Salt Lake has an abundance of new residents from elsewhere much to its chagrin. Yes, we're all moving here and driving prices up, blah blah blah. BUT with us, the food scene is improving in increments. Relocating from the Bay Area has been an adjustment culinarily in terms of quality; fresh ingredients, interesting dynamics, plating etc. Early Owl has scratched my aching itch for a delicious, not grease laden, healthy meal, especially breakfast. Which brings me to the Salmon Scramble. It is all of the aforementioned and then some. There are multiple elements, LOTS of veggies and a gloriously generous portion of both smoked salmon and avocado. Upon completion, I feel invigorated, sated and happy. A friend was visiting from Costa Rica and wanted to check out the Heavy Metal Shop. While we were waiting for it to open we stopped at Early Owl and it was awesome. I got the Salmon scramble, chrysanthemum hot tea, a side of sourdough, and a side of hollandaise sauce $2.50, definitely worth it . I literally left no crumbs and almost literally licked the plate. Went there for breakfast a few weeks ago with my husband and daughter and it was pretty good. Services and food were good; we were able to sit outside and it was nice. Coffee and the banana berry smoothie were good. The only thing I didn't like was not having the table set up properly with condiments so every time we asked for anything it would take forever .. Way overrated! We had super slow, clueless, lazy service from our waitress. They use cheap, gross oil used to make their omelets, which were served cold and on plates covered with grease. I got the salmon bowl with smoked salmon, avocado, scrambled eggs, steamed broccoli and roasted/pan fried veggies. The veggies are the highlights! I actually managed to accidentally come here one morning. I was told about a breakfast taco place and thought that was what I was walking into (the taco place turned out to be right next door) I'm VERY glad I came. I got one of the açaí bowls and no joke, it was not only the best açaí bowl I've ever had (the fruit was all very high quality, the portion was large, it was drenched in honey, and most importantly the açaí itself was delicious), but one of the best breakfasts I've had. Because of my experience here, I've ordered açaí bowls from 4 different places in the last month hoping to scratch the itch, but none of them can get there. I really wanted to love this place. The restaurant is beautiful, the presentation is lovely, and the atmosphere fits the Maven District perfectly. The staff was friendly, and our server was pleasant throughout the meal. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite live up to the price point. My friend ordered avocado toast with poached eggs, and the egg I tried was surprisingly cold and lacked seasoning. The coffee was consistently lukewarm throughout our visit. I ordered the cheesesteak sandwich, which had good flavor but was quite greasy, leaving me with an upset stomach afterward. We also shared the mini pancakes. While they were beautifully presented with a generous bowl of fruit, the portion was much smaller than expected for the price. Toward the end of the meal, we discovered a hair in the fruit bowl. What disappointed me most was the response. When the cook asked how the meal was, I politely mentioned the hair. Later, I also shared feedback about the lukewarm coffee, cold poached egg, and greasy sandwich with a staff member. No one came to look at the fruit bowl, there was little acknowledgment of the issue, and no apparent concern or attempt to make things right. For three people, our breakfast was over $80 before tip, and at that price I expect both quality food and a stronger response when a legitimate concern is raised. I don't mind paying premium prices for a premium experience, but this visit fell short. I hope they take customer feedback seriously because the space has a lot of potential. For now, there are other breakfast spots in the area I would choose before returning. read more

Nestled in the cute streets of ninth and 100 not only can you enjoy a yummy meal but you can also pop into a few cute boutiques and shops while you're waiting for your table. We went on a busy weekend morning and waited about 40 minutes for a table. The smoothies were thick, fresh, super filling and delicious. I also enjoyed their avocado toast and mini pancakes. WOW! Early Owl is located on a gorgeous and fun street called Maven Quarter on 900 S. Such a lively street and just as beautiful inside. The employees are very welcoming, kind, and helpful with recommendations! There was no wait on a Sunday afternoon but the restaurant was quite busy so it was nice to get served so swiftly. The food was outstanding, the quality of the food is shown in the pictures and unique flavors created with each meal. Truly very rare to get such clean ingredients and wide variety. Light and airy! From the ambiance to the food itself. It's a really cute little breakfast spot but I can't quite identify the type of cuisine. I want to say it's "healthy" but I'm not entirely sure how each dish is prepared. (My eggs were pretty oily.) But the ingredients seemed relatively fresh and I liked how each menu item had a picture for reference. I got the salmon scramble and my boyfriend got the rice bowl with chicken. I really liked my salmon scramble but it felt like a keto dish-- it was begging for a complex carbohydrate. And my boyfriend liked his rice bowl but he said he was still really hungry afterwards. This place is adorable. I was so happy to find a well done cafe in SLC that got food, service, and ambiance on point. Usually I've only found places like this in Vegas, SF, Portland etc. so it was so refreshing to finally find something similar in SLC. It's in a really cute area and if we had to wait longer next time, we will definitely be hitting those boutiques. As for the food, my boyfriend and I got the banana French toast and it was amazing. It was the perfect amount to make you feel full enough, but not like you overate and you're not bloated after. It's definitely a light brunch where you won't get too much food. The menu had many photos and that was helpful in deciding. Service was great! The only downfall of the visit was the $8 coconut "drink" that we could have done without.
