After seeing reels of this restaurant's crab fried rice, I had to give this a try. We arrived in Friday night, the staff was friendly and the decor was nice. Seating is a little small, so any parties of 4 or larger probably require a reservation. The food came out fairly quickly. We ordered the Tteokbokki. The dish was purposely cooked to be crispier than what you would normally expect, it was very delicious. The jjapaguri was flavorful and the meat and seafood was great. The main course of crab fried rice was amazing. Poured over a sizzling pan, the waiter made sure we had time to get our phones ready. The dish stirred and seasoned well and had a nice fresh taste. Our dessert was black bean and vanilla, which was refreshing and a generous quantity. I ordered the Strawberry fields cocktail that contained vodka, yuja honey, strawberry, lemon which was pretty nice and sweet and not bitter at all. It was literally the only thing I enjoyed. My friend and I had a wonderful experience at Gahm last night. We started with cocktails - she got the Strawberry Fields, I got the Yuja old fashioned. We sat at the bar while we waited for a table and chatted with the very helpful and friendly bartender. We shared a bunch of things - Bulgogi buns, chicken karaage, Tteokbokki, Kalbi Mandu, and 3 kinds of Kimchi - Pogi, Cucumber and Stewed Bacon. We also shared a Sizzling Bulgogi with rice and lettuce wraps. Everything with delicious and we can't wait to go again and try more things! Was really excited to try this place after seeing ads and stories on social media, but left feeling very disappointed.. The biggest thing was the service. None of the waiters really attended for us and we felt like we had to get their attention multiple times to get service. We first got the halmoni mandu, and were waiting for all the dishes to come out but even after 30-40 mins they didn't come. So we finally asked a server and they said they were waiting for us to finish it to start the entrees. I wish they had asked if that is what we wanted to do before assuming that, because we were on a time crunch but also wanted everything to come out to get a full picture of all the dishes (hence the one dumpling left in the photo). All the dishes are pricey for what they are worth, especially the taste.. The jjapaguri was the most disappointing as the noodles were more like instant ramen noodles and not what you would expect? They were a bit too soft for our liking; we thought they would be more chewy. The flavors also did not seem to blend well with the rest of the sauce/toppings. The most disappointing dish was the crab fried rice (mind you, at this point it's been about 1.25hrs since I got seated that we got this). The "experience" and presentation is good when it first come out but it lacked flavor. It was really bland and we barely tasted the crab. Once again, it was also hard to get the check because no one was really attending to us. Overall, came with high expectations but left feeling very disappointed. TLDR: I feel like there's a lot of potential and I enjoyed the creativity on many of the dishes. Gahm tastes more like a grown-up Mokbar. Best things I had were definitely the mandu and the garlic crab rice. Sangria was good. I felt like service could have been a bit better. I was excited to try Gahm and we came in for a Friday night. We ordered quickly and grabbed the house sangria which was very tasty. Burger Mandu. Honestly, really tasty although plating looked interesting. There's lettuce, the mandu wrapper is seared crisp, some acid from the tomatoes; the cheese and meat blend - basically an In-N-Out burger in a dumpling skin. Enjoyable. Mushroom Pancake. This felt off to me, it didn't seem very Korean other than maybe the pancake dipping sauce. Basically a mushroom banh xeo. Fine but felt a bit out-of-place for me. Jaeyuk Scotch Egg. I love the creativity of this dish. The egg was cooked well, the sausage mix was tender, the breading was crispy. I think the jeyuk flavor got a bit lost because there's a good amount of chorizo in the mix but I think if the flavors were tweaked slightly - perfect. Army Stew. Basically an army stew with thicker cut pork belly, lots of bacon and fresh ramen noodle. Unfortunately we had to let it sit a bit because we didn't get any spoons or bowls and it took awhile to flag someone down for them. Dungeness Crab Fried Rice. The flavors itself were very tasty but here's the issue. It comes on a sizzling plate, there's a lot of garlic; it's a dish that needs to be served right away. When ours was arriving, another server was taking the adjacent table's order. The server bringing our dish I guess didn't want to ask them to move so while we waited for the other table to order - the garlic basically was burning on the sizzling plate. I understand that can get awkward but I think it's a judgment call you have to make. So while the other table finished their order, our entree (coincidentally the most expensive on the menu) had a key component effectively spoiled. The minced garlic was noticeably burnt when we ate through it. It was tasty enough but the bitter burnt garlic kinda sucked and to be honest - this was the main reason why I wanted to visit Gahm. Never liked Mokbar, but Gahm...Gahm is upscale Korean done right. - You've got your soupy, savory Halmoni Mandu for those cold, windy nights. - You've got the delicately thin and crispy Wild Mushroom Pajeon wish just a dash of truffle for when you've got the munchies. - You've got the Instagrammable Sizzling Crab Fried Rice, with all its shell-encased eggy glory, for the gluten-inclined (and those who caught Esther Choi on Iron Chef Legend). - You've got the hearty Smoked Army Stew, complete with unlimited broth refills, to satisfy your hot pot cravings. - And, for those who watched Iron Chef Legend and are smart enough to order OFF-menu, you've got your Spot Prawn Crudo with Gochujang Granita for flavorful raw shrimp and crab. The space is relatively small, but the environment and staff are warm and inviting - good for a date, or a small group prior to a night out. Solid apps and small plates - the halmoni mandu in broth was comforting, and the spot prawn special with crab and gochujang granita is a cute if quirky concept. The crab fried rice is a standout here, with tomalley from a crabshell poured and mixed in onto a hot stone plate tableside, resulting in a delightful mix of crispy nurungji and custardy crab. The budae jjigae is also reasonably tasty, but nothing special, and a bit of a small portion of what is an archetypal comfort-food stew for $26. No need to travel from elsewhere in NYC given the proliferation of similar concepts in so many spots, but a certainly great new option in the neighborhood! read more

Solid fans of Esther Choi and we were really excited to make reservations and check this place out after walking through Brooklyn one day. Fast forward to that day: We weren't starving so we only ordered 3 dishes and one cocktail. All plates except the mains were definitely tapas sized and the total was a bit pricey. Now, let's get into the food and why it was a 2/5. Brussel sprouts were nothing special-- advertised as crispy but they were very soggy and lacked any sort of crunch. The tteokbokki was this in between of soggy and crispy, it seemed a bit bipolar, unsure of what state it wanted to be in. The egg and other toppings were nice and mixed in well! Lastly, the jjapaguri was decent but nothing out of the ordinary. All in all, for the price I definitely expected the quality of the food to be a bit higher. Also, the cocktail never arrived until we finished 2/3 dishes. It seemed like the restaurant was short staffed and struggling to keep up with everything. Nonetheless, all the staff members were extremely nice and great servers! The place was just definitely understaffed. Lastly, the diners next to us ordered a dish that needed to be cooked at the table. The portable cookware that the server brought over went out on two separate devices and the second time there was a super large bang and then a decent smell of gas that leaked from the can afterwards. Good Korean place with different flavor combinations. We ordered a bunch of food to share. Starting with the apps we got the boneless chicken and bone in fried wings. Both had different sauces, we found that we like the sauce to the boneless chicken but the crunch on the fried wings. We also had the scotch egg with the miso sauce. The brussel sprouts and beef buns (note only one bun in each order) are an absolute must! For mains, we found the short rib to be a bit tough and chewy. Now if you know brooklyn you would know they there isn't much Korean options here, you would usually have to go to ktown or flushing for decent korean food. My son and I had an absolutely amazing dinner at Gahm by Mokbar in Brooklyn before a concert at Bklyn Paramount. We started with a Dirty Korean cocktail for me (I think it had spruce soju and kimchi juice in it) and a strawberry tea for him, then shared a mouthwatering bowl of halmoni mandu in broth. Still thinking about the explosion of flavors in that dish. 10/10. Bulgogi buns were also great. I'm not sure what happened during my trip to NYC because I didn't make a reservation to any places, this being one of them. We got there around 6ish? And luckily it wasn't crazy busy for the walk in tables cause the place is small. We were seated almost immediately and then everyone else was talk there was a wait after us, so thank god. Anyways, I only knew I wanted to try the crab fried rice after seeing how popular that dish was on Instagram. We started off with the crispy Brussels spouts. It was okay, typical crispy brussel sprouts. I like the sweet touch of sauce to balance from some of the more charred pieces. We also had the gojuchang wings. If you're a saucy person, this is your jam! The wings were coated in so much sauce. I'm not complaining, it was great. The sauce was spiccyyy after awhile. But it was sweet, tangy, savory all in one bite. We ordered the trio of the pickled veggies. It was white kimchi, kimchi cucumbers, and Korean pear kimchi. The wings also came with a pickle radish thing. But the Korea pear kimchi took me by surprise. I wasn't sure how it would work, but it soaked in the kimchi flavor, while still retaining its sweetness. So you get this funky and spicy flavors from the kimchi and it cools down with the sweetness of itself. AMAZING. The crab fried rice came with all the bells and whistles for the gram. It came out on a hot stone and they pour a mixture of crab and eggs on the hot bowl and mix it around, essentially cooking the eggs. It's flavorful and has a lot of crabs, the hot stone makes some of the rice pieces crispy so that's nice. We also ordered the special for the day, which was the short rib ramen. We were highly disappointed. The broth felt a little bland for it being cooked for 10+ hours. It had a few pieces of radish and that was about it. The noodles had a bounce to it. I wouldn't get this again if I see it on the menu. The service was amazing. All of wait staff were so friendly and attentive. They explained everything so well. I came in with extremely high expectations because my fiance and I have been such a big fan of Esther Choi. When we heard that she was opening a new restaurant during our visit to NYC we were so excited. I hope that this will serve as only constructive criticism! First off, it's pricey.. about $165 for 3 people with 3 cocktails (maybe I'm just uncultured because I'm from Cali, but would not categorize this as a cheap place). The portions are pretty small, about tapas portions, we ordered about 4-5 dishes and were ok filled. The first dish we had was the tartare. The chips were extremely oily. We expected more technique and care, but our mouths just felt like it was coated in oil from the rice cracker. The mushroom pancake was also extremely oily, but the pancake alone didn't taste good without the sauce that they served. The sauce on the mok wings were overwhelming and didn't taste very balanced. It was like a sweet soy sauce glaze and may have been slightly overcooked because there was a slight bitterness to it. Out of all the dishes I think the crab fried rice was my favorite, but even then didn't think there was anything special to it. The rice may have been sorta burnt too since there was a slight bitterness. I also remember the rice being a bit salty. My favorite thing here may have been the cocktails. The strawberry fields was delicious. Service was also great. They were attentive and the food came quickly. Mok Wings (half & half) $14 - We've had better, seriously Tteokbokki $14 - Just okay... Pogi Kimchi $5 - I get it. Everything is costly to make, but we have NEVER paid for kimchi in any Korean restaurants before. What a turn off. Sizzling Crab Fried Rice $36 - So so, did not taste any crab in the fried rice. TL;DR it's OK. There were some ups and downs. Get the brussels sprouts and miss the wings. Service is good but value is meh. We watched Esther Choi's Iron Chef episode to hype ourselves before going. It was fairly empty and we were able to walk in on a weekday night with no issue. Darker ambiance that's fairly quiet. Great for a date night or to catch up with someone. Food- Exceptional: Crispy brussels sprouts -- do yourself a favor and get this even if you don't like brussels sprouts. The texture is absolutely on point and the scallion cream / sweet soy glaze is a combination that is so delightful. I'd buy it as a sauce to put on everything if I could. Good: Assorted kimchi -- we had the seasonal, which was a korean pear. Really good but it might not be there the next time. The other two off the menu (cucumber kimchi and stewed bacon) were fairly normal and just OK. Tteokbokki -- little bombs of flavor. Crispy bacon is a really nice touch to this dish. Didn't really vibe with the sauce but I still enjoyed it. Jjapaguri -- we were full by the time this came Pass: Mok wings -- odd version of korean fried chicken. Tried this with both sauces. Breading was thick and the sauces were heavy and had a darker undertone to them that wasn't my favorite. Portions were generous and we brought most of the jjapaguri home to eat the next day which was delicious. Staff was attentive. but we were only one of two tables. Pricing is OK given the upscale nature, but it's a little more than I'd probably value it at. AMAZING EXPERIENCE. We came for a birthday reservation towards the end of the night. The server was super friendly and the right amount of attentive. We ordered the halmoni mandu, mushroom pajeon, kimchi, crab fried rice, and pork belly kimchi dish. All the food was great but the standouts were the CRAB FRIED RICE and ASIAN PEAR KIMCHI (seasonal). The rice had soooo much crab flavor and the pear kimchi was so refreshing! The chef came out with traditional seaweed soup served for birthdays (delicious!) and explained some of the dishes to us too. Great restaurant with amazing service. Came an hour late because of Brooklyn traffic and they still held our table. The waiters were very sweet and brought us our food within 10-15 minutes. Walking in I was excited to try Esther Choi's new restaurant since I saw her on Ironchef Legend, but I came out quite disappointed. Everything was overwhelmingly bland. Was it edible, yes. Will I come back or try Choi's other restaurants, probably not. - Saewoo Mandu Ordered for the whole shrimp but got a mouthful of bacon taste instead. Overall it was fine. - Hamachi Tartare The hamachi and avocado was fresh and light, but I think thats the bare minimum. Its very bland, rice cracker didn't add anything to it. The ratio between tartare and cracker was disproportional and it was very hard scooping the hamachi onto the cracker. - Chicken Karaage Plating was very ugly. It's like chicken with a flop of white sauce. Chicken was good but it's more yangnyeom than karaage. - Salmon Jang Probably the best dish, but it was still a mid and bland dish. Even though the salmon was soy cured you couldn't taste any soy sauce. Not even a hint of saltiness. But salmon was fresh, soft and fatty (which is still the bare minimum). - Jjapaguri Quite excited for this dish because jjapaguri is a dish you can't really mess up. But once again, BLAND. Does this restaurant have salt? When they said brown butter steak, they really meant it cause no salt was added. Actually I take it back, couldn't taste butter either. Jjapaguri was very bland. I mean if they used Chapaghetti packaged ramen, it probably would've been more flavorful. The seafood in here was the highlight of the dish. - Service 10/10. Everyone was so nice and warm. This is the only thing they got going here. - Ambience Warm, cozy. Interior aesthetic was pretty. There was some traditional Korean pots on display. Although I didn't really get what was the connection between the restaurant and persimmon (gahm). We didn't get the food we ordered and when we mentioned it, the service staff talked to us like a drill sergeant. Still cannot believe what I heard. Won't go back or any other Esther Choi's restaurants. Food was meh! And overpriced. The only thing that was memorable about the place was how little they cared. read more

drinks -- bad overpriced cocktails r normal they r not a bar so it wld be awful to critique on that 3/5 Cheesy Corn -- if you have never tasted cheesy corn in your life then maybe you wld like this! but for those of us that are cheesy corn enthusiast, you'll find this dish. Extremely disappointing. cheesy corn is supposed to be fun not some gourmet dish supposed to be sweet, not savory. This was very disappointing to taste. 1st Mandu -- honestly the mandu was great!!. it was kind of like a deconstructed soup dumpling, which I found very easy to eat, and it was also very tasty since the filling complemented the broth. crab fried rice -- wow just wow this dish was a stunner. They bring out the crab shell and mix it in front of you. Every bite in this dish is heaven. This is made by someone who knows fried rice like the back of their hand, and it shows. delicious. Hamachi Tartare -- what at first glance was a simple apletizer ended up becoming a surprise favorite! it was a delicious sensory experience, not only due to the excellent blending of the Hamachi and the avocado but the bring up the most delicious, cloudy chips, that just melt in your mouth. While the space itself is a little small, it is no wonder it is packed night in and night out. Server was super friendly and helped us pick out amazing dishes to try. Love the unique spins on dishes they have and will certainly go back to try more of the menu. read more

Check your credit card statement to make sure they charge the correct amount. Gahm entered the tip incorrectly. They overcharged my credit card. I had to go back to Gahm to get a refund. read more

Fantastic Korean fusion food! Tapas style sharing is my favorite way to enjoy a bunch of different plates and flavors and all the dishes hit at Gahm! The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food too. Will definitely be added into the neighborhood rotation! Service was also attentive and kind. read more
