since starting my new job at county center, i head to the cafeteria a few times a month. i'm a fan…read moreof their breakfasts in particular since they have egg bowls, breakfast burritos, english muffin sandwiches and avocado toast. what i appreciate most is that they give you a really good amount of food! for example, a $9.50 breakfast burrito comes with scrambled eggs, potatoes, cheese, and choice of meat (sausage, bacon). they fill it enough that the tortilla isn't truly folded/wrapped so you know you're getting a really well filled burrito! i also feel that the tortilla is homemade or something bc it has a certain textural crunch to it which i love! you can upgrade with avocado for an extra $2. speaking of which, i am in love with their avocado toast. do $5.95 you get a large slice of grilled, buttery toast (i assume it's butter from the taste) with a generous amount of sliced avocado garnished with everything bagel seasoning. this is delicious and nutritious and certainly keeps me full til lunch time. i don't usually sit in their cafe to enjoy my food since i gotta get back to work but they have a nice seating area with complimentary newspapers. located in the basement of the hall of justice, open to the public from 730-1445, monday-friday.

There are plenty of stations in this cafeteria (the largest on the EA Redwood Shores campus). As for the hot food, there are stations that remain the same each day (burgers, Mexican, pizza, etc.) -- and there's one station that has two consistently changing meals. In my experience, the rotating station is usually a hit or miss. They typically don't put enough meat in for me, but in my experience, you can ask for more of anything and they'll go ahead and put more in for you... So don't be afraid to personalize your order! The salad bar is by far my favorite place on campus besides my own cubicle. It has two large sides and opens half an hour earlier than the other stations, at 11am. They have a number of leafy vegetables (including KALE!), along with avocado, breadsticks, tofu, chicken, and all the veggies you could ever ask for. They charge you by weight, and my salads never end up being too expensive ($6-9). The soup is usually good, too, with two rotating soup selections. They do always serve chili as their third option (alternating between vegetarian and beef). The staff at Commons Cafe are all incredibly nice and friendly. Whenever I order hot food from one of the stations, they're always very attentive to any details I ask for in my order. I asked for no onions in my meal one day, and they gave it to me with onions. I was going to just take it anyways, but when the chef saw the look on my face he asked what was wrong and insisted on cooking it again for me. Overall, I'm satisfied with my experience, but would love more consistency in the quality of the rotating hot food station. I've only been working here for a few months, and can see myself getting tired of the food after a while.

My friend and I sat down close the the entrance and only waited about 10 mins for our food to come out. The food here really reminds me of one of the more disappointing dining halls I had on campus back in college. They have different sections here that rotate what they serve every day - the grill is usually some type of burger/sandwich with fries, saute has somebody stir frying some meat/veggies along with some form of carb, and the market usually has the "chef's special". + Saute: Usually overly oily and either overly salty or tasteless. I would avoid this station if you decide to come to the cafeteria - after one or two tries, I never came back to this station. + Grill/Burger: Just about everything I've seen them make here is frozen. Not the greatest feeling in the world to watch them make your food (it looks like they're dumping blocks of ice into the fryer). I remember one time I also waited over 30 minutes in line for something from this station - definitely not an acceptable wait time. They recently started offering grilled steaks and other meats, which I would also recommend avoiding. I tried the steak and it was lacking flavor and also had a good amount of inedible fat. + Market: This station usually has the special for the day. They usually have one meat option and one vegetarian option, and this could be good depending on what day it is. More often than not though, it's disappointing. The only thing I liked here was the roast beef (or similar meat) plate with veggies and potatoes. Everything else is pretty subpar to me. + Pizza: You would think pizzas are safe and can't be messed up. They mess it up here. The crusts are over floured with raw flour and the flavors I would expect from the ingredients that are on the pizza elude my taste buds. Imagine cardboard with pizza toppings and no flavor profile. Don't expect large or adequate portion sizes from any station either. They seem to be pretty stingy with their portions and scoops. While the convenience is great if you're working at Pacific Shores, I have made it a goal of mine to avoid eating here as much as I can.
