Found this place after walking around UMD and looking for a local spot to eat. Saw the reviews here and went with my mother. I will admit I was skeptical when I drove up to park in another hellish mixed use development. It screamed chain and average from the outside, inside...well I was wrong. Nice decor although with a lot of QR codes scaring me (after wrestling for 8 minutes with QR code parking in back) that I might have to order that way too. Again not. We were immediately seated, super friendly server, the menu was super exciting. Authentic Szechuan dishes and some American Chinese, I wanted a lot! Had some great crab/pork soup dumplings, terrific garlic sauce eggplant, and a standout recommended ghost pepper spicy beef dish with celery, snow pea, peppers. Mom got a shrimp lo me-in. A lot of food brought home. Similar with the couple next to us. Hot pots on the menu, whole fish, so much to try. Flavors great, but especially nice service that made a place that felt like a QR card laden chain a lot more like a homey cozy place. read more

I decided to stop in one night after seeing great reviews on this place. It's very hard to find good Chinese food anywhere nowadays. First off let me say-the employees were polite and helpful. I place my order over the phone with ease, once I arrived my food was not ready just yet. The employee asked me where I'd parked, I let him know that I was parked around back in the paid parking lot. The guy stated that he'd bring out my order once it was done, so that I wouldn't risk getting a ticket in the lot. I thought that was pretty nice!!! Once I got home, I was ready to tear my Genral Tso's chicken up. Once I opened the container, I notice the color of the chicken was bright red. The sauce didn't have a brownish tint or dark red tint at all. Also, there was no trace of any spice. I'm pretty sure they use Mumbo sauce as their sauce. That definitely was not General Tso's sauce. I know mumbo sauce when I taste it. I was pissed!!!! Mainly because I had my mouth set on that dis, but also because the chicken seemed to be cooked to perfection. Eastern Gourmet is one of the better Chinese Restaurants in the College Park area. And by better, I mean truly authentic Szechuan style food. In the past few years, Szechuan cuisine has gained popularity with their emphasis on the "ma la" or numbing flavor profile emanating from the the namesake peppercorns, along with the numerous cooking methods such as hot pot and pickling. Was in the area visiting UMD College Park, and my handy Yelp app suggested trying this place since it was within walking distance of campus. And tbh, it's a good thing we decided to walk because the parking...the parking is simply abysmal. There is a small (and I mean, an odd geometrically shaped) parking garage which Eastern Gourmet shares with several other businesses. Upon turning into the parking garage, you will likely be circling around trying to avoid hitting other cars searching for a rare spot. Probably you'll have to park along a neighborhood street or even in one of the UMD lots. The interior is quite modern with high ceilings, neutral color pallette, and Chinese themed art work on the walls. I did like the mix of seating options, which ranged from long communal style tables for larger groups, to booth seating for parties of 1-5 persons. The server arrived at the table promptly and placed our order via a tablet (as is the trend nowadays). We started with an appetizer of the steamed chicken with Szechuan spicy sauce. Note, despite the title, this dish is served cold. But the chicken was prepared properly and retained nice moistness and flavor. The accompanying "spicy" topping had more pronounced notes of Oyster sauce and chili oil. This dish was bettter the next day popped into the microwave for about a minute, once warmed up. The main entree was a classic Szechuan dish, Stir-Fried Pork with Green pepper. Pork was cut into thin strips, and then Wok tossed with bell and strips of spicy chili peppers. The flavor was outstanding. Not too salty and just the right amount of spiciness and heat. Pair this with some rice, and this tasted just as I remembered as a kid. BTW - Eastern Gourmet only provides one small bowl of steamed rice with each entree. At $1.50 for every extra bowl, that's a bit pricey, but on par for what places are charging nowadays. Service was fine; nothing bad and as expected. Food arrived in a timely manner, water glasses were refilled before they were emtpy, and take home boxes for leftovers were provided without needing to be requested. If I'm in the area again, I'll be back to try some of their specialities such as the dry hot pot, and steamed fish. I loved how my noodle soup was secured for traveling and its components were separated. Overall the soup was really good and perfect for this cold weather. My son always raves about this restaurant. We got carry out from them and it was not really that good honestly. However, that was an hour drive home for the carry out so it could change the taste a lot. Today we ate at the restaurant and got house special fish fillet, dry fried string beans, mapo tofu, and double cooked pork. All the dishes are large portions. There were 3 of us and a good amount to take home. I guess they have to have large portions being in a college town. The string beans were tender and nicely seasoned. The mapo tofu is not overly spicy but numbing enough over the house served white rice. The fish fillets also have a nice coating of seasoning. The only dish that was so-so for me was the double cooked pork. This is a simple seat down restaurant with server coming over to take your order and serve your food afterwards. I stopped in for a casual meal and left satisfied, with leftovers in hand and my tastebuds happily tingling. I started with the soup dumplings and dry cabbage. The dumplings were your typical fare. The cabbage arrived still sizzling, just off the wok. The taste was great and offered just enough spice. I also ordered additional dishes to go which were packed quickly and efficiently (no spills on the ride home). Service was polite but a little passive at first. I had to flag someone down to place my order, and no drink options beyond water were offered (they do offer them I saw them on the way out). That said, once my order was in, the staff became more attentive, checking in and making sure I was taken care of. The dining space is clean, open, and comfortably quiet, which made the experience feel relaxed and unhurried. There was a steady stream of customers but nothing overwhelming--just enough traffic to let you know it's a trusted neighborhood spot. I ordered the ghost pepper chicken dish and it was super spicy, which is rare to find in American restaurants. Just what I needed! Their dry beans are also amazing. When my friend and I went to pay, we requested to split the check. I told them my dishes, and they put my friend's food on my card instead. Super careless. Make sure you double, triple check they've got it all right when you pay. Came again, ordered their house fried fish. Again, great food, really tasty, though on the oilier side as to be expected with Chinese food. I made sure to double check with the bill splitting and they split it correctly this time. I wish restaurants like this were in VA! So good and has the perfect amount of numbing spice and bold flavors. We ate family style so I'm so happy I got to try a lot of their dishes. Scallion pancake duck roll - 4/5 moist duck with a really nice crispy skin and wrapper! It's similar flavor to a pecking duck roll but I think tastier in the scallion pancake Pork soup dumplings - 3.75/5 the skin on top is too thick but around the rest it is fine. The soup is pretty flavorful and meat is moist and yummy! Egg drop soup - 2.5/5 standard good egg drop soup. Nothing special but nostalgic :) Sichuan beef noodle soup - 3.75/5 super flavorful and has a great amount of mala. The meat was not that memorable though. The soup was complex but felt like it was missing just a little something Mapo tofu - 4.5/5 perfect size tofu so the tofu taste does not overpower the sauce. This is a full sit-down restaurant next to a rather tasty boba tea spot. It used to be Bobby's burgers for the longest, but they're gone now! My parents and I came because I wanted to give them a taste of Chinese food beyond their usual carryout. We were the only ones in there, so we got seated right away. It was a delight to see hand sanitizer at the table. After looking through the menus, we used that and placed our orders. Mom & Dad were shocked at the prices (quite higher than their carryout), but I knew we were in for a treat. We got a few orders of spring rolls, Dad and I got dumplings, and Mom got mapo tofu. I feel like my dumplings have come with sauces at other restaurants, but maybe those are the fried ones. Besides, these dumplings didn't necessarily need any with the soup inside. Mom got mapo tofu that I couldn't help but taste... and it was a lot too. It was delightfully spicy, and fantastic. This Sichuan restaurant opened in March 2024 which sits at the lower level of the apartment complex near U of Maryland campus. It has a parking lot but it's a little bit confusing to customer whether/how to pay for parking. Food is OK with reasonable pricing, but not anything exceeding expectation. The rice is on the house which is good. The spicey wok worth trying and their vegetables tastes good. It's also close to the metro station which is a plus. read more

Interior was modern looking and clean. Menu is very extensive. While they have some American/Chinese fare, most of it authentic Sichuan style. They also have frog and pig ear on their menu (not seen at every Chinese restaurant). Dry hot pot is another offering, as well as many spicy dishes. Fear not, there are many non-spicy choices like dumplings, buns, different types of Chinese vegetables and soups. Ws had the mapo tofu (by default had no meat) as well as the boiled fish filets in spicy sauce. The mapo tofu was very good. While it was spicy, it was not numbing or overwhelming. The spicy boiled fish was also very good. Plenty of peppercorn, chili oil and cumin to go around. The entree also included cucumber chunks and bean sprouts. I also saw slices of pink preserved meat (ham or spam) thrown in (very different). Not quite sure what it was (haven't eaten spam in many years). Delicious! The food was amazing and I can't wait to go back. We tried a bunch of different dishes - pork soup dumplings, pickled radish, cucumbers with garlic sauce, kung pao chicken, crispy fried pork ribs, pea shoots, and a spicy beef noodle soup. I think the soup dumplings were my favorite - the broth was very hearty and the dumpling dough was just right, not thick and doughy but strong enough not to break in the steamer. The pea shoots were delicious and having crunchy greens with garlic complemented the crunchy pork ribs (get those too!). Even though the ribs were fried, they were so crispy and yet not great at all. The pickled radish was crunchy with a bit of heat, and cucumbers were a refreshing combo with the spicy flavors on the table. Both the kung pao chicken and beef noodle soup definitely had that mouth tingling/numbing feeling that I've always read about but never actually encountered before. Wow! To be honest, the beef noodle soup was a bit too spicy for me, but a spice enthusiast would totally love it. The kung pao chicken was much more my speed, with chunks of carrot and peanuts and just enough spice to really make it delicious without my whole face going completely numb. The other great thing is that even though you have to pay for parking, it's only a dollar an hour. That seems pretty reasonable. It was also clean and nicely decorated inside. My order was hot, fresh and delicious. I will most definitely have to order from them again and try some of their other dishes. In addition they are very generous with the portion size. My friend got a recommendation from someone to try this place so we hopped in the car and rode out to College Park. Parking is annoying FYI. The lot behind the restaurant was packed, but maybe it was student move in weekend or something. We got there around lunch time and it wasn't very busy inside so it wasn't too loud. We were starving so we immediately ordered the chili wontons (amazing!) and the shrimp, pork and chive dumplings. The dumplings were pretty good but not my favorite ever. My friend got the combo lo mein which she liked once she had them bring her the chili sauce. I ordered the Dandan noodles which were different from ones I had gotten from another restaurant. This one was in a broth and I think I prefer the version that's not as soupy. The flavor was really good though. Very spicy. I was sweating lol! The food is excellent for the most part and even the not excellent food is good. Service is pretty good especially for only two people taking orders and bringing food out, there is a little difficulty with English, but our large group orders have always been correct. Took my 2nd year Terp back to school and decided to stop by this place for lunch. Eastern Gourmet is relatively new, opened about a year ago. It is conveniently located a few steps from my daughter's apartment building. It was quite busy for 2PM Monday. The menu is very extensive. We ordered several appetizers as well as noodle soups. We love the Szechuan Beef Noodle Soup, the Pork Soup Dumplings, and the Stir Fried Bean Sprouts (AKA pea shoots). On the other hand, the Sour Beef Noodle Soup had too much vinegar flavor. The Scallion Duck Roll was cold and had more cucumbers than duck. The Spicy Wonton had a weird spicy sweet flavor. A common theme here is that all the dishes are very well seasoned. read more

Ordered delivery on NYE. Aiight so boom - I'd spent the day (if not the week) planning and cooking for our family's Karamu. The flavor profile is delightful. A savory sauce with a hint of sweetness to balance and a nice spicy kick. Not so much that you hurt lol but a nice slow heat that tickles your spicy senses. Lastly the fried rice. FINALLY a place that knows how to make fried rice. Their fried rice is made like restaurants used to do in the 80s/90s! Yum! It's not this mushy yellow rice with just beansprouts or onions that you see at so many other places. Their FR has eggs, peas, onions, carrots, and seasoning/FLAVOR! Will definitely order again. Tried Eastern Gourmet recently and it seems like I've found my spot for good Chinese in this area. I had the Szechuan style stir fried fish, a dish which oddly, doesn't appear on the carry out menu I took home, and it was fantastic. Only reason they lose a star is no alcohol, and Chinese food this spicy and delicious absolutely screams out for at least one, but preferably two or three ICE COLD beers. Interior is kind of spare, not much to look at, but no big deal. It's in a big office building and you have to pay to park, but it's cheap -- dollar an hour. My niece goes here often since she's on UMD's campus everyday. Tonight, she got carryout and came to see me! We had the scallion pancakes with duck and soup dumplings. Also had the Fuzhou style dry noodles and jelly noodles in chili sauce. The scallion pancakes with duck are delish! I asked that next time she brings food from Eastern Gourmet over to bring several orders of this! Soup dumplings were still really tasty and juicy despite the hour to drive to my place. I bet these are really yummy hot while dining in. The jelly noodles in chili sauce were very spicy. Didn't realize how spicy it was until after I had taken a huge bite. These weren't my favorite. The Fuzhou style dry noodles were okay. Not a lot of flavor. Ended up mixing it with the sauce from the jelly noodles to make it a little bit tastier. Will eventually make the trip out to College Park to dine in. There's lots of other things on the menu I want to try. read more

Hidden gem alert!!! If you like Chinese food and like more of their traditional dishes, you will undoubtedly enjoy Eastern Gourmet. The food arrived very fast; dishes were served as the food became ready, which we liked. We were starving, so we didn't have spare time. Everything was delicious! We requested the heat to be adjusted since my family cannot deal with spicy food, but chili oil can be served on the side. They also have a more American Chinese menu (orange chicken, beef broccoli, etc). I am looking forward to trying those Chinese-American classics. Tip: you will see Bobby's burger sign still outside. Grand Opening on March 1st! The menu has different types of items including steamed Shanghai style soup dumplings, authentic Chinese entrees, fried rice/noodles for simple meal, and casual food, such as Chinese grilled fish, and Spicy Stir-fry Pot. The food is the best Chinese food in PG county. It is a brand new restaurant. The environment is really good. Since it is on the ground floor of a mixed-use student apartment building, you can use the retail parking lot at the back of the building. Very easy access. Even though it was really business for the dinner time, the food comes out quicker than my expectation. I have to say the waiters might be overloaded, but they still kept a good practice. All service requests were responded within a timely manner. Overall experience is great. I look forward to visiting it again. read more
