We just had another great meal at Coconut Joe's! This place is casual and enjoys a beautiful spot on the South River. Wide open view towards the Chesapeake Bay makes it a great place to enjoy a sunny afternoon. We sat out on the lowest deck nearest to the water and thoroughly enjoyed the weather and the ambiance. Now to the food. Coconut Joe's is not to be trifled with on the food. While it is a casual restaurant, the food is sold, satisfying and very good. The cream of crab soup was among the best we have ever had. It is not sickeningly thick and that is a good thing! Don't get me wrong - it is thick just not thick like paste. The flavor is rich and robust and there is LOTS of crab meat in there. This soup is not to be missed! In addition, we had the coconut shrimp and these were huge shrimp, beautifully presented, prepared and cooked. Delicious! Is Coconut Joe's serving the highest level of cuisine ever? Certainly not. But it does a surprisingly good job at casual seafood. In the final analysis, Coconut Joe's gives you a relaxing atmosphere, with great service from friendly people and food that will make you smile. Ambiance is refreshing as it is located near water, where boats can dock and come in for food. It's giving Outer Banks vibes. Service, our sweet waitress was the BEST! She was pregnant and was literally the hardest worker in there! It was busy and I did have to go to the bar to get help but when I said "excuse me" I was rudely told to "hang on" by the bartender. I just walked around and got what I needed, super rude girl BUT our waitress was so nice it really made up for it. Red Flag forgiven! Let's get into it! Deviled Eggs - Really Good! Crab cake - Delicious! It's hard for me to agree to a crab cake being good, this one was it! Drinks - Great! The other half agrees, we will be back! We chose to stay local for the unofficial last day of summer, which of course is Labor Day! I rate restaurants relative to what they are. That said, Coconut Joe's Bar & Grill is a perfect blend of ultimate casual dining but with awesome waterfront views and above average food and drinks. Given my own formula, it equals a 5 in my book. The crab topped deviled eggs were loaded with crab and at $14, it was well worth the price. Our crab cake entrées were definitely lump, with just enough filler to keep them together.. Two thumbs up and our drinks were delicious. Our server could not have been more friendly and accommodating and she was pregnant. I can't imagine how she was without being with child! The location was perfect as it was a beautiful day to sit by the water. They have live bands if you stay long enough however I would t recommend sitting upstairs unless you can handle loud music! I'm sad I can't remember the group that was performing as they were really nice. Our waitress was kind and attentive. The menu has some interesting choices on there, matches I would never put together. It actually may work for some others but I wasn't a fan. Chorizo in the mussels.....never! Who thought of that? We came here for the family/kid friendly environment. Fortunate to get a table next to the pirate ship play ground since we came with our son, daughter in law and 2 1/2 year old grandson. Some people are particular- I prefer chips but thoughts these spears were very good. Mussels were delicious. Our food selections were 10 out of 10. Although items were fried it was not greasy. Coconut shrimp was very big pieces and the other food had generous portions. Service was good even with them being busy. We sat out back on long table they do not have wait staff come to the table you have to order drinks and food at the bar if that does not appeal to you there is several places to sit inside as well. The pineapple jalapeño 4/10 wasn't the best so we sent them back for the painkillers which was spot on. We enjoyed having shade and sun off and on with the covered area. Today I went to Coconut Joes in search of live music on the water. I wanted to seat at on of the bar tables up front rather than the bar(I don't drink). The tables say you need to be seated by a hostess. So I walked over to the hostess stand and asked to be seated at one of the many open tables there rather than sit at the bar. She refused to allow me to sit even though i specifically wanted to watch and listen to the band. She told me it'd be over an hour wait. I let her know that I just wanted to watch the band and have a Diet Coke and I'm happy to wait for the kitchen to catch up. She really told me that unless I wanted to go to the bar, there was no other option. That's wrong and management should inform their host staff. I gotta say I've never really had a great experience a coconut Joe's and this seals the deal I'll never return. read more

The Pier has a new name and is under new ownership & management. It is now Coconut Joe's (as it was a few years ago). We had lunch there today, and everything is GREATLY improved. We were totally impressed. We ordered the Deviled Eggs Chesapeake. They came out with a huge chunk of jumbo lump crabmeat on each egg. The cream of crab soup was excellent (the serving sizes are more like a bowl, not a cup, so the prices were very reasonable for the quantity served). We asked to sit in the back (inside upper deck), where the bartenders take care of you. Our server was Callie, and she was very pleasant. Great spot to dine with kids! The food was good, even the kids ate all their meal from the kids menu and they are picky. They loved the butter noodles and soft pretzels. The wings were meaty. As expected, the drink list wasn't really our thing, but they offered one $4 game-day HH IPA beer & that worked fine- The band set up in the front area of the main dining area- they had minimal seating offered in the area, with the house rule picnic & high top tables were only for those ordering food- so just grabbing drinks when we weren't able to find bar seats, we found ourselves lingering against the wall off to the side- again that worked fine- During intermission we explored the space & were surprisingly impressed with how much they had to offer in the way of ambiance: -a complete pirate ship kids play area, fenced in allowing kids to play without wandering away -beautiful outdoor along the water seating laid out in rows or circle pit areas for hanging out with our drinks, enjoying the boat views -outdoor bar on the pier offering more great water viewing ambiance - back bar high top table areas positive aspect, the audio of the band carried all throughout each area, so while we began exploring during intermission we were able to remain hanging out on the water & still catch the show volumes very friendly waitstaff- as busy as the place was they kept lines moving, kept drinks coming quickly, and made quality drinks (so said our friends) would definitely visit again for another show- or bring the kids to enjoy the play area while we enjoy the water views read more

When we asked about it, the staff admitted it's a known issue--which makes it even worse. On top of that, the service was inattentive. Despite our section not being busy, no one checked on us or offered drink refills. To make matters worse, they automatically added a 20% gratuity without any mention beforehand, despite the lackluster service. The food? Completely forgettable--not worth the hassle. If the owners know this is a recurring issue, why haven't they done anything about it? Some basic indoor fans or a proper pest solution would go a long way. Until they take cleanliness and customer service seriously, I absolutely do not recommend this place.I considered reporting this place to the health inspectors. By far the worst restaurant. Aside from the bar staff being extremely slow with only four guest at the bar there were children running around unsupervised. We really enjoyed our dinner here! My best friend and her husband and their two young girls met up with my husband and I are our two young kids. The kids had an absolute ball playing on the pirate ship! The outdoor play area is enclosed so they can't wander away or out of sight. My kids hardly wanted to eat dinner because they were having so much fun playing. We were sat at a table right by the ship so we could see the kids easily which was great. We had the coconut shrimp (delicious), chips and guac, a burger, a chicken sandwich, a crabcake, and a rice bowl. All of the food was exactly as described on the menu and really tasty. We also had a painkiller and a key lime crush, and a few beers between us. There was an acoustic guitarist when we got there and it seemed like a full band was setting up when we were leaving (around 8pm). I'm so shocked by the poor reviews! Came last saturday and it was exactly as expected. You obviously come here to enjoy the view with a good drink. There was a short wait, but we opted out to sit in the high top area in the back. It was very hot, and there were no fans, but that's why there was no wait. You can wait and get a fanned area. It was very crowded but we didn't wait too long for our drinks or food. The servers weren't overly helpful, but again, it was a busy Saturday in the back bar. The crowd ranged from teenagers to older folk, with the majority of people enjoying the bar. I was surprised at how good the food was! We ordered the crab dip, salmon BLT, and shrimp tacos. The salmon was so good and there were so many shrimp on the tacos! The whole facility had tons of cool areas, a children's sandy play area, another bar out back on the grass, and a sunset watching area with tons of Adirondack chairs. We selected this location because of the family friendly vibe w the playground. Kids enjoyed it. We waited about 30 minutes on a Friday night to get seated at the picnic tables so we could see our kids on the playground. Ambiance was good. A live band was coming on which was cool. Food was average. My crab cakes were seasoned well but the zucchini was not good at all. All of this is to be expected on a Friday summer night at a busy waterfront restaurant. The service is what we were disappointed with. We were at our table for about 1hr 15 minutes. We immediately ordered 2 drinks, the kids meals, chips and guacamole (thinking that would come out asap for the kids to munch on) and fried pickles. We waited about 20 minutes for the appetizers and kids meals. Then less than 5 minutes later our full meals came out from another server. We didn't see our server for a while after that. I had to get up and get my own salt and pepper and wanted more of their dill ranch. We ordered our third drinks and waited a while without them coming. We decided to ask to have them removed from the check. For reference, I took both of my children to the bathroom separately at this point. As you can see I don't have any food in front of me!?!? What I thought I ordered and what I got were polar opposite. I ordered BBQ Shrimp on a Skewer with Grilled Pineapple and got shrimp with tons of bbq sauce! The manager "Crews" rudely advised me that it was my fault for assuming that and did not even attempt to make it right. The bbq sauce had a strong scent that I couldn't take. The crabcake sandwhiches would have been great except they were served cold. The french fries were very good, hot and crispy. The location is on the water and you get a nice fall breeze. Only second time I tried this place, everyone seemed in good spirits and friendly. The band was absolutely wonderful people sang along and dancing all around the place. small menu with varied items the shrimp, avacado ,rice bowl was very good. The place was cute and pretty clean inside but that's where it ends. The drinks were watered down several of us had orange crushes that had no flavor let along orange juice. tried it twice the second time instead of orange it tasted like lime juice was over powering the orange juice. We watched an older gentleman squeeze juices into containers but never clean the juicer between fruited leaves. Hence why our orange tasted like lime.‍ Another friend was not drinking an ordered diet cokes again, so watered down ridiculous. Then I attempted "fresh" tortilla chips, guacamole and salsa appetizer and the dip was very good but chips stale as could be! Another friend ordered a piece of Smithfield chocolate cake again stale. Atleast we had a good time together listening to a good band but that said, we could have done without the people next to us at the bar vaping something other than the norm and acting stupid. Mediocre food but what really turned us off was all of the dead bugs along the window sill where we were eating-disgusting and inexcusable.

I'm not sure what my review would have been pre kids, but with kids absolutely 5 stars. We sat on a picnic table overlooking the pirate ship play area (fenced in) and had a meal somewhat in peace (plus a baby haha) while our toddler had a blast. Pretty view of the water. Fun tropical drinks to pretend you're at a serious beach. Food was good, nothing to write home about, but I so very much wish we lived closer. We went to lunch to celebrate my birthday. Our server Emma Jean was so friendly and an absolute delight. She brightened up my birthday. We sat outside and it was a beautiful day. We started with crab dip and pretzels which was very good. It could have had more crab in it. Never too much crab. Our main dishes were salmon with cilantro lime rice and sweet potato fries, hawaiian pizza with teriyaki glaze, black chicken sandwich with fries, and a shrimp rice bowl.
