This place is legendary! I've been a customer since 2001 when I brought my Corvette in for some electric cutouts. They did a great job. I could flip a switch and go from quiet to very not quiet in 2 seconds. I got a little older and needed a Suburban for a big family. Once again Ed Hanson had my back. He removed the "old man" exhaust resonator and welded on a nice, slant tip, stainless steel exhaust tip. Fast forward many years and slightly downsizing to a 5 passenger truck. They knew exactly what I wanted and removed the fake lame rectangular chrome exhaust tips. Installed a bad ass black powder coated quad tip system. There are always really sweet cars there for exhaust work. I saw a custom low rider, 64 Impala?, and an early 60s Vette there today. Probably over $100k value. I'll star by explaining the stars, I was quoted by the owner of the shop about $500 for and exhaust set up , he was extremely knowledgeable and very easy going to talk to I sent my fiance for an appointment to take it in and give a sound I was looking for, after she arrived he kindly suggested that it's best for me to go as the sound sounds different traveling through the phone. I made another appointment and selected my set up, when I arrived to pay I was presented WITH a MUCH higher price almost $900 , which I did not like. The owner wasnt there at that time. being that it was all done i went with it. They did a great job overall! it was just the misleading price that I did not like. read more

I was having a small exhaust leak issue due to having an aftermarket exhaust with the OEM gaskets. I had purchased the appropriate gaskets for the Cat back exhaust and contacted the shop. I spoke with Hailey throughout scheduling and payment at the end. Very friendly and super easy to work with. I had an appointment scheduled later in the day and happened to be in the area early and they made it work for me. I unfortunately did not get the name of my mechanic but he worked with me and was honest about my OEM gaskets being in really good shape that it would be best to add them to the manifold which he did under the price we agreed to in the beginning. This is your shop! I worked on solving a catalytic code for a week before i found Hailey and Ed Hansen's shop. The service provided over the phone and the job done in the shop are second to none. I was getting quotes any where from $1200-2000 for the work they did at a fraction of the price. If you want honest, empathetic and extremely knowledgeable staff that do great work at a fair price then stop looking, you found them. A 20 year old Toyota with 300k miles getting a catalytic converter replaced was a value proposition exercise. They helped me pass smog and be able to keep the vehicle for hopefully many more years. Just updating my review here, now that I've taken 4 vehicles to Ed Hanson's. After several years and multiple different kinds of vehicles (Mercedes S65, BMW E30 325is, Toyota FJZ80 Landcruiser, Mercedes 300D), these guys (and gal) are the best. It starts out with expertise and experience, and is supported by excellent customer service, communications, and workmanship. All are second to none. Straight-shootin, no BS, and no shady sales. In this day and age, it's not often that you feel like you got a bargain. I feel that way when I get work done here. I doubt it's the cheapest (or the most expensive) place to get exhaust work done, but the value is always spot on. I know that I can trust these guys with anything that I bring to their door. This September 2022 would be thirty years ago I had my custom exhaust installed on my 68 Corvette compete by Ed Hanson at that time he was the only mechanic. I am continuing doing restoration project lifting the body off the frame to replace body mounts. One of prerequisites was to drop the exhaust from mid frame to exhaust tip. Car had to be towed there. The mechanic added removable flange joints. I was having breakfast across the street they called said its done not even a hour. When I bought my Corvette, I was totally underwhelmed by the exhaust note. It was as quiet as a Buick !! I drove the car that way for a year or so, but decided I wanted a little more satisfaction when I pressed down with my right foot on the 'loud pedal'. Ed Hanson came to the rescue ! Actually, he came to a meeting of the Corvette Club, and mentioned his shop, his services, his warranties and his products. I was sold, and made an appointment to visit. After consulting with Ed about my 'silent' Corvette, he had exactly the right product in mind for me. Ed, or rather one of his talented technicians, installed two of those Magnaflow mufflers that Mario Andretti has advertised. OK, now it sounds like an authentic 6.2 Liter American V-8 !! Rumble rumble. The job is rattle-free and leak-free. The quad tailpipes are perfectly aligned, just like from the factory. I've been a happy driver since the installation. When I was 15 years old all I wanted was a classic Ford Mustang. I worked 2 summers at Vons in La Mesa to save up and find my dream car- A 1966 white on blue 289 V8 with Cragar 5 Stars. I switched the crank, modified the cam duration, added a Edelbrock Intake, 4B Carb and bored it out to a 302 with headers. It was truly a BEAST. I had it towed to Ed Hanson's for 3 inch Flowmasters to finish it off and reap the rewards of bagging groceries and chasing stray shopping carts in the east county sun. That was 1997 and I have ALWAYS gone to Ed Hanson's ever since. The man is the president of volumetric efficiency and back-pressure. He knows how to make your car go faster, run smoother and can tell what's wrong with it before you even pull in to the shop; he is truly an automotive genius. If you're into the classic car hobby in Southern California, you're heard about Ed Hanson's Muffler Service. I knew about him but had never had the need for his services, until about 2 weeks ago. A faulty heat riser gave out and caused an irritating little exhaust leak on my 1964 Cutlass. As it normally the case, I decided that since I was going to have to put it in the shop ANYWAY, I might as well upgrade. I decided to ditch the original factory single exhaust with new duals. I know, 'it's only original once" but I now console myself for my lapse in judgement with the huge grin I get every time I step on the gas! But I'm jumping ahead of myself. I first showed up without an appointment, which meant my car wasn't getting in. Who knew you needed an appointment with a muffler shop? Anyway, I did have a nice conversation with Ed and told him my biggest issue is what kind of mufflers to get. Ed simply asked, "Are you more concerned about performance, sound, or economy?" Obviously, if I was more concerned about economy I'd have had them fix the heat riser and left it alone. I will likely never save enough money gaining an extra MPG or two to make up the cost of a new "Ed Hansen" exhaust system! Anyway, I told him I wanted it to sound like the V-8 it was, but not too loud. And if it had a bit more "gitty up" that would be good as well. After some discussion, and a lot of waffling around on my part, it was offered that when the pipes were ready, I should come back and listen to a few different muffler choices. REALLY!! Now that's service! I readily agreed and left the car. Four hours later, I got the call and headed back to the shop. Backing up in the story a bit... when I was dropping off my car, I had noticed a fellow taking incredible care to make sure the muffler and exhaust tip was JUST RIGHT on an early 70's Honda. I watched him climb out of the "pit" look at it. Go back in and make a minute adjustment, climb back out and look at it. Go back in and make another adjustment and so on and so forth. At the time I thought to myself, "Now that guy is an artist. I sure hope he works on my car." And sure enough, when I came back to "try out" the mufflers, it was Joe "the muffler artist" who was my guy. When I told him that I was glad it was him working on my baby, because I saw the care he took with the Honda, he assured me that everyone who works there is as "detailed oriented" as he was. He actually used a different word to describe the care they take with everyones car, but "detail oriented" will work for a family oriented review. Ed had thought that, from our conversation, that I'd be most happy with Dynaflow Hemi's... which were on the car when I arrived. While they certainly were nice, quiet, and "drone free" Joe saw almost immediately that I wasn't too thrilled. He immediately started pulling out a variety of mufflers and we commenced trying them on. And it was not just because I was being a picky customer... I really felt it was because he was truly concerned that I get something I really liked. After a couple of different brands, I asked him what he preferred, and replied he had Magnaflows on his Mustang and that's what he would recommend. I asked if they had the dreaded "drone" and he assured me that "yes, they do, but only on moderate (or heavy) acceleration between 2500 to 3000 RPM." He then assured me that "Steady cruising on the highway will be very comfortable." He then got a set of Magnaflows and slipped them on the pipes. Once we fired up the car, I could hear the drone, especially inside the car... but I really did like the sound, drone or no drone. I tried a few more brands of mufflers, whittling down my choices, dismissing some and they trying different combinations of the contenders back to back. I really think that Joe would have been just fine if I had spent all afternoon listening to different options. But by 10th or 12th set, it was all blending in together. I figured I'd just take Joe's advice and "Go with the 'flows." Then we spent another 30 minutes exploring all the different tailpipe options!!! And yes, I also went with Joe first suggestion. That guy is an artist! Anyway, the next morning I picked up my car and once I started it up, I fell in love with her all over again. As Joe had told me it would, it was a bit quieter because it now had the tailpipes on it, but the tone I had liked so much the day before was certainly still there and even more "mellow." I LOVE the way my car sounds. I LOVE the drone, and the way I can easily avoid, or enhance it, by judicious use of the throttle pedal. And the workmanship is just pure art. It's a pity it's hidden away beneath the car! Thanks to Ed for running a first class operation... and a HUGE THANKS to Joe for his advice, expertise and "attention to detail." Some background first...I bought a 1997 jeep wrangler for my daughter and it wasn't passing smog at the original auto repair place I took it to. After 2 weeks at that place of "go drive it for 100 mile and come back so we can check the computer" then "now take it home and get up early and drive it for 20 miles on the freeway nonstop and bring it back" and then "we don't have time for you today but come back in a few days when we would have time to open it up to dig deeper for the problem" they finally gave me a quote for a new catalytic converter and front and back O2 sensors. My mouth dropped! So of course I decided to do some price shopping before I was going to let them touch this Jeep again. After getting a few more quotes I was at my wit's end but wanted to call ONE more place before I committed. Thank goodness I did! That's when I came across Ed Hanson's Muffler service. My initial conversation over the phone was like a breath of fresh air! ALL they do, all day long, is work on exhaust systems - they know their specialty well. Without even taking my Jeep to them they knew exactly what I needed, had the parts in stock, gave me a fair quote (no price gouging) and made time for me the next day! From front of the office to the back, their customer service and quality of work was stellar across the board. Had my '15 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland V8 Hemi worked on 2 times by Ed Hanson's and each time has been excellent. First time around, I had the big suitcase muffler in the middle changed out with a Magnaflow xpipe which alone made a significant sound difference on my vehicle. Few months passed, I wanted more sound from my exhaust so I went back to Ed Hanson's a second time. Ed Hanson's changed out the 2 rear resonators with Flowmaster Super 40's and (2) 4.5" black tips. Now i'm loving how the 5.7 Hemi purrs at idle and roars when I get on it. For each time Ed Hanson's worked on my vehicle I was in & out about 1.5-2hrs as I scheduled both my appointments early when they first open. So I could imagine they could get busier as the day progresses. Customer service has been great; they know their stuff and will try their best to accommodate & accomplish whatever it is you're looking for. What really won me over was that Ed Hanson's were nice enough to slip-on & test out different mufflers(Flowmaster Super 10, 40 Series, Super 44, Super 40, and a 14" Magnaflow) to hear which one I like the best before welding everything on. The quality of the work is excellent; I told them exactly how I wanted the mufflers & tips positioned and they did it.
