There were two others, a man and a woman; they all seemed to be getting customers a bunch that day as well... don't know what more I can say; maybe I'll switch, maybe I'll decide to save a couple bucks at my other guy; I'm not sure, time will tell, but I'm very happy I have them a block away from home. A friend recommended this shop to me. I get a pretty simple yet specific haircut. Just the basic 2 on the sides and trim the top for a combover but I tell my barbers not to cut into the hairline bordering my forehead and keep the sideburns untouched since I have a beard now. You'd think these are simple requests but so many barbers are used to the cookie cutter haircut and they don't listen to the small request. I was nervous because these gentlemen seemed to mumble but to my surprise my barber listened and did exactly what I requested. I was looking for a barber shop nearby the new apartment I've moved into. I am originally from the suburbs.The reviews here on Yelp helped me find it and convinced me to try it. As a man, I don't need a style and I just like a haircut as I've had all my life. But it's hard to find a plain barber, not a 'stylist", in midtown or Murray Hill. The man who cut my hair was russian, and seemed very nice. But it was a major turnoff to me that when I was next in line and the previous customer left the chair, he began cutting my hair without cleaning his comb or scissors. There are all sorts of people in NYC, and not everyone has the same hygiene -and some people have fungal conditions in their scalp. I watched and said nothing, rather too taken aback and the cut was already underway. I think I saw the same thing in the chair next to mine by the other other hair cutter. I thought about reporting to the Dep't of Health -but that seems very punitive. Really I just hope for their customers they learn that they they should be much cleaner. Mark and Eddie have been cutting my hair for 6 years since I graduated college and moved into NYC in 2010. Always been a reliable monthly haircut for me and even though I moved to a different neighborhood a long time ago I still travel over to 37th and 2nd for them. I tend to go after work so may have to wait a person or two but their 7 pm weekday close time is a "soft close" since they don't want to disappoint their loyal customers. Good price haircut with rotating barbers. Nice to have a good old fashion straight razor trim up. I'm not in need of anything fancy so this place is perfect for me. Traditional barber shop dialogue and makes you feel comfortable. I like my haircuts short so I don't have to go back too soon. The barber picked up on that and made extra trim. It did look a little kiddish, but once it grew out it was perfect. I have had bad reactions to straight razors in the past, but no reaction this time. You are assured a very good, well thought out haircut for what you would pay at Supercuts. The owner, Mark, is worth waiting for, but any of the barbers, including Mark's nice usual sidekick, will do a quality job. The barbers are young enough that you don't have to worry about going if you have some more modern requests for a haircut. It doesn't have to be just "longer or shorter". One caveat: Not open Sundays, and you may have a few ahead of you on a Saturday as this place operates on a first come, first serve basis. I have been going to City Barber Shop for the past 8 months. This is a great place if you want a cheap haircut ($17 for men). I usually come in on Saturday mornings, which is usually a barbers peak time, and wait no more than 15 20 minutes. I have gotten haircuts from Mark and Pheobe and cannot really complain here. If needed, Mark can do all scissor haircuts which is a nice alternative to buzzers at usual barber shops. There is no reason to go to a fancy overpriced barber shop in NYC. read more
