I cannot recommend Tai enough - she is so sweet and detail oriented and thoughtful! I went to her once before when she was at a different salon around start of summer this year. She is incredibly talented and the salon had this rustic vibe with the beautiful plants, furnishing, and lighting fixtures. I could not recommend Kati at Population more highly - she is the BEST!! I bounced around between different stylists across SF before finally finding Population and Kati! I've now been seeing Kati for the past 5+ years.. I've trusted her with my hair for all of the important milestones in my life since then - from getting engaged, starting a new job, getting married, and now moving across the country! I've gotten partial and full balayages from Kati, and have been ecstatic about the results every single time. It is obvious that Kati cares so much about her clients and the work that she does. She really got to know me and my hair, and made such thoughtful recommendations at my appointments. I always walk away feeling excited and confident about my hair after my appointments. Kati is also just such a lovely person, and the time flies by chatting with her while she works! I've moved to the east coast, but as much as I can, I plan to align my hair appointments with my work trips back to SF - that's how good she is!! Used to be great. Service has slipped in past 2+ years hard. I've been coming since 2015. Had an appointment that I needed to reschedule. I called 6 or 7 times over two days and never reached a human. I got a canned policy reply with no clear answer on whether my appointment was canceled or if I'd be charged up to $300. Policies are fine. Silence isn't. And then they just charged me $300. Population, please answer the phone during business hours, or at least be responsive on text and confirm charges in plain language. I'll be finding a new salon. read more

Go see my hair doctor Dalia, stat! She is consistent, kind, genuine, and asks the right questions so she understands what it is I like about a picture I'm showing her. The vibe at Population is gorgeous, from the waiting furniture to the beautiful plant walls to the tatted up stylists with their unique personalities and style. I love the tea or wine refreshment offer when I check in, too. There are many levels of stylists (read: prices) to choose from. You might hesitate choosing a junior level when your hair deserves top notch, right? Sure, but I'm saying my girl, Dalia, is "junior" and she's given me the best lewk and service EVER. I love asking her questions to understand how she styles my hair at the end, and what techniques I can learn myself. She has great advice for product and never tries to oversell me. TL:DR; I have been looking for a new hair salon ever since I moved to San Francisco and I had heard a lot about Population. It's trendy, cute, has beautiful interior and also has super cool stylists! They fixed my chunky highlights that I got elsewhere in the city which was just perfect. Brittany is amazing!! All the stylists here have years of experience, they have "ranks," which you can see when you book "JR," "MID," "Senior," etc. The more senior they are, the more expensive the appointment is. Do want to point out for those who are budget conscious that the pricing (at least from what I have been told) is pretty standard for the city! You definitely pay for what you get - amazing color and wonderful attention to detail. Their assistants also help which is super cool to see the community they have created here. My balayage in particular was everything I have always wanted. I literally told Brittany I just wanted lighter and she gave me exactly that and more. They use high end products and each stylist brings their own tools. Brittany had a wonderful Dyson air dryer which inspired me to look into getting my own! What really gives Population 5 stars is the ambience they create while you're in the salon, I went to the Nopa one and they really do try to give it that farmhouse and rustic edgy feeling. They came back to me a week later and charged me for a no-show anyway. Apparently their staff wasn't properly trained and gave me misinformation. If I had known I was going to be charged, I would have shown up with my sick kid (which is bad for him, and bad for business). I've been going here for years. I had a very bad experience at this Salon and am still in shock by this. Below is detail on my experience and I've also shared pictures to go with the detail. The first picture is my hair before I ever went to Population for color. On my first trip to Population Salon, I tell the stylist I want natural caramel highlights.She then proceeds to bleach my hair for an hour. I have never had bleach done for this long. Then she washes out the bleach and says she is going to put on a glaze. The second picture is what my hair looks like after the bleach is washed out and before the glaze. I proceed to tell her I am a little concerned because it is way lighter than I want it to be. She gets mad at me and tells me that I "broke her rule" and that I'm not allowed to look at it until she says I can. Then she puts on the glaze and blow dries my hair. I am shocked by how my hair does not have caramel highlights, but instead is essentially blonde. I am left speechless and don't say anything to her about not liking it so I can go home to think. The third picture is the color that she made my hair I then decide this is unacceptable and I call the salon to tell them how unhappy I am and it needs to be fixed. I suggest that maybe if I senior stylist could fix it that would be great because I am very unhappy and I'm not sure the current stylist knows what she is doing. Their response is to not address me working with a senior stylist and instead that I go back to the same stylist to have it fixed. I am worried but remain positive. I show the stylist reference photos (4th, 5th, 6th picture) of what kind of caramel highlights I am looking for (including a picture of highlights I got done last year at a different salon that I loved). When I get to the salon to get it fixed the stylist says that the salon closes in 45 minutes and that is all the time we have. I am shocked by this as I am clearly very unhappy about my hair and am now worried about her rushing the process. She also tells me that there was a miscommunication and that she thought I said I wanted "beach blonde highlights", clearly trying to cover up for the fact that the highlights are not caramel but instead blonde. Then she puts the glaze on. She tells me she only has time to partially blow dry my hair because the salon is closing. She then proceeds to blow dry a part of my hair. She then stops and asks me what I think. I am in shock by what she did by my hair. Not only did she not make my highlights caramel, she proceeded to make my entire head of hair dark brown with a red tint. The seventh picture is what it looked like. I express that I am unhappy and explain why. She then proceeds to start crying and walk out of the room. I am in shock and walk out of the salon. Then I am sitting in my car, I look down and there is hair dye dripping out of my hair onto my white $500 Sezane jacket. She did not properly remove the dye from my hair. The eighth picture is what it looked like. I normally don't write reviews but I am shocked by this $400 experience that has ruined my hair and caused significant inconveniences. I am obsessed with Frida Flores! She's amazing at what she does. I went went to her after another stylist had covered my roots but left the bottom of my hair a completely different color. I had very little knowledge about the process / chemicals used by the other stylist and Frida was able to fix. Next time I went to Frida I got a bit more adventurous and she added dimension to my all dark brown hair. Her color technique and final product are so amazing. It's probably the best highlights/ balayage I've had in my life. She also helped guide me in choosing the best tones for my skin color (warm v cool tones). I came in for a balayage and Michelle knocked it out of the park! My hair had a grown out balayage from last year, a brown color above it from a previous dye, and dark black roots. Michelle painted on such a natural and flattering balayage, that I could barely recognize myself! The atmosphere is super trendy -- lots of greenery and modern interior items. Salon Cancelled Appointment with 1 Hour's Notice I am really frustrated by my experience with Taylor and Population Salon. I had my first appointment booked with Taylor for this Saturday. The morning of the appointment, I received a text saying Taylor had called in sick and my appointment would need to be rescheduled. While I understand that things like this happen, I notice that other Yelp reviewers have lodged similar complaints about this stylist in recent weeks. Upon calling the salon, I was informed that should I want a Saturday appointment I would have to wait over a month. This was especially frustrating, as I had booked my original appointment over 6 weeks ago for the sole purpose of having a weekend appointment. The fact that I had an existing appointment was of little consequence and the Salon was not particularly interested in being accommodating. They gave me a single window of availability for the rest of October. TLDR: If I had cancelled with such little notice, I would have had to pay $$$. Had my first appointment booked with Taylor this past weekend for a root touch-up (and I had my next appointment booked with her as well for a root touch-up, cut and partial balayage), but received a text the morning of my appointment that Taylor had called in (on Labor Day weekend) and they would need to reschedule. I promptly cancelled my future appointments, and scrambled to find someone else that could accommodate me. I ended up going to Salon Stilo in Burlingame that same afternoon and they were amazing! Deeply disappointed in this service. They didn't properly wash my hair - got dye over my pillow. It was all in my ears. Haircut was with Reuben who was the senior artist. He got to me about 15 minutes late which I didn't mind at all. he talked with me for 30 seconds, grabbed toner, started applying it on one side and then had an assistant take over. He went to start another haircut, did their shampoo/condition/ and dye completely while I was sitting waiting with dye in my hair for way too long. Someone else also came to put toner in my hair and rinsed it. So basically all he did was cut my hair which he did in 1 minute. Total time at salon was 2.5 and less than 15 minutes of that was spent with a stylist. Someone had recommended this place to me for precision and I can't say I've had a worse hair cutting service. Anyways I just wanted a trim and she didn't ask me the basic questions as too how I wear my hair or what kind of hair do I have? she ended up cutting my curly hair in a way very choppy and top heavy which wavy or curly hair IS A NO NO NO. Just really wanted a trim not a new hair style! The cut was uneven see photos, so bad my dad noticed it at a family gathering .... since I usually wear it curly I also thought it was weird she kept trying to UPSELL ME on dying my hair throughout the entire appointment. I don't think I've ever posted a review, but want to talk about my appointment. I am a nervous client when it comes to getting my haircut. I've had my share of botched cuts and I never feel like stylists get my bangs quite right, but Erin was amazing!! I didn't change much and really just came in for an overall trim and shaping to bring some life back to my hair but Erin really nailed it. She did a short consult before the cut and really listened to work out what I was looking for. I feel like she really nailed my bangs and my hair feels waaay healthier and a bit lighter while still being long enough to get into a braid for my runs. (Im also awful with small talk in these sorts of situations but she was really nice.) I'm working up the courage to do a bigger chop eventually and would love to go back to her :) read more

I appreciate businesses that are doing their best during the covid pandemic, but I wish I would have known ahead of time that they won't see anyone who works in healthcare on the frontlines. I made this appointment a month in advance and was really looking forward to getting my hair done. When I came in they asked their screening questions and asked if I have come in close contact with any covid positive people. I told the front desk person that I was an RN and worked with covid patients. He said he needed to check with his manager if it was ok for me to be seen because of that. I then said that it has been more than two weeks since I've directly cared for a covid patient, and his response was "well if that's the truth." And my response was, "I wouldn't lie about that." It's literally part of my job to care for people affected by covid, why would I lie about my contact with them and further the spread. So thank you, front desk person, for accusing me of lying about my exposure to covid. It felt really sincere when you then told me "we appreciate what you do" after that. I understand it is hard to open during this time and people have to be extra careful, but per the CDC guidelines I felt I was safe to be seen as a client. I have not had direct contact (aka a covid positive patient was not assigned to me as a nurse) with a covid patient in the last 2 weeks, and am currently asymptomatic. Regardless, I just wish I would have known they won't see you if you work with covid patients period, so I didn't drive all the way out there and waste my time. Pretty humiliating to show up and be refused service for being a nurse on the frontlines. read more

I feel obligated to warn people that Population is far from the hip high-end salon they make themselves out to be online. If they ruin your hair they will send you out the door with no apology and just let you know "you aren't allowed back". I asked for the white blonde look. I chose a stylist, who had posted pictures of the exact hair I wanted. I asked for a bleach and tone and was advised to do a balayage instead after discussing damage and maintenance. You can check out the pictures to see the blue, white, and brown hair I ended up with. My stylist promised she could fix my hair. I wanted the blue out, and my roots to be blended. My hair was now completely compromised and I didn't want more bleach poured on. Attached you can see the red and gray hair I ended up with. What possessed someone to pour dark red dye all over someones roots that 1) doesn't have dark red hair to begin with and 2) wants to be a bright white blonde?! I was, and still am, so completely sad and confused by this. What really drove me to post this review is the way I was treated and dismissed after the damage was done. My stylist was unapologetic although admitted it was "not what we had agreed upon". Then the manager was incredibly rude and wouldn't give me the full refund unless I filed a complaint. She also let me know I was not allowed back at Population now that they were giving me a refund (which was OFFERED to me by my stylist). I will happily not be returning. I ended up going to Meche Salon in LA and they did their very best to get the red out and give me products that might revive my seriously damaged hair. $700 and 7 hours later and the red is gone. Brittle, breaking, falling out. My hair is ruined. I can't blow dry it or put any heat on it and am constantly doing deep conditioners to try and bring it back to life. Population not only ruined my hair, but treated me horribly in the process. I am still waiting for the full refund to process in my bank account (over a month later). read more

GOD HELP ME. They messed up my hair and I have asked multiple times for the owner to contact me and nothing. NOTHING. I had to put my hair up in a bun for 2 weeks because it was not appropriate for me to leave down. I am forever frightened for the rest of my life from my experience here. The color turned out nothing like how I had asked. I have black hair and wanted to have an ombre to gray done. I had a one inch "layer" of black then BLUNT change to this orangey brown color because the bleach was incorrectly applied and BURNED MY SCALP. My skin is still flaking from that incident. Then the colors past that orangey brown turn a kaleidoscope of colors. There is some gray, some GREEN, some weird tints of purple. The stylist who did do my hair, Jay, called me and tried to talk me back into coming there but I am too traumatized. And no, I didn't want green hair. No, I didn't want a line of color across my hair. No, I didn't want a burning scalp. No, I didn't want any of what happen done to me again. My hair is extremely brittle now and falling off in little chunks. I had to pay another $500 at another salon to get this fixed because nobody here is helping me out. All I want is a full refund at this point. I will never recommend someone to get their hair done here not only due to their employees not knowing what they're doing or owning up to their mistakes but the shit customer service for when I have tried to reach out for help. Writing my first Yelp review to tell how bad of service and treatment I received. Came in here for the first time over the holiday season to refresh my bangs. Not a very tough task. Scheduled my appointment at 10:15. Came in at 10:10 and waited for my hair stylist, Rudy. One of the hairstylist's rain drenched wet dog jumps into my lap. No one cares to say a thing. I don't mind dogs, so it's ok, i push it off of me, but the dog's owner was standing a few feet from me and didn't even care for the dog. Rude and unwelcoming. Anyway, on to my haircut. At 10:30, I was sat down by Rudy, he asks me what I wanted to do with my bangs. I tell him blunt bangs swooping upward. He starts trimming my bangs, sloppily, and with shaking hands. 3 minutes later he tells me he's done. $18 dollars later, I come home, take a closer look at my haircut. (I even pulled photos from their Instagram account and showed examples of what I liked) She suggested doing an all over color.. No thanks, i like the dimension. She then said she wouldn't go lighter on me, bc it pulls a lot of warmth..but ive been lighter before and i just wanted a few pieces here and there, perhaps around the face..she agreed. she then asked if i liked my dark brown low lights and we can pull some of that through from the roots...cool, we had a plan. A few mins later, she brings over her coworker and he suggests going all dark at the back of my head..adding some zig zag foils around my face, but still keeping it light. Sounds good. I felt like the only difference was that we would go dark towards the back, which is ok and nothing too different from what we spoke about earlier. After a color, toner and shampoo I could still see my black roots. No root coverage, no gradation from dark to light in color. There was no pattern just completely looked like she toned down my highlights that i had months ago. No bright pieces framing my face..The back of my head still had some highlighted pieces which didn't make sense bc i thought we were getting rid of it. I expected it to be lighter around the face and gradually get darker towards the back of my head. But instead i looked like my hair didnt get touched, still had inch roots no matter which way i part it. When i brought this to her attention, she mentioned to me again about going with an all over color. Its really frustrating having to hear the same suggestions you said no to prior! I keep playing this in my head and wonder when did the communication get lost...but i honestly believe that she didn't know how to work with my hair and all the "all over color - no highlighting" hesitation is just lack of confidence and experience. I find that sad..bc if you are junior stylist i would expect there be an urgency to please your client, prove your talent and be a little more gutsy. read more

Monica was amazing! I had been dreading finding a salon and going for balayage, and I kept thinking about Population. Finally made an appointment and am super happy; Monica and I talked cut and color, she made sure I was happy with what she recommended for the cut and didn't assume I know everything (or anything!) about hair coloring- I don't, as I hadn't colored it in 10+ years! She explained the process and made me feel comfortable, talked when appropriate and let me sit and read when she was doing the color. Kristin is a wizard! I have naturally brown hair and recently have been going grey (prematurely). I booked a partial highlight session with Kristin and couldn't be happier with the results. She blended the color so well, you can't even see the grey anymore. Also, she really got the tone correct. Sometimes when I get highlights I feel like it makes my complexion look ruddy or washed out, but she really understood which tone would bring out the best in my complexion. I looked all over for a new salon in San Francisco after feeling like I was overpaying for the attention I received at the one I previously went to. I was drawn to Population due to the beautiful environment, but the stylists portfolios are amazing as well. I chose Taylor as my stylist and could not be happier with the result every time. I'm surprised at some of the other reviews that mention her because I don't see any of that - she is the best! So sweet, personable, and helpful; it's like catching up with a friend every time! And she pays attention to detail and asks a lot of questions about what you want before she begins so that there's a mutual understanding. Whenever I didn't know exactly what I wanted she has given suggestions that ended up being the favorite cuts/colors I've ever done. I definitely wouldn't hesitate to go see Taylor, highly recommend! YAY SYLVIE! I came to Population on a recommendation from a coworker who had followed Sylvie from her previous salon. It was a good recommendation. Sylvie does a great job with my hair and doesn't object like my last stylist when I say I want to cut it all off and keep it short! The salon itself is really cute, it has this funky early-20th-century look with galvanized steel tubs and light fixtures and leather couches, and a piano. If you show up early, they'll pour you a glass of wine or a cup of tea while you wait for your stylist. And... and... I CAN BRING MY DOG! Sylvie has the most adorable terrier mix named Barnaby; the first time I came there I told her about my dachshund puppy, and she told me to bring her next time. I did, and Basil and Barnaby had a great time romping around the (empty, since I was the last appointment of the day) salon while Sylvie cut my hair. So much easier to drop in and get a cut after work when I don't have to worry about getting home to let the dog out! Five stars! read more

I will note that I went here first to get balayage, which was fine (not amazing but in no way bad) but when I went back to get my grey covered, I saw someone new and just had a horrible experience. As i said I went to get my grey roots covered, and asked for a tone for the balayage. When my stylist finished drying my hair, I realised it was completely black. When i complained he told me he had done it on purpose and that it was a tint and would wash out..... given that I was visibly upset i was kind of surprised how matter of fact he was. He didn't really seem to care that he had just ruined the balyage i had recently spent over $500 trying to achieve in that very salon.... Anyway several months later the black did not wash out and I ended up going to a different salon to do a colour correction.... I really do not recommend this salon, it doesn't have a very welcoming vibe and quite honestly the level of hipster is a bit exhausting. read more

Was happy with my first experience here. I got a partial balayage from Joanna and she crushed it. She listened to what I wanted and finished the coloring in around two hours which was a very reasonable time given that I've been to salons that take forever. Population also has super cute decor and a great general vibe in my opinion. Not a bad place to be when you're sitting stagnant in a chair for several hours. Price was around average ($200-250) compared to other salons I'd looked into with the same services. read more

Giving Population 5 stars for pricing! I can't believe I've been paying the same price to get my hair cut in San Jose when I could have gone right down the street. I went to Sylvie for a basic cut, and she gave me fantastic layers. I decided then that I would go back for some summer highlights, and she did a full balayage. I LOVE it!! Can't believe how well it's lasted. I really enjoyed the ambiance of this place as well as its dog-friendly policy! Overall, I don't think it gets better than Population for SF beauty queens and kings. read more

My GOODNESS! My hair is perfect. I am terrible at articulating what I want, but somehow Courtney read me and I can't even believe how gorgeous my hair is. If I ever move out of state (hopefully not!), I will return to SF for her to do my hair. It amazes me every time I look at it. Details: I've had ombre for a few years, but wanted it "more extreme".
