E Tae Won Express gets a solid four stars out of my wife and me. We love Korean food and this place serves really comforting and traditional home-style Korean food. The food here is just as good as, if not better than, most of the Korean restaurants we've tried in the Triangle so far. A Korean-American friend, who grew up in the Triangle, told us his parents would often drive from the Triangle to get Korean food in Fayetteville. This is a very low-key, no-frills, mom-and-pop restaurant. You come here for the food, not the ambiance. This is where local Korean people go to get Korean food. For example, on a recent visit, my wife saw three ajummas (Korean aunties) enjoying naengmyeon (cold noodles) for dinner. E Tae Won is located in a small, L-shaped strip mall on the west side of Fayetteville. It's about halfway between Fort Liberty and the VA. During my wife's work rotations at the VA, she'll often call in orders for takeout. E Tae Won doesn't have a website nor official menu online. My wife uses the pictures of the menus on Yelp when deciding what to order over the phone. She's picked up orders and brought them to our home in Chapel Hill. E Tae Won is always a treat for me and we both always look forward to it. The food is tasty, satisfying, and filling. The quality is fresh and good and the portion sizes are generous. Service is great too. What more can you ask for? My wife says it's always the same nice Korean woman that serves her at the counter. Dishes we've had from here include galbi (marinated short ribs), beef and spicy pork bulgogi (two different kinds of marinated sliced meat), bibimbap (mixed rice), tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), yaki mandu (fried Korean dumplings), Korean-style sweet and sour chicken (crispy -- different from the softer Chinese version), pajeon (scallion pancakes), and more. The banchan is excellent too. It's always fresh and delicious. We usually get four different kinds of banchan in one box and one of the selections changes. There's always kimchi, cucumber with gochujang (Korean red chili paste), julienned daikon (radish), and sliced fish cake, plus bean sprouts or seaweed. The kimchi always tastes fresh and homemade. My wife likes that it isn't as salty as most other kimchi. I agree. I recommend all of the dishes I mentioned above except for the yaki mandu. I can take it or leave it. My wife likes it more than me and says if you like dumplings, it might be worth a shot. The owner would benefit from some lessons in customer service. On more than one occasion, I've heard her make rude and demeaning comments about customers, as if she's doing them some grand favor by allowing them to eat at her restaurant. Another time, I called to order Korean fried chicken, and got talked down to like a child that they don't sell KOREAN fried chicken, they sell CAJUN fried chicken. I asked what made the friend chicken "Cajun" instead of "Korean," and she bitch-splained that the chicken is "sweet and spicy, and that's not Korean fried chicken." Okay. It sure SOUNDS like the flavor profile for Korean fried chicken and not remotely Cajun, but what do I know? I only grew up eating my Korean grandmother's fried chicken and lived in Louisiana for half my life before moving to North Carolina. I was advised to order some if I wanted to learn the difference. No thanks. Food is good, but that's assuming you still have an appetite after reliving high school mean girls hell and being berated for the most asinine reasons. I happened to come to town earlier than I thought from Hampton Roads, VA, so I was eager to pop in to try their lunch buffet. It was quite small, but had all the major essentials- a kimchi bar, jap chae (glass noodles), vegetable fried rice, bulgogi, white rice, fried shrimp & fish, yakimandu (fried mandoo/fried dumplings). I was not disappointed. I was so glad to have finally tried this place, as I've been eyeballing it for over 4 years, but never was able to come down during the open hours. The food was good and I would definitely return again! The service was the best- when I walked in, I did wait for about 5 minutes before sitting down, but they were pretty packed and it was already 1:20 when I arrived on a Friday. I came here on a very slow afternoon & ordered the Green Chicken Curry. I specifically asked if it was mild & the waitress said, "You can get it any way you want it." I ordered it mild. Because the only vegetables in the curry were bamboo shoots & green peppers (I can't eat peppers), I asked if I could get zucchini & mushrooms, instead. They didn't have zucchini, so I asked for muchrooms. The waitress told me that she would just charge the lunch price since I didn't want deep-fried vegetable rolls. The curry was excruciatingly hot. I let the waitress know as soon as she returned to check on me & she asked if I wanted something else. I told her that, if the Chicken Pad Thai was mild, I'd like to trade the curry for it. At that point, the waitress told me that I couldn't "trade" the dishes; that I would have to pay for both of them. Since I'd only eaten 3-4 bites of the curry--primarily the rice--I was very surprised & declined the extra meal. After I finished my soft drink, I requested the check & was floored to see that it was over $19.00. When I questioned the price, the waitress didn't offer to compensate me for anything & I was also charged $4 for the mushrooms. Pros: the bathroom & tables looked clean. I went on a Friday for the lunch buffet. It was about $3 -4 more than M-TH buffet price. I think it's because they have this one beef dish on Friday. But that's just my guess. I was there around 1pm and the buffet stops at 2pm. I had plenty of time to eat and stuff my face. When I walked in I was greeted and told to sit myself and help myself. It was weird. I was not waited on for my drink like other people who walked in after me was. I grabbed a couple plates of food and water. Later the waitress came over with silverware but I had already helped myself with chopsticks and napkins. The buffet table had a good selection of dishes. Bulgogi, pork spicy bulgogi, and beef strips. The beef strips were my favorite! They also had chicken wings and fried shrimp. The big pieces of shrimp not like popcorn shrimp. They also had a soup dish but I passed on trying it. Their bonchon selection was limited to kimchi, cucumber, fish cake, and sprouts. They did have kimbop but they did not refill it when it was out. The place closes on Saturday which is bad enough, so we went Wednesday night and arrived ten minutes before 7. We then found out they close at 7:30. I've eaten Korean food all over the world. This is one of the best of them. The hostess/owner always remembers our names, what we ordered the last time we visited, and how we like our food. This is a goto place for us. My son always gets the bulgogi, I usually get japchae bap, and my wife usually gets the bibimbap, which we all enjoy everytime. The little side dishes (Banchan) are so good too, and Song, (the owner) refills them when they are starting to look close to empty. This is a place you go to get a small glimpse into Korean food. From my visit the only truly Korean dishes there were kimchi and bulgogi;which tasted like peppered skirt steak. Best Korean BBQ in Fayetteville by far. I frequent this place and I always go for the LA Ribs. Tastes pretty close to California Korean food. The owner is super nice and the place isn't usually super busy. I have yet to try this place during their buffet hours though, that might be next on the list. Came here for a late lunch on a weekday to satisfy a Korean food craving. You can either order from their regular menu or eat at the buffet during lunch hour, which is at 11am-2pm. On Mondays-Thursdays, the buffet is $10.89 ($12.69 to include soda). Fridays, it's $13.09 ($14.89 with soda). Saturdays, it's $14.16 ($15.96 with soda). I arrived a little after 1pm, and as a result, the food was no longer fresh. They have a limited selection that includes basics like Japchae, Gimbap, Fried Rice, Egg Drop Soup, Bean Sprouts, Bulgogi, Kimchi appetizers, and fruit. However, my food was cold. Tasty (except for the fried rice - didn't care for that), but cold (even the soups were lukewarm). No new food was being brought out to replenish foods that were running low at the buffet bar. I don't know if they replenish food until a certain time, or if they only make one batch to last the entire lunch period and let it run out. I sure hope it's not the latter. Their food has potential and probably tastes a lot better when served warm, but the fact is, my food was COLD. Neither the food containers nor the overhead area kept the food warm, at all. I also tried Bibimbap ($11.95) from their regular menu. Surprisingly, it came in a stone pot (the menu only indicated one type of Bibimbap and did not mention a stone pot option, but no complaints here!). It had some hot sauce in it, which I'm not used to in my Bibimbap, but otherwise, it was good. Comes with Egg Drop Soup and 3 sides (only THREE!?). I liked this much more than the buffet, mostly because it was served warm, unlike the buffet food. However, the buffet is a great deal in terms of price and, despite being limited, the variety of food available. Now, if only I could eat it warm.... Side note, the waitress seems like a sweet lady. She didn't do anything that was particularly nice, but when you interact with her, it feels like being with your sweet ol' grandma. read more
