One month passed by I called and I tried to make an appointment. It rang 3 times and went to voicemail. I kept calling and calling and it still doing the same thing. I've been going to Dr. Zhao for about 9 yrs, mostly doing routine care - cleanings, a few cavities, and some bonding work (serves cosmetic & preventive purposes - definitely worth it even when not covered by insurance since it'll last for months if not +yr and the per day cost is low while the prevention is worthwhile). I dragged my feet on writing a review until now - this past month Dr. Zhao played a critical role in finishing my dental implant and he did an amazing job! I have tetracycline staining so I was worried it'll be difficult to match the color but Dr. Zhao basically choose a 99% perfect match! I'm very happy with the color. Color and size/fit are critical because this is a front tooth and he also replaced an old crown on the adjacent tooth because I wanted the size and color to match (that +20yo old one was too large and white). Today is my 2nd day with my two new crowns and I'm very happy with how they look and feel. I had confidence going into this because Dr. Zhao gave me a clear explanation of different options for crown materials and the alternatives in case the best option wasn't doable in my case (lucky the best option worked). This is what I really appreciate about Dr. Zhao - he tells you in advance the pros and cons and is upfront about the costs and why etc., there are no surprises. Another example is that I asked him about doing a bridge the other year and he gave me the honest truth about the pros and cons of it and I decided against doing it. Finally, one of the best things about Dr. Zhao is that you barely feel much when he needs to numb your mouth, he has a very gentle touch in giving shots. I asked for a tooth extraction. Instead I was advised to get a root canal. Because " said tooth was not calcified , and it was in an important position" 2.5 hours later & excruciating pain now for 8 months ...i have advanced TMJ. & trigeminal neuralgia . I've had my fair share of bad experiences with dentists. In fact, in the last 6 years I've gone to 3 different ones (all in Southern CA). The first one extracted my impacted wisdom teeth WITHOUT putting me under, leaving me with permanent nerve damage on my bottom left jaw. The second one performed a root canal on a tooth, and didn't quite get all the root out leaving me a very painful tooth that still needs surgery done to it. The third one was fine. They filled my cavities and cleaned my teeth. But then I moved 400 miles up north. After all these years I finally got dental insurance, and Dr. Zhao was on the list of Bay Area dentists that accepted my insurance. I looked up all the others and they had terrible reviews. Saddened by a seemingly poor selection of doctors I decided to go ahead and check the reviews on Zhao who was in the city (I'm in East Bay). He had great reviews so I thought I'd take a chance. Seeing as my insurance didn't kick in until today I waited to make an appointment. During the weekend though I had excruciating jaw aches that left me in tears. In a desperate attempt I said "F**K dental insurance, I'm going anywhere that can take me on a weekend!" That was nowhere. So I waited until today and called Dr. Zhao's office. I explained my problem, and they kindly scheduled me for a same day appointment. I didn't have to wait long and the whole procedure was very straight forward. He found the sources for my tremendous pain and fixed the things he could while he referred me to a specialist for perhaps the most painful thing. So yes, I left a bit disappointed, but hopeful that in fixing some of the problems the pain wouldn't be AS bad. He also gave me a script for antibiotics. He was pretty gentle and none of the procedures he provided caused the slightest pain. I'm pretty sure I haven't felt so good about a dentist in the past 6 years. He's honest about cavities after coming here for a second opinion and spends time with patients as needed for a thorough inspection. For once in my life I was perfectly on time for my appointment (11:30am), and I was rewarded with a 45 minute wait. I don't mind the wait so much, but what I would've appreciated in this situation was honesty. I noticed when I was checking in that the dentist seemed busy with another patient and asked how long the wait would be. The receptionist said about 10-15 minutes, explaining that there was an emergency this morning and now he was still with his previous client. Understandable. That was at about 11:40am (due to paperwork - I was a new patient). at 12pm, I was brought to an empty patient room. Thank god I asked for some of the magazines to look at, because it wasn't until 10 minutes later that an assistant came in to take my x-rays and another 10 before Dr. Zhao himself came in for the check-up. To be fair, Dr. Zhao was very professional and took his time with me (though I'm sure he was crazy behind schedule by then). He patiently listened to all my questions and explained everything. He could've been a little more warm/personable upon our meeting (the first time he walked into the room, he didn't introduce himself or say hello, he just went to my chart, asked "You're Ziyan?", and started the check-up). It turned out I had two gaps or whatever in old fillings that were likely to turn into cavities eventually. It would've been the same cost financially to fix it at this early stage or later, but later on it would have cost more time and they would have dug deeper into my teeth, so I opted to drill these out and fill them in now. It only took about 10 minutes, but cost $170 for two (ouch). I also want to note that the staff *is* very efficient and professional. They gave me several reminder calls, made sure I had switched my insurance plan to make Dr. Zhao my main dentist (and even took my information to call them and double check themselves), and knew exactly what my plan covered in the appointment and what my co-pays would be for additional procedures. Despite the long wait, I will stick with Dr. Zhao. But to the staff: please just be honest about the wait! I'm understanding of emergencies happening, but it's frustrating to expect a 15 minute wait and have it end up being 45. read more

I have a DMO which makes me choose a primary care dentist, and I chose Edward Zhao after moving a few months back. At first I couldn't get anyone to answer the phone and no one ever returned my calls. Finally I talked to someone, and she said they don't take my insurance and hung up on me, even though they are clearly listed as my provider. I was denied service and had to wait until I could change my primary provider again. read more

My dental plan (Blue Shield HMO) is lousy. From Yelp reviewers' perspectives, most of the dentists on its plan are either monsters, or rip-off artists who recommend unnecessary procedures. My first impression of Dr. Zhao was that he was a big exception to the rule. He was nice, did the cleanings himself, and seemed reasonable. Yes, a no-frills office for sure, but seemed decent. Later, he recommended some procedures that sounded unusual and a bit expensive (although nothing like what Gentle Dental tries to pull off). They sounded urgent, but I didn't want to spend the money then... so I waited and hoped all would be okay. Now, storytime: when I was 8, I had a run-in with a wall (literally... well, a tight corner at least) and chipped my new and shiny front two teeth. They replaced the chips with bonding. Unfortunately, every couple of years I'll bite down on something wrong, and the bonding will come off and it needs to be replaced. Annoying but not painful. When I went to Dr. Zhao to have this fixed, he said my payment was $150 per tooth because it was cosmetic. Well, okay. Not happy but could deal. The fix-up job he did was not the best; decent, but I could tell that it wasn't going to last long (I've had this done several times now, so I have a sense). Indeed, it just happened again this week, a mere 6 months later (instead of lasting 2-3 years). This time, I went to my new dentist in Oakland (finally moved to the east bay) - a genuine 5-star dentist (counting my blessings he's on my plan!). And what did he put down as the co-pay? $27. That's right - Dr. Zhao clearly was categorizing the work through the insurance so that he would be paid far more, unnecessarily, out of my pocket. Two years ago I would have given him 4 stars. A year ago I might have said 3 stars. But this lack of ethical treatment, and the quality of the work being so-so, reduces it again. Good luck to all of those on Blue Shield Dental HMO. He's definitely better than others, but watch your back, and I recommend calling the HMO directly to discuss out-of-pocket charges if they feel high. UPDATE: That Oakland dentist stopped taking the HMO plan. Too bad - I've received dozens of messages with people on the same plan seeking a better dentist. Now that I live in Sebastopol I *did* find someone great in Santa Rosa... but not in the Bay Area proper. Good luck to all Blue Shield Dental HMO peeps! read more

We've been with Dr. Zhao for more than 15 years. He's very respectful of our time and is great at his job. He is knowledgeable, no nonsense, and extremely efficient. I was a patient of Dr. Zhao for many years. He's a good dentist. But I disliked his billing practices, so after a job change I decided to seek a new dentist. Although he's a competent dentist, over time many billing issues contributed to my dissatisfaction. My old expensive premium insurance covered any composite fillings 100%. But Dr. Zhao insisted that cost coverage was only partial, and that I had to pay the difference on the spot (normally a dentist would bill the insurance first, and then send me a bill for any difference not covered). At the end of the year I found that he had charged the entire amount he quoted to my insurance and was paid in full, even though I had already paid him a % of that amount. The receptionist /office manager has no itemized billing and the quoted amounts kept changing, so I was never able to resolve this matter. In my opinion, it was a ripoff. Also, many times he seemed more concerned about making a profit from each office visit. Suggesting small procedures, adding $50 here and there. One time, I had asked about orthodontic procedures and he referred me to Orthoworks. After the initial consultation (nice doctors), I decided against their suggested cosmetic work. During my next teeth cleaning appointment, Dr Zhao was clearly upset when I confirmed declining the cosmetic work. Later, I saw a magazine ad on how dentists can get a big commission for referring patients to Orthoworks (about $1K-2K). Sadly, in my search for a new better dentist (less concerned about money), I've found some who are far worse. Hence my 3 star rating, in spite of the problems I experienced. read more

I came here originally because of the Yelp reviews. I knew something was off when the first visit consisted of "oh you need these services...you need to do this." I've always had a good dental record (no cavities/fillings, flossed, etc), but decided to get a second opinion just in case The other dentists told me that was bs. I was too lazy to find another dentist so just scheduled the second cleaning...had to cancel because of work and the next available appoint will always be at least 4 months later. Hey, great for this place if they have a lot of people, but sucks for those who have an unpredictable work schedule. Also, doesn't help that the people working there aren't that friendly. Initial impression, 2 stars. New patient. Staff picked up phone and didn't tell me her name. It was pretty blunt. I called today, March 9th, and their first available appointment for new patients is June 25th. Not sure what to think of it but 3 months is a long wait for a dentist appointment. I wondered if they have a block time every day for emergencies. But I did ask if they're digital or film, and they're a digital xray office. Update: Entered at 9.. filled out forms. Got seated at 9:15. Waited for the doctor until 9:30. I didn't expect to wait that long. Dr. Zhao did a brief cleaning, 15 minutes tops. It felt like he didn't clean at all. I know I have a HMO plan but still. He didn't even look at the x-rays I brought in with me. Anyways, I didn't particularly like this office. I do work for another dentist in the same building and about 2 months after my appointment I asked her to give me a cleaning because I was getting my wisdom teeth extracted and I didn't want bacteria to affect my healing process. She went in, and low and behold, she had to do scaling and root planing... which hurts A LOT. I do floss every day with few exceptions (when I fall asleep after work/school) so I should have no calculus after only 2 months if my cleaning was thorough. Final impression, 1 star. I think I would have had a better experience if I went to one of those clinics or a dental school (even with the long waits). read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Zhao's for 2.5 years now and I'm happy. :) For dental coverage, I've had both Delta Dental and MetLife, and this office has accepted both. Yes! Stella, his receptionist, is fabulous. She's always super friendly and she's great on the phone (and always responsive when I leave voicemails). They have an electronic xray/imaging system and records seem to be moving completely to EMR, which is cool. The assistants/hygenists who have worked on me have all been great. Everyone is efficient, personable, and great at what they do--no extras, no frills, but good service. I'm really happy with Dr. Zhao. He's gentle and skilled. I like that he keeps the chatter short and sweet, gets right to the cleaning and examination (and does a thorough job), and then tells me whether or not I've done a good job taking care of my teeth and gums over the past 6 months. :) He's a nice, friendly dentist who isn't overly talkative or invasive. A general check-up and cleaning usually lasts about 1 hour. I've already recommended Dr. Zhao to several friends, and I will continue to do so! read more

I went to Dr. Zhao for two cleaning visits over the course of one year. While I can't say my experience was bad, it wasn't truly exceptional either. On both occasions, he was incredibly efficient--in fact, I thought he was almost too efficient. In both cases he was in and out of my appointment in 30 minutes or less, doing my cleaning and polishing himself, and an oral exam that didn't seem much beyond perfuntory. (In fact, he was so in-and-out that I never did see his face--he wore a mask the entire time, which was somewhat offputting.) What did bug me was that after my second visit, I couldn't help but think that such a quick treatment couldn't be as thorough and effective as it could be, and it seemed to be the case as I began to notice an increased level of tooth staining after just a few months after my visit, something that I'd never encountered before with other dentists. That's pretty much when I decided to bail on the HMO route and try someone else. His office staff was exceptionally nice and polite, and helpful about any appointment changes (which are very hard to come by with HMO dentists). Again, although my experience with Dr. Zhao was somewhat limited, the results didn't entice me to stay more than a couple visits. read more

Unfortunately, my HMO insurance has a very short list of covered dentists, and all of them have bad reviews. All of them except for Dr. Zhao, that is. When I first moved here I simply picked a dentist from the list and went without consulting with my fellow yelpers (I know! What was I thinking!). After two visits in that many years, I knew that I could never go back to the awful, awful Berdichevsky office. I just had my visit with Dr. Zhao and was more than impressed. I mean, who wants to go to the dentist in the first place, right? He and his staff made the experience about as painless as it could be. He explained everything to me before he did it, and gave me several options for the fillings I needed (including waiting on it). I also really liked the technology that he has in the office. The X-ray thingie that goes in your mouth is connected directly to a laptop, so you can see your X-rays on the laptop as they're being done. Very cool. Overall, it was as good an experience that going to the dentist can be. I will definitely stay with this dentist as long as I stay on this suck-ass insurance. read more

Dr Zhao's dental practice works just great for me. I switched to him from a top dollar guy in Pac Heights who I really liked and had a receptionist I couldn't take my eyes off, but I couldn't afford (either of them). Dr Zhao is very friendly, even though he's not much of a talker, but that's OK. He has a pleasant and likable disposition. He patiently discusses treatment options with me, and he appreciates I don't like spending more money than I need to. Discussing price with him is relaxed and easy. The standard of his work is high from what I can make out after almost a year of seeing him, with four or five treatments including two large fillings and two crowns. I'm paying him less than half the amount I paid in Pac Heights for the crowns. The crown work seems to be just fine. He cleans my teeth himself, which is a huge plus. I pay $65 compared to $110 and the dentist does the work, not a hygienist :) He was able to pick up on some serious cavities that the previous practice had allowed to appear and get very large without adequately warning me or scheduling remedial work (!!!). If you're looking to hand over all your extra money to a dentist, go find a place in Pac Heights with leather armchairs and a stunning receptionist. If you want quality dental work AND an annual vacation, Dr Zhao is your man. read more

If you think you will get a same day appointment for a routine cleaning, think again. They do have appointment times set aside for emergencies or pain. A few years ago, I was being seen at Gentle Hillsdale Dental at Hillsdale Mall in San Mateo. I was told that all my existing fillings need to be refilled. That was just the beginning. $80 bills for "services rendered". Dr. Zhao is the complete opposite. No frills and no BS. Dr. Zhao does his own cleanings and doesn't recommend anything that is not absolutely necessary. Both my husband and I see Dr. Zhao. We have both had terrible experiences where a dentist will begin work before making sure the Novocaine has taken effect. This is the not case with Dr. Zhao. read more

My previous dentist in Burlingame was awesome but I couldn't afford paying her out of pocket after losing my dental insurance. I asked the staff at my orthodontist office for general dentist referral and they referred me to Dr. Edward Zhao. I like the fact he is straight forward and does't waste my time B/S-ing like some other doctors do. Each time I go in, Stella would have me update my medical history, get x-rays done, and then Dr. Zhao would come in to check on my x-rays, probe my gums, scale and clean my teeth. I like the in and out service. My appointment normally lasts 30-45 minutes. Also, pricing is a LOT cheaper than my previous dentist. I love the $$ saving. My only, very minor issue with Dr. Zhao, is that I've never seen his face. I've been going there for the past 3 years but each time I go in, I only meet Dr. Mask Man. He always has his mask on. Anyway, I guess all I need is a good dentist and not a good looking dentist (that would be nice too, btw). read more

Don't be put off by the no frills office or lack of chit chat, Dr. Zhao is good at what he does. I also had some fillings done and he was efficient and it was pain free. I recently had to switch insurance plans and was terrified of looking for a new dentist. As of the date of this review he takes Blue Shield HMO, which it seems like no one else with a star rating above a 2 does. I've been to many dentists, and I feel like Dr. Zhao is the best. The first time i went in, it was because my gums were infected due to a big gaping hole where my wisdom tooth is supposed to grow I had no idea what was happening so I was all panicky, but Dr. Zhao calmed me down. The next time it happend, the swelling was worse. I called Dr. Zhao and he actually opened his office for me on a Saturday and got me through it again. He told me that I should get my wisdom tooth removed or else it might happen again. He also refused to operate on me b/c he said that the xrays shows that the lower wisdom tooth is actually close to a vein. He is just so responsible. Then my other wisdom tooth was growing and I came back to Dr. Zhao. This time, he said he would remove this one, b/c it was not close to a vein. The process was unpainful at all and I could feel Dr. Zhao pull out the tooth in one good yank. It may sound gross, but I was under local anesthetic of course, and I felt the tooth slide right out. I went home and the swelling was so minimal that you could barely tell I just had one of my wisdom tooth removed. Within 2 days I was eating again. That's how impressed I was with Dr. Zhao. As to regular cleaning, I think he does a really thorough job. read more

I'm shocked by the one star review! I've been going to see Dr. Zhao for many years and I probably like him as much as it's possible to like a dentist. He's the most gentle dentist I've ever seen and he is somehow always right on schedule. The longest I've ever had to wait for my appointment is probably 2 minutes. I don't know how he does it. The receptionist, Stella, and the hygienists are also really nice and efficient. Going to the dentist is never fun, but Dr. Zhao's office always makes it as painless and pleasant as possible. One of my teeth was broken in half while I was on a business trip in San Francisco and I walked into Dr. Zhao's office on Sutter street during lunch to see what options do I have since I need to leave town the next day. Well... Let me tell you that I am extremely happy now that I have my problem fixed, and fixed well! I did not have an appointment but Dr. Zhao gave up his lunch time to take a look at my situation, he was concise and articulate in explaining the causes and options, and once I picked the option he and his assistant just did the procedure right on the spot. Dentist Zhao fixed my mom's dentures on the very first visit, no need to come back! I was limited to which dentist I can choose by my mom's dental plan, which was about 85 dentists. After spending hours on which dentist to choose, I made the right choice. During our wait, Zhao's receptionist made several calls to my mom's dental plan to confirm billing while I was there, which was reassuring. She's very nice and pleasant. From a dental standpoint the office is fine. Gets the job done and nothing notably off. From a service standpoint it's been disappointing. Past couple times I've gone I've had to wait over an hour past my appointment to be seen. This is beyond frustrating. And far too frequent to brush off as a fluke. read more

Dr. Zhao is my go-to, no frills, super-efficient "take-care-of-your-teeth-while-not-missing-work" dentist. His office is an easy walk from my office building downtown and I'm able to walk there, get my teeth cleaned and walk back to work in about the time it would take me to meet a friend for lunch. His prices are super reasonable (note: I have dental insurance) and I don't feel like he's trying to upsell me on extra dental procedures or things that I do not need. However, if you prefer to listen to calming music or stare at beautiful artwork while the dentist fiddles with your teeth and gums this may not be the place for you--the office is pretty bare (it's not something I care about, but maybe you do...). One word of caution though--the few times I booked the super-early morning appointment I ended up waiting a while to be seen and didn't save as much time as I thought I would. Don't know what was going on there, but it ends up working out better to book a slightly later appointment. read more

Nothing special, but definitely dependable. Have been seeing Doctor Zhao a couple of months and had 3 office visits. All 3 times to do fillings. Very nice receptionist who will take the time to explain fee and procedures to you carefully, making sure you know what you are paying for. When I first met doctor Zhao, I explained to him that I had a previous filling done and the other dentist exposed my root (giving me a possibility of a root canal) because I had a deep cavity. And hence asked if Dr. Zhao could be careful to let me know when he is close to any roots. He was very careful and filled all my other fillings without any problems. Dr. Zhao is efficient and get things done effectively. He also answers questions promptly and explains them in details. He is very gentle and careful, highly recommended if you are doing filling!!!! read more

We unfortunately have Aetna DMO which forces us to pick a primary care dentist. I selected Dr. Zhao based on more positive reviews than others on the very limited primary care provider list. When I called his office, I was told I couldn't be seen until my name appeared on their primary care roster in a MONTH! This information could be easily verified with the insurance company, but she refused to schedule an appointment even if it was an emergency. I was told that if I made an appointment, then I would have to pay out of pocket. I filed an official complaint with the Aetna and the state of CA. read more

Dr. Zhao has been my dentist for over 10 years and I've had nothing but good experiences with him. In addition to my twice yearly cleanings, he's also put on a dental implant crown for me, pulled out my wisdom tooth, and changed my old metal fillings to composite fillings over the years. There's a reason why it's hard to get an appointment with him- he's usually booked solid months in advance. Dr. Zhao will explain to you beforehand what he needs to do and also what he recommends and gives you the option of accepting the procedures. Then he gets down to business quickly and efficiently. In fact, I think he's the most efficient general dentist I have ever gone to in my life. Like other reviewers have mentioned before, there's no BS with this guy. read more

Unfortunately Edward Zhao's office was the closest Dental office to my work and within my provider. First, the earliest apt I could get with them was about 5 months out. That was a little annoying, but I was willing to wait just because of the convenience of their office. Second, I had to call to confirm my appointment (something usually the dental office does but failed to do). Appointment day came, and I was all excited to get my chompers cleaned; got to the office at 11:55am (my apt was at noon) filled out the paper work and was ready to go. The receptionist told me at first they would be right with me. I waited for about 20 minutes before I said something, and then politely asked how much longer I would have to wait since I was on my lunch break. She apologized and said 10 more minutes. By the time 12:30 rolled around I figured I would wait another 5 minutes before I said something again. When I asked when I would be seen, and pointed out that I had been waiting 35 minutes and was on my lunch break again, she told me just a few more minutes. You can imagine I was understandably peeved when 12:40 came and went and I still had not been called back. All the receptionist had to say was that they were busy... I was so furious at that point; and I expressed my dissatisfaction with the way they run their business and that they were unprofessional and if they were busy they should have had some consideration for my time and called to reschedule the apt. Unbelievable! Anyway, I would search for another dentist before considering a place like this. Also, their dental offices were pretty run down and unclean looking. The walls were dirty, their waiting room chairs had holes in the upholstery, and the reception desk was a complete disaster. Not what you want in a dental office that's for sure. read more

I called to make an appointment because my tooth had broken. I was told that I couldn't be seen until mid-May, about 6 weeks away. However, when my insurance called they said that they could have seen me sooner. First, of all, how could they have remembered me when they only spoke with me for 10 seconds. Second, I found out that CA state law mandates that appointments be made within 4 weeks. Third, don't trust these people, with your teeth if they cannot be truthful about even making appointments in a timely and legal manner. read more

Like what some people commented, I made a call on 10/5/2016 to see if I can make an appointment this week, and there was a lady said they are not available until 2017. read more
