I must say that we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food at the Black Pearl. We were passing thru Birmingham and decided we better eat before getting out of town onto the back roads and we're sure glad we did. We lived in San Francisco for years and became spoiled by great Asian food. We usually have to drive to Atlanta to get decent Asian food but now we have a good place in Birmingham, also. We looked on Yelp and were directed here - off at the next exit (.1 mile) so we swung off and the restaurant was right there. We played it safe with Spring rolls, Sizzling rice soup, and MooShu pork and all were very good. Not the very best we've ever had but certainly close enough!! (Our standards are extremely high!). Okay, so clearly on this app it says "Order Delivery." Well I made an order and placed it at 7:30. Here it is 9:30, the restaurant is closed, and we have no food. They have already deducted $40 from our bank account. So I called and luckily someone answered. I explained the situation to the guy and he was just being so rude. He said they DO NOT have a contract with yelp so they never got out order. He said sorry, we cannot make the food you ordered, we are closed. (Even though they already took our money.) I am livid. Now yelp is closed until Monday and we are out of our money and have no food. He said he can't give me a refund and for me to call customer service. Do not use this delivery service. We waited over 2 hours for our delivery and when we called to inquire about the food I was told it was my fault for not calling them direct and ordering through Yelp. They were very rude and lied and told me my food was on the way., 25 mins later food still not there , called again and was told by another associate it was not there fault, it was mine for going through Yelp. Next time they told me I should call doorstep delivery direct. I will be asking for a credit or I will dispute this charge with the credit company., service is unacceptable! read more

My boyfriend and I both had a pad Thai from this place. Him, the chicken pad Thai and I, the shrimp pad Thai. It was overly expensive and not even that great. It tasted just like a normal pad thai, maybe even a little worse. We both could not finish our food because it was just that bad. My son and I have gone here to dine in quite a few times. Always very satisfied with everything. We ordered food to go tonight and the sweet and sour chicken does not come with an egg roll. And only came with a "small" serving of rice. After spending $16 dollars with too much chicken and no where near enough rice my husband went back to get hot mustard and to request a little bit more rice. The manager did not give him any more rice. I called and she would not listen to me, told me to listen to her and explained I was the only complaint ever... not worth the price, portion size was off and the customer service was horrible. This place has the absolute best noodle bowl I have had anywhere. Depending what I am in the mood for dictates which Chinese restaurant I patronize. When it comes to noodles, this is the place to go. I am also a fan of their spring rolls, and no complaints with their special hot and sour soup. Prices are great, especially for lunch. The food is really good and the service is great. The servers and manager are always so polite. Unfortunately, the Health Rating Score keeps going down last few visits. The one at the Colonnade has a score of 90, and the one at Lakeshore has 88. Some health violations have been observed with those scores. read more

This is a great place with great food. It looks like takeout only when you walk inside but they have seating around to the right. I had the Kung Pao and it was very good. My friend got the Spicy Chicken and it was phenomenal. Not saucy, but fried and spicy. It would be even better to dip in some sauce like a General Tsk sauce. Just ate here and had a great experience. The food was very good, and prices were fair. Though, the thing that really stood out to me here was the insanely quick and attentive service. The two young women that were serving during lunch were on point, warm, and courteous the entire time; they threw it over the top to make it review worthy for me. As one example, the table that I happened to be sitting at had a slight wobble to it that I didn't notice; however, she did and actually took the initiative to adjust it for me. Got take out last night, excellent customer service, good food. Couldn't have asked for nicer staff. Thought about giving Four stars because the food was kind of bland, but we didn't order very exotic dishes so I'm leaving it at 5. We ordered the teriyaki chicken appetizer, egg rolls, sesame chicken and orange chicken, both with fried rice. The rice was the most bland. The orange chicken was flavorful but had no kick, only sweet. However, everything had a clean taste to it - no old oil or frozen breaded chicken here. We will get take out here again based on the pleasant customer service alone, but next time I will venture into more exciting parts of the menu. read more

I CRAVE real Chinese food. I grew up in LA and went to college in San Francisco and i wake up some days smelling salt pepper squid in my nose! On one such day after relocating to Birmingham, I dared to research until I found a down home Chinese restaurant that was not going to insult me with crappy sweet and sour dishes or tacky sweet glazey fried chicken nuggets. Halleluia I found Black Pearl. There food made this Asian girls heart melt. Just like being home! Black Bean ANYTHING is great. Two people can eat here family style for under $25 and get variety and filled tummies! The sweet owner at the front was so humble and eager to impress, that I labored to explain each detail of appreciation I had for the chefs choices. GREAT JOB. If Alabamaians don't know it, I do. Very poor service....second time going and young waitress was very rude both times. Went back a second time thinking I'd get a different waiter/waitress or thinking the first time was just a coincidence...but, no...it wasn't. Both times she failed to smile or approach me with warm hello or how may I help you as if she appreciated me being there as a customer. Instead both times she had a frown on her face as if I wasn't welcome or was interrupting her break?? She also barely opened her mouth as she asked me what I wanted to drink and as she eventually asked me what I wanted to eat. However, I couldn't help but to notice that she treated non-minority customers completely opposite (greeting them with pleasant smiles and speaking clearly and loud enough for them to hear the first time)..which is surprising being that the waitress was a minority and should know that all customers deserve to be treated fairly and with the same level of appreciation. Let me preface this review by explaining that I haven't lived in the Birmingham area for long, going on about seven months. I love, love, love Asian cuisine and have been searching for a place that measures up to the tastiness and just overall fresh and good food that two of my hometown restaurants have. So far I've tried about four places, this being my fifth. I wasn't impressed. I ordered the egg drop soup, honey chicken, and an order of cheese wontons. The soup was okay, but you could tell that the wonton strips had been sitting around for a while. They tasted very stale. The cheese wontons weren't a complete throwaway but I definitely wouldn't order them again. Wayyyy, too much cream cheese and not sweetened nearly enough and once again, you could tell they were old. The honey chicken was absolutely unappealing. I have this thing, when I'm eating like this (unhealthy and all) I always try to get food that's absolutely delicious. Because, let's be honest, if I'm going to add inches to my already thick hips it better be worth it. This food wasn't worth it at all. The honey sauce on the chicken tasted like sweetened water, the breading was hard and unseasoned, and the actual meat was dry as a bone. This was a very disappointing experience. I had high hopes for this place with all the positive reviews and it being so close to my apartment. I hate to say it, but I definitely won't be back again. read more

The food is good but be warned against ordering and paying online. I ordered online for my lunch order today and was charged online by BeyondMenu, then they made me pay again at the restaurant. I had my receipt printed, and they had a paper that clearly showed "Do not charge customer. Customer already paid online.", but they wouldn't give me my food without paying again.
