i've been going here since it was located around the corner. since then, i've had a wide variety of experiences. they can be very neighborly and attentive, but also dismissive and snarky. which is fine, i get it, they deal in customer service and it can be frustrating. however, the last time i went in was the last time i'm going in. i brought my bike in on a tuesday afternoon around 3pm. a chain link had snapped. so had the front derailleur cable. the female owner of the establishment greeted me kindly at the door. i explained the situation and asked if they could fix it that day (they're open until 8pm) she said they were short a bike mechanic and very backed up. too busy to fix it or give me a quote. unfortunately, they're closed on wednesday so this meant i wouldn't have my bike back until thursday afternoon. i requested they call me with an estimate before working on the bike. i also explained that it was just the quick link on the chain that had snapped and that i'd prefer they replace it, rather than the entire chain. she said they'd see if they could. ok wednesday passes. thursday i get a call. it's gonna be $60 plus tax i know i'm being overcharged but ask for the breakdown anyway. one chain= $20 labor=$10 one cable= $10 labor=$20 i don't really feel like getting ripped off or engaging in a debate as to why they have to replace the entire chain so i say, ok thanks, don't fix it, i'll come by later today and pick it up. fine. fine. i pick up my bike. female owner asks me why i'm not having them finish the job. because the other place around the corner and down the street is going to do it for half the price. she looks disappointed but also pissed off at me for having the warewithal to call another shop and compare prices/services. well i wish you would have told us you were looking somewhere else. i did, on the phone. i really wanted to give them my biz but how can i when they're charging me double for the same job. do you mind if i ask you where you're taking it? recycle a bike. oh, well i'm happy to give them the business but i'm just annoyed b/c the bike sat here for 2 days taking up space. you were closed wed. actually we had an event oh did you? and that is relevant to my situation how? is it worth losing a customer who lives across the street over $60? was the bike really taking up that much space? also, why didn't you just replace the quick link? that would have been the right thing to do. then we wouldn't even be having this conversation. and i'd be back, again and again. i wheeled my bike out the door, dismayed. her annoyance palpable but at what? overcharging me and being called out on it? losing a $60 sale? who knows. who cares. obviously i'll never be back. they don't want me anyway. not unless i'm wiling to be overcharged.

I had been riding my bike with the seat too low for 3 weeks. I had lost a bit of air in my back tire. My aching knees screamed that it was time to raise that seat and put some air in the tires. When I asked how much money I could give them, they should their heads and wished me a nice day. In the less 5 minutes I was on the road again. Thank you, Redbeard Bikes!

Ilya answered all of my questions completely and was quick to offer two very high end bicycles for test rides.

On my Giant, they found a backwards jockey wheel, but I was also charged for derailleur adjustments multiple times and later learned the actual front shifting issue was a bent chainring. At one point it was suggested that I might not be shifting correctly, but the problem turned out to be mechanical. They also adjusted my saddle and stripped the bolt in the process. After multiple visits and additional issues, I lost confidence in the quality and completeness of the work.

Instead of helping, he gave me attitude and sarcastically asked, "What's 700C?" Before I could answer, I clarified my tire is 27 1/4. He then rattled off a bunch of other sizes before finally going to the back to get one. When he returned, he handed me a single tube, priced at $10. I asked if there were other brands or options, and again, more attitude. He told me it's all rubber anyway and questioned why I even cared. At checkout, I gave him cash and asked if he needed anything else. He said I owed him 88 cents, so I gave him a dollar, and he threw the change into my hand so carelessly that it bounced off and fell onto the counter. No apology, no decency. Do yourself a favor: skip this place. There are plenty of other bike shops where the staff will treat you with basic respect, actually help you, and not act like you're bothering them by being there.
