eBikes was one of my favorite stores in Portland. No more. They are the local dealer for Royal Dutch Gazelle, a world famous company that makes great "town" bicycles. In 2018, I bought a beautiful, hand painted Dutch "Omafiets" from them for $1300. (I get compliments on this bicycle at least once a week. If I only needed transportation, I would have bought a $200 Huffy instead.) For the next two years, I occasionally brought the bicycle to eBikes for tire and tube changes and annual maintenance checks. Service was excellent, staff was friendly and prices were fair. Riding the bicycle was a joy. I told people where I bought it. All that changed abruptly in November 2020. I brought the bicycle in for an annual check. The staff was surly, rude and combative. Twice I was told, "Listen, we are an ebike store. We're doing you a favor just by looking at this thing." (It's a "pedal" bicycle.) "But, I bought it here!" "Yes, that's why we're doing you the favor." Two weeks and $125 later I picked up the bicycle. I noticed new scratches in the paint and pointed them out. The "kid" who handed the bicycle back to me apathetically told me, "It's a bike. They get beat up." I figured it was pointless to complain; so, took the bicycle and left. After I got home, I noticed that the bicycle was actually in worse shape than before the annual check. I sent a letter with descriptions of the problems -- and photos -- to the store owner: squeaking front wheel, squeaking chain, paint damage, broken brake cable attachment, missing cap on a tube. For $125? He graciously: apologized for the poor work; refunded the $125; had their best mechanic work on it to correct the problems I described (plus one that I said was my fault). And, he sent a van to pick up and return the return the bicycle. Very nice. Mechanical problems fixed. But, after the bicycle was returned, I noticed more scratches in the paint. I sent them another letter and more pictures. The store responded by saying I made the new scratches. My advice? They are selling a great product (Gazelle) and the owner is nice; but, at some point, you are going to have to deal with their service department. Before you send a bicycle there, MAKE SURE you: 1) Take detailed pictures of the bicycle for future reference. You may need them. And, 2) Before you accept the bicycle back, do a THOROUGH inspection and go for a test ride. They DO have people in their service department who know what they're doing. But, there's no guarantee that one of them is going to work on your bicycle. I also get the impression that the bicycles are being moved around by non-mechanics who are lackadaisical about their work. read more

Brought my ebike in with a non working throttle and they said they would try to get to it in a day or so. Got a call two hours later that it was ready. Apparently they looked at it for a sec and discovered it was a case of just moving a sensor back into the proper place. Came in and they explained it so that I know what to do myself. Why didn't the manufacturer put this in when they sold it. So simple but not intuitive. No charge. Thanks guys! You could have charged me for an hour and I would not have known the difference. Went to this store the other day on a whim. I had never heard of ebikes, but i sure am glad I went there. These bikes are awesome!! It is the perfect way to ride a bike with a little, or alot, of assistance. i think I may fall in love with riding bikes again and I am 51 years old!! I did test drive one and was instantly in love. Robert was the person that helped us and he was very knowledgeable and very informative. He has a great personality and a passion for these bikes. You must test drive a bike or rent one. It is the only way to know what you like. This place has a very good selection of bikes in a variety of prices. This place is worth the trip if you want to know what ebikes are or are seriously thinking of buying one.Thank you eBike for letting me realize I can fall in love with the freedom that bike riding, with a little assistance, can give me! read more

We rented some ebikes from The EBike Store to do a Meet-Up around Portland (which I also highly recommend). It was super fun. The store staff and owner were very friendly and let us try out many (many) bikes both before and after our tour. After searching other stores and testing out several models and sizes, The EBike Store owner loaned them some bikes for a couple of days to be sure they were choosing the right model and size. Finally my husband and a friend bought eBikes from The EBike Store. We feel the value and selection was good, the service was outstanding and our loyalty has been earned. There was no pressure or rushing, allowing them to take their time to make a good decision. read more

These guys know their stuff, and they're willing and able to help with stuff they don't sell. I wanted a cheap trike and found one, but needed some help with it - Wake and his crew have been fantastic to work with. And now that we have our e-bikes, both my wife and I are back to commuting to work on bike! They may be across town from where I live, but this is the place to go. Thanks guys. read more

Fantastic customer service at this shop. Everyone was extremely friendly, knowledgable, and patient with answering all my questions about ebikes. They allowed my husband and I to take the bikes out for a joy ride for an hour, and then offered a rental service! I rented a bike for 6 days, and when I returned I bought a bike! Thanks to their great service I feel confident in my purchase and now ride my bike more than ever. This place is awesome. read more

Everyone at the E bike store are friendly and helpful, Wake, Jeff, Robert. I stop in when I hear an odd noise with my bike or it needs service. They are welcoming and quick to test drive and sort out if the problem is real or nothing to worry about. I really love my EZ Sprint. I commute 20 miles a day to work and it makes me smile as I zip up the hills. Whenever someone asks about my electric bike i tell them how great it is, and suggest they go the to E bike store. I hope to trade up in the near future and will not go anywhere but The E bike store. read more

Owner is knowledgable, yes, but COMPLETELY without organization and even a hint of customer relations. Any and all repairs take forever and you will be hard pressed to get a reasonable explanation...PLUS, repairs are not always successful. Owner does not exactly lie to you...he just doesn't return calls and, if reached, won't answer questions and hangs up on you. And realize, he does this to me, a person who touted him itniially and pays in cash without negotiating price. Electric bikes are glorious and fun and practical...and Portland STILL needs a good dealer for them. read more

I have been biking (regular-style) a triangle between the Alberta Arts district, Lloyd Center, and North Portland. Often I am hauling a small person behind me. I wanted to make my daily commute less of a mental hurdle, but didn't want to buy an eBike because I love my KHS commuter. Wake and Richard encouraged me to purchase a $1200 kit that would upgrade my bike to an electric, and I'm so glad they did! Now I am cruising up hills and on long straightaways. What a rush! Now my bike is definitely the smarter choice to take on these crowded Portland streets. I beat morning rush hour traffic going downhill, I can match cars going uphill, and I don't have to pay for parking! Plus I can walk my bike through intersections and get through as a pedestrian. Hands down, it's the most fun way to get around a congested city. read more

I've been commuting to work (5.5 miles each way) by bike since 2007. In the last two years I have found it increasingly difficult to get motivated to ride as it's uphill all the way home and it's especially bad when it's hot and I have a headwind the whole way. I've been finding more and more excuses not to ride until a friend let me try his ebike. I'd been thinking about one for a while and just one uphill ride on my friend's ebike sold me. I went into The eBike Store and was greeted by the owner, Wake, who couldn't have been nicer. He took me out for a test ride on a Raleigh Detour. When we got to a nice steep hill he very patiently allowed me to ride it a half dozen times rather than trying to rush me back to the store. He then let me try his bike (I don't remember which brand) on the hill. After we got back to the store he let me take out a Felt by myself. I wasn't ready to purchase a bike that day so Wake told me about a 3 day rental deal for $99 with the rental fee going to the purchase price if I bought one. The following Friday I went in and asked if I could instead rent 3 different bikes for one day each so I could get a real feel for the different bikes. They gladly accommodated me. I tried a Gazelle (which I liked), a Kalkhoff (which I didn't like) and finally, the same Raleigh Detour that I originally rode. I ended up buying the Raleigh and I love it. Wake's employees, Robert and Jeff were super helpful setting up my new bike with all the bells and whistles that I wanted and everyone is so friendly. I would recommend this business to anyone who is in the market for an eBike. read more

This place is so great! I bought my first electric bike there in August, and Wake (the owner) went out of his way to make it a great buying experience for me and my kids who were interested in the bike too. When the bike bags that I bought didn't fit well, he switched them out and spent his time making sure that the bike was safe and functioning properly. Terrible experience. I brought my electric bike in for servicing because it stopped working. He began by making disparaging remarks about the fact that the bike was of Chinese manufacture. Eventually he told me he was 95% sure the problem was a faulty electrical circuit cube relay, and that the only place to purchase the component was in China, and only in bulk (in increments of 1000). I suspected this was not true, because he seemed bewildered as to even what remedial steps were necessary to open up the bike for examination. I thought perhaps he was trying to portray the problem as unsolvable because of inaccessible parts, when in fact he didn't have the skill level necessary to fix the problem. He told me if I got him the replacement part, all he had to do was "solder it in," and that it would take just a couple minutes. Anyway, I contacted a manufacturer in China, ordered the part, received 5 of them (4 for backups) in 3 days, and presented him with the replacement part. His jaw dropped, which let me know he was truly gaming me. He held on to the bike for several more days (instead of the "couple minutes" he advised me it would take to solder the component in) and when I received no call from him, I called to see what was up. He told me that, oh by the way, he can't fix the bike (no surprise) and that I could come and get it. When I showed up, he gave the bike back to me in pieces, with no apology, or acknowledgment that he had deprived me of my transportation to work for a week and a half with nothing to show for it.
