It's been a while for me since being at the Edgewater Restaurant, but it shined for my return trip. You have to know what their strengths are and work around it. My wife got the crab cakes and loved it. They don't do all that much for me and I rarely order them. They had broiled or baked rockfish as a special and I asked if they could deep fry it - waitress said she needed to check with the kitchen. The answer was yes, and they sure know how to bread and fry rockfish. I got a very large piece of perfectly crusted (not battered) very fresh rockfish. I'm one of those people who really like their throwback salad bar. So for me, the salad bar, rolls and fantastic fried rockfish was a memorable meal. If i could give this place 0 stars i would. Me and my boyfriend went there last wednesday night, waitresses didn't do anything but take our order and made side staff do everything they should have been doing. Place is dirty, old and stinks. My Crab Cake had hair and dead nats cooked inside of them, french fries were not cooked at all, and the twice baked potato was cold. The waitress talked about her sexual life with her friends at one of the booths distributing our appetite, she was rude and carried herself in a disgusting manner, bartender was also very rude to the people sitting at the bar and still expected tips from them. F-Bomb, Trash-Mouth Food: On work travel, desided to drive an hour out of my way for some local seafood home-cooking during a Friday evening when the restaurant was packed with patrons in their 30s-70s. While initially having a nice wait at the small quaint bar as they cooked my order, one of the younger waitresses (mid-20s to 30s) decided it was appropriate and acceptable to describe some event in her life at the tops of her lungs with F*** this & F*** that; etc. She was speaking to another waitress in her 50s, so apparently this sort of low-class, peasant, rude disgusting behavior in front of the all the customers is permitted by the Ownership. Had dinner with family that I had not seen in a while. Was planning a special night. Staff seemed put out because we arrived late. Food for everyone was barely edible, seafood was not fresh, crab cakes were mushy, fried foods were not crispy. The wait staff was okay except the servers all bunch together and talk extremely loud, so loud we could not hear each other. The restaurant seemed dirty. If I had to base this review on purely food then it would be 5 stars. However, there are tons of other factors involved. Let's start with the food. I ordered the crab cakes and fried shrimp with a side of double cooked potato and a trip to the salad bar. The crab cakes were quite amazing; large chunks of meat with out any filler. The shrimp was solid too, not much breading and actual shrimp. The salad bar was a bit small but you can get what you need from it. The potato was average as the double cooked wasn't so special. The service was great, very nice and attentive to us and provided us everything we needed. The ambiance is what they can probably work on. It's a bit of a hole in the wall. A house transformed into a restaurant. They can use a major face lift. Besides that, I'd still recommend it for the food though, esp the crab cakes!! read more

So I'll give this place two stars simply because the crab cake is ok and the staff is friendly. Other than that.... ‍ I hate to be so negative and I've come back I think 4 times just to see if my opinion would change and needless to say, it hasn't. The crab cake... it's decent. When you google the best crab cakes in MD; this place is usually on the list. I've had the crab cake several times and it's just ok. I've honestly had better but I've also had way worse. I've had the fried seafood platter and tasted the broiled as well and it's decent. Nothing special. Now to the sides... the absolute WORST selection of sides ever IMO. You'd expect a baked potato, broccoli, apple sauce and maybe a few other common seafood restaurant sides but they have none of that. They do have fries but my old school lunch fries were better. They have some type of "stuffed" baked potato but it's hard and bland. All of their sides are tasteless and the salad bar sucks as well. Even the lemonade lacks flavor. So needless to say; I will not be returning. I tried to like this place even if it was just for the crab cakes but I can't come back. We brought friends here for dinner. They loved stepping back in time & the feel of a neighborhood pub. The wait staff were attentive & very friendly. Love the salad bar, you can make a very nice salad with the offerings. We had the jumbo lump ( great description) crab cake. It was delicious. Friends had the 1/2 fried chicken. Said it was moist and very good. Someone else had the Maryland back fin crab cakes. You get two cakes. They were tasty but did have some filler but for the price a good deal. Ok, ok, OhKay! 2 5star review in with in 3 months? I am not off my meds, I assure you. I have just experience culinary perfection. I know when some have said this it was just theatrics and dramatic flair. However there have been very few meals in my life that have garnered this much acclaim. The @Edgewater_Restuarant is small (intimate), wood paneled (rustic). You get that family operated feeling that if you go twice in the same month you on a first name basis with the staff. This is all well and good but that ain't what gets you 5 stars in my book. The FOOD! I'm a born and raised Marylander! And Proud of it. And favor a good crustacean dish, especially of the crab variety. And what I have discovered is the best Crab bisque by far! Rich and creamy it taste like liquid velvet with boulders of lump back-fin crabmeat! I will travel just for the soup! For the entree was the typical fisherman's platter broiled not fried (nothing wrong with fried, but a good batter can hide an ok catch). I they told me: we saw you driving up and predicted your meal and immediately sent out a fisherman to retrieve them so by the time you ordered we could then began to cook them; I'd believe them and say thank you. I've been here before (about four or five years ago) and had a delightful meal with great service. This time was sort of rough around the edges. I came for the crab cakes, which is why you should, and I went into it knowing this place does not use local crab. Most, if not all of it, is Indonesian or Venezuelan crab, but it really didn't matter the last time I was here. The crab cakes tasted that good. This time I ordered a cup of cream of crab soup ($7.95) and the broiled jumbo lump crab cake entree ($33.95). The soup has nice, rich flavors, but was almost absent crab meat. I think I came across maybe four lumps and a bunch of smaller pieces. Anyway, more cream soup than crabmeat. I had the salad bar, which came with my entree, and while it was very simple, the ingredients were fresh and tasted great. My crab cakes came last. I ordered mine with a twice-baked potato. The crab cakes were huge and had lots of big lump crabmeat, but also were disappointingly absent of flavor and the crabmeat was mushy. The twice-baked potato was awful. The potato skin was torched and they deposited the mashed up parts of the potato with an ice cream scoop. Not exactly ace for a $34 entree. While I was eating, my drink went dry for an extended period while my waitress gabbed at the bar with friends. It would likely be something I'd let pass if she was busy... waiting on people. I am staying in the Annapolis area for a few months and my one food goal was to find outstanding crab cakes. Mission accomplished! I went to Edgewater Restaurant based on a personal recommendation and it paid off. I got the platter with two jumbo lump crab cakes and I took one home with me because they were very big! The flavor was terrific and they were stuffed with nothing but big, tender chunks of crab. Being from Virginia, it was easily the best crab cake I've ever had. My friend also had the crab cakes. He had lived in Maryland for several years and he too declared the crab cakes the best he has had. The side dishes I had tasted good: a small but very fresh salad bar and red potatoes that appeared to be baked then lightly fried to make the skin crispy. My friend had the twice baked potato and said it was good. We also splurged and had dessert - a large and excellent slice of key lime pie! The food is top notch so expect to pay a little more. Our meal for two with non-alcoholic drinks, two crab cake platters and two pieces of pie came to over $100 with tip. It was absolutely worth it. I hadn't been in years went in the daytime and noticed the waitress was friendly enough. Came back w some friends and the young lady said if we all weren't there (even tho we said he was parking) she couldn't seat us. It was only 3 of us and for 20 min, nobody came to us (just left us at the door). When I asked, the young lady said the kitchen was backed up and there would be a wait. I know it's a family business but teach your staff to at least say something to folk that are standing/waiting. Also, let the bartender know coughing and not covering your mouth in those close quarters is unacceptable. Treat first timers the way you treat regulars, w a smile and see you next time. One of my "Favorite" Restaurants. There is nothing fancy about this place. This is a family owned restaurant and the staff makes you feel like family. The food is delicious!!! My reason for the three stars is that they no longer have the same vendor for their clams. The fried clams were big and had the best taste ever!!!! Everyone that I know of always talk about how good the Fried Clams were at Edgewater. We just had lunch here for the first time (on Easter Sunday). They do take reservations on holidays, but not ordinarily. We were seated right away, and since we preferred a booth, we sat in the bar area. They bring out rolls immediately, and pimento cheese. We both enjoyed the salad bar. I ordered the single crabcake, and my husband ordered Crab Imperial. Their jumbo lump Crab cakes came highly recommended, and we could see what the hype was all about. The chunks of lump crab were HUGE. I ordered green beans and my husband had fries. They have a nice list of side options. We each enjoyed a glass of a Sonoma Chardonnay. The cheese was very good and came as a complimentary lil snack with crackers of all sorts that are at the table, I personally like the cheese paired with the ritz crackers, but the soup was soooo buttery and rich in flavor, with lumps of meaty crabmeat, my friend was so disappointed that he ordered the other soup after he tasted mines. Knowing that I was going to be in Annapolis, I decided that I would try to track down the best crabcake in the area while I was there. I scoured Yelp and found the Edgewater Restaurant, which was touted as the best place for crabcakes on the east coast. Reviewers consistently described the crabcakes as collosal and wrote that they were made with huge lumps of crab and very little filler. A couple of reviewers actually compared the crabcakes to Jerry's famous Crab Bomb and said that they were better. I am a huge fan of Jerry's, so after reading that, I was sold. I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I was when I tasted it. True, the crabcake was huge. But because it was made from crab from Indonesia, it was somewhat dry and virtually flavorless. They were also accurate about the lack of filler--it seemed to be mostly held together with egg--which gave it an odd texture and required tartar sauce to give it some moisture (and any true crabcake connoisseur knows that a good crabcake requires NO tartar.) The crabcake I ordered was accompanied by two huge shrimp stuffed with the same crabcake mixture. Great idea in theory. More blandness in actuality. In short, I'd say that all of the hype surrounding Edgewater's "amazng crabcakes" is much ado about nothing. Stick with Jerry's Seafood or Faidley's in Baltimore if you want an amazing crabcake. read more

Hidden gem located in Edgewater, Maryland (steps away from Annapolis, MD). I took my BF here for his birthday on the recommendation of a fellow foodie. The saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover" definitely applies to this restaurant, located inside of a little blue house. When we walked in we felt as though we were whisked back in time. Everything is dark wood (like in the Ritz-Carlton - - just cozier). There is a full bar immediately to the right when you walk in. Woo hoo!!! The Cream of Crab Soup What I was recommended to get. Called to place what would have been a $70+ order, and the woman who answered sounded so rude, like I was imposing on her, that I literally just hung up. Sad. I cannot recall ever being greeted or talked to like that when calling in an order, and had I been, I would have hung up on them, too. Went with my wife and it was rough from the start with the manger sitting at the bar talking how nice she was being with little the only waitress get all the tables. Started off the night with some cream of crab soup which we never got. My wife ordered their surf and turf but only got surf. Had the manager sitting at the register tallying up everyone eating tickets saying how much they where going to make. Then tried to force us to pay for the soup that never came. We tried calling so we get talk to the manger to see if that was just a simple mix up but yet all she did was blame the server over and over again. This place has a very homely decor with some fantastic seafood. We went with the combo platter which includes shrimp, fish of the day and the crab cake. Its big enough to share with 2 people so that with an appetizer is more then enough food. The salad bar is help yourself which is kind of cool and the service was great. I'm not typically a crab cake person since I love me steamed crabs, but I ate here yesterday for a birthday celebration. Based on the broiled crab cakes, this place would be closer to a 4. You get broiled, huge lumps of tasty crab. ONE of those bad boys is enough for most people, though there's a 2 cake option. If you get the fried ones, you don't get lump. You get filler and a crunchy outer coating. Is it bad? No. It's just not nearly as good as the broiled ones. You'll need the tarter sauce to make it tasty and I'm just not into doing that to crab. The downfall for me is the sides. The salad bar is not up to par - iceberg, chopped beets that were not as vibrant as they should be, etc. That's what I get for trying to keep it healthy, I guess. I also ordered the green beans. Again, meh. Good news - the service is friendly and as prompt as possible. The prices are reasonable too. Let me just say, "Don't judge a book by its cover". My friend took me here on a Friday night and I was a bit skeptical when we first arrived. The location of the restaurant was certainly not in a "hot spot", so naturally I didn't have high expectations walking in. The venue: fairly small, family style restaurant with limited seating but luckily we got seated right away and greeted by our lovely server. She was very polite and energetic which instantly sharpened my mood. For entree, I ordered the stuffed rock fish with crab imperial and the crab imperial was made with all crab meat with barely any filler...and my friend order the fried seafood platter. I was amazed with how big the portion size was, and the food was delicious!!! My only complaint would have to be the wait time for the food and the fact that they didn't have "Rice" as a side dish to pair with my stuffed fish, but definitely... WORTH THE WAIT!! SCORE!!! What is NOT to love about this place? So, it was fairly easy to find, and I went there on a nasty rainy day. The sign is big enough to see from the road. Parking is fair at best. It was a house at first, so it is quaint. There really isn't a hostess per se, so you kinda have to look for the person at the register. From my understanding, you need a complete party in order to be seated. Okay so I got the broiled crab cake, which comes with two sides, I got the salad bar and the twice baked potato. The salad bar was small but fresh, there was pasta salad, potato salad in addition to the other regular salad items. My crab cake was as big as my father's fist! Ah say what!!!! Needless to say, I couldn't finish it. There was no filler, and the pieces of crab had me thinking that I was snacking on some chicken! Yes they were that big! My twice baked potato wasn't my fave, but meh, can't have everything. I tasted my OMs (other mother) string beans and they were good too. She had the shrimp platter, which was awesome as well. They were cooked nicely and the shrimp weren't the size of bait. My brother had the fresh cut french fries (yes I tried those too) and they were cooked great too. Hey I have to do a thorough review, right??!!! I also found out that they will create meals for you, I had the greatest idea to have a crab cake AND wait for it.....shrimp!
