I'm not typically a crab cake person since I love me steamed crabs, but I ate here yesterday for a birthday celebration. Based on the broiled crab cakes, this place would be closer to a 4. You get broiled, huge lumps of tasty crab. ONE of those bad boys is enough for most people, though there's a 2 cake option. If you get the fried ones, you don't get lump. You get filler and a crunchy outer coating. Is it bad? No. It's just not nearly as good as the broiled ones. You'll need the tarter sauce to make it tasty and I'm just not into doing that to crab. The downfall for me is the sides. The salad bar is not up to par - iceberg, chopped beets that were not as vibrant as they should be, etc. That's what I get for trying to keep it healthy, I guess. I also ordered the green beans. Again, meh. Good news - the service is friendly and as prompt as possible. The prices are reasonable too. Let me just say, "Don't judge a book by its cover". My friend took me here on a Friday night and I was a bit skeptical when we first arrived. The location of the restaurant was certainly not in a "hot spot", so naturally I didn't have high expectations walking in. The venue: fairly small, family style restaurant with limited seating but luckily we got seated right away and greeted by our lovely server. She was very polite and energetic which instantly sharpened my mood. For entree, I ordered the stuffed rock fish with crab imperial and the crab imperial was made with all crab meat with barely any filler...and my friend order the fried seafood platter. I was amazed with how big the portion size was, and the food was delicious!!! My only complaint would have to be the wait time for the food and the fact that they didn't have "Rice" as a side dish to pair with my stuffed fish, but definitely... WORTH THE WAIT!! SCORE!!! What is NOT to love about this place? So, it was fairly easy to find, and I went there on a nasty rainy day. The sign is big enough to see from the road. Parking is fair at best. It was a house at first, so it is quaint. There really isn't a hostess per se, so you kinda have to look for the person at the register. From my understanding, you need a complete party in order to be seated. Okay so I got the broiled crab cake, which comes with two sides, I got the salad bar and the twice baked potato. The salad bar was small but fresh, there was pasta salad, potato salad in addition to the other regular salad items. My crab cake was as big as my father's fist! Ah say what!!!! Needless to say, I couldn't finish it. There was no filler, and the pieces of crab had me thinking that I was snacking on some chicken! Yes they were that big! My twice baked potato wasn't my fave, but meh, can't have everything. I tasted my OMs (other mother) string beans and they were good too. She had the shrimp platter, which was awesome as well. They were cooked nicely and the shrimp weren't the size of bait. My brother had the fresh cut french fries (yes I tried those too) and they were cooked great too. Hey I have to do a thorough review, right??!!! I also found out that they will create meals for you, I had the greatest idea to have a crab cake AND wait for it.....shrimp! Wow! This place is great! For 30 years I have traveled out of the mid west across the country negotiating multi-million dollar process equipment projects, and have eaten in several great places - Seal Beach, CA; Monterey, CA; Kansas City, MO; Tampa,FL; and Boston, MA each hold a special resturant. Now, Annapolis (Edgewater) has added one to my top ten USA restaurants! Scoring 5's in all categories, we could not find a flaw. Taste, seasoning, preparation, Service, efficiency, attentiveness, Cleanliness, wait time...everything has been spot on. For food as good as this, and friendly service attentive but not over bearing, I would have expected to pay twice the price! Thank you for a wonderful experience. We will be back. read more

Well, I really do not understand the high ratings and rankings Edgewater receives, maybe its the strong drinks I have read about here or the oldtime feel of the dark atmoshere or heavily wooded bar, bathroom and walls. Either way, longtime Pax River guy who moved to TX but come back at least once a year and enjoy the South and Severn river establishments--Mike's and Cantlers. As for Edgewater....visited there on Veterans Day 2023 weekend as I was up for the Navy football weekend. Game was great--one of the few W's--and so we decided to grab the #1 rated crabcake in the area. My sister lives in Riva (since the 80's) and has tried many crab cakes over the years. So we ventured over to try out Edgewater and were promptly ...uh err...greeted by a somewhat unconcerned and just doing my job server...maybe 60 years old woman who has "been here forever". Not inviting but we couldn't wait to order the crab cake special and as we waited we visited the overworked salad bar and were willing to overlook that as it was Sunday post lunch around 2:00. Just not a big fan of salad bars that are not cleaned up and refilled once empty. But come on crab cakes..can't wait! Well what a disappointment. We ordered the backfin crab cake which was mushy, bland and not cripsy on either side. Thought I could manage eating it if I placed it between a few saltines...nope not here; for some reason no saltines in the house, always thought that was a staple if you served any type of chowder or soup. But they had some nasty butter cracker to enjoy, not. We inquired w our server about the crabcake and were told, "oh, you ordered the backfin crabcake, you should have ordered the jumbo lump crab cake". So I should have spent $40 instead of $30...and btw if that was the case why didn't she refer us in that direction to start with when all 3 of us ordered the "regular crab cake". OMG--trashy salad bar, poor service, bland mushy crab cakes only outdone by the non crispy limp french fries. When I lived in N Orleans I was on a mission to find the best gumbo in the Crescent City Since I've lived in NoVa, I've been on a mission to find the best Crab Cakes. This place comes close. Went with a friend for Sunday lunch. They were very busy but not packed. My crab mate and I split theTtrio which had Sea Bass, Lump Crab Cake & deep fried blue crab. We added bake potato and the salad bar. It was good but not ...WOW...good. So far I'm reserving that for Phillips Seafood & Fadley's...so far. I can't add much more that what you've read from my fellow Yelpsters but to say the service was routine. I don't think I've ever used that term to describe table service but our waitress would swing by every little but and ask how everything was...she never made eye contact....so how would she know what our experience was like? As I observed the staff, they all seemed to fit the same profile. Frumpy, huffy with a tude. After we paid the bill my friend went potty and as I'm waiting I wandered into one of the side dining rooms that seemed like it was reserved for private parties. I have heard good things about this restaurant in the past so I decided to take my wife there that's Saturday night for dinner. I like speaking the truth and want to be courteous and help, so here we go. When we walked in we were greeted kindly by the bartender. The staff was nice and friendly with good service. The salad bar was the best part of the evening. The downside was that the place is shabby at best. The carpet in the dining room was dirty and nasty smelling. The tables were sticky and grimy. Shame on the owners for letting this place go. It should have been renovated 15 years ago. Turn it around and shut down for a month and renovate. Ordered crab cakes. Food takes a loooong time to come out. I've eaten bread and every cracker in this basket to keep from starving. I'll add more when and if my food ever comes out. Food finally came out. The crab cake is fantastic. Our has lump crab meat the size of unshelled pecans in it...very little filler. The fried okra is good but needed salt for me to be able to call it good. The stuffed potato is a HUGE disappointment. I'm not from the region. To me, a stuffed potato isn't mashed potatoes baked in a potato skin. That's what this was. No flavor! Where I'm from, a stuffed potato is loaded...bacon, cheddar, green onion, cajun spice, sour cream, butter...mixed in the potato, THEN stuffed back into the potato skin, topped with cheese and baked. I'm going to do my best to describe the restaurant without beating it up and merely stating my observations and beliefs. Not even sure where to start. When the best part of a restaurant is their mediocre salad bar you know you're in trouble. The decor hasn't been touched in probably 40 years. Maybe that adds to the charm in the "regular's" eyes, in my eyes, it's just old. Food was beyond bland. I opted for the twice baked baked potato. The description the waitress gave was incredible. What I got was so bland, that salt and pepper couldn't even dress it up enough to make it taste worth eating. Steak was so-so. Not an expensive cut, kind of tough and lacked seasoning. We were seating in a booth that sat a few feet from the bar. There were plenty of other seats available, not sure if that waitress was just next in cue or what. We certainly didn't ask to be seated there and given five minutes of sitting there we wished we had asked to move. The locals at the bar were loud. Not just loud, but an obnoxious type of drunk loud. So loud WE had to talk loudly just to hear one another from across a small table. Overall, doubtful return. read more

We had a great COVID-aware experience outside in November for lunch. Ordering and paying by phone was easy. Food was great.

I must say it is hands down the best lump crabmeat crabcake ever made. No filler or anything else. Just lump crab meat and big. And I mean big, so big that even I was stuffed. Who the heck can eat two of these but I guess you can take one home and make a mean crab omelette or a combo plate crabcake sandwhich. I would have given 4 stars but the salad bar which is included just isn't up to par. Seems like day old wilted lettuce, etc... Let's also get some good dinner rolls not just ones from Safeway or Giant food store. The bread should live up to the crabcake. Bon Appetiteeee read more

Two things: Crabcakes and Cream of Crab Soup! Both are delicious. I would also recommend the salad bar and their French fries as your sides if you get the jumbo lump crabcake platter. I'm not for sure, but I think the salad dressings are made in house. I don't know but that ranch dressing is extra delicious to me. I've always wanted to ask them if they make their own salad dressings or not. Maybe I will ask the next time I go. Their fries remind me of the fries you would get on the boardwalk in Ocean City....soooo good! You will not regret it. I promise. So I went to this restaurant for my birthday, based on everyone's glowing recommendations. I tried the trio special--lump crab cake, broiled rockfish and fried oysters. I got the browned potato side. My husband got the fried chicken. Here's my assessment: Crab cake--definitely had filler, and definitely not the best I've ever had. Bland. Would not get it again Rockfish--good, but again, bland Oysters--good Potato--the weirdest thing I've ever eaten! A whole potato--boiled, and then deep fried--a whole potato! This place was recommended by some friends of ours and it did not disappoint. So much fresh seafood at an incredible price. This small, quaint family owned restaurant is so friendly! We came the weekend of the 4th of July. They apparently close for 2weeks in July and January. I ordered the Seafood Platter which consisted of stuffed shrimp, shrimp, huge scallops, clams and backfin crab balls. You can choose broiled or fried and my husband had chicken. I also tried their cream of crab soup which was filling and amazing. I had a side of green beans and a double baked potato. I simply could not eat all of this fresh goodness. My entire plate was overtaken by seafood. Our server who was wonderfully attentive told us the owner cooks all of the food. In fact, he has been there himself for 19years which says a lot for an establishment. Thank you for such outstanding customer service and conversation. This place is a little homey restaurant sitting on the side of the road in Edgewater. We were promptly greeted and seated when we entered and the service was on point. No problems, no complaints there. I was in the mood for a crab cake and based on the high rating decided to give this place a try. It was just ok. Both the Cream of Crab Soup and the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake were loaded with big, meaty pieces of crab, but I wasn't a fan. I'm not sure if it was imported or not, but it had a very weird texture and I know it definitely wasn't Maryland Blues. The Cream of Crab Soup itself was very very tasty; I just didn't like the crab meat. I ordered the two crab cake meal since I planned to have one for lunch the next day. I gave it away since I knew I was never going to eat it; it just wasn't good! A lot of nasty crab meat does not make a good crab cake. I also had the Stewed Tomatoes (eehhh!) and the twice-baked potato which had no flavor and no seasoning. I don't eat Mussels but my friend said they were excellent. I will probably give them a second try and get the Maryland Back Fin Crab Cake and see how that tastes, but I have no reason to get that Jumbo Lump again. read more

If you want RUDE service- this is the restaurant for you. I'm a well educated person and eat out all of the time. I live here in the area and was treated like dogs*it as soon as I walked in. My significant other called to see if there was a wait as we sat in the parking lot right outside. The response was "there is no wait". 30 seconds later- we walked in. We were about to be seated and all of a sudden--we were told that there was a 30-35 minute wait for a table. A heavy-set waitress asked me if I was on the seating list. I told her that we just called and was told that there was no wait. Her response was rude and unacceptable. She stated in a disrespectful tone "there was no wait when you called". I find it hard to believe that there can be a 30-35 minute wait for a table 30 seconds after we called and it was confirmed that there was no wait. I have been here before and the food is good-- but the service and how they treated me and my significant other was so poor- that we have no intention of going back. All I had ever heard were RAVE reviews of this place - especially the Crab Cakes. I am allergic to seafood - which is evidently their signature dishes, but figured they had other items that would be equally good. I ended up with fried chicken. It was just okay. Seemed their fryer could have used an oil change. I was a little taken aback by the price which was kinda steep for just fair fried chicken that tasted like it was cooked in old oil. The atmosphere was nothing special either. It is small, and unappealing. If the seafood is as good as I hear it would probably be worth it, but if that is not what you are looking for, go elsewhere because they don't have much else to offer . read more

I knew Edgewater used some imported crab meat, but I had no idea until I read in the local paper today that they use only Indonesian crab for their lump cakes. Frankly, I think this is very sad, for so many reasons. Locals can usually tell the difference between the dryness and lack of flavor from the asian crab and the sweet, tender meat of our local blues. Visitors on the other hand are none the wiser when they flock here after reading all the excellent reviews. . To make matters worse, the meat coming from Indonesia is from a different type of crab. Boo hoo. Imported crab like this is so much cheaper than our local stuff, but Edgewater Restaurant still sells their cakes at an unbelievably high price - that's just not right. Hey I realize all the year round crab houses in our area have to resort to importing crabs at some point, since the local season here is short but do you have to go international? I made a reservation 1 week in advance for Mother's Day. We arrive on time and we were told that our table would be ready shortly. We'll after about 20 minutes of standing in the middle of this tiny restaurant near dining customers and along with other parties with reservations, my mother who was suffering from a back injury and could not stand any longer and confused as hell as to why we were left WITH RESERVATIONS standing around by passing employees. I reasonably asked about our table around 4 times within 20 minutes. I have no idea why this place did this. I have no idea why Edgewater Restaurant takes a reservation from us but there was no sense of urgency to even honor it in a timely fashion. I have no idea why I even made my party wait 20+ minutes. :( IT WAS FRIGGIN MOTHER'S DAY!... How embarrassing for me that something I organized and was so simple to accomplish did not go according to plan for some ungodly reason. I swear on everything I called them 1 week before and confirmed then reconfirmed the day before that they could and would be able to accommodate my guests and I. They told me 'absolutely'.... WAS THIS A LIE? Utterly, this place expressed no sense of urgency to find a resolution. YOU KNEW WE WERE COMING. After the 20 minute mark, I could not stand the no customer service we received and my Mother says to me, "maybe we should go, they seem busy"...... but I'm like Mom, I MADE RESERVATIONS I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THIS IS HAPPENING.They should've been busy with us! Clearly, Mom wanted to leave. We all did. We felt so completely hungry and humiliated. So I simply and politely told the "hostess" that we'll be leaving. She simply says, "Okay".... Again, no sweat off her brow. Now, where the heck do I take my family so last minute for a Mother's Day brunch since Edgewater Restaurant did this to me? I took my family to Fuji Japanese Steakhouse...... with no reservation.... they sat us immediately..... and the service was EXCELLENT!!!!.... (I'll do a Yelp review on them shortly). I guess the day had no where to go but up after leaving this place. I had about 10 people so clearly we needed to drop a few hundred sparing no expense for my Mom on Mothers Day. Where do I start? Food, customer service, or decor? Edgewater Restaurant came highly recommended for its crab cakes so my husband and I ventured out today to check it out. First thing that struck me was the decor . . . straight out of the 70's. It is dark and very much outdated. My husband asked if I wanted to leave but I decided to take a chance -- perhaps it was a diamond in the rough. Not! Next, I noticed the loud, obnoxious waitress who called everyone sweetie but only showed great customer service to a select group of customers who appeared to be regulars. I also noticed the waitresses wearing shorts that were too short and not figure flattering. A real turn off! My husband and I placed our orders -- fried Roughy with twice baked potato and the salad bar for him and lump crab cake with fried okra and salad bar for me. The salad bar was disappointing at best. The bowl of iceberg lettuce was filled with old lettuce. YUCK! Then there was the loooooooong wait for our entrées. OMG! While we waited, a family came in and ordered a large order to go -- $90+ tab. They mentioned to the waitress that they were celebrating the birthday of the older woman in the group. She walked with a cane. They waited for over 30 minutes for their order. The waitress told them the 30-min wait was normal for takeout orders. The older lady, who walked with a cane, asked if she could have something to drink. The loud, obnoxious waitress told her that would be $2.50 plus tax and walked away. After waiting 5 more minutes, the lady asked the younger, obnoxious waitress if she could have something to drink and she rudely gave her a glass of water just as her takeout order was finally coming out. No one apologized for the wait. No one offered a free beverage in consideration of her long wait, big tab, and the fact that it was her birthday. Really?!? The icing on the cake was listening to the older obnoxious waitress talk about the older lady after she left. Apparently, the waitress is a Ravens fan and took issue with the customer wearing a Portis/Redskins jersey. Whoa! Then, the lady who was sitting at the bar, clearly a regular, complained about the wait for her takeout order. The loud, obnoxious waitress offered her a free beverage. The lady at the bar was not there longer than the family of three. So, why the preferential treatment? (Note: The family of 3 were Black and the regular customers where White.) As, you can guess from reading my review, I have nothing positive to say about the customer service. Not once during our meal did the waitress come by to check on our meal. Not once! She didn't even notice that I never received a beverage! I reserved my comments about the food for last because the entire experience eclipsed the food. The crab cake was amazing. Absolutely amazing. My husband enjoyed his meal as well but it was nothing special. After all is said and done, we would never step foot in Edgewater Restaurant again. This will be a very succinct review of this legendary establishment. As I understand the purpose of the Yelp community, we are all trying to assist fellow Yelpers in the selection of our dining choices. Any favorable review for this eatery is unfathomable. Many reviewers note that the lump meat crab cake is the only entree to order here, as everything else is mediocre. They are partially right--but the crab cake is even worse than the other dishes we sampled here. I can only describe this touted crab cake as a colossal assembly of imported crab meat held together with a watery mayonnaise based adhesive. The only reason I took a second bite of this seafood horror was to hopefully establish that I had experienced a sensory aberration with bite number one. Unfortunately, my nervous system was properly operating and sending me a message to vacate this restaurant with all due haste. In closing, do yourself a favor. Skip this allegedly perfect crab cake. You would be better off with a Filet of Fish sandwich. For that matter, Mrs. Paul probably has a better crab cake. read more

The food is not bad, but if you care about value, this is the wrong place. I question returning, just walking back to my table, I could see into the kitchen where young services are sitting on the preparation table and the dish washer. Disappointed: I'm not sure what everyone enjoys so much. Wet crab cake, iceburg lettuce salad bar, mushy fried clams, weird fried potato (and I mean half a baked potato, peeled and dropped in a fryer) that I didnt know what to do with, cream of crab soup filled with butter. This place is a little gem located near Annapolis, Md. Upon arrival it looks similar to a house. The parking lot is small and when you walk in it is normally very crowded and feels cramped but it is for a good reason. This is because the food is fantastic. The crab cakes are huge, no fillers and so good. You will not leave hungry and will probably leave with a doggy bag. I can't find too many places that sells fresh fried flounder, but this place does and I love it. We don't come here often but when we do it's always fantastic. The other part is they serve a sweet potatoe bread pudding made by Keiths Eats and Treats and I'm such a fan of his that it makes this place even better. read more

This is my favorite crab cake and cream of crab soup place ever! The inside could use some updating but the staff is always so great! You need to get here and you need to get here now! If it's around Christmas time the cranberry vodka mule is AMAZING! read more

For a mom and pop like atmosphere restaurant, this is it. Not sure what was going on the day of my first visit but, how hard is it to get Coke right? Mine was flat. The water was a safe change. The menu is filled with great selections. Not sure why the combos aren't posted. Luckily I was with a group that frequented the spot and new we could mix the dishes. So, I got the fried shrimp and lump crab cake. Oh my goodness. Not often do I get a lunch I can not finish. The food was just delightful. And the salad bar was very fresh. So, for a great Chesapeake crab cake, you will not be disappointed with the lump crab cake. About the size of a mans fist and zero breading. I'll be back. Ordered here for takeout crabcakes along with fries and coleslaw and green beans I have been hearing RAVES about this place for years and we finally dove in today I agree the size of the crabcake is generous and there is just enough filler to hold it together, but that's where the awesomeness stopped in my opinion. There was not enough flavor and dare I say it seemed kind of....dry? I hate "wet" sloppy crabcakes, but this one was just way too dry. Perhaps we caught them on an off day? The sides were delicious however, the the young man who took our order on the phone was very patient and polite - hard to find that these days. read more
