We are fairly regular customers at Egg Crate. Don't think we will be back. I ordered breakfast steak med rare. Last time we were there, I did as well. Both times it came out well done. They fixed it last time. This time the owner came out informed us that they are no longer going to be cooked to order, a set down a raw steak that he had seasoned and presented as med rare. It was cold to the touch, and bleeding. He was rude, unprofessional, but simply petty about it. read more

Is it fair to rate a restaurant poorly because they served me canned mushrooms? Is it fair for me a customer to go to a restaurant and expect a method of preparation of slightly more technical difficulty than opening a can? Especially because so many aluminum cans have that pull tab on the top of them nowadays. You don't even need to find a can opener. I was charged fifty cents for these rubbery little discs of tastelessness, which is probably about what the whole can costs at the supermarket. I can't be sure, though, because I've had more self respect than to eat that quasi-fungi since the first time I ate an actual mushroom. They came in a skillet, which seemed to be the most challenging dish on a simple breakfast menu largely comprised of eggs, pancakes, and waffles. Some onions, peppers, jalapenos and mushrooms sauteed with country fried potatoes and topped with two eggs over easy. The vegetables weren't cooked very well, nor the overly large slices of potato, but the eggs were indeed the over easy I requested, so kudos there. A half order of biscuits and gravy revealed a milk-sweet gelatinous goop covering a biscuit that was undercooked in the middle. People were nice, and there seemed to be a good number of customers in a restaurant that's managed to make it work since 2008, but I suspect The Egg Crate's primary source of success is due to the lack of other breakfast establishments in the rest of the city. read more

We just came back from breakfast there. It was underwhelming. The space is nice but food is average. So is the coffee tbh (not sure why other reviewers praise it). The service - same. The waitress seemed frazzled and it's ok, everyone can have a worse day, but if you spill a drink serving it, come back and wipe off the spill. As far as food: Hashbrowns were undercooked. My omelet was just ok. It's disappointing when you go out to eat just to find out you can make the same dish way better than what you're paying for. Bacon was good though. I have to finally learn to check Yelp first before googling places to eat. How does this place have 4.3 stars on Google I'm honestly not sure. I'm posting this review there as well. read more

A great hidden breakfast stop in a crowded shopping mall area. We arrived on a Sunday around 11 am to find a extremely packed parking lot. So far that is a good sign that people love it here. Inside there's a bit of a seating area if you have to wait and a hostess station. Luckily there wasn't much of a wait time for us. Walking in is sort of a maze, the dining area is small and has partitioned areas with wide long paintings that are bright and vibrant flowers. While the paintings were beautiful, I can't say much about the rest of the place. The walls are dirty, and the ceiling tiles are a sagging ugly brown. This place could use a fresh coat of white paint on the walls and to replace all the ceiling tiles. The menu itself covers breakfast all day on the first 2 pages, and the rest were lunch related items. I ordered the plate with hash browns, 2 scrambled eggs, sausage links, bacon, and a biscuit. For the large amounts of food I got, this was cheap for 6.95. It was all freshly prepared and the hash browns were buttery and delicious. Biscuit was large and crispy on the outside, soft and flaky on the inside. Everything else was great and fresh. My only quip was the orange juice I ordered. It didn't taste freshly squeezed and was most likely the cheap concentrate crap and also it wasn't even cold. I ended up putting some ice cubes from my water into it. I paid about 1.50 for it and was extremely displeased with it. If I'm paying that much for a drink, it better be fresh or a good quality orange juice. Skip the OJ and stick with water or coffee. Service was good and not too intrusive. I will definitely come back to this place next time I'm on the west side and have a hankering for some fresh breakfast. If you think something on the menu won't be enough to fill you up, you will be surprised to see that all their portions are huge. So again.. listen to the yelp.. we found this when looking for a good breakfast place in Wichita.. its in a strip mall of insurance agencies about 15 minutes from downtown.. but totally worth the drive. The service was great. we were greeted by what seemed like a owner who got us our coffee and waters. The place was clean and not cluttered and you could tell there were a lot of regulars. I ordered one of their menu omelettes with sausage and jalepenos. I asked for extra crispy hash browns they listened!!! They were very crispy. I was so happy. The other meal was a custom omelette with crispy potatoes. Both omeletes were fluffy and not overcooked. They were not greasy. I had an english muffin that was served warm and was more than a regular grocery story english muffin. The next time we go to wichita we will go here again. It was really big, with lots of seating, we went to another a popular breakfast place the day before, and had to wait.. this place looked much more able to handle people. read more

The food was good most of the time, although you have a better chance of getting a toddler dressed in under 5 minutes than you do of getting a refill on any kind of beverage most days. The main kicker is the owner's attitude: his mood will swing on you in an instant. The portions are decent. And the food is just okay. The staff are not very attentive to the needs of the customers. I shouldbt have to hunt down a waitress for a drink refill. I believe I heard them call him Jay, but he was the host both times I've been there. Super professional and accommodating. Waitresses were nice and efficient with food and drink services. As for me if I'm looking for a place to have breakfast this one is number one in my book in Wichita. Simple and traditional breakfast food. Also options that you won't find it places like Denny's, or other chains of that time. If you're looking to be in and out in five minutes this is not the place to go. The coffee may not be the best on the planet, but it's coffee and a breakfast joint. The biscuits and gravy are outstanding. I've never had a bad breakfast here. read more

Plain farmhouse decor (if I had to categorize it) Good to Great Service Standard Food There is nothing to special about this place. You will get service and decent food. Pick this place over The Beacon, Denny's or IHOP, Village Inn might be debatable only because they have much more to offer on their menues. This could be a combination of or categorized with Jimmy's Egg and Jimmies Diner. They are very similar. A little on the greasy side, no presentation value, but is priced accordingly. They love to heavily butter their bread here and I secretly enjoy it. No particular menu item really sticks out for me or my friends here. Its just greasy style home cooking. Not as greasy as The Beacon though. They are usually busy on weekends and it seems that old folks like to frequent this place. read more

The old man and I decided to give this place a try, as we are rapidly running out of patients with other greasy spoons around here. I wasn't impressed. I ordered eggs over easy home fries and sausage with English muffins. The breads to thick, dry and the fried tatters were hammered and the onions that were suppose to add flavor looked like fried onion skin. the thing I disliked the most was the elbow to asshole of it all. I love going here. They are right down the street from where i live so i will often start off a day of errands and shopping with lunch here. i am always by myself and they are good about helping me quickly. I hate standing awkwardly alone when waiting to be seated or waiting to give order at the table. The open face sandwich tasted pretty good but the meat was a little tough. It couldnt be cut with the butter knife i had. Coul have asked for asteak knife i guess but ehh. Another time I had the CB and ffs and it was delicious. Last time I went I got the club sandwich. WOW! It was impressive. It had layers of ham, turkey, and cheese with a top slice of bread, MIDDLE slice of bread and bottom slice. It was cut in fourths triangles with a pick stuck through. It was huge! I didnt know where to start! I struggled to figure out how to eat it and finally just layered what I wanted one ata time insteadof trying to stuff the whole thing in my mouth. I was literally self-concious trying to eat this wonderful sandwich gracefully, I was seated in the middle of the room and I felt all eyes were on me, yikes. Sure enough, as a couple were leaving the gentleman says "that thing is as big as you!" I had to laugh and agree. But it was yummy. They also have a punch card that afer the fifth (I think) punch you get 5 dollars off. so thats an incentive to keep coming back. I plan to, its just too good not to. read more

My son and I had a great breakfast here this morning. It's nice to be greeted as you walk in the door. First of all, this is about the only breakfast establishment on the west side that serves corned beef not from a can...thank you for that! They were very accommodating to making sure the corned beef was crispy and our bacon was crispy. Our servers did a great job and my coffee cup was always full, a big plus.
