We came here for the great reviews but were quickly disappointed. I am a big fan of hot and hour soup but unfortunately the only thing hot about the soup is the temperature. The soup had no taste, it seemed like it was egg flower soup with tofu in it. When we got our food the chowmein looked like plain boiled noodles. The food had little to no flavor and the honey walnut shrimp was extremely underwhelming. I am disappoint to have spent my money here. I could have gone to Panda Express(which isn't even real Chinese food) and gotten more flavor than this. read more

Who would have thought that there would be good Chinese food in Monterey County with all of the Bay Area just a little further away? The small and modest storefront opens up into a bigger than expected sized dining space inside. I think that the biggest pull is that they offer lunch specials that give you an entree, a side (rice or chow mein), a soup and egg roll for like $10, that's value. The food is pretty good I've been here quite a few times and I've never been disappointed. The menu is pretty expansive and it's got something for everyone, they'll do almost all, if not all of their meat dishes with tofu instead (yum for the vegetarians). When I go here I like to get the beef chow fun and salt and pepper tofu. Those are my hands down favorites and I'm not sure you can get anything this quality anywhere around here. This is the absolute BEST Chinese restaurant that I have ever been to. I know it sounds weird, good authentic Chinese food in the heart of Salinas? But I kid you not, the food is to die for!!! I love their beef chow fun (my fave Chinese dish); it's the best beef chow fun I've ever eaten (and I try it at every Chinese restaurant I go to)! The beef is cooked perfectly so it's easy to chew, unlike the tough gross beef that usually accompanies this dish at other restaurants. The noodles are plenty flavorful without being too salty or overly greasy. They also don't give too many bean sprouts here, which means more yummy noodles and beef for me (hehe). Whenever my bf and I come here, we get their veggie fried rice and salt and pepper tofu, but we really enjoy a lot of the other dishes we've tried here as well. Just finished my take-out from here on my second night in Salinas and I'm impressed! Ordered the vegetarian eggrolls and sweet and sour tofu with a side of steamed rice. Other than the tofu being a bit on the soggy side (which I assume is because I got lost on the way back to my hotel and, well, it was some time before I actually ate), I'm very impressed! Easy to navigate menu for vegetarians, and the staff were pleasant on the phone and at the time of pickup. The portions were big, and reasonable priced with all three items coming to only $14.95 and the sweet and sour tofu in a really big box! I'm sufficiently stuffed, and really excited to have leftovers tomorrow (because living on a $25 dollar per diem isn't easy when you only have to eat out). For the past 10 years that I have lived in Salinas, I have continued to drive to Monterey for my favorite Chinese food. Well...gas prices what they are and all....I have made fewer and fewer trips to my usual spot. So, my husband and I were off to see our daughter in an Ariel production and we decided to live dangerously and...try...a...new...Chinese...restaurant. Granted, Eagle Restaurant is not new - in fact, it looks like it is as old as my mother and then some! However, as the exterior of the restaurant doesn't scream "Come In, We're Fabulous!", I haven't ventured in - until tonight. When we walked in we were greeted promptly and shown to a booth in the back. I didn't need my pearls for dinner tonight - not by a long shot. However, I will ALWAYS take friendly service over great ambiance any day of the week. And that's exactly what we got at Eagle - really fantastic service by many members of the staff - another reviewer was exactly right - our teapot was never dry and we never had an empty plate sitting longer than a nanosecond. They were on the ball. The food. I am somewhat picky about my Chinese food. I have frequented the same Chinese restaurant in Monterey for over 20 years and have a certain idea of what certain dishes should taste like. Eagle didn't make everything as I expected, however, everything I ate was delicious! Not every Italian restaurant makes Chicken Parm the same exact way, so why should I expect a Chinese dish to be a replica of a dish I love somewhere else? From the appetizers to the tea, every detail was done well - fried food was crispy - noodles were tender - and beef could be cut with the side of my fork. Did I mention that we were in and out of there in 40 minutes? In my book, any restaurant that serves fresh food quickly with super service deserves 5 stars. The Eagle is the only Chinese restaurant we will eat at in Monterey County because there is just no reason to eat anywhere else. No MSG in this place. My husband is a strict vegetarian, no egg and no seafood. Sam and the gang at the Eagle will make any dish on their menu with tofu. Kung pao tofu no problem. Of favorite dishes are: hot and sour soup (I get it take out with no egg when either so us are sick) lemon grass tofu, green beans and asparagus, salt and pepper anything (we order salt and pepper tofu most of the time but I also like the salt and pepper veggies and salt nod pepper shrimp) mapo tofu veggie mushu Veggie noodle soup brocolli double mushroom and fried rice. But my all time favorite is Walnut Shrimp. It is a mixture of savory and dessert! Ok, even their mixed veggie dish is lovely and satisfying. We have been coming here for years and I wouldn't think of eating at any other Chinese resto in this area. Everything is fresh and these guys aim to please. Sam even wrote a note for me for my trip to China that I could pull out at restaurants saying to feed me only vegetarian dishes. The atmosphere is improving. Absolutely the best Chinese Restaurant at which we have eaten. Always someone to immediately greet you with a smile! It's clean, nicely lit, mellow decor, soft background music. Anyone working there will greet you if they walk past your table. Everyone checks on you without being intrusive. Love the fact they use little, lite or no MSG & mild salt. .. Chinese food=MSG= migraine! I have not had one migraine, swollen hands or puffy face after a meal there. The food, is fresh, enticing aroma and nicely presented. 4 star Americanized chinese food but negative four stars for their high prices which are almost double most other chinese places ($19.95 per person for a family combo dinner , are you serious ? Most places are $9.50-12) . This place is on a dead empty street and the ambiance is typical chinese take out. Low frills but good attentive services and drink refills which is unusual for a chinese restaurant . We had salt and pepper shrimp based on all the yelp reviews but we actually liked this entree the least . We preferred the sweet and sour combo which had shrimp chicken and pork. The sauce wasn't the typical phony bright red sauce , it was more mellow and natural . The egg flower soup was good , Hong Kong crispy noodle with beef and pork fried rice was also good . The service was friendly and fast. The restaurant looked clean inside. It was a Saturday night and the restaurant had a few families dining. We were still skeptical. Our food was finally out and we couldn't wait to take our first bite. Our first bite would determine everything! Our first bite was amazing! The Hunan beef was so ridiculously sweet like candy. They poured sugar on the beef while frying, which caramelized. Disgusting. Just like eating carnival food. The dish is listed as spicy not sweet, but wasn't spicy at all. The restaurant shares a bathroom with a bar, so if you want a French Tickler or Cock-ring to go with your gross Chinese carnival food, they have a vending machine. The wall decor would have a tough time selling at a swap meet. Now that I've cleared my conscience.... The food was savory. I don't use that word, and it feels strange to use it in a sentence. My wife and I had the pork spare ribs, chow fun noodles and chicken fried rice. Savory is what I'd call the ribs. Delicious and well cooked to falling off the bone. The sauce was killer!! Very tasty. The chow fun was average fare. Good, but not impressive. The chicken fried rice is fantastic. Very flavorful, and not too heavy. It's was actually fluffy and well cooked. So stoked about this place. It's very hard to find a good place to eat Chinese food in Salinas. This used to be better when they first opened but it isn't as great anymore. Although they claim not to use MSG, they excessively use Oyster Sauce and garlic to replace it. The Mapo Tofu wasn't even Mapo Tofu, it was just tofu and vegetables in a oyster sauce gravy. The Curry Rice Noodles were ok, but not the best. The fried rice was decent, the soup of the day is probably the highlight for me. However it is very affordable on a budget. read more

This restaurant has a tiny storefront, but is a pretty decent size inside. The place is clean and the service was fantastic despite it being pretty busy on a sunday night. As grandpa would say, "I wasn't excited about it" lol - Steamed fish fillet - came with two good size fillets steamed on a bed of napa cabbage with a nice light soy sauce and ginger, scallion, and pepper on top. i liked this a lot - Oxtail stewed - my favorite dish we ordered. the meat was very tender and soft. The Eagle, despite its un-Chinese name and location, is one of the top places to get Chinese food in Salinas. It is on par with many top Chinese restaurants in Monterey and Marina. You will easily miss it if you drive by, as it is a hole-in-the-wall snuggled between other small locations on a busy street. They have delivery, however! Food: Eagle has some delicious dishes and some of the best eggplant I have ever tasted. It's hard to make good eggplant, and they have made it delicious. Their curry, their chicken chow fun, and many of their vegetable dishes are excellent, not being too greasy and--as they advertise on their menus--not using MSG. I only mention the MSG because some are highly allergic to the stuff. Portions are more than what one expects, especially for take-out. I know some complain about the portion size here, but perceptions vary between 'Murica!!' and sensible. They provide sensible portions, tasty, and with variety. Cost: You will spend a lot of money on food, here. For a party of three, consisting of four different dishes and having it delivered, we ran a bill of a little over $60. If you stick to one dish per person and eat family style, you might escape with a bill of under $15 per person, but that is still rather expensive given today's financial climate and other available options. I love the food here, and between it and the other arguably good Chinese restaurant around the corner (Cathay House), Eagle remains tops. read more

I don't normally eat Chinese food, if I'm feeling Asian food I usually opt for Thai(although I have not found decent Thai in salinas). Thai just has more vegetarian options and isn't as greasy/salty from my experience. Eagle though does a great job at breaking that opinion for me. They have a great menu with plenty of vegetarian options as you can substitute tofu for a lot of chicken and meat dishes. The staff is super nice and amazingly accommodating. We have called in with orders before and they actually had the food set out for us on the table as soon as we walked in!!! Awesome and understanding! Cashier left customers waiting for about 5-10 minutes at checkout area and once customers called for help to pay since no one was attending the cashier or on the floor, the cashier came rushing and let clients know he was almost there all while mumbling under his breath. Once at check out, the cashier made rude comments about payment options since clients wanted to split the bill. Once the clients signed their receipts, he called customers cheap after not getting the tip amount he wanted. Customers apologized and asked if he had a policy around a certain percentage given they had given at least 20%. Although I have always ordered it for delivery...yes they deliver within 2 miles of the restaurant... I'd say it's deserving of all the complements, food is tasty and the service is fast and professional. Ive eaten here a dozen or so times and have never been bummed. The place is clean and that's important to most of us. The parking is in the street or in the back parking lot and shouldn't be a deal killer. Another thing they do right is that they don't sweat a spacial request, a change of meat or subtract a ingredient. Consistently good all around with no disappointments. read more
