a Saturday afternoon and they managed to have John out to our house by 6 pm and fixed a damage part and changed air filter. When our condenser (which was also damaged by construction workers) had to be replaced The Payne company had a team at our house the next morning (another 100+ degree day) who worked all day to get us back up and cooled down so we could finally unpack. If you are looking for an AC profession, look no further. There may be other, cheaper companies out there, but you can't put a price on the quality of customer service and response time during summer heat wave + pandemic in the valley. read more

They did the original installation of the heat pump at my home. Loud noises started being made by the unit and called them to repair it. They came and said they don't know what is the problem and that I need to pay them $93 for the call anyway. They were amazing. We have a 1930's apartment building. The furnace was cracked and no one could fix it. The owner explained everything to me and gave me the options with explanations. They came and replaced it and put new ducting in the attic. The owner has come by several times to check on progress and answer questions for us, but he needn't, bc his staff is knowledgable and conscientious. I loved E L Payne. Sadly, they let me down horribly. During a hot spell this summer, the blower on the HVAC went out. I called my hero, E L Payne. The lady on the phone said it would be one week before anyone would come to help. I explained about having an elderly person who was suffering and would not survive the heat, about being a customer for over 40 years, about the seriousness of the situation. She said they were busy. She refused to consider giving us any cancellation appointments. I got another company to come out to service the HVAC system the same day. They said the furnace with the blower was so old he couldn't repair it. They gave me an estimate by the end of the day for a replacement. Because of my loyalty to E L Payne, I called them and explained that I would like to get an estimate from them also, so that I could consider staying with them. The lady on the phone said that Daniel Payne would call me the same day and might be able to get the new system installed sooner than she could estimate because he's the owner. Sadly, he didn't call that day, or the next day, or ever. The other company installed the next day and did a fast and excellent job. A week later someone finally showed up from E L Payne and wanted to bill me for not canceling. Seriously? Listen E L Payne, you won't sell me a new HVAC, won't give me an estimate, won't return my calls, won't call to let me know if you get a sooner service opening and you send someone out to be rude? My experience with E L Payne was excellent. We had a new wall heater installed in our home. Our house is old and the technician did a great job explaining everything and providing our options. The gentlemen who installed the heater were very professional, courteous, punctual and personal. I appreciated that they used drop cloths when they came in. I felt very confident in this company's service. It's worth going with a well established and reputable company when it comes to heat and air jobs. Our Gravity Furnace was installed over 40 years ago. It had a EL PAYNE logo on it, so I called them up and had them do a checkup. John came out and checked everything and gave a thumbs up. Our thermostat gave up working so it was a easy fix, just make sure its the right one as John indicated. Always nice to have first hand knowledge from professionals that know these older Gravity furnaces. Checked for flame and Co2 and all sorts of things. Even learned that the sand on the top of the furnace is intentional ! They sure dont make them like they used to. ! Highly recommend for folk with the older Furnaces ! read more

Called their 800 number listed here on yelp at 515pm today to ask if my tech was still coming (appt 4-6pm), but got their voicemail message that their office closed at 5pm. I did leave a message and promptly got a call back from a 310 number. They had no record that I ever scheduled an appointment. So, I scheduled with another company for tomorrow instead. This is only the 2 yelp review I ever been compelled to post and unlike my first review for a positive experience this one is for less than stellar customer service. I understand that an HVAC company is incredibly busy during a heat wave - but I've been waiting for almost a week for an estimate. My AC unit died during the most recent heat wave - several friends and neighbors highly recommended I contact E L Payne - which I did. They had a technician out to my home the following day - which left me feeling very confident in my choice. When the technician left he told me Mr. Payne personally prepares all the estimates and i might have it the following day (sat.) but most likely I wouldn't have it until Monday. I want thrilled w a 3 day wait for an estimate but understood given the weather. I called back late afternoon on Monday since I still hadn't received any communication. The woman I spoke w assured me she would let Mr. Payne know I had called. 2 days have passed since then without any communication so I called again. The same woman said she would let Mr. Payne know i called again. Still nothing. At this point I can only think this company doesn't need my business. A week later I'm back at square one. read more

I was at a loss when our air conditioning gave out in late April. After making a few calls to other vendors that didn't impress me, I called EL Payne and they were amazing. Came out and took a look at the existing unit. Then based on that put together a comprehensive quote for a replacement. Ten days later I had wonderful cool air blowing through our condo! Everyone I dealt with at Payne was professional and willing to answer all my questions, from the initial phone conversation to the actual install they were great. The two technicians who installed the new AC arrived at the time they said they would, and got to work immediately. It was a two-day job and when they were finished it was like they had never been there, they had cleaned up, taken care of discarding the old unit and tested the new one. Screaming over the phone to me that I'm "stingy!!!" That where I hung up on Chris the technician. Where all this started? I am simply looking for a company to move the return because it's too close to our bedroom and makes too much noise. It all started out friendly enough where Chris was trying to get some information from me about the unit and configuration. Went up in the attic but wasn't able to get everything we needed. The reason we did this is because E.L. wants to charge me upwards of $100 to quote me a job. Where did this come from? When you take your car to the mechanic, does he put his hands on his hips and say he won't diagnose the problem unless you put a hundred bucks in his hand? Of course not. They call it a service call. I don't need any service. E.L. - I WANT TO HIRE YOU. BUT I'M NOT GOING TO PAY A FEE TO HIRE YOU!! All we are trying to do is cut a hole 6 feet away from where the return currently exists and run some new ducting (simplifying - but that's the essence). They have to come look at it. OK, come look at it. But I'm not paying you to come look at it. After determining that I couldn't get Chris enough information over the phone, he got exasperated and said look, you gotta get someone out there to look. I don't disagree! But why should anyone pay anyone so that they can pay them some more??!! How is this "stingy?" I've owned a home for 25 years. Been through plenty of plumbers, electricians, architects, contractors, gardeners and more. If I have a project or work for any of them I have never paid them to show up and quote me. There's no way you will ever be able to rationalize this. And you didn't do yourself any favors by screaming insults at a $1500 payday. They might do good work. We first had another (cheaper) company come out. The guy took one look at the old system and left saying he couldn't fix it. When my family moved into an older home in 2012 the HVAC was a mess. Although we are in Los Angeles at night (in the winter) the heat would kick on and essentially blow into the crawl spaces- leaving the house cold and wasting a ton of money in the process. I called a few HVAC companies and chose the Payne Company based on: 1) their understanding of the problem and clearly telling me about it 2) how they would rectify this 3) when they would do it. In the end the service was quick, the guys were very nice who came to do the work... they were in and out. Results speak for themselves. I called the Payne company because our AC was blowing at half the normal force and I was concerned there was a big issue waiting for me. They sent someone promptly to my home the next business day. The gentleman was polite and professional and didn't upsell me. He fixed the problem for a very fair price and even replaced all of the air filters in my home for free. The technician called me the next day to follow up on his visit and spent 15 minutes explaining tips on how to properly maintain my central AC unit. I didn't expect that.
