Great staff. Always happy to support them. Omakase at the sushi bar. Uni is always amazing. Highly recommend.

Lunch special review: delicious but tiny! The price is right at $19 (the sushi is sliced deceivingly thin!) but next time I will know to supplement with additional pieces and rolls, so it'll wind up being more like a $40 lunch. A great option if that's in your budget!

twice the price for half sized nigiri.

No. I showed up to an almost empty restaurant at 7pm on a saturday night, and the guy seated me at the only table in the entire place that had no place setting. Then proceeded to not bring me a place setting at all. No napkin, no chopsticks. He brought me the miso soup I ordered, but I had no way to mix it without chopsticks. So I couldnt' drink it. And i couldn't get his attention. So after a while, I had to get up and walk over to any other table and take the place setting from that table myself, so I could then stir and drink my miso soup. I looked at the menu and thats when I realized the prices were twice that of any other sushi restaurant in Santa Monica. The cheapest nigiri was $11. Thats your salmon, or your tuna. Anything pricier started at $15 and up. Even Noma down the street was only $5-$7 for these same items. I put in my order for 5 sets of nigiri (2 peices a set, you know the deal). And the waiter proceeded to bring me the absolute smallest peices of sushi I have ever seen in my life. Literally half the size of a nigiri at any other restaurant. See the photo for reference. Each peice was spread with such a sharp tasting sauce that I couldn't taste the fish at all. In the end I did something to a peice of salmon (my absolute favorite) that I have never done before, and put soy sauce on it. I found that the "sauce" on the salmon wasn't even sauce. It was some kind of premade strip of flavoring. Something gel-like that I was able to just peel off with my fingers. I did so on the second peice so that I could try tasting the salmon without the overbearing sauce, and thats when I learned why they had covered over the fish with condiments. It was that farmed alaskan salmon you can buy at Costco, thats perfectly servicable as salmon, but also flavorless. I gave him my card, and he brought me the check to sign. Thats when I realized.... Where is my fucking card. He kept my card. I had to ask for it back. After all that I couldn't stomach my usual 20% tip. So I gave a minimum of 16%. So that was a total of $72 for 10 half sized nigiri, terrible service, in a dead restaurant. The food has left such a lack of impact on my stomach that I had to drive through McDonalds, which was, fortunately, just a few blocks down the street. I had tried to go to Noma, but they were to busy so I ended up here. Now I understand why this place was almost completely empty at 7pm on a saturday night. Now I've learned the lesson so many other locals have. I should have waited the 15 minutes for a seat at Noma. The good? Fast service? Friendly weight staff. The miso soup was tasty. Quiet (because of no clientelle). The Unagi was tastey, but you can't really mess that up. Eel is the "orange chicken" of sushi.

Was... surprised. The lunch special is a tremendous value, and for $5 more you can get a miso soup and edamame added. Dine-in is well spaced due to COVID-19, and they were not only empty for a late lunch, but they had a seat right by an open window. And for a piddling $23, I had five pieces of sushi (maguro, sake, hirame, fluke, hamachi, I think it was) plus a blue crab hand roll. All quite fresh, and at that price, a superb value. Sure, you go up to the 2nd floor, the space is kinda spartan looking, the ambiance casual, but it all fits.

This spot... let me tell you when I say I'm DEF gonna be a repeat customer. My kinda hidden vibe Cleanliness: Clean AF Social Distanced- Not a spec of dirt in sight Ambiance: Super simple/ minimal decor/ open 2nd floor windows/ business white kinda look Food: FRESH! Beautiful sushi choices Not just that boring salmon/ toro stuff. Tho, the salmon was out of this world amazing! Hands down best raw salmon I've had in years. Disclaimer: I usually don't like raw salmon (only like cooked) but this salmon... no words. Absolutely blew my mind. Service: Perfect- Server Shin & Chef Toshi were kind, helpful, & all around just awesome! No stuck up vibes here. Ordered: Live Shrimp- Head in Miso Soup (FAVE) Shrimp Eggs- Drooling yum Salmon- MUST! Shima Aji- Mackerel Barracuda- NEED Butterfish Anago aka Sea Eel Sayori aka needlefish YUM Salmon Skin Handrolls Cucumber Sunonomo Green Teas: Coulda been better honestly Large Perrier Extra Ginger: $3 (large mound) absolutely worth it Ty Echigo team Ps: Let me know when you get hotoru Ika, Iwashi, & kohada again plzzz hehe ;)

Echigo is a hidden gem on the westside. Tucked away on the 2nd floor of a small plaza, the friendly server continuously keep your glasses filled and you get quality sushi. I like this restaurant because it is not pretentious, nothing fancy, but just quality fish. Happy Hour Monday - Thursday 5:30-7:00p, stop by for a beer or take advantage of their specials. Alternatively, you can try the Omakase. Parking is available on both the ground level and underground. Just be careful going down because the space can be tight. Definitely worth trying if you are in the area.

I got there with my mother and was greeted by a very lovely gentleman named Clark. He told us we could sit wherever so we seated ourselves in the outside area. He came over right away with the menus and asked if we had been there before to which we responded had not. He went over the menu with us and answered any questions we had regarding the menu. He was very sociable and friendly. We chatted with him and put in an order for the Kiwi Chowder. I ordered a Modelo and my mother ordered a glass of orange blend wine. He came over with the drinks a while later and the Kiwi chowder and have us plenty of time to sit and enjoy the dish before we ordered our main courses. The kiwi chowder was delicious and came with little crackers. The clams and mussels were so tasty and the Ora King Salmon was a nice treat. After a while he came back and served me the Fisherman's Mixed Basket and my mother got the Fish tacos with fish of the day for them being Sword Fish. The fisherman's basket was amazing and paired perfectly with my beer. I had never had clams, mussels, snapper, and oysters all together and they were so good I wish I could have them more frequently. The place was very cute and sat quietly with good music playing. Not current music but music that really fit the place and set the vibe. I will be coming back here and if you ever go, there is no bad choice for the fish, the service is stupendous and I haven't gotten anything like it in forever, and if you meet Clark enjoy a friendly conversation with him.

It was my first time here, and I'm so glad I discovered this place! The seafood was incredibly fresh, and we honestly enjoyed every dish we ordered. The highlight for me was definitely the oysters -- they were so good that I had to order a second round . Another standout was the steamed mussels in white wine and garlic sauce. The mussels were huge, juicy, and packed with flavor. I was also very impressed by the miso black cod. It came with mushrooms in a rich miso sauce that paired perfectly with rice. Everything tasted comforting and well-balanced. Our server was also very thoughtful and friendly. He split the clam chowder into four smaller portions for our group, which made it much easier to share. One thing to note: the seafood market opens early, but the restaurant itself opens at 11 AM. And if you end up loving the fish from your meal, you can actually buy the same fresh marinated fish directly from the market to take home. Such a cool concept!

After this first experience, this place is about a solid three stars for me. I may come back again if in Santa Monica... I am still a bit under the weather and drove here because I wanted some kind of seafood soup. They offer three different kinds of soups which I appreciated! There is NE clam chowder, Manhattan clam chowder and a fish chowder. Since I dont always see fish chowder on the menu, I ordered a small bowl. I wanted a larger bowl and a place to sit down and eat it but the place was packed for lunch and I didnt feel like grabbing a spot at their bar as I needed to get back on the road, so just went with the small (and I am glad I did - read on to see why). They have a funny system here because you only order their menu items from a cashier in the back, but then take a number if you want fresh seafood. I wanted to try their Hawaiian style poke and cashier had me go and grab a number. I grabbed a number and it wasn't busy so I was served immediately. For a 1/4 lb of Hawaiian poke, it was about $9.50. Whats also strange is that I grabbed my soup (did not pay for it in the back), and my Hawaiian poke and then paid up front. Everything came close to $20. I sat in my car, (which thank goodness, this seafood market has its own parking lot, so that was greatly appreciated), and dug into my soup. Unfortunately, the soup was pretty bland and needed a bit more salt. But, I will say that the ingredients used in the fish chowder were all very fresh, and fish wasnt overcooked, but it needed to be seasoned more. Hawaiian poke was great, excellent taste. Overall, a so so experience, I would have liked better scenery to eat my food being I was very close to the beach and wished I had a more seasoned fish chowder. I could be convinced to come back and give it a second try, but I think I might prefer to visit Malibu Seafood which isnt too far from here and has great ocean views.

The outside of the place is fine, but don't ever walk in. We should have left when our shoes stuck to the cement floor. It had been mopped that day I am sure, but it has not been cleaned in a long time. It was just sticky. We got to our seats, which were fine but the table needed a good wipe. It never got one. The menu looks interesting. The server had no clue what he was talking about. He was either just making things up or guessing. He was nice enough and that is the best I can say about this place. Their chips were so stale that we could not eat them. The green salsa was fine. They have Marlin Pate on their menu. That is not what we wanted or ordered. There was one other marlin dish and it was marlin tacos. And guess what, it is pate. We were told it was imported from Baja Mexico and I don't believe that for a second. It is canned, we knew that, but not chunks as we were led to believe but the same junk they call pate. Their pate is from the cheapest part of the marlin that can not be used as fish fillet. They take all the junk and put it through a machine and there is your pate. We were so clear we did not want pate. We were ignored. It was awful, all of it. We took it home to the dogs as well as the rest of the food and the to go box had so much grease it was leaking. We also order "lightly" battered shrimp and onion rings. Safe right--wrong. It was not lightly battered but had heavy batter as if it had been re-deepfried. The onion rings were the thin pieces of onion, not even close to rings. Now I love those, but these were so bad that were not something anyone could eat. Filled with grease, I mean dripping grease and cooked in dirty oil (it has a taste when the oil is not changed), that they were just left. They don't even have ice tea. Indeed this is the worst food we have ever had in our lives, the place is not clean and there is not one good thing I can say, and I always find something nice to say. I rarely leave a one star review for an eatery, but this is just disgusting.
